Falcons Fly to Victory Over Rams

The SMCC Falcons continued their run towards a Huron League title, defeating the Flat Rock Rams 37-14 on Military Appreciation Night at Navarre Field. The undefeated Falcons showcased a well-rounded performance, with their offense, defense, and special teams all contributing to the win.

Quarterback Ian Foster set the tone early, capping a 7-play opening drive with a 30-yard touchdown run. The Falcons’ defense stifled the Rams’ offense, forcing a fumble on Flat Rock’s first drive and holding them scoreless until the waning seconds of the first half.

At halftime, SMCC led 20-6. The Falcons’ defense remained opportunistic in the second half, with interceptions from Andrew Beggs, Griffin Worden, and Lukas Linzell. Linzell’s pick-six, a 51-yard return, sealed the victory.

Drew Harris and Cole Reinhardt added rushing touchdowns, while Foster connected with Harris for a 12-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter. Harris also converted a 35-yard field goal attempt and excelled on kickoff coverage.

The Falcons’ defense, allowing just 7.28 points per game this season, was led by Foster, Linzell, Jack Starner, Eddie Keshen, and Brock Cousino. Flat Rock’s Ben Scully scored both of the Rams’ touchdowns.

SMCC’s coaching staff praised the team’s scout players for their role in preparing for the Rams. The Falcons will face their rival, the Jefferson Bears, next Friday night at Navarre Field.

Flat Rock was led by Graham Junge’s 172 passing yards and Ben Scully’s 65 rushing yards. Jacon Hagan led the defense with 10 tackles. The Rams will play at New Boston Huron in week 8.

  1. Flat Rock had a game plan use their size and try to pound the ball on the ground. Unfortunately for them they miscalculated the speed and physicality of the CC defense. CC can pressure QB only rushing 4 and the elite speed of the linebackers allows the secondary to play pass first no matter the down and distance. There were many times in the game when it felt like passing was the best option but they continued to try and run to run the ball. When they did finally try to throw in obvious passing situations no one was open and with the d line bearing down he was just throwing it up for grabs.

      1. I ain’t saying we good but you have to remember it’s a rivalry game… anything can happen and it’s the little advantages that mean a lot in these type of games

        1. Anything cannot happen when the talent gap is that wide. The nicer the CC coaching staff is feeling the closer it will be.

        2. This really shouldn’t be called a rivalry game anymore, I mean it was when I was growing up when Jefferson would win games and play more than 9 games a season but it’s not the 80s and 90s anymore. Let’s be honest with ourselves here this is the best CC team since 2019 and they aren’t gonna let Jefferson (#2) ruin their chance of winning the league.

  2. Coach Kipf and his staff continue to keep this team laser focused. High energy and hard hitting… New offense averaging 30+ a game while the defense is only giving up 6 per game, this team can go far.

    1. SMCC has historically never been able to pass. Windham was pretty good but that was 10 years ago. SMCC has had more success this year in their new offense but no offense, when 10 guys are in the box and your receiver is open down field , I would hope you catch it and score! I’m just not sold on SMCC yet as a state power. I know I’m going to get hate for this but the Flat Rock QB played one of his worst games ever. If those turnovers don’t happen, then what? FR stopped SMCC twice. SMCC must have been worried about blitzes because they never split out anyone and max protected.

Trust me, I want SMCC to go all the way, I just question how real they are.

      Good luck Falcons,
Good luck Riverview, Flat Rock, and hopefully Airport too!

      1. Being real doesn’t mean you will go all the way. Using your terms.

Not sure what else SMCC has to do. Just win. That’s the goal. 7-0 is real. So far, so good.

      2. After each win people all like to give the “what if” phrase. Over and over “what if”. You mentioned poor play at QB for FR. Well as everyone says “what if” the CC defense had something to do with that. “What if” FR put 10 in the box because they could not stop the run. What if CC is a D7 state power.
One week one game at a time. “What if” will be answered soon.

      3. Same script, different week.

SMCC handily beats a team that is supposedly too big, too physical, too fast, too talented etc and then delusional dads post that the team’s all-world player (insert name here) “had a bad game” or “if it weren’t for the three fumbles or the three interceptions the outcome would’ve been different.”

This reasoning sounds as silly as saying, “if our team would’ve scored more than SMCC we would’ve won.”

Maybe the Falcons defense has something to do with forcing multiple turn-overs and consistently causing the “best” players to have “bad games”?

        1. “If” Probably the biggest 2 letter words in the English language. You are a guru. One of my favorite posts of the year. If you would have scored more points you definitely would have won that is correct.

    2. They didn’t throw the ball because they didn’t need to. And in terms of success, Foster threw 2 passes the whole game. One went for a touchdown, and the other was a deep shot thrown nicely that just went off of Harris’s fingertips. If they would have passed more you would’ve seen more success. But then again, they were up 20-0 in the second quarter so what’s the need to force the ball down field when they are running the ball with ease and taking time off the clock?

  3. Congratulations to smcc players and entire coaching staff for a all around performance this year. Well deserved Huron league champs! Is that to early?

  4. FR had 4 or 5 turnovers, could have had a couple more.
That will not get it done playing a team as well coached as SMCC.
FR needs to learn how to defend the T formation.
Giving up 89 points in 2 games against the T.
    Not good.

      1. Approximately 50 yards came at end of game when it was all but over. CC played all their players while FR kept starters in on most positions including QB

        1. That’s sort of what I was getting at.
Maybe padding the stats, not sure.
QB was picked 3 times and fumbled once.
If that is true, FR has 45 kids, should be playing their bench like SMCC.
          Just my thoughts.

      2. So basically 120 yds on almost 30 passes of meaningful play. Meaningful play meaning not going against backups down 3 touchdowns with minutes left to play.
Probably not very wise still having him in there With a defense that’s eating him alive. Especially with playoff hopes just around the corner. But guess that’s how the rock rolls.

        1. In fairness, one never really knows whose backups are in and whose aren’t. That just a talking point that people love to use. All players in the game are varsity players, period. Also, FR has made a handful of comebacks over the years when down big. They might not win the game, but they have made comebacks from out of no where. They were down 3 TD’s to Riverview this year and 4 TD’s down last year and were able to make those games to where Riverview had to hang on and score late to win.

I’m not sure why the hate is coming from you. It sounds like your team won. Why not be happy? Why question stats or be bitter toward the other team, players and their coaching strategy? What’s better than being at a high school football game on a Friday night? Well maybe being at a High School football game on a Friday night and winning! LOL, but seriously why are you throwing shade?

          1. in all fairness flatrock was down 22 to 7 before ian adams injury. If adams is not injured flatrock might not hit 20

          2. Agree, valid points. And maybe did come across as a bit of a hater but definitely not. Was strictly speaking to all the haters and what iffers that i sit back and listen to every day. One teams gonna win the other has to lose. Be happy when you win and sad when you lose and leave it at that. Refs, injuries, slick footballs, bad performances all part of the game.
But then again isn’t that what makes this site successful and fun. 😉

        2. SMCC had more return yardage on the 3 picks than FR had passing, the entire game.
Chris, when you’re getting your butt kicked and the other team has their 2s in the game.
you stop passing the ball, period.
Doesn’t look good, except padding someone’s stats.
          Everyone knows this.

          1. Its up to the losing team to wave the white flag. What the winning team does, should not impact what the losing team does.

FR keeping their starters in, was not bad form, in my opinion.

SMCC’s 2’s went against FR 1’s and did fine. I think that’s good if you are a SMCC fan.
