Week 2 Game Day Bites

By Chris Schultz

This is our 2nd installment of Game Day Bites. This is a new feature in which one of the guys tries local fare on his way to or during the game.

On Friday Night in Monroe, Gary and I were treated to multiple entrees from Primal Plates located at 15 Washington Street in Monroe. Primal Plates has prepped and ready-to-go meals featuring seasonal, locally harvested ingredients.

Our meals included Honey Garlic Chicken, Apple Cider Chicken and the brand new Steak Bites. We were also treated to Butternut Squash Soup and an assortment of cookies and treats.

Let me start by saying that the presentation for all of the dinners was wonderful and they were packaged for easy transport.

Honey Garlic Chicken

The Honey Garlic Chicken was a grilled boneless chicken breast served with roasted sweet potatoes and broccoli. Let me start by saying that the sweet potatoes and broccoli were outstanding. There was plenty of each and I would definitely come back for more. The grilled chicken was cooked perfectly. The meal itself was certainly an American-sized portion.

Apple Cider Chicken

The Apple Cider Chicken is herb-roasted chicken thighs served over a bed of rice with crunchy green beans topped with sweet and savory apples in a slow-cooked, mulled cider sauce. This meal was super legit. I have never had a chicken thigh served like this. The green beans were crunchy and the rice was filling. Once again, a hearty American-sized portion.

Primal Steak Bites

The Primal Steak Bites are new and currently are not on the menu. The meal included the steak along with sautéed mushrooms, sweet onions and parmesan-roasted redskins. This main dish was my favorite; once again, there was a generous portion of food.

Butternut Squash Soup

This was my absolute favorite part of the meal that I sampled. While I thoroughly enjoyed everything, this soup rocked! Here is the strange thing, I don’t eat squash! Like ever! I can’t stand it. But I figured it came with the meals, I better give it a try. It was thick, rich, and delightful.

Assorted Cookies and Treats

In the end, I was treated to an assortment of cookies and treats. I am known to be a sugar junkie so I thoroughly enjoyed everything.

I have to say that I was presently surprised when I sampled all of the meals. I literally had no expectations and I came away a big fan of Primal Plates. If you’re looking for something on game day or you are not interested in preparing a home cook meal, but would like one anyway. I would suggest stopping by.

All of the meals are gluten-free, pre-packaged in generous individual portions and made to either enjoy cold or microwaved for ultimate convenience. Primal Plates is open 10:00 am until 5:00 pm Tuesday through Friday. A big thank you to the owner, Ellen Genaw.
