Grosse Ile started the 2022 season fast, going 4-1 before limping to the finish while ending the season with a 5-5 record. John Bodner returns for his 17th season and will look to string together back-to-back playoff appearances for the first time in over a decade.
Head Coach: John Bodner
Offensively, the Red Devils were hit hard by graduation at the skill positions, although they return a veteran offensive line. Zac Berwald, Carson Pace, Austin Wisler, and Dylan Alexander are all seniors with varsity experience. Tanner Symons and Mason Crowley are in a battle for the starting QB position. Crowley is a returner at WR and should give Coach Bodner some flexibility at receiver to go along with senior Jonathan Allison. Matthew Pizzo will be the featured RB for the Islanders.
Defensively, all of the aforementioned players are expected to contribute along with juniors Evan Brown and Joseph Christnagel. Both will play LB while sophomore Dominic Cucinella is expected to contribute at DB. Senior Aiden Rush is expected to have a big season at LB for the Red Devils.
Coaches Outlook: We have lost a lot of our skill players from last year and we will need to find some depth as we have several guys playing both ways. Our schedule is competitive from Week 1 to Week 9 with 6 teams having made the playoffs last year. Our goal is to get better each week and put ourselves in a position to win.
FNV Outlook: While Grosse Ile lost a lot to graduation, the Red Devils always have talent. Matthew Pizzo and Aiden Rush are excellent players and 3-year starters. Throw in a veteran coach and solid coaching staff and Grosse Ile will be competitive week in and week out. Week 1 against Ida will be an extremely tough game, but the Red Devils do get the Blue Streaks at home.
Grosse Ile should dominate Ida. Blue streaks in for a long year.
