  1. Just my thoughts, no 3-6 or 4-5 team should ever make the playoffs, because they will draw a 9-0 powerhouse and get destroyed. Mediocre is the new word on campus, if we are a small school we can play bigger schools and get more points for losing to them than beating a school your size. Soon it will be that we don’t keep score and everyone gets a participation ribbon. Replace the last game of the season and start the playoffs early. Then we don’t have to hear or see math problems on a football blog playing out all of the possibilities. Abolish the rankings as your record should speak for how good your program is. My belief is only league champions should make the playoffs. You want in the playoffs win your league. Like I said my thoughts.

    1. Your thoughts are incorrect.

You are completely wrong in that you do NOT get more points for losing to a bigger school, vice beating one of your own size… or smaller for that matter.
If you lose to a D1 school who is 7-1 you would receive 4.667 POP
If you defeat a 7-1 D8 school you would receive 5.111 POP.
Anything in between those examples, would be in favor of defeating the smaller school.

Everyone in because you dont like math… errr ok.

Only league champs make the playoffs? How awful that would be. Im going to give you a timeout so you can think about this one.

      1. I never said that I don’t like math, I just find it hard to believe that a team, say Detroit Loyola at 3-4 is ranked as high as 10th in D7 depending on what site you visit. Is it strength of schedule? There are probably at 22 teams in D7 that have double that win total and have played 8 games. I know that it is a system that is supposed to be fair but no matter what playoff system has been in place it always seems to allow for these type of situations. I’m all in favor of rewarding a team for winning a game by why do they feel the need to reward points for a loss. 4.66 for a loss vs 5.11 for a win not much of a difference. 20.44 for 4 wins vs 18.64 for 4 losses that’s lees than 2 points. Teams just can’t up and move or ride 2 hours to play similar schools and I am sure that Detroit Loyola is in that situation. In your opinion what would be a better option for a playoff system?

        1. I’d honestly like to see this one be given a shot.
3 year run. See what happens.

In the case of Loyola, they are by far one of the best 32 teams in D7. Its not even close.
Their schedule is ridiculous for a D7 team. The Huron League Champ would most likely be 4-4 with that schedule.
NDP, OLSM, UDJ, DCD. Chicago Christ the King. Thats rough for anyone.

You reward points for a loss so that teams arent looking to line up 0-9 cupcakes.
Play the great program who usually goes 8-1. You will be rewarded for it.
And Im fine with that.. it quite honestly has to be that way.

          1. Thanks for the explanation, I was just a little frustrated about the new playoff system entertaining 3-6 teams. I remember an undefeated CC team in 1980 and an undefeated Jefferson team 1983 that both missed the playoffs. Must have had stricter guidelines back then to make the playoffs.

          2. It was simply a numbers thing.

256 teams make the playoffs now.

Back then 32(total) teams made the playoffs. Thats 8 teams in 4 Classes.
So if you didnt play in a tough league and go 9-0, you didnt make the playoffs.

There is a lot to look at here.

Carlson got the big win last night. That got them a lot of points.

Can Trenton beat Wyandotte to stay in the playoffs? If not, Rouge might slide in the district. Probably don’t want that. Melvindale could also be the team to replace Trenton, if they lose and drop out.

    Will View beat Monroe?
Will Carlson beat Woodhaven? Even if Carlson loses, they will receive 5.333 bonus points.

Who is the favorite when Monroe and Riverview meet?

The main question is, if View wins and Carlson loses, does View jump Carlson and get the home game? This Could be the only way View gets a home playoff game.

I will do a quick and dirty playoff point total right here.

If View beats Monroe. They will receive 60 points for the win and 24 bonus points for Monroe’s 4 wins on the season. That will give View 395 total playoff points. 395/9 is 43.889. View would also receive 24/9 bonus points for Monroe’s wins. That equals 2.667. Add those bonus points to the already accumulated bonus points and you have 18.292 bonus points. 43.889 + 18.292 = 62.281

    If Carlson loses to Woodhaven.
    385/9 = 42.778
    Bonus points. 21.333
    42.778 + 21.333 = 64.111

    Carlson 64.111
    Riverview 62.281

Now. I didn’t take into account the bonus points either team will receive from how their previous opponents fair in week 9.

The DRL all play each other. So half will win and half will lose. If. And this is a big IF. all the HL teams win, maybe just maybe View can jump Carlson. But I don’t believe this will happen. Even if every HL team wins.

Now you have to look at AP. They will surely defeat a 1 win SGA in week 9. I don’t think the extra bonus points View will receive for beating Monroe will allow them to jump AP.

If I were a betting man, I say the district ends up:

    1. Allen Park
    2. Carlson
    3. Riverview
    4. Trenton

If Carlson were to pull off the win this Friday: Woodhaven is the favorite but Carlson is playing very well.

    1. Carlson
    2. Allen Park
    3. Riverview
    4. Trenton

Look for Snooze’s week 8.5(favorites win) playoff map this week. Maybe Tuesday. I think he will have Riverview winning. Carlson losing. Trenton winning.

      1. I have no hate for the View, I think they run a great program.
Just think they could better themselves in the DRL, for more possible playoff points, good upper half competition, easy increased points from the lower hanging fruit and much less travel time to and from games.
I have no Ill feelings at all.
I like all area teams, and hope they do well in post season play.

    1. Really nice breakdown Gary. If Carlson beats Woodhaven i wouldn’t have a problem with them staying above Riverview considering they would have just beaten a quality D1 Woodhaven team. My question is how would a 2 loss Allen Park team be seeded above a 9-0 Riverview team assuming they beat Monroe? Allen Park’s best win is a down Wyandotte team.

        1. So Gary if that is in fact the district, who do you see winning it? I think Riverview finally gets over the hump and beats Allen Park.

          1. I would probably agree with you. Lets see how Carlson does against Woodhaven.
I wouldnt count out the Marauders.

  3. Rumor has it that schools in the league are upset at the new playoff system. You get 50 points for beating Riverview, 45 for beating Huron, Milan and Airport, 40 for beating FR and GI and only 30 for a win over SMCC. You do get bonus points based on each schools wins, but if you look at the #’s closely, you get significantly less across the board for a win over the Falcons. This is actually hurting Riverview this year and why they sit below 1 loss Carlson and Allen Park in the playoff point system. As of now, they would most likely play an away game in the first round and most likely the 2nd round. That doesn’t seem right considering the Pirates are one of two unbeaten teams in D3. Look for a vote soon, to push the Falcons out of the league for football because they hurt every team in the league because of their D7 staure.

    1. Chris or Gary correct me if i’m wrong but i heard if Riverview beats Monroe they will pass Allen Park and Carlson for the top seed.

        1. The rest of the league would be hurt with a D 7 team
Like Mother Nature. Let the big dog eat and the runt gets left behind

          1. You have a real obsession with SMCC. Did you not make it there? Did you get beat by them at some point? Are you an angry (Name your school) Step Dad too?

          2. LOL. This is in reply to Anonymous 9:57.
First off, the truth hurts, its a fact that the league is a big advantage to SMCC. They get more points and they play up. Playing up is the key. It raises the bar.
If they played D7 teams all the time they would not be the program they are today. We are to thank for that and we all have let it happen for years.
Plus, I went to public school, saved $40k , used it for college, and I am currently an Engineer. I actually have social skills, work with the most diverse people and work for a large company, not my family business.
Earned it all. Life is good.

          3. I am the Real Reality- already stated I went to JLC- you are a poor imposter .

For anonymous 9:57 beat MCC in 1982- at “historic” Navarre

    2. The concept of the new playoff system is to reward teams who play a tough or bigger school schedule. This stops the loading up your schedule with lesser teams or patsys, to get the magical 6 win number.
It doesn’t reward a school who plays mostly smaller schools, like Riverview does. Maybe 6 or 7 of their games or wins were against smaller schools.
That’s why it would be better for them to play schools their own size.
I think that is how it goes now.

      1. Bigger does not equal tougher. The bottom half of the Downriver league is pretty weak on the field. Riverview would have a harder time beating d8 Whiteford. MHSAA needs to eliminate the size of school points and stick with win/loss records only.

        1. You missed the point.
Riverview would get more points for playing and beating schools their size, like Trenton, South Gate, Taylor, Carlson, AP, rather than beating division 4, 5 and 7 schools like Airport, Flat Rock, Milan, Jefferson, Grosse Ile, SMCC.
Only one other school (Huron) is their size.
The bottom half of the HL is pretty weak also, plus you get less points for beating them.
Plus, Riverview is directly in the middle of downriver, hence, much less travel to downriver league teams.

          1. You miss the point. The Huron League prepares Riverview for the playoffs better than Taylor, Lincoln Park, Edsel Ford, Southgate. Playing a bunch of DRL cupcakes will absolutely not prepare them better. Staying in the Huron and scheduling quality non-league opponents is the best option.

        2. Totally disagree.
That is exactly what they are trying to get away from.
I know that would work for Riverview, I mean you may go 9-0 this year and I hope you do,
However, I doubt you do anything in the playoffs when you face any decent D3 school.

          1. I’m sure AP, Woodhaven, Wyandotte, Carlson, Trenton would do fine preparing you for your playoffs.
Would get you more points too, which is the whole point of conversation, or so I thought.
Beating up lower half of HL does nothing except pad your wins.
            Good luck in d3

          2. Just a Mom’s point of view

I really hope moving forward we let go of league play, play within your division & schedule your non divisional play with an upper division. Honestly that’s the only way I see the new playoff point system treating schools equally regardless of your “size”

          3. Going 7-0 in the DRL would give Riverview more playoff points than going 7-0 in the HL.
            You are a D3 team playing 3 D4, 2D5 and 1 D7 schools.
            That’s all I’m saying.
I personally don’t care if you play al D 8 schools.
            Good luck in playoffs !

          4. Mom
How could each school play up ?
If a D8. Wants to play up , why would anyone above them take the game , as they would all want to play up as well

          5. Just a Mom’s point of view

            Reality
Then the smaller schools play within their division. That’s who you’ll see in the playoffs. Since playoffs are strictly divisional play then the season leading to playoffs should be as well. 9 games, 7 within your division 2 are your choice. I definitely agree that a lower division does not necessarily mean weaker by no means but unfortunately because of your school size you hurt the higher divisions. If this new point system is the new way of playoffs, things should change. I’m not knocking the D6, D7 or D8 but things should be realigned so it’s more “equal” if that’s even a thing?! I don’t feel the DRL is better competition than the Huron league but simply because of size it’s a disadvantage for the higher division schools yet an advantage for the lower division schools. Obviously this is the first year so who knows things may be adjusted in years to come

          6. Riverview has just as good as a chance as AP, Carlson or Trenton to get past Rouge. Don’t matter what league they play in. They all pay the piper in the end.

    1. No, unfortunately he’s out for the remainder of the football season. There’s a chance he will be back for basketball after Christmas. Rehab is the main focus now.

  4. Unbiased Football Fan

The rain and mud definitely played to Jefferson’s advantage. CC is all about speed on offense and defense and on a muddy, wet field, team speed is neutralized.

Cc had a couple nice drives that stalled out on 4th down stops. Credit to Jefferson’s defensive coaches. They called some beautiful blitzs and stunts on 4th down to stop cc

    1. I would think rain and mud would benefit a t offense much more than a spread offense.
Quit trying to deflect the fact SMCC almost lost to a 2-6 cellar dweller team.
That SMCC “we are better than you” attitude is why I always root against them.

      1. You are crazy to think that the weather had no impact on the outcome of this came.. I give Jefferson credit for keeping this came competitive for the first time in years.. this rivalry has turned into the Ohio st Michigan rivalry with Smcc dominating Jefferson with a 10-2 record over the last decade… so go ahead and keep hating.. let us Prey..

        1. No hate here. Just head to the Catholic league like you should and everyone will be happy.
You dominate because your a private school.

          1. That makes no sense. Maybe before school of choice came in to play. Would you rather go anywhere you want to play for free or pay over 11k and go to CC? That’s reality.

  5. Early 2nd quarter Airport had 3rd and goal at the 2 and got stopped twice, that would’ve made it 7-7. Milan then went 99 yards in about 7 or 8 plays for a 14 point swing. It was all Milan from that point on. Hopefully the young fellas from Airport learn from this and finish strong next week and comeback ready to hang with the Huron League big boys next year.

  6. Credit to Coach Gennoe and the Jefferson staff and players, they straight up out-played and out-coached SMCC tonight, they just ran out of time. This was a classic trap game paired with it being a crosstown rivalry and the Falcons were shell shocked. I am not knocking the SMCC coaches or players because Jefferson games should be battles like that but this one was too close for a team that could make a run in D7.

    1. A lot of egos on the SMCC squad.
Inside scoop says it’s a problem with this group.
They have talent , but think they are all that.
Hope to see them play a good team early in the playoffs.

    1. I heard if they beat Monroe they will be the top seed in their region. But a loss and they could be the 3 seed in their district.

    2. There is a lot to look at here.

        1. Couple surprises last night by scores.
Flat Rock/Huron, what’s up with the Chiefs?
SMCC/Jefferson, should not be looking ahead, you’re not that good.
Milan/Airport, Actually thought the Jets might give them a game.
Carlson/Lakeland, was wrong on this one, I’ll call the Maurauders legit now.

          1. Williams out with a medical emergency, Isaac Smith out 90% of the game with a nagging injury. A snap over QBs head resulted in a turnover near midfield that lead to Rams’ only score.

        1. For some reason John forgot to mention Gabe Anthony. He is also out with a hand injury that occurred prior to the start of the season.

          1. I didn’t forget, I only listed kids who had contributed to the team so far this year (and last, for that matter). Still waiting on your boy to play- will he be back at all?

          2. Actually, John, he did contibute last year. The coach put him in a different capacity last year. Why? You would have to ask the coach. Not looking good as far as this year.

          3. Did he play JV last year? They were very talented last year, maybe there just wasn’t room for on varsity him at the position he played? I can’t imagine them repurposing a player that could’ve helped the team, I know they want to win.

          4. No, he was on Varsity. Exceptional Receiver. Right up there with the best of them. Like I said, you would have to ask the coach.

          5. Bleacher Creature

The only time I remember hearing Gabe’s name was from someone in the Bleachers saying “THROW IT TO GABE”.
