Time to make the drive up M-85 (Fort Street) for our next team in the Schedule Analysis Series. Riverview is coming off of back-to-back playoff appearances, but after last season ended with a heartbreaking loss in the first round of the playoffs, can the Pirates get back to the top of the Huron League? The schedule says…
Aug 29 Romulus
Sept 6 @ Huron
Sept 13 Flat Rock
Sept 20 @ SMCC
Sept 27 Milan
Oct 4 @ Airport
Oct 11 @ Jefferson
Oct 18 Grosse Ile
Oct 25 @ Redford Thurston
Gut-Check Game: at SMCC. We mentioned many a time that this would be the game of the week in Week 3 last season, and possibly the game of the year in the Huron League. The Falcons then swooped in (pun intended) and dealt a blow to the Pirates title hopes with a 20-6 victory. While both teams ended up watching Grosse Ile take the crown last season, this time around at Navarre Field is still important for the Pirates if they want to get back on top of the Huron League. Special mention to Grosse Ile in Week 8, as that game will be for the Colvin Cup, and possibly the outright Huron League Championship.
Trap Game: at Airport. Besides going to Carleton, this game falls after the Pirates play at SMCC and host Milan in consecutive weeks. Derek McLaughlin will need to keep his team focused after a tough two-week stretch.
Snoozer: How fast things change in a year. Romulus was thought to be a challenge in Week 1 last season. The Eagles proceeded to get thrashed 42-12 by the Pirates, and go 3-6 with wins over Redford Union, Dearborn Heights Annapolis, and Livonia Clarenceville.
Non-Con Challenge: Redford Thurston replaces Redford Union on the schedule. The Eagles went 5-4 last season, but have recent playoff appearances.
Notable: This will mark the fourth straight year Riverview and Romulus will open the season with each other…Week 9 will be the eighth all-time meeting between Thurston and the Pirates, and first since 1962
Thoughts from Frank: The tell-tale stretch for Riverview is Weeks 4-6. Winning at Navarre Field is never easy, but throw in a visit from Milan a week later, followed by a trip to Airport, and there isn’t a lot of wiggle room for the Pirates. The Week 8 showdown with Grosse Ile could very well be the Game of the Year in the Huron League.
Would LOVE to see Riverview dump Romulus and upgrade week 1. The Pirates will be a league contender and a Regional Power as long as Coach Mac and the T stay.
Would love to see them add the likes of Chelsea, Rouge, Bedford or Country Day to the slate.
