Larson’s Bar and Grill Playoff Breakdown (week 8 edition)

Well here we are already in week 8, with a few teams looking ahead to the playoffs while others still have some work left to do.  Let’s take a look at each team’s chances and possible pre-district matchups.

Airport–  Yes Airport.. they still have a slight chance to make it in.  They would need to win out of course and that would mean beating both Milan and Tecumseh.  Not an easy task the Jets are left with.  The good news however, is that both Milan and Tecumseh would have maybe enough wins to boost Airport’s playoff point total.  Just maybe enough points to get them in.  Its a long shot at this point BUT the Jets still have life.  The Jets enrollment would currently place them right at the border of D3-4.  *Edit* Frank did the numbers and he doesn’t think Airport can get in.  I still have a ray of hope however.
Possible first round matchups: D3- @Carlson; D4- @Divine Child, @River Rouge

Bedford–  The Kicking Mules already have the requisite 6 wins to get them in.  They are now playing for a better seed and home games.  I see them finishing 7-2 with most likely 1 home game.  The Mules will be in D2.
Possible first round matchups: Woodhaven

Carlson–  At 7-0, the Marauders are in the playoffs.  Like Bedford, they are trying to sow up a #1 seed and up to 3 home games.  Carlson will most likely be in D3.
Possible first round matchups: NB Huron, Romulus, Melvindale

Flat rock.  At 5-2, the Rams are in.  They will have enough playoff points to get in with just 5 wins.  Of course if they win out, they may be looking at a home game in week 10.  Flat Rock will be in D4.
Possible first round macthups: Tecumseh, Milan, @River Rouge, Detroit Mumford

Huron– It’s my opinion that Huron is in with 5 wins.  That is a good thing because they have 2 tough games remaining.   They are in the same boat as FR.  Win out and maybe a home game(will be hard with Carlson and View most likely in their district)… lose out and you will be on the road vs a juggernaut. Huron will be D3.
Possible first round matchups: @Carslon, @Riverview

Ida– At 6-1, Ida is in.  Playing for home games at this point.  There aren’t many D5 times who will qualify in our area.  By the looks of things, Ida will be placed in a very tough district with Lansing Catholic and AAGR.
Possible first round matchup: AAGR

Milan– The Big Reds need 1 more win to have a pretty good shot at getting in with 5.  Win out and they are in automatically with 6.  Milan will be D4.
Possible first round matchups: @Chelsea,@Divine Child, @Flat Rock

Monroe– The Trojans need to win out.  I think 5 will get them in with a win over Fordson.  Monroe would be in D1.
Possible first round matchups: @Belleville, @Fordson, @Cass Tech

Riverview– At 6-1, the Pirates are in the playoffs.  Like a few others we mentioned, they are playing for a good seeding and home games. Riverview will be D3.
Possible first round matchups: Romulus, Melvindale, Huron

SMCC– The Falcons will get in with 5.   6 wins might get them a home game.  SMCC will be D7.
Possible first round matchups: Riverview GR, @Delta Prep, @Hudson, @Madison Heights, Clinton

*note* Everyone should be rooting for the teams they beat to win(you get more PP that way).  Week 9, everyone should be rooting for the teams they played to win.

  1. I noticed snooze has a potential round 2 matchup between Belleville and Saline. I would travel to watch that one. Belleville would come close to beating Rutgers. Lol!

  2. Actually calpreps is super accurate. Their prediction rate is excellent. I have followed that site since I started the blog. I run scenarios all the time and they are super close on things when the games actually happen.

  3. Flat Rock could not beat any of those teams. Have you seen any of them play? And Cal Preps doesn't hold too much weight honestly. Wait till you see SMCC play NDP. If I'm wrong then SMCC will be in that game. I don't see it. With Chelsea, NDP, DC and Rouge, you're dealing with some really good coaches. Coaches that have won multiple district, regional championships and making it to Ford Field. Pat Fox, Brad Bush, Corey Parker…. These are really good coaches with better overall teams and talent then anyone in the Huron League.

Example. Chelsea is down this season talent wise compared to the last few years. Chelsea beat Milan by 3 scores although Milan has been beat up and has 20 guys. It is what it is. Milan dominated Flat Rock and it was a 17 point game before a late hook and ladder under two min. Credit FR for beating Riverview. I don't see that happening 8 out of 10 times and I think Riverview has gotten much better as the year has went on. Huron has the most talent like every year hands down and should not has lost a game this year if the coach played the QB he had last year and not his son. Play calling is bad and the talent they have has overshadowed the other things. Like almost losing to an average AP team and losing to a 500 SMCC team that is down compared to most years regarding talent.

I do think Riverview could compete and possibly beat DC, Chelsea, and maybe NDP if they played great games. No one else in this league would IMO. I think that will be seen next week when SMCC plays NDP. The good thing is we will get to see how good some of these teams are with how the districts fall in D-3 and D-4.

  4. Snooze 2 you has Riverview and Huron in the same D3 district. Also has Milan and Flat Rock in the same district in d4 with Chelsea and Tecumseh. Milan going to Chelsea and Flat Rock hosting Tecumseh.

  5. Are there going to be a lot of 5 win teams in the playoffs this year? Seems like everything I am reading shows is predicting a lot of 5 win teams getting in. If so a good number of our teams look like they are going to get in.

  6. neutral field
    [2017] River Rouge (MI) 34, [2017] Riverview (MI) 31

    neutral field
[2017] Riverview (MI) 28, [2017] Notre Dame Prep (Pontiac, MI) 14

    DC 31 View 24

    [2017] Chelsea (MI) 21, [2017] Riverview (MI) 17

All the games are close says calpreps. I think view would haves great shot vs all those teams. Rock could compete as well.

  7. Riverview has a nice team this season, but all of those teams could beat Riverview. Not saying Riverview couldn't beat them on any given day other than Rouge who would put up at 50 on them. Might give up 28, but there would be no stopping Rouge. 10-15 D-1 cats will do that for you.

Notre Dame Prep is good again this year. We will find out how good they are week 9 against SMCC which I don't see being a great game against Pat Fox's crew. I think they beat SMCC by 21 or more.

Chelsea is always good and is much better Defensively this year then anyone in this league. Held a decent Milan team to 7 points. My opinion. And the last time they played Riverview in the playoffs, they won by 50 at Riverview.

Not sold on Divine Child, but when you have two of the top ten players in the state going to U of M and MSU, I'm guessing they could compete in the Huron League. Don't think they are a great team by any means.

  8. Flat Rock will be D4. The top teams in Flat Rock's potential region will be no better IMO than Riverview(who you beat). Flat Rock is looking at Divine Child, Notre Dame, Chelsea, Rouge. Those would be the best in the region.

  9. In the old playoff format, when Flat Rock was about half the size of the rest of the schools in the Huron League, we always that if we were able to win enough games that playing in the Huron League would mean once we got in to the playoffs the teams we would play wouldn't be as tough. Is this still true with the new playoff format? Or has enrollment numbers at Flat Rock increased enough that it doesn't matter as much? I'm looking forward to seeing the Rams in the playoffs. Since my team won't be in the playoffs here in CO, I may try to fly back to watch a game!

  10. I would really like to know what Chris has to say about these games…Chris Gorham!! He has that awarded winning smile..but never says a thing. Hmmmm???

  11. Nothing better than playoff football. Can't wait for it to get here.

Gary, will you be broadcasting SMCC football throughout the playoffs on Nashicon?

  12. It will be interesting when Ida gets into the playoffs. At the beginning of the season I would not have bet money on them to get to the playoffs. But after the game against Hudson, you can't count them out. They may have lost 18 experienced players this year but the have pulled out all the stops and pushed forward without those big guys. They have some great athletes on that team. I am very excited for those young men. They have worked very hard to get where they are.
