Friday Night Victors Thoughts and Questions

Nice win for Airport!

I really wished Bedford would have won that game. You have no idea!

You think they are happy at Carlson after they stoled Giarmo away?

Was there 5 weeks of frustration in those 72 points?

Is it safe to assume that Erie Mason threw the ball all over the place?

Way to go Rams!

Grosse Ile battled, credit to Bodner and the kids for playing UD Jesuit.

At 5-4, Huron looks like they still get in.

Jeff Potter, 7-2 in his first year at Ida. Way to go!

I really thought Jefferson would get one this week.

The Big Reds only dressed 19, but Milan has some great players.

Sounds like Monroe gave Fordson all they could handle.

Choo? Choo?

If the Falcons get in the playoffs, there isn’t anyone in Division 7 other than Pewamo-Westphalia that wants to play them.

I swear there were a few plays tonight where Milan’s Michael Furtney caved the entire Lincoln defensive line in.

I’m really looking forward to filming the week 10 picks. Playoff football is great!

Was I too harsh this week this week on video? My wife thought I was.

It wouldn’t surprise me if Bedford beats an undefeated Wyandotte in the playoffs.

  1. This comment is in response to the Milan post made on Oct 21 at 1:04AM. Yes this is the best job Hoskins has done putting pieces together to make a playoff team, but I sure would love to know who the so called football experts are in the Milan stands that think 5 kids dropping there heads and hitting nothing on a 60yd TD run is funny. Film don't lie. When the teaching stops, so does the coaching. Sure hope you do not coach MYF.

  2. "I was at the Lincoln/ Milan game last night. Lincoln better play a whole lot better next week than they did last night if they want to move on in the playoffs. Unless they didn't want to show too much. Very vanilla game plan."

I think this is exactly the case, Grandpa. I felt that as long as Lincoln was able to move the ball on the ground with the QB and RB, there was no reason to open it up. I don't think Lincoln stayed away from the pass because it wasn't working, I think they chose not to use it any more than they did because they didn't want their whole playbook on tape. Of course, I could be wrong.

Lincoln went exclusively to the air in their 2 minute drill before the half and quickly scored. They also went to the air on a 3rd and long in the 2nd half and picked up the first on a pass across the middle. Milan was able to get some pressure in the backfield, but no so much that Lincoln had to dig very deep in the playbook.

Milan's been accused over the years of a very vanilla game plan as well, but if a team is executing there's no reason to switch it up. If a team isn't executing, the coaches have a choice to either stay stubborn or dial up plays that they are less confident in–plays that their team likely has fewer reps running in practice.

  3. They may have to sign off, but they can't delay it or stop it. Some schools may delay transcripts. Athletic motivated transfers are tough to prove. Remember, AD's still have to work with each other. So to put the hammer down on people isn't always the smartest play. I look for the MHSAA to change the transfer rule to 180 days very soon. It may get challenged in court, but I believe it will happen.

  4. EM,
I thought you were an Airport guy. You now seem to be the website police. What do you care about what somebody says about SMCC?

  5. The school district the student is leaving does have to sign off on the student. Depending on when this takes place, could depend on how much of a sporting season a player could miss.

ALSO, most always, here in good ole Monroe County, a student states they are doing school of choice for academic reasons, so the down time is only 180 days. If our AD's around here would put the hammer down, 99% of the time students do not switch schools for academics. If the AD protests this, the school of choice student could very well have to sit out a year for sports. If this would start happening, it would definitely discourage school of choice.

In the past few years 2 students/players actually left Bedford to play at a school here in town. For Academic reasons. Come on?? Really. Bedford has some of the best academics in Monroe County. No student would leave there if that were true.

  6. Flat Rock playoff points just below Rouge, 76.111 shows value of playing bad teams at larger class schools. Combined record of all 9 teams played is a dismal 32-49, yet they will get a home field game.

  7. School of choice is pretty simple. If a school opts to be school of choice, they have to decide how many school of choice kids they want. I'll use Huron as an example since I live in the district. Every year Huron will list how many school of choice kids they are taking by grade. It is usually less than 5 per grade. If Huron has 5 school of choice openings, they will have an open enrollment period. All applications received by that date will be considered. If they have 5 applications or less all of those kids will get in unless they have been expelled from a school or something. If they have more than 5, they go into a lottery and they have a drawing. Also, Huron only accepts students from Wayne County. I believe that is determined by Wayne RESA. Other schools may accept more or less, but the process is the same. The school district that the student is leaving has no say in whether that student can attend another school or not.

  8. Chris do you know anything about how school of choice works? Just curious if the school district has to release a kid wanting to go to a different school? Or does that district have the right to deny a transfer?

  9. This is where Kipf needs to ride woolford and marino give the ball to your biggest play makers and see what happens if they have anything under 10+ carries each game in the playoffs I'd be disappointed in Kipf's coaching

  10. Flat Rock pulled most of their starters and still scored and held off any TDs from Huron Ann Arbor. And if you were there you would have heard the fans go crazy when 81 got to play defense!!! Hats off to Huron #5 for his understanding and ease with Paul. Go Paul. He was so excited after the game even after the first hard hit before huron relazied what was happening.

  11. There are 223 teams that qualified for the playoffs by winning enough games. That means they are the are going to take33 teams that did not win enough games. All of the Huron League teams with 5 wins should be in

  12. 12:08 you sound like a broken record. How many times has someone called SMCC small up front and been bit in the behind? Some people never learn. EM

  13. No. Not sure where you saw or heard that. SMCC is D7. Addison just slipped into D7 this week after being Projected D8 all year. It looks like @ Addison for SMCC.

  14. I'm not so sure if the recruiting thing has been going on forever. I think it started getting heavy when school of choice became an option. Back in the 90's and 2000's you had teams winning with there own kids. Personally I do not like school of choice whatsoever because it gives schools an easier path to build a dynasty. Then again I guess it is good in regards to a kid getting a better opportunity somewhere else. We all can say what we want but I'm sure everyone on here wants nothing but the best opportunity for there kids. Even if it involves relocating to another district.

  15. Best of luck to all local teams in the playoffs. To all the teams that didn’t make it, hold your heads up high. Please understand that through the process, you have made yourself a better person. No it’s not your coaches fault, it’s not a specific persons fault, it’s just they way it goes sometimes in life. I wish for all you young men to grow up and become productive members of society. When you have a son or daughter someday, please remember this game is but a small moment in their lives. As a parent be there for them, believe in them, don’t criticize their play, the play of their teammates, or their coaches.

  16. Newest projections show Tecumseh not making it thanks to Airport, FR playing Mumford in a district with Milan and Rouge. Huron-Carlson and View-Trenton in a district. SMCC looks to be making it easily looking at their playoff points compared to other schools with five wins higher than D6.

  17. Mr. Football,
Any high school in our state that has won a state championship has recruited and picked up players to get them there. Nobody is going to win a state championship without bringing in a few guys. Sometimes they recruit a few, sometimes good players ask for school of choice, or sometimes it is both.

I would suggest you go through the rosters of the teams who win state championships in our state and see where the players are from. It will surprise you.

I do not agree with this, but until local AD's file complaints and disrupt the process, it will just continue. Apparently this year is Belleville's turn.

  18. What are Smcc’s chances to get in Gary? Nervous dad who doesn’t want to see his sons football career end. Thx for all you guys do

  19. Chris, the MHSAA really needs to come down on Schools like Belleville, Saline, Cass Tech and a few others. I find it ironic someone posted an article earlier with Fred Jackson complaining about someone recruiting players. His own son played 4 games for Ann Arbor Huron and then week 5 he was standing on Saline’s sidelines the rest of his sophomore year practicing with Saline. I have seen Belleville play 3 times this year now, once on film, and twice in person. They are so poorly coached, there is no way I would send my son to play for that coach. He will grow up to play with his friends from childhood.

    Signed,

    Mr. Football

  20. 12:53 am, Please keep in mind 4 of 5 SMCC wins came against a 0,2,4,and 5 win team
They failed to beat the best of the league in Riverview, Flat Rock, and Milan. Just saying. The one win against PW is good, but not the rest of their record. We will see what happens. Jefferson did get in last year with some lesser wins. You never know.

  21. Got to see John Lako play today. He is a D1 player for Akron. Does see a lot of play time. If many of you don't remember him, he was one significant addition to the SMCC state title team. Playing LB and FB, if I remember correctly. Probably the piece that got them over the top. Congrats to him for still playing football today and at the D1 level at that. Too bad he and his family are from Grosse Ile, no idea how he ended up on SMCC's team.

  22. Airport will return 5 on offense and 5 on defense. How is that a lot? Besides, I'm the only Troll that can start the trolling on Airport…

  23. Back up QB this year for airport was a junior named Luke Goins. Didn't see any game time action at QB. Played DB/WR

  24. Just an FYI. Tecumseh beat Ypsi Lincoln this year. Lincoln beat Bedford last week and just beat Milan. So not sure Tecumseh would struggle against the huron league.

  25. 12:45, yes Flat Rock beat an 1800 student class A school in Ann Arbor Huron. Bad news about Ann Arbor Huron is they have not won a game in 3 full seasons and only 1 game the year before that. I hope all Huron League teams do well in the playoffs. The league schedule prepares all the teams so they are ready for anything that gets thrown at them because of the diversity of the offenses used in the leasgue.

  26. Let me rephrase myself-Tecumseh would struggle against Huron League teams. Not sure how many. Don't want to discredit what Airport did. They played a great game. Go Jets!!!

    The Troll

  27. Flat Rock will beat Tecumseh by 20. Tecumseh would struggle against all of the Huron League teams from what I saw last night. Milan and Huron will end up licking out big time because of Airports BIG win last night. Go Jets!! Build on it for the future.

    The Troll

  28. Praise and accolades to the Airport team for helping all the 5-4 Huron league teams into the playoffs! I know you needed that.

  29. Coach Hoskins and the Milan coaching staff HAVE implemented some new wrinkles, just nothing as drastic as switching to the T. No one on this blog has mentioned that the week of the Gross Ile game, they moved Michael Furtney off the line of scrimmage and into the backfield to their "H" Back position. The H Back in Milans system is basically the fullback, or lead blocker, that you would see in a traditional power I or pro style offense. As Chris pointed out, he's been absolutely devastating in that role, destroying opponents lineman, and crushing linebackers when he gets to the second level. He's athletic enough to do it, and it was an excellent coaching move.

One of the main reasons Coach Hoskins has been so successful is that he has had his system drilled into these kids since Youth League Football. They are disciplined and run his stuff with great precision, and play fast because of their complete understanding of their responsibilities. Low numbers and injuries for the Big Reds has been an issue all year, but asking kids that have been running this system since they were 10 to learn and execute a new scheme just doesn't make sense.

I've been watching Milan since we moved to town 8 years ago, and this might be Jesse and his staffs best coaching job, all things considered.

  30. Flat rock went from playing slapless summit academy and hazel park to playing 2 class A schools in their non league. Garden City had a down year and Ann Arbor Huron is still an upgrade from last years schedule. They have 1800 kids, Flat rock has a 1/3rd of that…

  31. I'm not going to mention any team or names, but any parent who publicly displayes anger to their kid not being able to go back into a game because of injury, instead of worrying about the kids own well being, is despicable!

  32. There is no way Milan or anyone can implement the T in 1 week. Stick with what you've got and run the ball right behind Furtney and you might have a good shot at winning. Good luck to everyone!

    The Troll

  33. Lol. Milan switch to the T? How would that flyer look hanging in the hallways in the ypsi middle schools? “Dear potential D1 recruit, come on out to be part of the big reds as we tighten things up by grinding out yards in the trenches” It’s funny how faithful fans are ready to dump on the coaching and the system when expectations are not met. Milan has some great players this year and were hurt significantly by injuries and numbers. They have been at the top of the league for several years by giving the ball to #9 in space. Be careful what you wish for or you might see more Belleville flyers in your hallways.

  34. I don't want to be too critical of a coach that has worked wonders with the hand he's been dealt, but I wonder why Hoskins and Milan didn't switch to the T this year. Milan has one of the best O-Lines in the league and they are short staffed at skilled positions. The skilled guys they do have are playing both ways and are exhausted. Too many stretch plays and QB sneaks with kids that have nothing left in the tank. Milan does not pass that often anyways, so thus why not try the T. Milan looks like they might travel to Chelsea next week (who already beat them), so why not go down fighting, work in the T this week of practice. I know it's too late to implement a new offense, but how hard can the T be? Hand off to one of three runners and let your O-Line get you 4 yards. Just one man's crazy mind working here.

  35. I think the playoff system is fine the way it is. People schedule who they want and play their league games, but you still have to pretty much win 6. Scheduling isn't a problem if you look ahead.

  36. I was at the Lincoln/ Milan game last night. Lincoln better play a whole lot better next week than they did last night if they want to move on in the playoffs. Unless they didn't want to show too much. Very vanilla game plan. Just looking at the playoff points this morning, I think Airport beating Tecumseh last night helped the Big Reds get in to the playoffs.

  37. You weren't too hard. Honestly in accessing facts is often not politically correct. TOO BAD! FH Harrison has been doing the same thing as Belleville for 35 years. Cass Tech, same. The "system" messed up. Parochial schools like DCC, OLSMCC offer free tuition to "under privileged" athletes! I love sports but HS Sports dynasties send a bad message to kids.

  38. You were not too hard. FH Harrison has been doing the same thing as Belleville for 35 years. Cass Tech same. You shouldn't keep us in the dark re the kid going to Belleville.

  39. You were not too hard. FH Harrison has been doing the same thing as Belleville for 35 years. Cass Tech same. You shouldn't keep us in the dark re the kid going to Belleville.

  40. I think there are some people that weren’t too sure about both FR and Riverview’s ability to win games they are supposed to win. To restate, not all, but some. I think they proved that last night. Great job.

  41. If Wyandotte and Woodhaven are in a district with Lincoln and Bedford as expected and Carlson is with Riverview that means the overrated DRL won't win a single district title.

  42. Jack Giarmo vs Riverview in the 2nd round would be fun. Old school Huron League style slobberknocker. Giarmo 12-6 all-time vs Riverview. But, I'd give the slight edge to the View in this match up. Thoughts?

  43. I want to toss this out to all those who "know it all" about the Michigan playoff system. I have no problem with having a system that rewards a 6 win season (good for them) but I think that there should be a much bigger point allowance to schools that are willing to play better competition. No knock on Flat Rock as they had a great year, but their non-league opponents won a total of 3 games (all won by Garden City), while SMCC's non-league won 15 games – Westphalia (C) had 8 and Notre Dame Prep (B) had 7. Milan finished at 5-4 having played Lincoln (A) and Chelsea (B) who combined for 15 wins.

There should be a bigger reward for playing better competition. Thoughts?
