Friday Night Victors Thoughts and Questions

Congrats to Coach Derek McLaughlin and the Riverview Pirates.

Looks like I underestimated Ypsi Lincoln.

That was a different brand of football over at Carlson on Friday

Cheers Cheers for ol’ Flat Rock High. Congrats on the playoffs.

The SMCC defense hasn’t given up a TD in 3 games.

Dexter was much needed medicine.

Were the offenses that good or the defenses that bad  over in Carleton yesterday?

They had the official mic’d for calls yesterday at Carlson. Pretty cool.

Ida?

The power rankings will most likely get a shake up.

Apparently I was wrong, damn has origins from the old French word dampner.

Big games, tough opponents for playoff hopefuls Milan, Huron, Monroe and SMCC this week.

After seeing the field at Carlson yesterday, somebody in the area needs to get field turf.

Where was Gary last night?

Players play, coaches coach and parents cheer, not jeer.

Aren’t most QB’s good character guys?

Jefferson will get a win, I guarantee it.

Does Grosse Ile have a week 9 game?

Ting or Ted? It really means the same thing.

Great job by the Carlson brass last night, they really know how to run a game.

Is the Huron League any good this year?

  1. I believe Milan is firmly in D4 this season (granted, it's crazy to see Milan go from 1016 students in 2011 and 772 in 2017, but that's a discussion for another day).

8:30 did bring up a good point that I meant to mention earlier. In midseason, the coaching staff decided to move Furtney from OT to H-back/TE. While Furtney is still most often blocking on the strong side edge, that edge is extended out a bit further now. Furtney can also line up as a lead blocker inside or shift before the snap. With a roster size as small as Milan's, you need to maximize the versatility of your players. We've even seen the big fella haul in a few passes since the position change.

Props to Milan's coaching staff for making that change and to Furtney and his teammates for embracing it.

  2. I saw that scrimmage and at the time I thought Riverview was the better team. With that said, we are eight weeks removed from that point and I think Carlson probably has more talent and more speed. Carlson looked really good for about a half yesterday but was ultimately beaten by a very very good Wyandotte team. I do think Riverview could beat them especially if the game was on grass at Riverview. If they play in the playoffs it will be most likely at Carlson on the turf. I think that's a different game.

  3. Chris can comment as well. I've seen both play. View would have to play very well to win. They did scrimmage and I've heard View won the scrimmage. It's a scrimmage but both teams were trying. I think it's a great game.

  4. @6:52, I have to agree with you. Yes, Huron has built a huge football program over the years. They've even had some successes. But I'm sorry. What have you got to show for it? Until you get some hardware, you are the Cleveland Indians of the Huron League. I'd call you the Chicago Cubs, but they won last year. If you'd rather have a football reference, you're the Detroit Lions.

  5. I'm not posting that, because I don't know if it's true and quite frankly that would be something that we need to be handled by the administration. That happened a long time ago back in FR and it was found out that it was an inside job. If you've been around long enough, you know what I'm talking about.

  6. 5:05 i don't mean to rub the trophy in the face of the Huron team itself. I just like to let some of the arrogant Huron fans know that they have never won a league title. CHOO CHOO!!!

  7. If all the chirping was going on during the game then the Refs did not do their job period!! I try to never bad mouth the officials as I was one for fifteen years but there is no business for any trash talking during a game!! There isn't nothing wrong with stopping the game and calling out both Head coaches and giving both teams stern warnings and then every time after throw the flag!! 15 yard penalties every time it happens will be an un sportsman like penalty! after 2 the same player will be ejected and after 3 for any on the team the head coach is ejected!! Then they'll have to explain to the A.D. why they got ejected!! That little old yellow flag could cause a job or two if need be!! Besides there is no place in sports for that to happen! After the game it's the head coaches responsibility!!

  8. It is what it is at huron. I dont care what tge record says its been a very disappointing year. We had very high expectations. This team has never had a superstar but always played well together. We have plenty of talent that has not been ysed in the right positions. The offense went 8 quaters with only 1 touchdown. I luv these boys i have watched them grow through out the years. Just hate to see the moral so low on such good kids. Im very proud of these boys no matter what and no one should count them out. Go cheifs and keep your heads up

  9. Maybe not Chris, but just the thought of hosting seems unimaginable. I looked back at the comments and I’m still trying to see where Flat Rock posters showed that they “didn’t know how to act”. Sure, there is some trash talking, but it’s a rivalry, and somewhat expected. I’m guessing there are some posts that Gary has seen which did not make it through, because I’m really not seeing it. As for the actions of students, vandalism by either team should never be condoned, but I’m not aware of anything that happened prior to the game by either team, aside from the rock getting painted. The only reason people were up in arms over this was that it was done by students attending welding at FR on school time, but otherwise, not a big deal. Anyway, HL great season, congratulations to Riverview, and thank you for all you and Gary do to keep us entertained and informed.

  10. Hey 4:33 I think Huron would love another shot against Riverview. Let's see Riverview only scored 6 points in second half of that blow out with all the starters in almost to the end of the game. If Huron could ever get there offense on track And that's a BIG IF at this point I think that could be a good game. Careful what you wish for the CHOO CHOO could get knocked off its tracks. GO Chiefs

  11. Gary,
What’s with the negativity towards Flat Rock? I don’t see where Flat Rock is behaving that badly. So proud of the Ram coaches and players for building/buying into a winning culture that has been special to watch over the last couple of years, culminating in what has been a special year up to this point. Take care of business next week and get ready to host a playoff game, a thought several years ago, during winless seasons with running clocks, seemed unthinkable. Good luck to all of the Huron Leauge next week, and into the playoffs for those teams that qualify.

  12. Mr Choo Choo,
I hope the kids of Riverview appreciate winning the league championship because of the hard work they put in and commitment to team over self. Not to rub a trophy in the face of others. Congrats to the Riverview boys! Good luck to all the Huron league boys this last week of the regular season.

  13. Huron does have a lot of talent. Not sure what's going on there but talent wise I would say they have the most in the league. Playoffs might be where Huron puts it all together.

  14. Well all i heard early on was how Huron had the most talent in the league. Where have all the Huron chirpers gone???? Even if they sneak in, they will get blown out by Carlson or Riverview. Maybe if they play again Riverview can bring it's Huron League Championship trophy, since Huron has never seen one. CHOO CHOO!!!

  15. Carlson has more playoff points than Riverview right now. That doesn't look like it will change. Carlson would host Riverview if they happen to play. It looks like Huron could get in with a 5–4 record.

  16. Who would get home field between Riverview and Carlson if they both have one loss? And will Huron get in with 5 wins? EM

  17. Gary, do you have Milan in the playoffs right now, or do you think they have to beat what looks like a really good Lincoln team this upcoming week?

  18. How come no one is talking about Airports special teams? They have given up so many touchdowns the past 4 weeks and they haven't changed a thing, but they are quick to pull kids on their defense for making a mistake.

  19. Was a good game at Airpoty last night! After reading about them here on the blog, I thought to myself, this might be an easy win! Boy was I wrong lol I do know that anything can happen when the teams play each other!!! But then boys from a Airport should be proud of how they payed last night!! If they come out playing like that against all teams, they would definitely have a better shot at winning!!! The coaches did a great job at getting them boys ready for last night and it showed!!’ I was glad to see a Big Red win, but good job to the Jets as well!!!!

  20. I think View can really give Carlson a game. Carlson has speed, but I don't see Carlson putting 30 up on View. It will be an offensive battle. Carlson will use their speed, View will pound the rock and control the clock and time of posession as they always do.

  21. My point is this. Saying how well View does vs Carlson will determine how good Flat Rock is, is kind of silly.

We know the league has no world beaters. But View is a good team in D3. Rock is good in D4. And CC is good in D7.

All about who is in your district come playoff time.

  22. The league is 5-3 in non league games. Right now that means it is a good league. Next Saturday, there are 8 more games to add to that record and we will have a better idea if the league is good or not. Then pre-district games will add to the body of work by the Huron league. I think it will be proven that the league is good by district champions (2 or more), but some will say it isn't good unless it wins 4 State Championships in 3, 4, 5 and 7.

  23. Gray awfully sensitive… I just said using how riverview competes vs Carlson will be a good measuring stick. Seeing how the Huron league champ does vs the #2 downriver league team is a fair comparison. If Riverview loses by 30 I think that would mean something as to the quality of the league. If it's close or they win I think that would speak volumes about the league.

  24. I personally think the league is great this season. Anyone can beat anyone. Many great games. But if Carlson beats View then the league is down and sucks. Sorry sir. Doesn't compute.

  25. Ok. Carlson is probably a top 10 team in D3. Nearly beat a top 10 team in D2. So if View loses to Carlson it doesn't mean the HL is down. That's an odd jump you are trying to make.

How about just say. I don't think the league is good this year. And. Don you know, that gets said every year by somebody. This year, its you.

  26. I think a Riverview vs Carlson playoff match up will answer if the Huron league had lots of good teams or a bunch of average teams. Carlson has speed speed and more speed, division 1 type speed.

  27. Why did it take 8 weeks for AP to spread it out a bit when they have athletes who need space??? They have 3 good backs and qb w some decent kids at receiver who can catch as well. It shouldn't have taken until week 8 for this to happen. Seems like they watched film from the game last year agasint Milan. I recall a very similar gameplan

  28. Watching Riverview this season has been a real treat. After devastating injuries last year and a season ending surgery for a senior leader to start out this year, the Bucs found their identity and literally ran through the HL. The loss to Flat Rock was a turning point for the season and I think it brought them together to play as a team. No disrespect to Rams, they were on a mission and it's great to see them beat Huron and make it to the post season. I think the Pirates have a fair chance to succeed in the playoffs. I underestimated Carlson vs Wyandotte and a Pirate vs Marauder matchup would be a great game to watch. Last night was packed with alumni and fans that haven't been this excited about football in Riverview for a long time.

  29. Who was the Lush guy on the radio with Grodi last night? Excellent job! Very entertaining and knowledgeable! Gary…your job might be in jeopardy!

  30. Combination of both in Carleton last night. Obviously everyone knows Airport's defense has struggled but Milan's offense is hard to stop with the Furtney kid throwing kids all over the field. Wow he's good!!! Airport's offense played the best they've played all year from what I saw. Mixed it up real well with the pass.
