Mid-Week Thoughts and Questions

Wednesdays are always a little quiet on the blog so I thought I would throw some thoughts and questions out there.

Should we even cover the schools whose coaches choose not to participate in the blog?

Readership of the blog is at an all time high. Thanks for your continued support.

We have a special guest for our week 5 picks video that will air later tonight.

Big game for Riverview this week.

Does anyone know why Monroe and Bedford are playing on Saturday this week?

We do have plans to expand the blog next season.

Any thoughts on the best overall players in the coverage area?

I think Bedford, Carlson, Flat Rock, Huron, Ida, and Riverview are in the playoffs. Not sure about the rest.

Is the Downriver League down overall?

Beyond Hudson, is anyone in the LCAA that good?

Does anyone know how much football officials make?

Sometimes I feel like I now officially have a second job. It’s okay, I enjoy it for the most part.

If I appear to be a little whiny today, I’m just imitating some of our anonymous commenters lately.

The playoff models are out. Check out www.snooze2you.com

Thoughts on Michigan @ Purdue or Notre Dame @ Michigan State?

Forward down the field!

  1. They stopped the play and took away a completion I believe. I'm just wondering what happened. It seemed like to mess up by the refs.

  2. The idadvertant whistle in the 4th quarter on the cmpletd pass for Jefferson was really bad on their last drive against AP with about 7 min left. Total game changer and feel bad for Jefferson. Turns into a 3rd and out and Jefferson punts. Sad when officials change the game. No doubt Jeffrson should have won.

Chris and Gary…. Did you guys see or hear about this? I couldn't believe it when I saw it.

  3. Let's think about for a second, how many teams in the state wish they could sniff the success CC has had over the last 50 years. Or the last 10 years. Or the last 5 years.

From time to time ALL programs have down years. As a CC guy, I'll take the very few we have had and be grateful for all the great ones.

The kids are practicing hard and playing hard. It's all you can ask.

  4. I have followed CC football for a long time. I had my own kids and grandkids play in the program. I initially posted anonymous about some of our players and coaches. I feel I made honest assessments of them including the qb's. since running the T CC has had a qb that could either run fast or throw well in play action. At both levels now it's struggle. Teams that have given them trouble over the years have had qb's that were either fast , could throw or both. Even when they made it to the state finals. Physical play is a major part of the T system. If you don't have it for four quarters you struggle. This was true last year, this year, 2002, and 2011. That said you just don't throw out your system year in year out, that's what losing programs do. But you do have to find the right players to play in your system. CC looks like they are struggling to find those player at all levels. So I will apologize if the truth told hurts feelings. But it is an honest opinion of what shows on the failed. To my critics point, it does go far beyond the qb situation. Coaches should be accountable as well. PW an ok win. But they play a weak schedule. Milan was close early but when they decided to be physical CC folded, Riverview totally out played out boys, and Flatrock was an even match and I will leave it at that. Hopefully the kids keep playing hard and gain experience.

  5. The Airport Jets have played with heart and determination this season. No reason to take that way from any team. Good luck to all the teams this Friday .

  6. I agree, Doug does a good job with the TCC but you guys offer so much more than just scores and stats. It would be nice to hear your thoughts and insight to whiteford and summerfield.

  7. Good point on the weather. Could be a good weeekend for upsets. Some of the smaller, well conditioned teams could pull one off.

  8. Yep no need for negativity. Just enjoy and let your sons enjoy the last few year most will ever get playing football! Still wondering how enjoyable 80plus degree football is going to be tonight and tomorrow? But I will be there watching sons making memories.

  9. I think we, as readers have a tendency to focus on the negative too much. There are very few negative comments, yet most want to focus on those comments instead of the countless positive comments that are being made. How about the two great shows this week where we talked about players from the Huron League and then made picks on the games. How about Frank? He was awesome with his thoughts on Ida and Dundee. Better yet, how about focusing on how much fun and hard work the 500-600 boys playing football from freshmen to varsity in our coverage area.

  10. Man, this blog would be downright boring without all the Airport hype!! Although SMCC is starting to take some heat now too. Who's gonna get the beat down next??? Inquiring minds want to know!

  11. @5:07 – I read your acrimonious message and wondered "why so much hate"? After pondering it for awhile, maybe you misunderstood my original post. My post was in response to the 9/20/17 12:13 post that said:

    1. "I think you guys are still sleeping on AP…Deserve to be in the talk"….earned it" My accurate comment is that you are clearly begging for recognition
    2. "Huron could have swung either way…potential to be undefeated" I saw that you didn't also include "Dundee and Jefferson could have swung either way". My accurate response is that you could be 1-3 which is simply a derivation on your thought that you could be undefeated (same logic).

MAYBE, you misunderstood my last comment that the results at the end of the year will verify who you are. Admittedly, if you have an inferiority complex, this could have been interpreted as saying you would be verified as being a bad team. In actuality, it simply meant you could be great or bad but you can't proclaim either until the games are played. But, I guess if you continue to post on this blog how good AP is, that will ultimately come true because the internet is never wrong.

Good luck to the Jets but please R-E-L-A-X!

P.S. Way to stay classy about your and mine parenting skills too. I'll have to revisit Dr. Spock's book where it says "to be the best parent ever, go on a blog and post anonymously how great your son's football team is". Typical AP Fan….

  12. I'm beginning to see why Airport coaching wants nothing to do with this blog. If anyone wants a daily dose of crybabies, and over the hill dad's that wanna be back on the playing field, this is the place to be! Good Luck Jets on the rest of your season,

    Signed,
    Not at all desperate

  13. …. and not to brag but I don't know of any other site that does what we do for football in their area. In know Doug Donnelly covers the TCC well, which is why we don't include Witeford or Summerfield.

Chris didn't start the site for thanks or "fame". He started it because in 2009, the are coverage was awful. It has since improved. Maybe, FNV had a little part in that.

  14. I do want to say though, mostly all of the coaches realize we are trying to help out area football and willfully participate. Many are forthright with stats and such. We appreciate them greatly.

  15. I think you are confusing two different questions answered. I believe both Mossberg and Humphrey are on their respective college teams.

In regards to the team who chose no to participate…. it's like we are stuck on the runway with them.

  16. I'm confused, I think Gary is referring to the two players being Humphrey and Mossburg but says THAT team. Is it only one team not participating or two because didn't those two players come from 2 different schools?

  17. Airport likes it's nail biters and has proven tough enough to come out of 3 of the 4 games with a win that were all close, one was arguably a defensive win against Grosse lle. With any team at any level to maintain your composure and win like they have at this level is incredible and note worthy! Its easy to crumble and give up. They've got some grit and determination and I'm a little nervous to watch them play Riverview. To dismiss them because they were close shows you know nothing about the game of football to those who are. I'm surprised to see a lack of civility on this particular post as well, this is the first week I've seen people get fired up and rude. That being said they've got a tough run ahead especially against my Pirates but they've earned some respect and recognition, they're contenders to say the least.

  18. I'd say no the downriver league isn't down this year. Carlson is having their best season in years. While Allen Park is having a down year, other teams have picked up the slack. Lincoln Park and Melvindale have played well but came up short, and Trenton and Woodhaven are always stiff competition. I just think the dynamic of the league has shifted because it isn't just a Wyandotte, Woodhaven, Allen Park dominated league. I think Riverview can pull it out against Airport. 2 impressive wins over SMCC and Milan. View simply didn't play well against Flat Rock and could have beaten them. View is loaded with talent and is tough in the trenches. I'm taking my bucs. As for college football I think Michigan will have a nice win over Purdue and State shouldn't have a problem with Notre Dame.

  19. 9:07- CC is not the CC of old. Milan is your signature win thus far. Riverview is a solid team, but only 1/2 way through the season. Lot a ball left to play. Good luck!

  20. @7:15 Riverview will beat Airport. "Your theory "Emotional win" is ridiculous, as we just beat SMCC the week before, for the first time in 5 years, or something like that. So THAT was emotional, then here comes Milan. Again, not supposed to win. We beat their butts!! Difficulty getting pumped up, two weeks in a row?! Have you seen us play? We never shut off! Riverview is a tough team. No doubt that your scoring is correct- just switch it to Riverview 32 Airport 25. P.S. I'm an Airport Alumni class of 1985!

  21. @7:15
Are you for real?? Everyone on here with the exception of a few cut all the other teams/players down!! Chris and Gary can't even do a "player of the week" without getting flack or someone saying that the winner wasn't deserving. So for you to say "it's all in fun" is ridiculous! There's nothing fun in watching your son's team and teammates get told every week to "just wait…your time to start losing games begins now. And if you say anything different then you're sadly mistaken…

  22. 7:15PM
You are so far from correct. Riverview is ALWAYS up, so don't worry about them getting pumped up for 3 games in a row. I have been watching this team for many years, and I have to say that they are clicking on all cylinders. You can speculate all you want about spreading it out, but they have a lot of speed on the outside as well. Keep your eyes peeled for Rice, Guthrie, Walker, Garza, Johnson, Rogers, etc. I know the boys up front on the O line will continue to dominate and open holes for our powerful backs. This will be another notch on the belt as the View continues to roll.

  23. AP deserves recognition when they win a game against an opponent from the HL w more than 1 win. Jefferson 0 wins. GI 1 win vs Jefferson. Until then, they've won games (barely) they should have against the weakest teams in the league.

Sorry parents, that's da truth. Beat Riverview and u actually earn the "respect" u so desperately want.

  24. 7:41- I watched some of Eads film. Big kid, but has a tendency to block once and pull his hands off. Doesn't sustain blocks. Milan's line, especially if Furtney is lined up against him, should dominate.

  25. To 2:04 You said one of my fans/alumni. I don't really have any special teams I root for.I just like to see and talk about good HS football games. Actually I am an Airport alumni. Pretty tricky uh smart guy.

  26. I don't think anyone in the lcaa is really a jaggernaught with Hudson being an exception..but boy that conference is rough on running backs…#ouch.

  27. Airport will beat Riverview and here's why: Riverview is coming off an emotional win against Milan. They will have difficulty getting pumped up 2 weeks in a row. Airport has the athletes to make Riverview spread out their defense. Riverview plays well in the trenches, but Airport knows that and will make them chase in the flats all night. Riverview will have some success running the T, but in the end Airport will outscore them. Final: Airport 32 Riverview 25

  28. 5:07 What is this word "haters" that you use. Just because we are on here having a little fun with some dialogg does not mean anyone is hating on anyone or any team. Wow lighten up a little. Geeezzz.

  29. Flat Rock will beat GI and here's why: Flat Rocks play makers will spread GI's young defense out and make them chase all night. Flat Rocks LB's will flow sideline to sideline snuffing out any sustained drives. Final: Flat Rock 35 GI 15

  30. Milan will beat Jefferson and here's why: Milan's line is just too big for Jefferson to have any success with the T. Milan has more weapons on offense than Jefferson and should be able to score at will. Final: Milan 42 Jefferson 6

  31. I have yet to see an Airport fan on here "begging" for anything. They've already proved the majority of the haters wrong. Don't you remember?— they were gonna be lucky to win one game let alone 3. That's what we were seeing on here a month ago. Grow up and wish the kids success, not failure. That's how I'm raising my kid, how about you 3:56pm??

  32. My upset pick of the week is SMCC over Huron and here's why: Huron has a propensity to come out flat and get behind by a few scores. SMCC chews up too much clock for Huron to come all the way back. Final: CC 28 Huron 22

  33. Gary you are right on about Airport, not a easy game remaining on the schedule. Hopefully they can raise some eyebrows by beating a good Riverview team on Friday. EM

  34. 1 – let me know who is paying $100/game for football officials. As someone correctly said, the Huron and Downriver Leagues were paying $55/game just recently for Varsity Games which is the same for Varsity Basketball.

2 – to the AP fans begging for recognition – you guys could easily be 1-3 too. You are what you are and the rest of the season will verify that.

  35. The c.c. haters are extremely quiet during any periods of success at any sport. I suppose it's easy to jump on the critic bandwagon during tough seasons. If cc wins…"they recruit ". If they lose…"see I told you they aren't any good." It would have been fun to read the basketball blog the last few years since it's departure. People tend to underestimate tradition and coaching in all high school sports.

  36. 12:50. CC is two years removed from a state championship. School of choice is the same as recruiting now but people tend to forget. The mighty is having a rough year but will be back with all the sophomores earning experience for years to come. There are a lot of senior lead teams in the league right now and that is why it's so even right now. Everyone relax and enjoy the ride. Teams that rarely get to brag about their squad are having a great blog year. Jealousy about the money we spend to send our kids to a private school is terrible. Beyond sports the school prepares the kids for life. It's always nice to have the best sports program from top to bottom as well. Haters will hate and I'm sure people will always do that for CC. You always hate what you want yourself.

  37. I think cover all teams just not as much coverage for those that don't participate. I think it is a huge week for most if not all the huron league teams. It will definitely answer some questions. The schedule was weird with 4 teams having a round robin to start the year. Downriver league is down. Wyandotte and Carlson are only teams that are stellar this year. Usually they have 4 teams.

  38. Disheartening? Hypocritical Catholics? Sounds like you are calling out a school and an entire religion. (which includes the kids and the players). Seems like it slipped through pretty easy. I think the guys do a pretty good job of supporting the kids and schools. I hope you have that same protective enthusiasm on Friday night wihile all of the kind words come bellowing out of the stands with a hint of whiskey. At least in this forum, you don't have to participate if the negativity becomes overwhelming. Not so much choice in the stands. I also realize that this sounds like a negative response, but it is intended to positively support the other readers that were shaking their heads when you shared your displeasure with Chris and Gary.

  39. To 1:22 One of your fans/alumni posted something negative about the Varsity QB that should not have been allowed on the blog. This was followed up with another negative comment about the jv QB. The negative comment about the jv QB was posted twice. Any other questions smart guy? Thank God I did not send my kids to SMCC. Too many coaches let go because of the strong arm tactics by disgruntled parents/boosters.

  40. It's those same CC fans/alumni/boosters who are responsible for the many great coaches being let go that spew the negativity.

  41. It's clear to me that the rest of Airport's schedule is very tough. They could lose them all from here. Or they could win a few. Who knows. The 2nd half of the season is much tougher for the jets.

  42. gary you threw the lure and i will bite it and run! pour some water on your reel so it doesnt overheat. airport has pretty much played to the level and sometimes above the level of there opponents each week. they have the best complete back field in the league on one team. a speed back, power back, shifty back, and QB that can run and pass. no team has a better/complete backfield period. defense and special teams a little shacky. defensive backs a little shacky. they have been in every game, even the NBH game you didnt think would be close. so why "the season starts now?" it started months ago when all these kids decided to be "ALL IN"….raised as a Chief….reborn as a JET

  43. It's very disheartening that you allow people to call kids/players negative things. I've noticed it mostly coming from the hypocritical Catholics at CC….forgive those who don't step on your toes!! Money can't always buy success. Oh how the mighty have fallen.

  44. The next couple weeks should sort things out in the HL. Huron has a tough schedule the rest of the way and Milan plays at Airport. Should be fun the rest of the way.

  45. # 7 Proud Milan Mom

i definitely appreciate everything you guys do for us!! I know some people have lost hope for Milan, but don't count them out just yet!!!!

  46. Big game for Airport as well as Riverview. I think you guys are still kind of sleeping on Airport. That Huron game honestly could of swung either way. Airport had the 'potential' to be undefeated (as of yet) and could win the league and make playoffs. I understand there are other good teams, Flatrock and Milan seem to be this Year, but I think Airport deserves to be in the talk? Even if they dont end up making it, they've earned it at this point haven't they? Anyway love the blog and hearing what you guys have to say!

  47. i think you have to cover all the schools regardless of the coaches – some coaches barely talk to the Monroe News or the News Herald or the Adrian paper. and i agree – most ref's get $100 for Varsity and $75 for JV – i think basketball is less???

  48. We have reached out to every coach. Most responded, others didn't while some politely declined participation. We have no problem with that, it just makes it hard on us when we get called out by their fan bases for lack of knowledge. Believe me, it happens a lot.

  49. Referee pay is determined by the leagues. most appear to be around 100.00 for varsity.

how would a school not participate in the blog/ do they have to email you stats?

  50. Wish you would elaborate on the non participating coaches. Also, readership might be at an all time high, but not enough people posting their insights. More posting = diverse opinions = good for the blog.

  51. Seems like just because Milan lost to Riverview, you have lost all hopes for them! Which is sad, because they still have a few of the greatest players in the league!!!! And maybe I'm wrong, but just my take on it!
