Airport never left the wing-t
To say great programs change with the times, is fundamentally not true. In SMCC's case Sandersen, Giarmo, and now Kipf are doing what they have always had success with. To say the best qb is on jv is crazy parent talk. The kid can throw some, but as a runner too slow and he is fragile when hit. Riverview was good for many years under Don Lessner who did what he knew all those years. Cisco had good teams in Jefferson running rip fly T formations, Steve Robb Had success at Milan running power I, Ida, Hudson, Airport with Redmon and Dundee have had success running T and Wing T. Canton, Zeeland West, TC West, Carlson all run T with success. Old school football works period. Airports back to the Wing T, Huron is back to the Wing T, Riverview is back to the T. Works pretty darn well. So please stop selling garbage and filling your young players heads with garbage that old school football doesn't work. Your wrong. Take a closer look at many leagues here in SE Michigan you'll find more and more parity. And one more thing for the arm chair qb's and fair weather fans/alumni. When a job does open put your whistle on, bring your resume to the interview, and actually coach something at the high school level before bad mouthing coaches.
Really great job by Riverview Friday night! They sure was the better team that night! I hope for the best for them the rest of the year!!
We suffered a really big loss to one of our really good players! It was in the last few minutes of the game so it didn't have anything to do with our loss! But a player who'll really be missed this year!
7:29 brought out a very good point about the student section trying to provoke our student section but they didn't react and I was proud of them! I agree the school administers should address that just for future home games!!
It is what it is and Jessie will help Milan get re-loaded! It's hard to replace a great kid like DJ but this team will step up!!
Then why do you read?
FYI, The blog isn't hurting anyone. Quite frankly the blog has helped the overall coverage in the area that was literally awful in 2009 2010. It has forced everyone to get better at their coverage of high school football in this area. The comment section gets a little much at times however; I get a handful of complaints from people a year and literally hundreds of complements including people going out of their way virtually anywhere to say what a great job you're doing for the kids. In fact, I get coaches doing the same thing along with the athletic director's as well.
The blog hurts the kids/coaches and the programs especially when things aren't going well. Just look at SMCC right now and the comments wait til the next few weeks shake out either AP or view or FR will go away and the others will get crucified on here
For real, all the blog now is about coaching this and coaching that.. let's bring back the old blog and talk about the players more in depth
Mr 9:04 never said they were unbeatable. Just said they would go 4-0 in next 4 games.
Would love to hear more on this blog about player matchups, scheme matchups, why a team lost or won, strength and weaknesses of each weeks matchups. Less of coaches, players, a fan base, that suck! Bloggers need to think a little deeper and bring some new material.
Thank you for allowing legitimate concerns. Long term, addressing these concerns might improve the high school football experience.
Coach spiess and his boys are a great addition to hurons program im glad they are here. The comment above about lets see how he does after his boys are gone is rediculous. For one thing football is a team sport for another i coached some of these boys in huron little league as well and this is a great group of boys that have a ton of talent. So with that being said i think the original huron boys need to be showed some respect. Im proud of all if them its been a pleasure watching them grow. No disrespect to coach spiess at all like i said im glad he is here and hope god blesses him and this team
I think I should address that comment. This is nothing like mlive. Mlive had no moderation and didn't have anyone with a name (me) being a voice of reason. There have been a handful of negative comments with some legitimate concerns. I allow them to run their course, but try and lend something to the other side of the argument. If something is too over the top, then I don't allow it.
This has turned into the old mlive garbage forum! No clue what coaches/teams go thru throughout a season, winning or losing ones, step up and coach people or shut up and be a true fan!!!
I would never say ANY team is unbearable. Mr 6:49 think! But just to bring up a point I seen earlier. I was volunteering today up at Huron Jr Cheif club and to add a few communities the club is coaching SMCC think some coaches in the day were from down that way and today saw some of the Woodhaven Purple. And I'm sure I'm missing some. But point being. People are speaking of tight league and I agree. Very tough and like Coach Smith spoke of so proud to see young Men around the area enjoying the high school experience. I can't say enough of what the CHEIFS Jr program has built! Thanks to all of you in the past and those out there now. Coaching tomorrow's Varsity teams. And building a Tribe!
It's not being ungrateful at all.. it's just a statement I threw out there because there are no DB's in the league that can successfully match up against the size and depth of Huron's receivers. But whatever we are doing now is obviously working, so I am proud to be a memeber of the tribe. Go Chiefs
Best coaches :
Reaume at flat rock. Took a job no one wanted. 0-9 , 0-9 before he got there , 3-6, 4-5, this year who knows but better for sure. Probably playoffs.
Mack Riverview: took over a team with tradition , but not much winning the past few yeas. Killed by injuries last year.
Duffy airport: winning but haven't played anyone yet, but huge improvement
Huron coach:spies: we will see how he does without bringing his own players in soon
Congrats to Riverview on a well played, hard hitting affair. If they play the remaining games with that same passion, the league needs to buckle up. It was impressive. I thought their lineman did a fine job, but the running backs flat ran down hill. More importantly, it was a great show of sportsmanship that the Riverview coaches walked across the field to recognize the Milan QB that was being tended too. Very classy move by those coaches.
Unfortunately, their student body didn't follow suit as they ran across the field to the Milan students side to antagonize them. Milan kids just stayed in their stands, but I hope a Riverview administrator will address it.
Anyway – nice win by Riverview and I am sure the Big Reds will be as ready as can be for Jefferson.
SMCC has already played the toughest teams. I see the 6-3 in the playoffs. Jefferson, GI, airport and Huron all winnable games.
Perspective: Milan SMCC riverview and flat rock have all played each other the first 4 weeks of league play. Jefferson airport GI and Huron have all played each other the first 4 weeks of leaguecolay. The next few weeks will seperate the contenders from the pretenders. I will say the first 4 will all finish above the second fir teams.
Riverview finishes with 1 loss 8-1
Flat rock only 1 or 2 losses (Huron is a coin flip). 8-1 or 7-2
Huron loses to riverview (flatrock is a coin flip) 8-1 or 7-2
Milan (Huron coin flip) either 7-2 or 6-3 played Chelsea week 1
Airport, Jefferson, GI, and SMCC all coin flips .
Riverview wins the league due to tie breaker with Milan. I hope flat rock pulls it out.
Don't worry it's not going to happen.
Man i would hate to see what the Huron people would be saying if they lost a game or two. Be happy your undefeated at the moment.
Since when is it coach bashing to simply suggest the coach open the playbook more. Grow up.
Normally I just read the comments and never comment. However 10:49 must not be seeing what some of us are seeing. Coach Spiess does his best to spread the ball around and give everyone opportunity to touch the ball. He has turned the program around and is moving it forward. The TEAM is winning!!! It is great to see the Jr. Chiefs program that I was a part of for so long contributing to the the Chiefs winning season. These young men are outstanding. Go Chiefs!
I actually completely agree with you. In fact, I do sit quietly at games. My kid graduated and was fortunate to play, as was I decades ago. It is frustrating to see players who start because their parents are connected to the coach in some way, when their backup is better and those on the team (not in the stands) know it. It happened to teammates of mine back in the day and still happens today. I'll bet it happened when you were in school or that you have personally seen it as an AD. You probably would correct it if it were happening on one of your teams. At some point though, a school's administration needs to recognize when this is happening and correct it. I get that you didn't want me calling out specific schools because you have to communicate with these specific coaches for this blog. So let this anonymous post apply to those anonymous coaches.
Ask yourself a very important question. Have you heard anyone talking bad in the bleachers regarding coaches? If you have a child, have you ever said anything contradictory to the positive regarding a coach and or another player? You know the answer. Never helps the situation. It is only tearing down the program, that type of stuff is never a program builder.
Successful programs AND programs that consistently fail are due to the coaching staffs and their programs. It is exactly why some teams win year in and out and others do not. Even at higher level, the progam is judged over time and the head coach takes responsibility. Do you really think Belichick or Saban will have back to back losing seasons? For that matter, would Hoskins, Redman or Giarmo have back to back losing seasons? You can say it's the kids for maybe a particular year (last season MSU), but winning programs have coaches that consistently make good decisions.
I the View's players pretty much go both wats
Or maybe they're just not willing to do what it takes to win. Or they just can't accept the fact that they're not good enough. Why does it always have to be about the coaching staff? We go back to the parent credo: a victory, it's the kids fault. Lose and it's the coaches fault.
When a program has a bunch of kids no longer interested in playing (in any sport), there is a problem with the coaching staff. You just didn't like that I mentioned specific programs.
Your not posting that comment because it isn't politically correct; although absolutely true.
Huron needs to pass the ball more ? You are 4-0 ! That is what is sad about high school sports. So many ungrateful people. Coach Spiess is obviously improving the program and the community that the majority of the kids and community are happy to be apart of. Get rid of your individual (your son's) agenda and just be happy that the program in New Boston is having an unforgettable experience. We will be laughing when your coach leaves and Huron goes back to being a basement dweller in the Huron League. Be careful what you wish for…
I heard the same thing last night at the Dundee-Hudson game. They played a great team in Hudson and a small group of individuals did nothing but bash the coaches and curse at the officials with no regards for the young children present. They were the best coaches not on the field last night. They forget that in 2014 they were 0-9 and almost canceled the season.
I applaud all those guys brave enough to devote time to teach these young men and women about the values that you can learn from athletics, I know I sure as hell wouldn't put up with the BS they do!
Well said Chris. It is hard enough sitting in the stands as a parent listen to the know it alls. Try being a coach's wife in the stands. It is brutal!!
Huron needs to pass the ball more. Plain and simple.
I'm not posting that comment.
I will just say this. Every team that struggles has a parent in the stands, that is badmouthing the Coach in front of other parents and in front of the kids at home. You're not helping the situation. Sit there, and tell your child, you love watching them play.
And that is why 11:33 is spot on! Go Chiefs!
Mr 10:49 4-0 is impressive! Our J.V is 4-0 or Freshman team had 1st lost last week, both of ther Jr high seasons undefeated! The Huron Jr football program has supplied the area with talent. I've seen Boys at Airport,Flatrock ,and Romulus,Sumit that played flag and Jr ball at Huron! Great program! Other local communities should follow! Don't tell a 4th grader he's not a football player! Condition him and play him both ways on Saturday and sit back years from now and enjoy great Jr high JV and Varsity Football. Same goes for Huron Jr wrestling clubs.
It's funny that everyone still bashes Airport when nobody from Airport is even commenting. Get a life people!! I'll say this-Jefferson played a good game last night. It's all about match ups. Airport didn't match up well last night. We made a lot of mistakes-didn't play well. With that being said, we played well enough to win. Obviously we all know next week against Riverview will be a tough game. We knew Huron was gonna be a tough game as well.
Payment and Eads were two very very solid players on Friday. Eads is a carryover from last year but I hadn't heard of Payment until his running last night. Hopefully it was him and not a hit on our D
-AP proud jet
Yes 10:06 clearly the JV win loss record matters for the future… Some of you still don't get it
"He's winning games, but not impressively. 10:49 do you realize how dumb your comment is? EM
Fact: Combined record of HL teams AP has beat is 1-7. And Dundee is 2-2 in LCAA. The " Buc" stops w the View!
Blackbeard Jr.
Let's see last night #5 caught long TD pass. #12 threw long TD pass on half back pass to #11. #12 threw 20 yard pass for a first down on fake punt. Not sure but I think #40 might have ran one in. I think he spreads the ball around plenty just needs to throw some more. Maybe on 2nd and short or first down. Put #12,4,11 in pass pattern no one can cover all of them. As for who will have better 4 game record with games remaining between Huron and Airport. That's easy Huron 4-0.
Proud of the "bend don't break D" at AP. Lol. The strategy must be to get outplayed. The game they outplayed opponent, they lose to Huron
Parents drink the Kool Aid no matter how nonsensical.
Not sure that I am all that impressed with Huron's new Coach- Spiess. With as much talent and speed that Huron has, you would think he would move the ball around more? All we see in the stands is 85% or better of all offense is going to the players he brought up from Ohio with him- Cam Hutchins and Brennan Spiess. Starting to get easier figuring out his play calling. He's winning games, but not impressively. Thoughts?
I know SMCC is a little young this year and their QB play is a little slow around the corner but they will be back. No big deal. I think the league is "Finally" finally catching up to them after many gret years.Good to see the rest of the league is finally getting a clue about football. Good luck the rest of the season.
View is going to Airport. Next 3 games are away for this team.
View faithful
SMCC hashtag should be #excuses and #livinginthepast
Also flat rock has been building their program. Their JV beat SMCC on Thursday.
Interesting (to me) that Huron and AP have the same teams left in league play. Who is going to have a better 4 game record?
AP runs out of miracles next week. I don't see them winning another game. At RV. At FR, at CC, Milan and at tecumseh. And their JV has been losing. Doesn't look like a bright future.
7:35 don't be jealous because you can't afford the tab. 0-9, 0-9 and then one good season. You'll be right back where you belong after graduating half your team. 6 starting sophomores out there for CC. Have you seen what you have coming up? I'm sure you weren't on here last year when you lost by 30. That's what kills me. We are missing two all league players on defense and a lot of size because of it. We have a winning tradition because things are done correctly. We wouldn't cry that our QB was out because he did something the coach sees bad enough to sit out in a big game. Enjoy the win
Hey Chris Thomas Eads of Jefferson had an astounding game on defense yesterday, he lead both teams in tackles plus he had an interseption and a forced fumble. Bears might have lost but that kid was the best on the field
You can't blame Kipf for everything, it's ignorant and simply isn't fair. Our line is young and in need of mental strength and physicality that we just simply dont seem to have in abundance this year. Giarmo is gone, Kipf is our coach and this young team doesn't need alumni on this blog posting stuff blaming Kipf and "if we only had Giarmo" crap because it is rude, insulting and isn't going to help toughen them up mentally. It's giving them EXCUSES they simply DO NOT need. If you have issues bothering you that badly, send a signed letter to Chad. Otherwise, be a respectful alumni and keep your comments about our coach to your friends on the side lines while you are reliving your glory days gone by and respect our boys who are impressionable 15-18 year olds who also read this blog.
AP outplayed yet again. Dose of Reality time next week at the View. No miracles next week boys
Go Bucs
SMCC is down right now. It happens. WE all have cycles, even SMCC. They do not have the talent they had a few years back, numbers are way down. Just a sign of the times. Some of the better athletes at SMCC decided to not play football.
Many of their better players are 10th graders. There is no magic that makes you great every year, look back on Jacks first years, his record was worse than the current staff. The current staff would do great with the talent Jack had. Jack currently has a D1 QB, great talent helps make a great coach.
Enrollment is lowest in years, football is on the decline, take your lumps and deal with some bad years like the rest of us have.
BEAR vs FALCON game ought to be a good one. Battle of the basement.
Smcc's best Quarterback is playing at the JV level. He can throw and has some size, but takes a beating each week. Our lineman can't pass block a tackling dummy. The problem with SMCC is systemic, And infects the entire program. Our coaching staff's refusal to adapt and evolve as the game of football changes Is baffling. Anything which does not adapt and grow, ultimately becomes stale and dies. Which is what is happening to SMCC's proud football tradition.
Once again SMCC is done in by a predictable stale game plan. CC scores on the first drive of the game against a very good Flat Rock team, then we get out coached the rest of the night. Good coaches adjust, we NEVER change anything offensively. The one change we did make was our defensive scheme the week after a huge win against Pewamo. That genius plan yielded 75 points in 2 games. Something needs to change and change in a hurry. Losing is a part of the game, but when the team is unprepared and we get out coached every single week that is unacceptable. CC has athletes and some very good football players who will play at the next level, but we seem to be stuck with a coaching staff unprepared to coach at the Varsity level.
To be fair. He attempted a pass in the first half and it was picked off. They also ran the keep and it got stuffed. Loss of yardage.
Here is the problem with smcc, I gaurentee you they do not have the same lifting and conditioning that they had under giarmo. I'm a former falcon and I don't see the passion, pride or effort. The line has good size and thickness but doesn't fire off or move anyone on a constant basis. They have a drive here and there where they olownyou over but they can't sustain it it fades " no 4th quarter strength" my other issue with them is the rbs try to dance and bounce to much, when I was there the rbs were taught to look for contact and engage the defense " add to the physical game and break down the defense the 3 rbs I saw last night wanted to finesse around in the holes and lanes and were getting hit instead of hitting back. The T is old school and needs to have old school toughness to be successful; this team is a soft team playing a physical offense and it's gonna be a long long long season. My biggest issue is when do they pull the trigger on kipf 8-2 (0-1) playoffs then 4-5 and now this season I see them 3-6 at best maybe even 1-8 bc they have no endurance and gas and fade in games and season. Can't argue that kipf has declined the program, maybe not directly but it's happened. My other issue with kipf was this, only 1 pass attempt, I didn't see any qb keepers, the entire game was trap power, I ubdersnd the T is trap and power based. As I said I'm alumni of smcc but to have never ran a true toss, no qb keeps (that's usually a home run play) everyone falls asleep crashing the middle and to never return to the pass game was terrible cosching on offense, all it takes is one good connection and flat rock would have back off openig lanes to run. For as long as he's been in the program he failed thenprogram last night.
Did someone say the qb had nothing to do with flat rock moving the ball? They run the read option 1/2 the time. Does he realize the qb makes every decision on the read option on wether to give it or keep it. Flat rock easily had over 200 yards in the 2nd half. They maybe had 50 in the first if they were lucky. They boosters wallets at SMCC must be running dry when they can buy kids. Enjoy your 3-6 season.
The critics are out Gary. Pretty tough to respond when people don't give a name, but I will say this: I said after the scrimmage that I was "Not overly impressed with the team speed, they don't seem to have any burners." The word SEEM is the key word here. I had just watched a scrimmage and quite frankly you couldn't really tell. However; I have changed my stance on that and I have made that clear on the blog since. Since your a critic and didn't add a name, I'll let you figure out when and/or where I said that. It's there, let's see if you "QUICK" enough to find it.
10:43 couldn't have been at the game or just doesnt know football. QB didn't make a difference and didn't move the ball for FR any different than the other kid. I hate when people chime in and don't respect the game. Without the bad calls FR is lucky to be in that game. Two point conversion was good. Terrible spots and refs should be ashamed of the jobs they did. 4th down conversion by CC was at least 2 yards good. If you listen to the radio call they even say that's a first down and he's in for the 2 point conversion. It was bad and I bet Gary can add to it because he was there. It's a shame a good game had to have that in it. Even a fumble that was recovered by the defense and not called. Just a shame it was called like that. Two even teams playing hard.
Milan finally had to travel for the first time all year and Riverview exposed and absolutely molly whooped them. Could t be happier for the view. Congrats guys
Chris flat rocks speed??? I thought they lacked burners??!!? Please. And Gary we should be happy with our 2 point win? We fumbled inside the 5 and missed our starting QB for the first half. That shoulda been a 3 TD win. I'd suggest you be happy with your 2 point loss….
No offense to Coach Kiph who is a great man but will there be a change in leadership at SMCC? I can't imagine the Falcon faithful being too accepting of a losing record. Maybe the young Falcons will turn it around.
The league is setting up for a showdown with Huron and Flat Rock !
Look to the left on my twitter feed, a half eaten cheeseburger!
Let's just say this was one of the most physical games I have ever seen in the Huron League. Riverview brought it hard! Milan competed, but at halftime I knew who was going to win this game. There was a point during the 3rd quarter during an injury timeout that the Milan kids just seemed winded. It's not a knock against them, it was literally the Pirates battering ram. They just kept pounding. This was definitely not the same team I saw against Flat Rock two weeks ago. Of course FR's speed gave Riverview fits. I was very impressed with Milan's QB, unfortunately he got hurt late in the game and it didn't look good. I hope he is okay. Milan has a solid line, Aeshbacker and Hines are as advertised but Riverview was something. I really can't say enough about the job they did tonight. The line was fantastic and the backs (Guthrie/Rogers) used speed, agility and power to gain yardage. Riverview's Dominic Woods was impressive as well. All in all, a great hard fought game. I'm glad I went. The double cheeseburger wasn't too bad either.
Let's get to the important stuff: Chris, (and I know Coach Tom above briefly referenced it) you were at Riverview tonight, how were the concessions?
Not sure how Airport almost beat Huron. Looked very mediocre tonight. Guess its all about the matchups. Jefferson had their number most of the night. Without the long return for a TD, they could have been down by 2 TD's. Airport made a lot of mistakes, but Jefferson was unable to capitalize. Very lucky kick at the end, snap was botched, barely got it down.
Airport definitely better than last year, but they aren't the JV Huron league champs we have been hearing about for 2 years, Varsity is a different animal.
AP was lucky lots of bad things on offense and defense better shore up second week in a row mis snaps, fumbles that were recovered by AP guys that will not be good against superior teams. Certainly could have gone other way keep this up and lose next 3
Go Rams. That catch by Harbin….
Flat Rock played hard and had a nice comeback. Falcons played well too. Great crowd to see game and game turned on a defensive stop by Rams on 4th down deep in Central territory. Hard hitting great game and dynamic rushing by Rams backs.
Word is several player got dinged up for Milan. Chris can elaborate more on the physicality of Riverview. Hottest team in the league right now. Things can change quickly however. The HL is very good.
Milan, Riverview, and/or Flat Rock.
Wasn't able to make it to the 'View tonight for the game. Congrats to the Pirates.
I am wondering who got dinged up for the Big Reds. Taking nothing away from Riverview, who I'm sure was the better team on the field tonight, but more of a question for the future going forward. Injuries are a nightmare for any team, but with a roster this small in numbers, any absences are magnified.
Hope you had one of those double cheeses for me, Chris!
HURON 4-0 what 2 will they lose?
Sage Daniels was the difference. Harbin had a nice game as well.
Anyone who has watched flat rock know the offense goes through the qb. Flat rock struggled just to get the ball snapped to the qb when he was out. If he plays the first half they score at least once. The fumble on the 5 is another td. Therefore 14 points.CC had a great opening drive then not much after that.
Great job tonight Pirates. A dominating performance. This was the most physical game this year. On both sides of the ball, Riverview won the battle on the line of scrimmage. Riverview picked off a pass in the endzone early in the 3rd qtr and spent the rest of quarter eating up the clock with a long drive featuring a great QB keep for a first down. Milan showed some life in the 4th, but it was too much to overcome. A couple of key players for Milan got injured and they finished the game on offense by letting the clock run out. I hope their players are okay, but I never saw that before. Huron League is wide open, and the Bucs are right in the thick of it.
Flat rock fumbled on the 5. And moved the ball at will once the qb came back in.
Well said Gary. Tired of people not giving credit. Especially after some of the close calls that didn't help out CC. Be excited with the first win in 15 years and move on to next week. CC is only going to get better and remember we played a senior laden team. Tough loss but played with heart.
And yes. Riverview is a monster right now. WOW! Not sure how FR beat them. Great win on their part.
Not sure what game you were watching but SMCC/Flat Rock was very evenly matched. Yes Dotson sat first half. Must have been something disciplinary. Rock scored on a long run and a tipped pass in the end zone, defended well by SMCC. Include a missed 2 point conversion by an inch. I'd be happy with your 2 point win.
Flat rock qb sat first half. Flat should have won by 2 td. Riverview has the best line in the league and they won't lose again. I still have no idea how flat rock matched their physicality. Huron can not match them upfront.
Great job tonight FR! First win against the Falcons in 15 years.
The d and o coordinators make the difference these guys have won us 3 nail biters this year great down the stretch on play calling on offense and the Ben don't break defense again comes thru
Go jets 3-1 building champions
Riverview looked great tonight. Very physical.
Hats off to Jeska for getting the snap together for Trout to nail the game winner!! Wow!!!
I've been saying it for weeks-Huron League Champion will have 2 losses. The league is very balanced. Can't take a week off. Airport almost loses to Jefferson. Huron and GI tied at halftime. SMCC and Flat Rock was tight as well.
Tremendous game at Jefferson tonight. One of the more exciting football games I have seen in awhile. Jefferson rose up and played very good defense. Had some chances slip away, could have got the way. Airport played well, but not world beaters, got to improve their defense.
Great game. Hopefully a boost for Jefferson, even though we lost.
GO BEARS !!
The only thing going on with the big reds is they got beat by a very underestimated Riverview team.
