SMCC 2017 Preview and Prediction

SMCC is coming off a disappointing 2016 missing the playoffs for only the 2nd time since 2002. Back at the helm is 3rd year head coach Adam Kipf (12-7).  SMCC returns 15 letter winners including 5 starters on offense and 5 on defense.

Offensively out of their patented Full House T, the Falcons will feature a stable of backs lead by Collin Woolford and Nick Marino.  Josh Blanchett will be behind center. Opening up the holes up front will be Jared Fleck, Bryce Iott and Briggs Hehl.

On the defensive side of the ball the Falcons will rely on Toby Huber, John Ritchie and Sam Cousino to provide the big hits. Woolford will also bring the wood from the safety spot.

Coach’s Outlook: “The Huron League appears to be more even than it has in a long time.  Many quality teams this year with no easy wins for anyone.  I think the key to winning the league is going to be depth and who can stay healthy.  Many teams are struggling with numbers, SMCC (us) included.  Milan, Huron and Riverview look to be near the top this year”.

The Falcons are looking to get back on track in 2017 and reclaim the Huron League crown.  Standing in their way is a tough schedule with defending state champs Pewamo-Westphalia in the opener and road trips to Milan, Flat Rock, Huron and ND Prep.  SMCC needs to come out of their first 5 games with a record of 2-3.  Anything worse and their playoff hopes are in serious trouble.  Crazy to think but 0-5 is a possibility.  Coach kipf will lean on his seniors to avoid such a start.

Gary’s Pick: Huron 4-3 Overall 4-5

  1. Gary, I've got to take that win away from GI. While I was just teasing, they were mean spirited. In fact, let's take two wins away and send one of them to Jefferson.

  2. I have a bad feeling about this year ??? I know we haven't played a game yet .. but just the kids that didn't come out and are already hurt , and I know that's the way it goes for any team… but not feeling as optimistic as I once was …things do happen for a reason though !!! So let's see what happens ?????

  3. Kipf wasn't one to make adjustments last season so I don't expect it. Speaking of adjustments, the blog has been making post post adjustments, with some posts just disappearing. Here is one that is still needed. Gary has too many wins (total) for his Huron league predictions. There should be a total of 28 wins and his total is 29. Maybe he is padding his predictions.

  4. Got some pieces to have a really good oline … some kids will have to play out of position…see if Kipf will do it ????
