Friday Night Victors Thoughts and Questions

It doesn’t matter if you never lead during the game as long as you lead at the end.

Should we even bother covering Bedford?

Huge win at Woodhaven for Carlson.

I don’t think you’ll meet a nicer guy than Dundee’s Kyle McElvany.

I think we jumped the gun on Erie Mason a bit.

Is Flat Rock for real?

Is Grosse Ile in rebuilding mode or is Almont that good.

The first half of football by Huron was some of the worst football I have seen there in a long time.

The second half of football by Huron was some of the best football I have seen there in a long time.

It appears Ida still has some football players.

Am I still off base on Jefferson?

I think Milan will rebound, but maybe not this week.

Monroe? I’m not even sure what to say.

That is  probably SMCC’s biggest win since November 28, 2014.

I think Riverview is for real.

Maybe Gary and I should stop picking games. Apparently were not very good at it.

  1. Actually that isn't true about Saline splitting up to play Tecumseh's JV. Tecumseh's JV played Airport that very same night. Also, their was a kid from Carleton who open enrolled to Saline and started on the Saline's JV. He said on the Sunday after at church, that he surprised how good Huron was. He was asked if everyone was there or if they took some players up. He said no, that was our regular line up.

  2. I like how Huron League fans particularly SMCC and Huron fans are saying how great of a win it is for Huron over Salem. What has Salem ever done in football. They may be a 2-7 team this season. Good win over a sub par highschool football team and program but it doesn't mean they can play in the SEC. The size you all saw against Huron is basically D1 football in the state. The teams that win have the speed to go along with it.

  3. That JV Huron team that beat the "JV Saline Team" a few years back played half a Saline JV team. Coach Polka from Saline decided to split his sophomores and have half play new Boston and Half play Tecumseh. #Fact

  4. Would love to start seeing cc play teams like Dundee, Ida, Monroe, or even a little reunion with Gianni and Carlson

  5. SMCC and Monroe compete for kids. They will not play often. Whoever wins, it will hurt the losing school even more. Kids in town have a tough decision and sports can sometimes sway that decision. Right now academics are becoming increasingly important and Monroe has a lot to offer.

  6. I think in all fairness CAL preps says you can't trust that data just yet. If you run the data from the 2016 seasons you can get an idea of where teams would Of ended up head to head. Too tough to tell something from just one game because there's no, common opponents and mathematics simply doesn't work this early. Like where your head is at though.

  7. Won't post Cal Preps data on 2017 Monroe vs 2017 Huron league teams, but will post other speculation/ opinions???

  8. No one will win these debates.Lets quit writing books about the past. Who cares? We have some great games coming up this week. – whats next? focus

  9. The point about Monroe is with such a big school, they seem to really never have a great season and go deep into the playoffs…never , never consistently !!! And stop blaming the league you play in ..either you have the tradition , the kids , the coaches, the parents, and the community or you don't !!!! Monroe isn't known for a football power, I'm going to say even in the future you won't…but I hope you will …people love to compare SMCC and Monroe every year, I certainly believe there are teams that SMCC has had that would beat Monroe, just like Monroe has teams that would definitely beat SMCC…but a D1 team getting beaten by a D7 team should never ever happen… if they do I'm telling you it's because of a traditional power and that D1 team or school that isn't known for football , which is Monroe!!! Don't let the truth make you mad , SMCC and Monroe will never play a varsity football game , Monroe has everything to lose , absolutely would be embarrassing to get beat by SMCC… SMCC has everything to gain !!! Monroe just support your kids and coaches, and once again your not a traditional football power in the state of Michigan like SMCC is !!!! Now let's hear some feedback….

  10. In 2015 the Huron JV had an opening on there schedule late in the season and the AD got a game with Saline. To that point Saline JV was undefeated and most there games weren't even close. I was at that game and heard parents on Saline talking about how this game would be over by halftime. They were right we smoked them and could of hung 60 on the board if we wanted. Match ups on paper are one thing, what goes on during game day is another. Just saying

  11. The top teams in the HL would compete fairly well in the SEC.

They would get slaughtered by Saline and Bedford would pound most HL teams but other than those 2, I don't see any world beaters in the SEC.

Those would be 1 game scenarios. If the smaller HL teams had to play the big boys in the SEC every week, it would be very wearing. The bigger schools just have much more depth.

The last time CC and Monroe played was in 2012. CC won the freshman game and Monroe won the JV.

  12. SMCC fan obviously you guys every year we can beat Monroe……schedule the game 2-3 year contract Heck MHS would probably play at Navarre all 3 years have the AD call the AD at Monroe get it done big boy Monroe has to travel to Elkhar Indiana let's stay here and get this game done

  13. Chris and Gary all you have to do is go back to the playoffs when Allen Park was beating everyone. Look what AP did to Monroe year after year.. then look when AP played against the Huron league on those years.. Monroe would lose 3 to 4 games a year in the Huron league!! Monroe Alum.

  14. Monroe won't be 7-3 or 7-4. I'm not saying Bedford would be in the bottom half of the Huron league; I'm saying Monroe would. Huron, Milan, SMCC and Riverview would all beat Monroe THIS year. Being in the SEC doesn't automatically mean a bad team in the division is better than good teams in a smaller division. Huron just beat Salem; Chris points out other Huron league wins supporting my point. Add some SMCC wins over Bedford. I'm not suggesting the top of the SEC loses to the top of the Huron league; I'm suggesting Monroe THIS year loses to four solid Huron league teams. Let's check Cal Preps theoretical games at the end of the season.

  15. The Huron League performed extremely well this past Friday. I think this league overall top to bottom is the best it's been in some time

  16. I agree regarding the SEC Red and the Huron League, but look no further than 2011 when 4-5 Jefferson beat Bedford in week 9. Bedford was 7-4 that season with a playoff victory over Brighton that year. Also, in 2009 Bedford finished 7-3 yet lost the season opener to Airport. Just saying.

  17. Monroe bottom half of league of HL that is just plain nonsense you HL fans need to see SEC teams play strength speed, size much more talent and Monroe has more than any HL team they may not measure up to the SEC talent but would dominate HL teams over course of year. Airport coaching is the difference they are Allin and Duffy family gets it they deserve their moment but better shore up some things Dundee is average (they will win 6 games but it's LCCA FB) at best . Flat rock is for real FR fans enjoy Huron and view will be 1-2 in HL Fr Milan 3-4 APSmcc 5-6 bottom Jeff gi

  18. #5 and #7 stood out for Salem and while the linemen were big they were slow and were gassed in the 2nd half as Huron was in there backfield often. The coach was way to conservative in first half with play calling and once they starting spreading the field in second half they moved the ball. Also a lot of confusion at times about where to line up on offense which with totally new scheme is expected. Big win for Huron and I think this team will get better as season moves along.

  19. Yes GI is in rebuilding mode. last year They had a great group of seniors that played together for a lot of years led to their successs. In 2014 when Smcc won a state title same thing. This year at Flat Rock same thing. It is a great thing to have a lot of veterans on your team that have each others backs so all you do is enjoy the victories while you can. As long as it last. Good luck to all teams in week 2.

  20. The earlier poster must have meant you didn't talk about AP JV football. If you keep Monroe, keep Bedford. I think the league rivalries are what makes the blog fun. Maybe pick up Trenton and Woodhaven to enhance your coverage of Carlson who might start off 5-0. Flat Rock is for real and those that talked about kicking them out of the league are now confirmed to be stupid. Milan and Jefferson just played very good programs in Chelsea and Ida. Milan will be in the top tier at the end of the season. Jefferson will win at least two Huron league games; one of which will be GI, who might not win a game this season. SMCC @ Milan should be the game of the week. Huron has three games to figure out who amoung their 100 players should play where before they play a top half team. Riverview could be a second thorn in Milan's side. Erie Mason lost to a Summerfield program that has been to the playoffs 7 of the past 9 years; don't give up on them yet. Monroe would be in the bottom half of the Huron or Downriver league. No one could have picked this past weekend's games.

  21. While Huron did play poor in the first half, Salem has far more size and talent than any team in the Huron League & Huron took over the second half and dominated scoring 28 straight points. Huron's win was impressive.

  22. Riverview has some powerful backs that may be tough to stop this year with a fast QB as well. I expect that we will hear their names and numbers a lot this year, but I was really impressed with how quick and tough the Oline got off the ball. Dively, Demare, Lezotte, Pruitt, Maher, Kincaid, and Sarnacki owned the los the entire night. Romulus was not ready for the second year of the View T. Defensively, RV gave up too many points, but I don't think they will face another playmaker like #6 from Romulus. Very classy move to take a knee at the end of the game on the 1 yd line. Hopefully the new weight room contributes to an injury free year and a very competitive run in the HL. Go Bucs!

  23. Is flat rock for real? Of course they are! Return 18 starters, have some of their biggest numbers in years and just beat up on a Class A Garden City squad that has 2 D-1 players on it!! Like what more do you want to start the season?
