  1. Problem with the spread is you WILL run into someone in the playoffs that is more athletic then you and they will shut it down. T, double wing or option gives teams not as athletic a chance. Huron against orchard lake. Milan the last couple years have been very athletic for our league but couldn't get past more athletic teams like Melvin dale and country day. Gi as well. It works in our league because we don't see teams full of athletes. A couple on each team. If we did you'd see more going on to college.

  2. I have a few friends that are part of the Huron program and they told me they were after a current Huron League coach that has experience running the spread. They asked him to apply but he couldn't do it this year. I'm curious to see if they asked him again or move on. Either way I hope they dont change their mind about the spread and go with the T like the rest of the league seems to be doing.

  3. Has anyone heard who is going to be apart of Coach Duffy's staff? Are members of the SMCC staff going to Airport with him or previous Airport alums ?

    1. They have hired a strength and conditioning coach. NSCA-CPT and NETA certified. Also; an Airport graduate from 2008.

  4. Airport Fan here…. The Duffy family has always been a huge part of Airport Athletics, maybe Anderson does not get the Melvindale job and we take them both. Great hire, he will do well and have the community support but having said that, the expectations will probably be higher for him as coach. There will be little room for error before people turn on him also. Hope he gets his chance and we all stand with him and the program. Trust the Process.

  5. Jim Duffey was an smcc assistant the year they won the state title. He is a very good coach and I think he will be able to really turn the offense around. Airport should be a scary team this coming season

  6. Duffy has been a valuable member of Jack Giarmo's staff at SMCC for 5 or 6 years. He was normally assigned in the press box on game nights. He was also an assistant varsity baseball coach at SMCC for the past 3 or 4 years. Part of deep playoff runs in both sports. Plenty of good coaching experience. Also agree Anderson is going to have plenty of good talent to work with at Melvindale.

  7. Not sure about it being a better football job truthfully. It's just a totally different job in my opinion. Not sure you could say better or worse just because of the urban to rural comparison. Similar size schools but school and overall quality of education and environment from top to bottom just make them polar opposites.

Two district titles in school history for Melvindale. Under Redmon, Airport has the better football history. I think both are good jobs, but the Melvindale job takes a special type of coach to make it work. It's not Allan Park or Wyndotte. A number of difficult challenges come with that job. Having the coach in the building and some great assistants are a priority for success.

  8. It don't matter that his brother is the AD. The AD doesnt even make the final decision. Jack Giarmo personally emailed Airport and said Jim Duffy was a big part of their state championship. im not worried

  9. Brother wasn't even part of the process. But the conflict of interest will be there with certain people. Has been coaching as long as Derek and has been with smcc varsity along with coaching Jv. Big part of the the play calling during their state championship run. Also coaching with Jack he was always being coached on being prepared to be a varsity coach someday.

  10. With the job coming down to him and Derek Anderson, it makes you wonder considering Anderson has way more experience coaching and I don't think Duffy has any varsity experience at the HS level.

    1. I hate when people say a person has no experience; how do you get experience with out the opportunity. You have to start somewhere. If he has the passion and some knowledge he will do well.

  11. Sounds like a conflict of interest to me. But good luck to him, hopefully the program gets better support than it has been getting. GO JETS!!
