To this outsider, coaching appears to be the *only* reason Airport fans have been vocal. I hope the next coach at Airport isn't made to be the scape goat when the going gets tough.

That said, I think that some of your thoughts are in conflict with each other.
I've read so many posts on this blog about the predictability of Milan's play calling, often from parents and fans of teams that Milan just beat. No one complains when Nick Humphrey runs the ball 30 times in a game, especially when Jefferson wins. A few years back, Rob Kanitz would hammer defenses with QB keepers. A few more years back, Ron Spears' home run play was running it right up the gut. There weren't many complaints about that when it worked. When Spears' Milan team played DCD in the playoffs and that play wasn't there, Milan didn't have much success with the rest of their playbook. Teams who have found a way to exploit the defense will hammer away at that weak spot. I guarantee coaches will seldom mind being called predictable or boring after a win. If you argue that Milan's offense was limited or was limiting itself, that might be all the more reason why that coaching staff deserves credit for the jobs they've done this season.
You advocate for calling two plays at a time. This means you want to go back to huddling, right? The check with me opens up Milan's entire playbook on each snap to counter the defense's look. You could stick with what has been working, regardless of the defense's look, or you could dial up something to specifically counter what the defense is showing. It's the coach's call.
To me, the no huddle check with me gives an offensive coach maximum flexibility. Sure, coaches have to call the right plays and players have to execute, but why limit yourself?
I may be proven wrong, but I thought that the number of times the offense did a check with me was down this season. I also disagree with the thought that the check with me takes a team out of its rhythm. The team's just getting the play call at the line instead of in a huddle. If you want the offense to go high-tempo no-huddle, I'll hear you out, but that's tough with so many players playing on both sides of the ball. You want to exhaust your opponent, not yourself.
Also, for what it's worth, it also looked like the team didn't try to get the defense to jump as much with a hard count like they have done in the past. Perhaps this wasn't working in practice, but that's just speculation on my part.
I choose to believe that the coaches call plays based on the scouting of their opponent and the scouting of their own team. Coaches know what their teams can do well and what their teams struggle to execute. Because the team lost, they're going to get second guessed. I know the coaches can handle it.
It's just that this issue of criticizing the program on style points doesn't seem to go away with some Milan fans. That's what rubs me the wrong way. Thanks for hearing me out.
Reading into you point, coaching has much to do with the game outcome; thus the reason Airport fans a have been vocal.
AS a Milan supporter, Milan has had a consistently successful football team, and Coach Hoskins has continued that while working hard at making a "culture change" from when he took over. This years team lost 22 of 28 kids from the 2015 team with only #6 and #9 being full time starters. The vast majority of this years team came from a 1-8 JV team but they also had a number of STARTERS that played football for the first time this year. To think that this team was going to go 9-2, win the Huron League and get to a district final…..no one could have predicted this season, and the coming 2017 season will be similar – although there a few younger kids who will be coming back with some experience. More importantly, I know that AD is more concerned with the other stuff that is going on within that program – sportsmanship, strong students, accountability, respect and commitment. The AD has frequently shared with the coaches that their jobs are not on the line because of wins and losses.
And, whomever started the rumor that Coach Hoskins is stepping down – perhaps that should talk to someone that actually knows the answer to the question. Starting rumors like that is disrespectful to Coach Hoskins, his staff and to the kids/parents associated with the program who may read this blog.
As a long distance fan, I have only been able to watch Milan on film a couple of times the past two seasons. They have an outstanding OC. Their QB and TB are dynamic HS running backs, they maximized their skills with their power & QB counter running game. Of course they would want balance, but good coaches get the ball in their best players hands and that's what they did… that's playing to win.
I hope Coach Hoskins and his staff stay and continue to win football games!
Coach Tom 'play not to lose mentality' im just referring to being predictable on play calling. Like check with me we all know they are going to do it every play..destroys rhythm. Call two plays at a time. Being to comfortable with what works and not necessary what a team is giving you. Open the play book. Thanks for not being judgmental.

You can't be serious here.
But I do think you are right in some instances, some parents send their kids to CC in hopes of winning. And there is nothing wrong with it. However I would say about 90% of the students at SMCC are from St. John, St. Mary, St. Michael, St. Charles, St. Pats and-or played in the CYO. Keep in mind, its not all about sports when parents decide to send their kids there.
With school of choice there are several options for parents. And that's a great thing.
You do know that Redmond won more HL titles than Giarmo, correct?
It's not like Giarmo and SMCC owned the HL.
SMCC did well in the playoffs because they faced D3-D4 teams all year long. By playoff time they were battle tested and for the most part the D6 schools they faced weren't as good as the HL teams.
Nice Job Airport. That's great that the pressure from certain families has caused your coach to step down. I'm sure all of your kids will be in the NFL now.
I will bet you that wherever Giarmo goes. He will NOT have the same success as he did at SMCC. Everybody just thinks adding a good coach to a program is like magic. You have to have a good feeder program and smart, athletic kids. SMCC is an all star team in every sport. All the best kids from each public school district in our area enroll at SMCC because they do not think their local public school is good enough. I do understand many that go their are 2nd and 3rd gen also, but the new ones are all stars from jefferson, airport, ida, Bedford, etc. Always much easier to coach kids that are devoted, very athletic and way ahead of the rest.
SMCC does not always win. But they win a lot more than the rest of us and its not just because of super coaching.
You can add Montague, which would make 7 out of the last 8 state titles won by a small country school in D6. Also a small country school(Clinton) beat SMCC last year in the pre-district matchup.
Winning anything in the playoffs is never easy.
I know a lot of people in Monroe may have never gotten out of Monroe and live in a bubble. And that's ok.. but if you were to watch other programs from other states, you would completely laugh at all the gruff SMCC gets about recruiting and whatever other excuse others like to make. lower division.. private.. blah blah.
SMCC was great because they had a great coach and have had for about 40 plus years. 2 hall of famers to be exact.
Wherever Giarmo goes, that program will skyrocket in wins. It wont be because they are private, it wont be because they are in a lower division, it will be because they will execute better than nearly everyone else.
I doubt anyone would bet against that. I know Chris wouldn't and either would I.

You do know that a small country school(Ishpeming) has won 3 out of the last 4, D7 state titles.

11:38, I am a big fan of the screen game. I like middle screens, too, but sometimes your personnel doesn't allow for you to run certain plays. Barnes is a dynamite runner, and he has underrated arm strength, but his size makes it a challenge to throw the ball in the center third of the field. Which brings me to…
10:04. I'd like to hear more about Milan's "play not to lose mentality". I'm going to reserve judgement for the moment until I hear more about what you mean and what you've seen out of Milan since Hoskins took charge. As for wanting a non-traditional coach, good luck with that. There are still fans in the stands who are uncomfortable with Milan running anything other than the I-formation. I still hear a few folks in the stands groan whenever the team does a "check with me" with the sideline for a different play call. If you want a real rebel to come to town with a new way of doing things, I hope you are willing and able to do a lot of gladhanding with parents and boosters for that coaching staff. Don't forget that Hoskins' first season was no picnic.

Adrian did a great job of dominating the interior line. They penetrated and and took away Barne's running lanes. Would've loved to see Milan adjust to that and run some middle screens. Also, Milan's middle linebackers weren't taking deep enough drops on passing plays, giving Adrian a lot of slant plays. A few outside contain issues on Milan as well. Seems like Milan was a victim of so many HL teams playing in the box and not adjusting to a mainly passing team.

I guess all posts dont make to it to the blog; i posted that Milan has only won 3 districts, and only been to regional twice.. But 1:05 has a good point..Milan has been decent in league play and just doesnt have the caliber program to consistently win districts like smcc. They have conservative minded coaches…play not to lose mentality. If Hoskins is leaving they need to give a nontraditional coach an opportunity. And if you want to be that regional consistency team you have to come out the box.
If SMCC played division 3-4 or Class B back in they day, they would have about the same amount of distric titles . No state championships, that's for sure. It's easy for a private school to beat those small country schools in D6.
As a jet fan, I hope every parent that talked smack about Baas (or any parent in general who runs their mouth) reads this. The guy just had a baby this summer. He (and his staff) worked their butts off beginning w passing league in July. These hs coaches make peanuts and wrk their tails off not only trying to coach your kids but also make them better men. To come on here and trash a guy who probably isn't even 30 years old is disgusting. Most of the posts were from anonymous parents more than likely. Parents who claim they know more because they "watch film". Really? It was an insult to those AP coaches and the sacrifices made. Maybe it's time to take a look at your own son's who get beat in the trenches by tougher teams vs placing blame on a coaching staff that included a D1 football player. Chad coached my son and he is a solid coach and mentor (and teacher at AP) to those kids. I'm not surprised that he decided it wasn't worth the pennies they get paid to deal w the constant whining. They have a good group coming back but missing time w a young baby and wife wouldn't be worth it to me either. Just know when you're yelling like an idiot in the stands at the coach, you might want to re-evaluate yourself as a man (or woman) and what Hs football is really all about.

Great season Milan! I hope the parents were wrong in the stands who said that Coach H was stepping down after this year. My nephews loved playing for Coach Hoskins. I hope Milan can find a way to hold on to him for a long time.

Best of luck to Airport in their coaching search. Last night at the game, the names from the rumor mill that were mentioned for the Jets was former Big Red Steve Robb, former Carlson head man Kent Sikora, Dundee coach Macelvaney, and Ryan Irwin who is a former coach who teaches at Airport.
The Huron League is shaping up to be an exciting year next season! SMCC and Riverview will be much better, Jefferson and Flat Rock are going to be contenders and playoff worthy, and GI and Milan will be back in the fight for the title. Thank you coaches and players for such an exciting year of football!

Adrian is solid. I think they give rouge a game.
I hope they beat them. Adrian really does not have a very good running game. But the little swing passes and slants work very well for them. It was a tough loss for Milan, we definitely did not play our best game. Adrian came prepared and was mistake free. Good luck to them in the Regional game. I'm pulling for them.

I was certain that Milan would be prepared because you said they would be. Adrian is just a better team at this point in the season. Funny how Milan's two loses came to a 5-4 and 4-5 team. They are a decent football team, but really nothing special.
Well, that's unfortunate. It really is. Now before you ALL jump me, just hear me out. Milan has had tremendous teams over the past couple of years. They have had plenty of talent and a lot of great kids. The only thing I'm saying is that there were quite a few of you who gave SMCC a hard time for not repeating their playoff run the year after their State Championship. It's very difficult to repeat past success. Kids come and go, talent isn't always the same, and team chemistries are all factors that you have to deal with. I was just glad that a few more HL teams are getting a little taste of success. The MHSAA football playoffs are something that everyone should experience at least once in their lifetimes. My family and I thoroughly enjoyed the 2014 SMCC season. It was a nice surprise. But after experiencing the top, it's very hard to accept going home early. Basically, what I'm saying is enjoy the ride. No matter how far you go. Take pride in your team, your school or Alma Mater, and most of all, take pride in your kids. Congrats to all.

Also, I thought Milan would win this one. What surprises me is that Milan was shut out in the second half.
Adrian is very good in the trenches. They proved that against GI and now Milan.
And to think I was gonna comment on the game preview earlier this week saying "what needs to be said? We already know how it's gonna play out" .. good thing tho, because it definitely didn't play out like I thought it would. Good run Milan; heads up. You made a good run into the post. Hit them weights and work harder and trainer harder, and come back next year ready to knock someone on their rear.

Great job Milan getting this far and being the only HL team left standing this week. A lot of young players grew up this year. Future is bright for Milan!
Would like to send a thank you out to #6 and #9 for Milan and all the excitement they've brought to the Milan community during their careers. They'll have some great stories to tell their children some day, as well as all the HL seniors this year.

9:06, that's a great observation about the line play. I don't think Milan had a single sack tonight. Milan might have been dropping 7 or 8 in coverage, but regardless you can't give a passing team that much time.

Wow…was looking forward to fellow HL team to seek revenge for the Red Devils, and advance in the playoffs. Amazing how much improved the Adrian O&D line is in just a few games this season.

Adrian scores again, they now lead 28 to 13 with 5:38 to go. The key play of the drive was Adrian converting a third and 16.

After Milan turns it over on downs, Adrian quickly takes advantage of broken coverage connecting on a 70-yard touchdown pass. Milan has the ball back and is driving, but just doesn't look as effective as they were in the first half.
