  1. Getting dirty wasn't the issue…lol pretty sure it was standing water that made it dangerous to play!!!! I mean if we were playing water polo we would have had the perfect field !! Lol

  2. FWIW, I always enjoy Jefferson's popcorn.

I've also coached a couple of the Bears regulars in rec league baseball a few years back, so I've enjoyed keeping tabs on those guys and their accomplishments. Other than that, I guess I'll quote Thumper the Rabbit and say "If you can't say something nice, don't say nothing at all."

By all means, though, don't let me stop the woofing. It's the playoffs and I love the passion folks have for their playoff teams!

    1. Brilliant, however, I didn't win the cup. The Red Devil football team did. They have the playoffs to worry about, but thanks for the concern. The Red Devils will worry about that game next year. Enjoy basketball season! LOL

  3. You Milan folk open yourselves up for the rebuttals. #9 says we are the favorites. Really! No kidding I think everyone knows that. Go ahead try and stop 9 because we have other weapons. Well it didn't help against cc. We have a great defense how come no one is giving us credit. Geez you won the league. What more do you want people to say. You have the best popcorn also, the best coach, the best uniforms, your desire to hear people tell you you are great is what brings out these causes for debates. You really aren't hearing much from GI, maybe that's why Gary isn't commenting on them.
River Rouge-they have 2 tough games befor they can think about rouge. Wrong?
Rematches- anyone that knows football understand it's tough to beat a team twice in the same season let alone 2 teams-wrong?
The T- you lost to the team that runs the true T this year and you are 3-8 against the best T team in the league the last 11 years. He gave the point differential with t teams against non t teams-Wrong?
High scoring affair-same reason as above-
These are his opinions much like throughout the year you guys have given your opinion on your team. If you don't like Gary's thoughts then don't say things that will cause a debate. Because it sounds like he is ready.

  4. The downriver league is not better than the Huron League this year. AP is very good. That's it. Wyndotte isn't wayyyyyyy down and Woodhaven is very average. It's hard to tell because with 10 teams in this league they play nobody out of conference. I believe you will see Franklin be Woodhaven and Bedford crush Wyndotte. Ellen Park got lucky that Chelsea is not in their district else they would be going home as well

  5. Mr. River Rat,
Huron and GI fan base must be working the Blog on the Milan vs Jefferson noise.
    Funny how you can't tell…
Go Bears, or I mean, Go Big Red…
Devils and Chiefs will take care of business, so no need to worry about them.
I am confident either Milan or Jefferson will be playing their last game of the year Friday ( or Saturday if Milan needs to move the game to Saline because their field is wet..)
Good luck to both the Bears and B Reds,
    Regards,
    #?Dad (or Uncle)(( or Mom))(((or Bear Fan)))((((or Devil Fan))))(((((or AP Parent)))))…

  6. As a guy that saw both teams play I'd say that Milan and Jefferson have the best 1-2 combos in the league. Each with 1 great qb and a great back. The defense that shuts the other teams combo down the most wins. I give milan a advantage though because my gosh you cant run it one way because of how amazing that one milan d-lineman is. Good luck to both teams Friday I expect this to be best game out of games that have a team from the league.

  7. Does anyone know how the referees are assigned for the playoffs? Do only Huron League refs do this area, or is there a random assignment?

  8. Being 16 point dogs means we have nothing to lose, all the pressure on them. I bet there already looking past this game also. If the guys put together a complete game get a few breaks who knows. Wouldn't count us out. #12 Uncle

    1. It's a rivalry trophy, GI and Riverview have been playing for it since the fifties. Riverview and GI are neighbors. However, I am not exactly sure where the tradition originates.

  9. Huron League dad here: Wishing all league teams well.
Must say though — seen Allen Park in playoffs last year as well
as against Wyandotte this season — believe they will make a deep
    run this season !

  10. Just having fun #9 Dad. Part of the fun is the hype. We all have to hype it up one way or another, same with the guys who run the blog. Its all good.

Jefferson is focusing on what SMCC did to try and beat you. I'm sure you have your own plan also. It will be a fun game for all.

T is also for tough. We will see Friday night.

    BEAR DOWN !!

    1. I get it. No hard feelings. I know it's not personal. But this Gary dude, I just don't think he likes Milan. Lol
Sorry I have to say this at the Bears expense, but I hope Milan puts a ton of points on the board and keep your Bears to less than 12 just so I can tell Gary his T offense is over rated.
Now, Jefferson is not the team they were 5 weeks ago, but neither is Milan. Jefferson has a good team. They are tough and they will fight with you till the end. I am sure it will be a hard nose, tough game for both and I wish you guys the best. But this Gary dude, can someone please point out some good things he has said about Milan? I can't find any.

    2. …. and while we are pointing things out. Can you point out anything that I said about Milan that was untrue or not fact based?

I was the only person to pick CC To beat Milan.

I was just he only person to pick Jefferson to beat CC.

I don't claim to know everything but I do know a little.

    3. 1. Someone mentioned in an earlier post about Milan being on coarse to play Rouge.
Your answer: Milan has 2 tough games before they can even "THINK" about a Rouge matchup.

2.Someone mentioned Milan beating Adrian, GI, and Jefferson already.
Your response: rematches more often go to the previous loser.

      3. Someone mentioned Milan beating 2 of 3 T teams.
Your response: we all know Milan has trouble with the T.

4.Someone mentioned Jefferson struggling against teams with winning records.
Your response: immediately defending Jefferson, by saying it should be a " high scoring, close" game.

These were just in this thread. If it's not clear you have a bug up your ass for Milan, I don't know what to tell you. I know from your point of view, it seems like you're just giving alternate views, but to a Milan Fan, it is every excuse in the book to discredit their program. I never hear you or Chris say one negative thing about GI. Go back and find me one negative about GI. Yet Milan is the outright winner of the Huron League, I know and GI knows who won head to head. So if it seems like we Milan folk have a red-ass for you, now you know why.

    4. I think you "Milan Folk" need to lighten up. None of the forementioned statements were a bash on Milan. They were all facts. Stop crying.

      OG Islander

  11. Sorry Milan, its just fun to root for Jefferson. Jefferson has been around many, many years, came from terrible in the 70's to much more success in the 80's and 90's, back to struggling in recent times. So some current success is very exciting.

Not bad for a scrappy so called beach rat team. Making the playoffs is a big deal.

Excitement and confidence goes a long way. We having nothing to lose here. You are expected to win. The pressure is on you.

    DA BEARS !!!

    1. I'm not willing to say the DR league has significantly more talent than the HL. Allen Park is their champ and are playing Huron who took 3rd.

Although the DR league has bigger schools, I think if you line them up, the HL would do just fine.

  12. I will say this; I've never seen a fan base like Jefferson, root harder for a 1 game above 500 team. Maybe that has something to do with their turnaround this season. If you didn't know their record, based on the trash talk, you'd think they were the next coming of Cass Tech.

    -Riverview Rat

  13. Uncle of 35, The Bears have had a good season. They game on Friday will be a good one but the Big Reds are not looking past you. And 5-5 is a good season for the Bears. The Milan offense is just better.

  14. It goes both ways. I think it's fair to say that Jefferson struggles against good teams, as they didn't beat anyone with a winning record. They also struggle with spread teams giving up 107 pts (36 a game)in 3 games against Milan, GI, and Huron.

    1. Think it's fair to say, Gary has a bug up his ass about Milan. Everyone that plays the 2nd highest scoring offense, and the BEST defense in the entire league, has all the tools to beat them. Whatever dude! Just check the scoreboard Friday around 9:30. Go ahead now and tell everyone how you've given Milan much respect this year, but facts are facts about the T. Give all the stats about the T, but leave out the most important one, the one that starts with a "W".

    2. I really don't care who says what, who picks who, who thinks who is going to win. The bottom line is Milan won the last meeting. This is a different game, a new season. A season that can end after one game. Friday night will be here soon enough, and all the talking will be done on the field. So you bear fans might want to hold your tongue a bit until then.

    3. I don't mean to hurt your feelings 12:07. I'm just stating facts about the 8-1 HL co-champ Milan Big Reds.

They have had trouble stopping the T. Why is that relevant? They happen to be playing a team that runs the T.

How can I cover the game and not bring that up?

    4. Because you always bring it up. How about you bring up what Milan has done, instead of what they haven't. There was only one team that Milan struggled with. 3 teams run the T, Milan beat 2 of them. It's apparently obvious that there is something you don't like about Milan, and that's ok.
Fact- Milan has given up less points.
Fact- Milan has beat everyone in the district.
Fact- Milan is the 1 seed in the district.

Those are the facts. But Gary refuses to admit or give Milan credit. He likes the ratings, all in good fun.

    5. Gary, were you at the first matchup between Milan and Jefferson? If not, and you're just going by score, I'll try to give you a breakdown. Milan was up 21-7 at the half. I'm not going to bring up the refereeing, so I'll just say Jefferson fought back to take the lead with 6 minutes to go. Milan seemed to wake up at that point and scored to take the lead back, then stopped Jefferson and scored again to go up 2 scores with just over a minute left. Milan played a prevent to not give up too huge of a play, and Jefferson scored with 10 seconds left. There was a point with 6:00 left that seemed like Jefferson might pull off the upset, but at that point you could just feel Milan's talent rising to the challenge and putting the game away. Weird game for Milan! Seemed like they were in control, until they weren't, and then took control again, if that makes sense? I do think Jefferson is playing better, just check the SMCC score. I also know Milan is playing better, and have made significant changes not only in personnel, but in defensive scheme. So, if you weren't there, I hope this helps!

    6. I give the champs all the credit. However the 3 highest point totals they have given up were to the 3 teams that ran the T.
      It's relavent here, no?
      It's interesting, no?

The combined records of those 3 teams were 11-16. Not world beaters.

  15. The Bears are now healthy and have all the momentum.
Everyone knows Milan can't stop the T.
Milan also will get trapped looking past the game at hand and worried about RR, who they will never play.
Jefferson should be the favorite here giving 14.
Milan's 8-1 season ends at 8-2, nothing to be ashamed of, good regular season.
    UncleOf35

  16. Jefferson is a good hard nosed tough team and has the upmost respect from the Milan team. Don't listen to the goofballs on here. Milan respects Jefferson and the way they play. Humphrey is one of the best Huron league players to come through in quite a while. Jefferson is tough and plays with a ton of heart. The Milan faithful knows that. It should be a great HS football game Friday night. Congrats to the Jefferson staff for persevering through the hard times and naysayers. It will be a fun game to watch.

    Milan Fan

  17. Close game with Milan & Jefferson.Did not beat them by much.Jefferson beat themselves in that game. They are much more disciplined now. Won't be a walk in the park for Milan.

    1. And that's not totally true. Look at how many teams in any sport get swept. I was the first to say Jefferson was not a team that I really wanted to see again. They are playing some good football right now. I do know one thing, no one in Milan is over looking them. We had a 21-7 lead at half and lost that lead. I don't think Milan will make that mistake again.

    2. I'm not sure who I will pick just yet. Rematches are usually closer than the first matchup. However the first game in this series was pretty close, so I would assume Milan will have reason to go out and prove it shouldn't have been that close.

    3. Milan beat 2 of the 3 T teams. Only lost to the best program at running said T (in my opinion). Milan is a little tired of hearing about the " trouble with the T" thing. Wouldn't be surprised if they don't " "take it to" Jefferson on Friday. No other team after Friday runs the silly T, time to put it to rest! Prediction: Milan 56 Jefferson 20

    4. In 6 games Vs non-T teams, Milan has given up 44 total points. In 3 games vs teams that run the T, Milan has given up 83 points.

      That's 7 points per game vice 28.

I think it's fair to say that Milan's defense has struggled with the T.

    5. Those close to the program know what went wrong in those games. Guarantee it will be a different Milan team facing that T this time.

  18. That Allen park team is one of the best they've had their in a while, as much as I want my chiefs to win I just can't see it happening.

  19. The following are points scored this year:

    1. GI 312
    2. Milan 309
    3. Jefferson 227
    4. Flat Rock 204
    5. Huron 165
    6. Airport 140
    7. Riverview 140

    1. Milan's most notable defensive stands were against AA Huron 0 pts. , Flat Rock 8 points, Airport 10 points, Adrian 13 points, GI 6 points, and Huron 7 points.

  20. Just want to give a shout-out to Milan's defense. I know they're known for their explosive offense, but they had the best defense in the Huron League. The following were points allowed this year:

    1. Milan 127
    2. GI 141
    3. Huron 159
    4. SMCC 196
    5. Jefferson 234
    6. Flat Rock 235
    7. Riverview 252
    8. Airport 266

  21. Lets go cheifs. We got a tough one this week with allen park so go out to play and make it happen. It aint supposed to be easy.

  22. The refs aren't going to matter guys. Jefferson will be ready.

Just keep the holding and the offensive face masks to a minimum they refs won't have much to do.

Refs were fine when you played SMCC.

Jefferson will follow #9 just as SMCC did, how many yards did he have against SMCC?

    1. He only had 8 carries, that's not hard to shut down or follow. Follow 9 all you want that leaves 6, they both can get the job done so pick your poison. You can stop 1 but not both. Plus Milan got away from the running game against SMCC, they will do just fine Friday. it won't be easy for either team, they both will be bringing their A game.

    2. Following #9 will not beat Milan. Your going to have to stop the entire offense. You didn't do it last game. I will wish you all the best but these Milan boys will be ready.

  23. In the playoffs, do the Home teams hire the referee crews or does the MHSAA provide neutral (to the League/area) officials?

  24. I strongly dissagree home field in high schools doesnt mean that much. teams arent traveling that far. crowd can only get so loud. i'd give a bit of a difference in basketball. football home field is minimal

  25. HEY 11:56 I SAW EVERY HURON GAME THIS YEAR. NOT A PARENT JUST A FAN. THEY LOSE 5 REGULAR ST ARTERS ON DEFENSE & RETURN ALLBUT ONE OF THEIR SKILL PLAYERS. I HAVE ONLY MISSED 2 GAMES OVER THE PAST 5 OR 6 YEARS. I DONT WANT TO BE A AIRPORT SLAPPY,BUT LOOK AT THEIR PROGRAM FROM THE LITTLE LEAGUE, MIDDLE SCHOOL, FROSH, JV ETC THEY WILL ALWAYS BE COMPETIVE WITH SO MANY TO CHOOSE FROM. OF COURSE A LOT WILL DEPEND ON THEIR NEW HEAD COACH WHOEVER THAT MAY BE

  26. Monroe News' website doesn't have much to offer, but in the spirit of completeness, here you go:

    DIVISION 4

    Region 4, District 2

    Jefferson (5-4) at Milan (8-1)
Adrian (5-4) at Grosse Ile (8-1)

Notes: Jefferson is back in the playoffs for the first time since 2006, when they went 8-1 and lost their first playoff game.

The Bears won four of their last five games after starting 1-3.

Milan makes the playoffs for the fourth time in the past five years and eighth time in 10 seasons.

Milan outlasted Jefferson 35-31 on Sept. 16.
Milan beat Grosse Ile 27-6 on Sept. 30.
Grosse Ile beat Jefferson 42-6 on Sept. 2.

    *****

    DIVISION 3

    Region 4, District 2

New Boston Huron (6-3) at Allen Park (9-0)
    Trenton (6-3) at Romulus (8-1)

Notes: Huron is in the playoffs for the third straight season.

Jim Kalbfleisch took over as coach of the Chiefs just weeks before the season started when his son, Dan Kalbfleisch, left to become the athletic director at Gibraltar Carlson.

Despite being located close to each other, Huron and Allen Park have never played each other.

Allen Park and Trenton both play in the Downriver League.

  27. GI should like their matchup. Adrian spreads 'em out and they try to run it with their single back or use their short passing game to move the chains. They will take shots over the top as well.

In other words, their offense is very similar to GI's, but the Islanders likely do it better. It's not like they have to prepare for a completely different style of offense this week.

  28. Li'l playoff preview from M-Live Ann Arbor:

Monroe Jefferson (5-4) at Milan (8-1)

The Bears won their last two games to make the playoffs for the first time since 2006. Meanwhile, Milan, the No. 1 seed in the Division 4 district, has qualified for the playoffs eight of the past 10 seasons.

The two Huron League foes squared off on Sept. 16 in a 35-31 Big Reds win.

“We need to be better defensively with our front seven,” Milan coach Jesse Hoskins said of adjustments that need to be made. “That’s the main thing. We know their fullback is going to get the ball 25-35 times and we are going to need to be ready to stop him. Offensively, we feel pretty good. We just need to keep doing what we’re doing.”

  29. Shout out to coach pickens. He took a lot of bullets in the past now he has the bears in the playoffs. Great job way to stay the course.

  30. First off congrats to Jefferson on your first playoff appearance in a decade. I see Milan winning the district and hopefully Huron can hang with Allen Park but I doubt it. EM

  31. Milan has to come ready to play that's for sure. Hoskins and crew will have them prepared. Up to the Big Reds to come out and play. Home field means a ton.

    1. SMCC was the only loss of the season. Milan didn't play well that game. They got away from what they do best. Much respect for Jefferson though. If Milan wasn't playing them, I would be rooting for them. Classy kids and coaches who refused to quit this year.

      -Milan Fan

  32. Hey GI, here's a tip on how to beat Adrian. Get pressure on their QB, blitz often and you'll win. You can stop the run, but if their QB gets hot, you'll lose. This info is free, because I want Huron League teams to win.

    -Milan Fan

  33. Say what you want – but it is very difficult to beat any team twice. I am not sure if Jefferson has an answer for Milan's offense at this point in the season, but make no mistake that this is not the same Jefferson team they met early in the season.

GI shouldn't look past Adrian either. Adrian does some really good things. Best of luck to all the Huron League teams.

    1. I agree, it does seem that Jefferson is better than earlier in the year. Milan is also getting better each week. The "young" players are not young anymore. They have played a whole season, and it seems the coaching staff is not afraid to get other guys involved. Earlier against Jefferson, it was only Lindeman and Barnes, easy to key on one of them, and Milan still put up 35. Now you have to stop 4 or 5 guys instead of 2. Humphrey and Sovey are great players. If Milan can control those two, they win big.

    1. Watch out for what next year? Their defense is going to crumble with the amount of seniors they're losing. This is their last legit shot for a long time, it's now or never for the chiefs. – HL Fan

    2. I agree. Tough draw to play Allen park first round. Espesially after playing a"
"Week" Summit team. Best of luck though. HL Fan

  34. Milan's young players were still gelling as a team early in the year against Jefferson and still beat them. I think this time at home, and Milan starting to spread the ball around, plus their one-two punch, should not be as close. Jefferson scored with 10 seconds left to make it 35-31. Milan had 2 touchdowns called back. Score should've been 49-24. Now, here comes the Jefferson slaps to tell you all about Humphrey, or stopping the T, or they might even drop a silly slogan like " fear the bear". The floor is yours boys!

    1. I agree with most of this post, but I want to give Jefferson credit for bouncing back from a tough start, to make the playoffs. One word " perseverance"!

    2. All teams were still gelling a few weeks ago…Hmmmm. Do you not believe all 8 Huron league teams were better in later weeks vs week 4? Other than injuries or other serious personnel issues I would expect every team to be better. So that comment is null.
2 TDs called back means there was a penalty. That means they were doing something they were not supposed to do, I.e. breaking the rules, so that comment is void.
Fear the bear. Doesn't even rhyme. Not a lot of creativity or thought put in there either.
D- for trying to stir the pot there fella. Try again.
