Huron League Thoughts and Questions

Looks like all is well on the island.

Coach of the Year?

Heart of a Champion

Not as bad as their record.

Yeeeeeesh

Battered, but beaten?

Champions or Co-Champions, what’s the difference?

Not quite there yet.

What a difference a week makes.

Any chance of a 4-way tie for the league championship?

Playoff picture is starting to come together.

I would love to post the names and locations of some of the clowns that constantly try to post drivel on here.

Is Gary brilliant or just a homer?

State is awful.

  1. Barnes has 128 carries for 1092 yds…. Lindeman has 116 carries for 847 yds…. 52% Barnes…. 48% Lindeman. I'd say that is pretty close to 50/50. They are both great players and I'd say they compliment each other pretty well.

  2. Thanks for the specifics, Gary. That's the kind of insight I enjoy seeing on the blog.

I don't have an issue with cutting. It's a tactic, and there are ways to prepare for it and respond to it. I just didn't have the impression that it was as prevalent as some have said here. I don't have any film to review but I didn't think every defensive lineman on every HL team did it on every play. My impression was that some teams did it more than others, some teams picked their spots, and some teams chose to not use that technique at all. I was trying to find out what other spectators have seen this year and over the years.

  3. Why not just line up all 4 D-Lineman in a tight formation across from the center, then after the snap, just pile drive the center in to the backfield and blow up the T.

  4. Here at the Huron League blog, often times things are leaked pertaining to who is being looked at for coaching jobs in the league. However, it doesn't feel right to announce things, when they just might be rumors, no matter how good our sources are. Just know, Huron is doing it's due diliegence in finding its next coach. No stone is being unturned.

  5. I have seen nearly every team, and I cannot say that I have noticed consistent cut blocking. Also, I do not think RV has a chance this week. Grosse Ile has been brooding over the loss RV delivered them last year all season. I HOPE THEY BOUGHT THEIR TICKETS, BECAUSE IT'S GOING TO BE A HIT PARTY! 2012 throwback.

The people on the Island are certainly in good spirits, but I have a feeling they will be in better spirits after the Colvin Cup comes home.

HAIL, I can't wait for the Wolverines to make a trip out to East Lansing.

    1. Coach, nearly every team CC plays cuts the legs out from the O-lineman. Especially inferior teams. It's legal. There is no "diving at the knees". It's more of a laying out, cutting the guards, so they cannot pull. On offense this is known as a superman block. Like you are taking off to fly. But this of course is on defense.

    2. To help defend against this. T teams line up all their offensive lineman as deep as possible, off the line of scrimmage.

Rules state that the guards and tackles must have their helmet on the hip of the center. This is why the center for most T and double wing teams is almost a full yard or more ahead of the other lineman. They do this so the guards can pull and not be cut.

  6. I'd like to address the people pointing out CC defense grubbing at the knees. Have they done this , "YES." But what is interesting is those same people do not say anything about their defenses cutting CC's offensive Center and guards. So it goes both ways. Everyone in the league is bigger up front then CC so they should not need to cut, but they do. CC does because trying to take undersized players against teams over 200lbs OL would not be productive.

Eventually MHSAA should make cutting of all types a penalty. Until then all teams will use it to their advantage or disadvantage in some cases.

What about Redmond or Giarmo coaching again in the HL or at Carlson?

Whoever gets in the playoffs, best of luck to those teams.

  7. Good question. I have no sources regarding any thought process on the hires. I would say this though about each position.

I anticipate that both schools will do huge and diligent search. Both of those jobs, are very good jobs with a wealth of talent and potential.

On the Huron end let me first say that Jim Kalbfleisch has done a very good job holding them together after Dan left. They could finish 7-2. I don't think Jim has any interest in remaining the head coach. I think Mike Suchy, the defensive coordinator would make a good high school head coach, but I think Huron will most likely go in a direction that focuses on someone who has been a previous successful head coach.

As for Carlson, it appears their interim coach is doing a pretty good job. I don't know his name, but I believe he is younger. They have played better since moving the Franklin (I believe that is his name) kid to QB. They almost beat AP 3 weeks ago and have won the last 2 weeks.

A few names come to mind for both programs, but those coaches are retired and I don't see either getting back into coaching. I also know a few that are coaching elsewhere, but don't know if they would leave where they are. Carlson has great facilities and a couple of guys getting legit D1 interest while Huron seems to be football crazy right now. The crowd at their game Friday was the largest I have ever seen. I would like to know an estimated number that was there.

    1. His name is Buttson and he is a teacher at the HS so it will be hard to replace him if he wants to keep that position

  8. Chris
sorry i know i asked this already but i cant find where I left the question
Big offseason for two schools and their choices for running programs
Huron and Carlson-old time Huron League school
Thoughts on candidates-this is the election season !!!

  9. It's like roulette.. 50/50 chance Barnes or Lindy are getting the rock. Based on down and distance all teams have tendencies. Plus he didn't call the scheme or hole

  10. Just watched a clip on SMCC/ Milan game at the Monroe news Friday night scoreboard. The SMCC coach was yelling out who was getting the ball before the snap. Is Milan that predictable?

  11. I believe that when Riverview fans were talking about this earlier this season when CC did this most people were calling them sore losers. Guess it's fine until it happens to your son.
    -Sore Loser-

  12. GI plays Riverview, who is definitely not as bad as their record. They played very well on friday, things are finally starting to gel with the young Bucs. To bad it took them until week 7 to do so but they have something to prove in week 8. Look for a huge traveling student section to try and cheer the Bucs to victory.

  13. Milan fan/parent here. I have to start off by saying that SMCC won the game Friday night because they were the better team. Milan could not stop them. I also have to say that I was shocked to see so several CC players diving at Milan player's knees. I don't want to see ANY HS player suffer such a serious injury. Especially one that can be avoided.

  14. SMCC showed the heart of a champion by beating a very good Milan team. Looking likely the league gets 4 playoff teams, maybe 3 in the same district in division 3? While there is a chance of a 4 way tie, I would be shocked if Milan or GI lose on Friday. And yes Chris, definitely a rebuild year in East Lansing. EM

  15. 4 way tie is very possible. AP played Milan very close last year and Milan is banged up especially at LB. AP needs to contain Barnes and not agree to play at Saline. Riverview is coming off a big win and this is a long standing rivalry game. GI could be fumble prone and in football, sometimes it takes a funny bounce. SMCC and Huron have to be the favorites and are playing very good. Is all of this likely, no, but it is possible.

  16. Sorry to say Chris, but if you didn't have anonymity, the clowns would disappear, and the blog #'s would plummet. People would get sick of hearing positive things about coaches and players all the time. It's akin to sports talk radio.
