Huron League Thoughts and Questions

The better team won at Saline on Friday.

Does anyone else think the Bears will make the playoffs?

I’ll take to 7-6 wins over teams I rarely beat any day of the week.

Don’t count the Catholics out of the playoffs just yet.

I counted 17 fans in the Grosse Ile student section Friday.

It would be nice to see Flat Rock get to 5-4.

Is Riverview as bad as their record? I don’t think so.

Is it basketball season yet?

I think that game in Saline should have started at 7:30 on Friday.

Did they ever find the 50/50 winner Milan?

I think Nick Humphrey can make a case for best two way player in the league.

Arrogance gets in the way sometimes for all of us.

Looks like my Saturdays are free the rest of the fall.

It was nice to meet some Milan folk Friday.

I haven’t see Riverview or Flat Rock play at all this season.

Hoskins for POTUS? He has my vote.

  1. Jefferson played very well and Sovey is a beast, but some very questionable calls that did change the game, like it or not. And no…. Jefferson did not stop Milan once that night. The penalties making it 2nd and 25 and 3rd and 20 had a little something to do with that. And Jefferson did not have one penalty on offense. Even the last score when Furteny was getting tackled to the ground and bear hugged multiple times.Thats on film too. Milan hasn't had more than 3 penalties in a game all season. Is it a coincidence that they had 12-15 in the Jefferson game? If we see you again at Milan, I think the story might be a little different. I will say this. Milan had a let down in the second half being up 21-7 and Jefferson took advantage. Credit to them. I really hope Jefferson gets in regardless if they play Milan or not. It's good for the league. They will have their hands full against SMCC. Not sure about Huron, but they do play pretty good defense. That games a toss up. Good luck to Jefferson. Tough kids and a ton of heart shown after starting 1-3. Another thought…. What would Jeffrson do if they played GI again?

  2. 12:14, I also watched the game and did not see it that way. The penalties were legit. Sorry you guys don't believe that, but they are on film. We hung with you until the fourth quarter. We stopped you guys a couple times. Not many, but it did happen. We had a let down after you stopped us on 4th down, you guys capitalized quickly to take a 2 TD lead, but we came right back and scored in less than 90 seconds and tried onside kick.

It was a great game, Jefferson almost had you guys. If we would have made that 4th down, we may have went down and scored and ran the clock out. At that point it was 29-23 with 4:00 or so to go. I know you all blame the refs and try to separate yourselves from us. How bout some credit. As I said a few weeks back. You won the game, do you really have to complain because it was close.

    GO BEARS !!!

    1. You guys are a good team. There was some bad calls, but that part of football sometimes. Hope you guys make the playoffs.

  3. Jefferson and the coaching staff will have their hands full these next 3 games. Hope they keep it going and keep up the momentum they have but it might be tough !!

  4. The Milan Jefferson game was a good hard fought game. Milan got jobbed on a handful of penalties. I would love to see them play Jefferson in the playoffs as that might keep River Rouge out of the district. Milan would win the game by at least 4 scores, like they should of last time if the refs didn't call back 3 touchdowns. Jefferson didn't stop Milan one time in that game. When Jefferson took the lead, Milan scored two touchdowns within 3 minutes and about 7 plays. Just one mans opinion who watched the game.

  5. I don't know if the 50-50 winner at the Milan game. Having worked in the press box, I didn't see anyone come up and claim it.

  6. Yes it was. There was even an offensive face mask penalty that called back the biggest run of the night. Those boys are fast, but they definitely get a lot of questionable blocking. Goes with the territory. I'm sure many teams have a few tricks to freeing up their RB's and QB's.

    1. Sometimes when you're dominating the guy across from you, it can appear like a hold, when in fact it's just planting someone in the ground. Milan is very physical, so I'm sure that's the case.

  7. Just curious about the officiating comments by Milan fans at Jefferson a few weeks back…was it a lot of offensive holding calls nullifying big runs that was the problem?

  8. Obviously, a good JV does not signify how good varsity will be. We all want to have positive winning teams at each level. But I don't think the Varsity teams success should be sacrificed to make the JV better. Right now Varsity is 1-5 and JV is 6-0. Perhaps they should move a few kids up to get some experience on Varsity. Could only benefit them for next year. If JV coach insists on hanging onto them at this point to help his record, that is not in the best interest of the program.

Everybody else has 10th graders on Varsity.

    1. Once again!!!! AP has 2 sophomores on varsity that start at least 1 way and are on special teams!!!! #24 and #61. Other sophomores have been asked of late and have decided to decline! That is there and there parents decision to make. Not a coachs!!

  9. Yes View is having a down year after the lose of so many seniors from last season and getting hit with so many injuries this season it is what it is! But the bright side is they have 4 sophmores that have started and have been playing well and they will have 7-8 returning on each side of the ball next season. Next season's team will no doubt be in the hunt for the league championship and a playoff birth. People can say View is just making up excuses this season but in my option no varsity team that has 4 sophmores and 70% of the team are first year juniors and has had as many injuries as the View will be successful.

  10. Every year brings new challenges. View and AP were picked at the top this year and both have 1 win. Milan will return 7-8 on each side of the ball. Smcc will always be a factor. GI loss a ton. Jefferson loses a ton. Huron will have as much talent as anyon like usual. Flat rock returns a lot. You just never know. Coaching will determine everything like it always does.

  11. I think view could go 7-2 or 8-1 next year. 9 returning starters on offense (going from last week) and 8 on defense. Not many wins this year but competed with both huron and milan in there games. Of course this is assuming injuries dont destroy them again, people don't just stop playing, and obviously they work there butts off in the off-season
    View hopeful

  12. Lindeman only needs 87 yards to break 5,000. With 3 games left in the regular season,he will go down in the record books being a top 15 all time state rusher. No other Huron league running back has done that. Look at his carries, I know a few Milan backs have had 300 carries to get 2500 yards. How many carries does Lindeman have? Last year he averaged 12 a game. I am not saying he is the best ever, but he is right up there with all of them, considering his attemps. His stats speak for themself. Barnes is growing every game and that helps Lindeman. They are the best 1 – 2 punch in the league. Maybe the state. They are very good and very fast. Nothing wrong with giving them some credit.

  13. Milan fan here. I for one would not like to run in to Jefferson in the playoffs. That team is going to make waves! After watching Volmerhausen, Becker, and Humphrey; I have to say Humphrey gets my vote for best linebacker in the league. The Sovey kid is very good as well. Both are only behind Lindeman and Barnes as the best duo in the league.

  14. No question the Bears are getting better, as is Flat Rock.

The Milan/SMCC game will be the GAME OF THE WEEK

The logistics involved with the Milan game at Saline did not allow for a 7:30pm start – however, it was discussed.

For sure, Nick Humphrey could make the claim as the best two way player in the league, but so could Trace Lindeman and Demetrius Barnes.

Injuries have most certainly put the dampers on some teams this year.

The league, across everyone, seems to really be struggling with depth.

    1. Humphrey is way more of a defensive presence than both of them. I agree they are better offensively, but not by much

    2. Humphrey is way more of a defensive presence than both of them. I agree they are better offensively, but not by much

    3. Humphrey to slow offense side of ball had good toughness.better linebacker.not best two way player .Huron league is awful .these r good players but years past wouldn't be a thought

  15. I think the bears are getting better every game.
Milan is getting stronger every game.
FR going better than .500 would be huge for them.
RV is better than their record.
AP will turn it up the last 3 games.
