Huron League Thoughts and Questions

Grosse Ile’s defense is extremely fast and physical.

Did I really see a double reverse, double pass for a TD Friday night?

Bear down!

Do they still play for the jug?

I could be spot on with my SMCC preseason prediction.

Nine in the box?

The injury bug sux.

Are people still sleeping on the Jets?

Should be a huge crowd at Milan on Friday.

Every coach and player work hard, some coaches and players work harder than others.

Why would any coach care what I think?

I need to get out and see my alma mater.

Two best coaches in the league will meet on Friday.

Which team has the best chance of winning out, Jefferson or Flat Rock?

I still think we may have a tie for the league title this year.

I plan on doing video on Saturday mornings next year.

On Wisconsin!

  1. Well said, Yo Mamma. I am familiar with youth football and the CYO in our area as well and you are absolutely right. CYO was a great thing, unfortunately, many years later other programs have finally caught on and have evened the bar.

Not so much in football. but travel sports and AAU are ruining numbers in the other sports as well. Baseball, softball, etc.

    Good Luck out there.

  2. Things are in place for some improvements to the blog next season. I believe the blog is expanding to include all of Monroe County. Adding a Monroe county high school football show on YouTube. We love our sponsors. And if anyone is looking to potentially increase their foot traffic, let Chris know for next season. Its going to be big.

  3. SMCC fan here. What would you like us to say or do? Most of the time, we can talk. This year we can't. I, for one, am not a delusional fan. I like to give credit where credit is due, and I call it like I see it. When you talk knowing that your team can't back it up, you end up looking foolish.
I think it is too soon to tell if Kipf is good or not. It seems to me that while the youth football leagues around the county are getting stronger, the Monroe CYO is getting weaker. And, with that being the main feeder program for SMCC, the Falcons may be struggling in the future as well. The 3 main Monroe city catholic schools have merged and the individual parishes have been having a hard time getting enough kids to field their own teams. Even St. Charles in Newport has had fewer kids go out for football. Their team always had kids from St. Anne, St. Patrick's, and St.Mary Rockwood coming to play for them. Is it possible that the Soccer moms are winning the war? I don't know
I also think that this season, we are definitely doing less "preying", so we need more "praying". Hold your heads high, Falcons. Play hard, give it everything you've got, and always to the last whistle.

    1. You are correct, GI does have school of choice, however, it is limited. Usually 10-15 students per year, and only students through middle school. So, school of choice, yes, but not with the intention of gaining better athletes.

  4. Grosse Ile is school of choice but they make you pay if you come from off island. all players on the GI team except 1, grew up together on Grosse Ile and have played football together since they were 8 years old in little league.

  5. Chris, if you had the equipment, a live podcast of the game would really bring you in some sponsorship $$. Bring on a guest commentator. Every Huron League blogger at another game would have their phones to their ears.

  6. The flat rock coaching staff missed their calling. They should have all be magicians, they made all the airport fans disappear from the blog!

    1. Your right. I know Milan and GI do. But, I feel the team with the most to prove is Flat Rock. They are playing good football but still are not getting the respect due to past years teams. Not really fair. They are not a cup cake win for any of the league teams this year. With out a doubt they are the most improve team this year. Regardless of how their record turns out.

  7. Where you at CC fans? People on the blog are ripping you, your team, and questioning your coaches. Does the silence mean you lost Faith? Or do you agree with what the critics are saying? Nothing worse than fair weather fans!

GI and Milan will come down to who plays defense and specials better. Both have offensive weapons. Good luck to both.

    1. Personally I don't have anything against SMCC fans or how some are on the blog. SMCC is a very good football school and the bottom line is they are use to winning. When you lose to 2 teams that they feel they should have beat, they really can't say much. They will get all rowdy again that's for sure. Sometimes it's better to say nothing at all.

  8. GI has 12 returning seniors. One has started for 4 years, 3 for three years and I believe the rest started on one side of the ball or the other last year. A once-in-a-lifetime team on such a small island. I'll bet Coach Bodner wakes up with a smile on his face every morning. GO RED DEVILS!

  9. Only starters back for Milan are Barnes, Furtany, and Lindeman. They seem to be doing ok this year. Smcc has plenty of talent to win and make it in. O Brian, la plante and wool ford are all really good football players. I'd like to have them on my team.

    Milan Fan

  10. If we're using your last year logic; Milan destroyed GI last year 44-7. New year and both teams are different. Nice try though!

  11. Keep in mind everyone was saying Milan and cc would be down to the last play and cc won like 44-15. I see that happening again gi is a big team. I like gi 34-28 good luck to both teams

    1. Milan and CC haven't played this year. Milan and CC have completely different teams from last year. CC this year is small and slow. Milan is loaded with speed and athleticism.

  12. Milan Vs. GI will be a battle!! I think if Milan can get blocks on #73 #50 #55 and #25 they'll have a successful offensive game. If not I think it will a 4 quarter game and idk what will happen.

  13. GI was never behind in the Huron game, the only team I believe GI has been down in was Flat Rock. Although yes that Huron GI game was a battle that fake punt late in third quarter and that 4th and inches stop by GI's D line I think we're the turning points for Huron not keeping it close in the fourth quarter.

    1. Not the start, but the drive, hour before first game. Put the address on here and I'll try to make it in the next few weeks. Or Chris can email me. I think he has it.

  14. Flat Rock is a joke the played Summit and Airport Airport is terrible and Summit is worse no way that team wins out! They might beat Hazel Park last game.

    1. I'm guessing your a Jefferson fan. The only ones to make such a great statement!!With your great wins over ap and a injury plagued riverview team. You really haven't proven a whole lot.

    2. @11:48- only a classless, unintelligent jerk would call a team of hard working kids "a joke". If you haven't seen them play you have no idea what you are talking about!

  15. I think the SMCC folk are so used to defending themselves from the rest of us, now that they don't have to, they are not sure what to say. ???

Hopefully they will come alive for the JET/FALCON rivalry or the BEAR/FALCON rivalry. No fun if they don't get into that.

  16. Smcc folk have to deal with being mediocre this year. It happens. You can still participate in the blog. We all have done it for years when we were not in the spotlight.

Not sure about coach yet. Too quick to say coach is solid. He is still coaching the leftovers from the state champ team. Next couple years will tell.

    1. The only person on that team this year is LaPlante, who has a broken hand… only starters from last year are laplante, lizyness, woolford, laprad, and o'brien

  17. Chris, you HAVE to come to Milan, its going to be one of the biggest games in the region…I'm sure #9 Dad will get you in the box with him, it will be a HUGE turnout for sure, good luck to both teams, and lets just hope that all the boys stay healthy for the entire game!

  18. I love that all the SMCC faithful on this blog have disappeared on here. Where are you guys? So much talk about how good you were. Just giving them a hard time, but in all seriousness, SMCC is not a bad team. They will win the rest of their Huron league games and get into the playoffs at 5-4. Prob win a district. They have some good players no doubt about it. Coach is suspect in my opinion

    1. Do you want to hear excuses? We just haven't been playing like we can but we're working on correcting our mistakes. Hope to play better this week.

  19. Chris…. How did NB lose to GI? Up with 8 min left in the forth and dropped at least 5 interceptions. Did you watch the game? What happened?

    1. First of all Huron never had a lead at any point in that game over GI and there was not 5 dropped ints maybe 1 or 2 GI dominated all game.

  20. It's really a very simple process Based on six wins and playoff points. You only need five wins if you play eight games. Some 5-4 teams will make the playoffs to fill the remaining spots necessary. It's a 256 team playoff divided equally into eight divisions based on enrollment. The first 32 teams make up division one the next 32 Division II and so on and so on down to division eight. If you see divisional rankings right now it's basically speculation by the person doing the rankings.

In your case, if you go to the MHSAA website and put in Milan football you can find the playoff points for Milan.

  21. I will speak about GI and their D after the game Friday. Not really fair to evaluate until seen in person.
As much as I want to see FR win out, I think Jeff has the better chance.
As far as a tie goes, I think who ever wins against GI and MIlan will win out.
I know there are going to be mixed feelings about GI and MIlan, but Huron resembles GI in the offense, so Milan will be familiar. I don't know own if GI has seen an offense like Milans, have they?
And finally, I don't know what is going on at AP, last year's team played us lights out, that's why I picked them at the top this year. I'm not blaming the coaches but if something is not working, if players are not getting it done, make changes. Find something that gives you a spark.
One last thing, can someone please explain how MHSAA determines division? Who decides if you play in D3 or 4? 4 or 5? I don't understand it. I know enrollment is a factor but it seems like they have favorites and they just put them where ever.

  22. Right now its Milan and GI. Everyone else in the league can beat each other especially if there are turnovers and special team blunders. SMCC and AP have had too many turnovers to overcome. Teams have a chance to put a W in the column when SMCC does not execute or play disciplined football. Jefferson is gaining momentum and confidence and seems to be moving up above Riverview, SMCC, and AP. Should be an interesting week and race to the playoffs.

  23. Coaches should care because you are reaching their community. Typically they are accountable to no one, but you call it like you see it.

  24. Friday night can't get here soon enough. Lol
Games like this is what you play for. It's a big game for both teams and win or lose it will be fun to watch. Good luck to GI.
