The Islanders continue their undefeated season.
Gotta love the home run ball.
The Falcon ground game looks as good as ever.
Do the Bears turn their season around?
I’m not sure why you run fake punt on your own 11 yard down 1 point with over 10 minutes left in the game.
The Pirates seem to be getting better.
It doesn’t get any easier for Flat Rock.
Sometimes you need to stick with what you do best.
Game of the week this week?
Please give me your thoughts on the podcast. I am looking to improve them.
Right now Trace Lindeman and Andrew Vollmerhausen lead my Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year ballots.
How has the officiating been this season around the league?
Harbooger?
That was a little weird.
Yo mamma, this is Yo daddy. The amount of guys in your class WAS the same as the rest of us. 150-200 per class, Guys and girls total. That was about average around here other than Monroe high. Currently though, you guys are way down for various reasons we won't get in too. Football is god at SMCC. Boys mainly go there to play that. If your football program died out, so would your school. It is of the upmost importance for you guys to keep it rolling.
I do not care for SMCC and how they do things, but I would never want the school to close. So, buttercup, you do what you need to do and so will we. Its very sad that your other sports are dying out due to football, and basketball in the winter. You used to have a great wrestling program and cross country wasn't bad either. Do you still have tennis or golf? Could be why enrollment numbers are down for you. ???
When I graduated from MCC,we had 72 guys in my class. You can't tell me that every one of my classmates were there just to play football. Let's say that our public school rivals had at least 150-200 male upper class students available to play football. You mean to tell me that with 2 to 3 times the student body, you can't field a decent team. You people would complain if you got hung with a new rope. I'm curious to see what happens now that the Monroe CYO is in shambles, more or less. Will SMCC continue to win, or not? If not, what will you guys complain about then? Suck it up, buttercup. Take your beatings like a man and shut up.
Baas was on Redonds varsity team as a sophomore and was 9-0. Airports record was decreasing after Redmond left. Fumbles have nothing to do with disciple by the coaching staff – players need to be in it mentally as well. JV wins casue they can get away with more mistakes and still win, if JV's coaching staff doesn't correct those wrong runs/plays it won't translate to their varsity level playing. If you go to Airports games at all you'll see Baas up in booth at JV games with headset. It's not always the coach, I've been around Airport a long time and have seen the decline in student numbers and athletes on field as well.
Then you should also know that this year and next year they have the "talent" to be pretty good. They shouldn't be 1-2 right now.
I'm the hard working honest one! Haha
Are we watching Anonymous-on-Anonymous crime here? I can't tell these guys apart…
No crying here. Just saving money. I won't bring that up either.
Your very defensive, I think your the one crying.
American history is full of a lot of dishonest people too, but we won't bring that up.
You are one of those dishonest people as you even said you "won't bring that up" but did.
I will check your numbers tip lip, you must have a lot of time on your hands.
The privates may not culminate their seasons with state titles, but you will find the overall winning percentage of the privates far surpasses the publics.
I don't want to argue, I personally feel it is a venom.
If the cryers didn't have this excuse, they would come up with other excuses. It is what they do; while winners just overcome and when on the occasion they don't win, they just work harder. American history is full of winners that didn't complain, they just worked harder.
About 20% of the schools in Michigan are private. They win football titles at a rate of about 34%. Its an increase yes, but something to continually cry and complain about.. I'm not sure that's enough. If it were over half then yes I could see the point.
Since the beginning of the 8 state titles per year(1990)and then the 9th added for 8 man football(2011), there have been 213 state champions. Of those, 139(65.25%) have been Public and 74(34.74%)private. I just don't see the issue here.
The ironic thing about your argument is that down in Texas the Public School teams are top dog and the Privates play in a weaker division.
The large enrollment publics, yes. The small guys, not as much.
The main venom is public vs. private. Publics should be in a league(class) together and privates in a league(class) together.
You can look at the stats of private vs public schools throughout the state and see the difference.
The kids and parents who are seeking what they believe is better schooling, academics, atmosphere, whatever, are obviously mostly the ones who go to the private schools. Folks, looking for better, care more and try harder, leading to more success. Public school is where many go by default or not wanting to pay for private.
Trying very hard to keep this politically correct. Obviously, this is why private schools will always have an advantage over public, therefore, should be separated.
I would suggest that Riverview's improvement has come from their coach's decision to stay stubborn and continue to get better at running the T, not from making adjustments or creating a hybrid system on the fly between the T and their old offense.
Best running back ever? Surely some of you remember the Strok boys from Riverview back in the 90's. Tim was more of a speed back, early 90s, and Nick was just a brutal runner, ran right through the Huron league and took View to the finals in 97
I did basketball a while back. It is very tough to do. Schedules are all over the place. Football is always one game a week where basketball ends up being every day of the week except Sunday.
I have bigger plans for the blog next year after almost hanging it up this year (I know I say that every year) The addition of local sponsors made that possible this year. It looks like I will have a partner next year and the podcast will possibly include a video that would be aired every Saturday morning. This thing is taking a life of it's own because the podcast have been extremely successful although the talent is suspect.
Mossburg blitzes on nearly every play. I just don't think that is the best way to use him. Let him read and react.
From my perspective, the teams who traditionally get the most grief on this forum are those that make outlandish statements or brag incessantly (usually preseason). That is why Airport is getting hammered this year. Words like "domination" and "the JV team was great so we will be great" were prevalent before the first game was played. Easy pickings to criticize based on three weeks into the season….
Otherwise, the only other real venom has been because of the success of certain programs or the dreaded "recruiting" argument 🙂
Chris-I know the blog is a lot of your personal time but have you ever thought of expanding it to basketball and baseball? Or one or the other?
To be fair on Airport, they weren't very good in football until Redmond got there. After Redmond left they went 5-5, 8-2 and 6-4. I would call that the positive Redmond hangover of the kids left in his program. Airport has a program winning pct since 1950 of .445, the Redmond years make that number much better than the overall reality.
I'll enlighten you on Airport. They made playoffs 15 years straight up until Baas was hired. 15 years is one hell of an accomplishment. The talent is there this year. Everyone expected them to be in the running for the Huron League. There was a lot of bragging on here if you read back by Airport people. Now that they're losing they're getting ragged on by everyone. Same with Riverview. Riverview seems to be getting better. Airport on the other hand seems to be too stubborn to realize what they're doing is not working. A good coaching staff would make adjustments. This staff isn't. Not looking good…..
I said on the blog early on that Mossburg is the best defensive player in the league. I still believe that to be true. Good MLB, fast, athletic and takes good angles to the ball. Seems he is stunted out of position sometimes, but that probably happens with most teams from time to time. Obviously my opinion.
I don't think there is any ill will toward any fan base over another. SMCC usually gets criticized because of their success. Airport has a few losses the last couple of weeks so people are being critical. Riverview has struggled this year so it is kind of the same thing.
The blog number of visitors and commentors is through the roof this year. Probably because of a change in promoting the page and the podcast. Human nature is to be critical in times of peril and great success. Literally just par for the course, but more visitors means more of it. I do moderate much of it. Some slip through then I remove. Sometimes I accidently delete good post.
I'd go mossburg best defense, people rag on him on here cuz he gets too much attention but it's warranted big strong fast always around the ball, that's why he getting d1 looks…lindeman sovey best offensive players they make everyone look slow despite not being big guys they ate tough to stop..it seems the view and airport get dogged a lot, I don't understand the hatred for them I'v only been in the area a few years enlighten me please
I thought Airport was going to ford field??
FR has best junior class. Returns 8 players on D. And 8 players on Offense
there's no guarantee that they'll all be as improved as you except, I'd rather take a junior class from a team like smcc or Huron that's been winning consistently the past few years
Just hope a team from the Huron League makes it to Ford Field this year. Nothing better than seeing a team representing, even if they're a rival.
That would be a good thing. If healthy, GI has a decent chance to win a few games in the playoffs. Looks like they may be D-4-5 border. Which would mean Ida or Rouge. Tough opponents.
Airport does not compare to Hurons Junior class.
If Bodner had 40 guys on his team every year, none of us would have a chance. He is so knowledgeable of the game, he could coach at the college level. He tells the refs what the rules are. If he can maintain a healthy defense, he will be in his 4-4 plugging every hole and crushing that Wing T crap.
Beat a good team and we will talk. He had one good year with exceptional players. Can't wait until they play SMCC and Milan.
Riverview had a double headed monster few years ago that was impressive Samuels or somthing with another kid to…. Then smcc has had stables or solid rbs I mean let's be honest thier team doesn't spread the field out and create lanes it's all power runs so u have to be decent to succeed… Milan lines up wide and creates lanes not taking anything away from the kid but he has a more friendly offense to be explosive that dukes was very good from Milan to… And airport had Anderson back in early 2000 as well as Mayes not so long ago
I agree with you. I know Trace is a good solid RB, saying he is the best ever in the Huron league is a bit much. Over the last 4 years I've seen kids just as good but like you said, the offense dictates so you can't really tell how good one is until he is out in the open. 9 is pretty good in open field.
I would say Huron or GI has the best uniforms.
Hoskins would have to be my pick for best coach, he is young and has brought Milan back to contention.
And Huron would most likely have the best JV maybe AP.
Great Call #9 Dad… He's been fun to watch and I'm sure will continue to be. As far as the earlier conversation about the Hurdling being a penalty… that is true, until the defender drops to his knee… in order for the enforcement of the "illegal contact penalty" the defender can only be in contact with the ground with his feet…. As far as the best back conversation goes, you'd be better off trying to frame that discussion by decade or style. Good luck to all this week….
Also, 10:48, when making your claim for best junior class, don't cite your juniors that are still on JV. Most of the juniors to watch out for next year are not just on the Varsity team this year, they are starting on Varsity this year.
GI doesn't keep juniors on JV, they are always on Varsity. I had always thought it was the rule, but maybe it's always been a matter of depth. They've struggled to keep the roster at or above 20 for years, and have fallen short for many of them.
Not sure how anyone can say Bodner had been the best coach for many years. Jack Giarmo was without a doubt the best coach in the league for 15 years. To say anything otherwise is quite frankly ridiculous.
I can almost guarantee Jack would say Hoskins. When Milan had equal talent or maybe even a little better he beat Jack in back to back years in 12 and 13. If Jack was still coaching. The answer would be very easy. He was really good. Answer: Jack
Milan Fan
He would be greatful just for the fact you people are putting him in the category. It's not important to him. He just loves to play football.
Gee I wonder if 10:48 is a GI fan.
Are Lindeman and Moores the only 4 year varsity starters in the league?
Lindeman is proving this year that he's the best ever. Junior dominate O-Line and with fewer carries, and he's still putting up huge numbers.
1. Lindeman isn't the best ever in the Huron league. The best ever were either Smolen or Harwood.
2. GI has best home advantage.
3. Smcc has coolest uniforms cause they r traditional.
4. Bodner is the best coach and he ha she least numbers.
5. GI has best junior class with received and backs such as #5 on JV and #7 Harwood whose already on varsity. Their whole JV line especially #60 #55 #45 #44 all can block.
Smolen was awesome and great at Grand Valley. That's the only smart thing you said lol
1. It is very hard to say he is the "best" because of the way he and others are/were used. Walker was the "best" back Ive seen besides Wheatly. Smolen was pretty special too.
2. CC in that dark mud pit.
3. GIs are pretty nice and CCs are classic.
4. Ill say Bodner based on success vs number of players.
5. FRs junior class is pretty good but as always its hard to say with 15-18 yr olds.
Adam Servey, best running back ever Huron League. RIP
SMCC, home field, worst field in league but SMCC is used to it.
GI best uniforms in the league.
GI best coach in the league. Has been for many years. Injuries have held him back.
Milan best junior class.
Adam Servey was good. Don't get me wrong. However, he may not have even been the best to come from Jefferson. Jeff Kenney was a bruising, I will run through you type of a back. RIP as well. Jody Dunn and Tony Panza could also be up there as well.
I deleted a few post that were sketchy. Nothing too bad, but probably warranted removal.
Lindeman is great back. He is fast and is very allusive. I would say he is one of the best ever in the league. His stats are impressive. 4,434 rushing yards, 463 receiving yards and 67 TD's.
How about we give Lindeman a break?!? He works his butt off and he deserves some credit. Is he the best? No but he's pretty darn close. His average yard per run is in the top 20 in the state of Michigan and let's be real for a minute, the kid is handed the ball 9-15 times a game and still finishes with 150-200 yards. You people are a joke, why are you calling this kid out? We should be encouraging him not discouraging him with stupid post like the one above. Who cares if he's not the best RB to play in the HL. Why does it matter?
Unless a post got deleted, you are severely overreacting. No one called him out at all. Saying someone isn't the best EVER is not derogatory. SMH
Smcc's uniforms are only good cuz the magic pants and rocket cleats right chiris
Alex Kish from GI back in the day with Rob White QB.
Hard to say the best ever when the offenses have changed so much Over the years. Guys running in the T or the I running is way different then kids running in the spread
Best ever don't know. But I bet he has the best yards per carry and will rush for almost 5,000 yds on varsity. According to max preps averages 12.8 a carry last year with almost 1400 yds
Jesse Walker from Milan was the real deal.
Milan will return 7-8 on each side of the ball next year, so id say they are up there with returning sophomores and juniors. Losing Barnes and Lindeman is rough as those are pretty special guys in the history of Milan football.
Milan Fan
1. No, 2. SMCC, 3. SMCC road, Huron Home, 4. Jesse Hoskins 5. Huron/Riverview
Lindeman for 4 years would make any coach look good.
That 10-1 record the year before he got there was pretty impressive by Hoskins.
True but my statement still holds water.
1. Huron League has been around a LONG time. While a great talent, I will take the "field" on this one.
2. SMCC on the home field advantage
3. I'm partial to the current Huron Chiefs uniforms but the old Riverview uniforms were the best. Simple, no gimmicks, traditional.
4. A lot of new coaches in the league. I'd say Bodnar right now but Rheaume at Flat Rock may change my mind in a decade or so. Think about some of the former coaches though – Lessner, Sanderson, Giarmo, Redmond. Good stuff!
5. Won't even answer the last question. It's like judging a varsity team based on the JV results. A lot happens over twelve months with 16-17 year olds 🙂
1.) sorry but probably not
2.) SMCC probably has the best home field advantage
3.) I love Hurons, then flat rocks
4.) probably Milan coach with Adam kipf in a close second
5.) I gotta go with either smcc or Riverview. Both are very young teams with lots of sophomores and juniors
1. Yes
2. Huron
3. GI
4. Hoskins
5. Milan
5 questions:
Is Lindeman the best running back to ever play in the Huron League?
Who has the best home field advantage?
Who has the best uniforms?
Who is the best coach?
Who has the best Jr. Class going in to next year?
GI has the best homefield advantage and it isn't close. Flags everywhere.
1) I don't think that is the case at all in the Huron League. There might be a few. Many parents start their kids late to help them adapt socially. As an educator I hear parents say all the time, "I should have held my child back a year to help them mature". It never has anything to do with sports.
2) I'm pretty sure SMCC coaches probably don't get paid very much. I'm guessing the head coach is anywhere between 2-4 k. That 10 K a year price tag doesn't buy that much when the school is 400 students or less. A school like Country Day charges over $20K per year and they have over 1800 students K-12. I also believe they have a huge endowment in the multi multi millions. Have you seen their indoor football facility? As for CC in Novi. Their tuition is about $12 K and their enrollment is about 1070. They also have a huge endowment and their fund raiser on WJR every year raises millions and millions.
Here is the other thing, nobody in Michigan gets into coaching for the pay. Most times it is just enough to justify doing something you love. Many times I just hand my coaching check to my wife and say, "thanks for allowing me to be gone so much".
A couple questions for Chris:
1. Do you think the practice of parents holding their kids back in school, just to develope as an athlete is prevalent in the Huron League? I ask this question because a freshman on my son's JV team had his drivers license.
2. Do you think that because SMCC charges almost 10,000 tuition, allow them to hire better coaches? This is not a dig, always wondered about CC and Country Day, and their ability to pay their coaches more.
Really was just more about the comment of split the last 4 lol. If someone is hanging on to those back to back hlc for Milan that great, but it's kinda like Michigan fans that go back 30 years and say look at our record against MSU. Just was trying to be funny. Must more going on in life to be bitter about a high school football question. All in fun on my end
Does SMCC do anything but try to shove it right down people's throats? The Mother who made that comment is unaware of the term and how it is used in football. Not her fault.
Shout out to all the moms on the blog
"You the real MVP"
Love you mom
That is a term or comment used in football all the time. That isn't bad sportsmanship at all. Maybe a poor choice of words to use to a reporter that will use the direct quote. He probably could have said, "we wanted to run the ball right over them".
I use the phrase "go right through their face" with my players in basketball all the time. We would probably just say, "go through them" to a reporter.
This is educational athletics, coaches and kids learn from these situations and I am willing to bet he wishes he massaged that quote a little or won't use it the next time when he speaks to the press.
We aren't out here to make friends. This isn't paddy cake. I'd assume the game plan will be the same the next 6 weeks.
SMCC may have won by score but they lost BIG time on sportsmanship!!! Really??….. "we wanted to shove it down their throats" Shame on Monroe Evening News for printing such a comment!!!!! Refs were terrible!!! Time to get new ones who are more objective!!!
The refs were fine. Don't cry because your boys couldn't walk Saturday. If your boys can't hang I'm sure cross country has spots open. CC will bring that intensity every week. 🙂
It's guys like this who are the worst part of High School sports. Probably wasn't very good himself and is living through his kid. Probably "Napolian Complex" too!!
Milan got pushed around quite a bit last year by SMCC. Is Milan better built to stop the T this year?
Jefferson stepped up, give them some credit. Word is, coaches are on hot seat big time. They will be finally coaching their ass off and the players will be ready.
Best game I have seem them play in several years. They will have several more wins, the coaches want to keep their jobs. Too bad it came to this. Hopefully we see this week in and week out.
GO BEARS.
They should be on hot seat have been bad…alot of get new blood .
Split the last 4 or lost the last 2. Also 3-7 in the last 10 years. Just take it year to year. High school football teams drastically change. Don't hang on to what happened 3 years ago.
Then why do you guys hang on to last year? Just a question, don't get bitter. If it was up to me I would want play SMCC every week. We know they will push us to the limits. There is no doubt SMCC is the team to beat, they always are. But like you said, every team every year changes.
Milan never complains about SMCC unless it's some crybaby dad. We have split the last 4 Huron League titles with SMCC being Better the last two years. Hope it's a great game.
Milan Fan
Milan Fan here. SMCC has not lost more than 3 games in the last 12 years, with the exception of 2011 with 5 losses. They are the team to beat every year for us. Just giving props where it's due. Can't wait for the showdown in a couple weeks, should be fun. GO BIG REDS!!
Ya but Milan plays at SMCC. Those lights. Those lights. Hopefully you sense the sarcasm.
That's for guys that can't beat them. Gotta blame something!
#47 for SMCC is best defensive player in league. Nobody even close. Not the kid from Airpot or Milan compare to him. He does it with less plays on defense since smcc offense is on the field for most of the game. No brainer!
Will someone please give #47 for smcc some love so we don't have to read the same comment every week.
Where is the cookie guy?
I'd take Furtney over anyone on defense. He is an animal!!!
Riverview's really missing their starting captain LB/TE Walsh it appears.
Walsh is missed but the player who filled his spot did good. Riverview has 2 sophmores starting on defense 1 at LB and the other at FS against that Explosive Milan offense and their name was called a lot for tackles. One player doesn't make a team it takes all 11! As a whole Riverview did much better this week.Still a lot of work to do but better.
Chris watch for Jefferson's left tackle and nose guard he's looks pretty solid the first three weeks.
Airport Jefferson game ugly it was gift rapped for Jefferson. They still don't have offense . defense was getting turnovers.not hood teams they might not win another game .jets will win a couple go jets
Just curious how that Mossberg kid is doing. Can't find his stats on Max Preps. Airport is losing, are they not using him properly?
Offensively he has struggled the last two games! I think there asking to much of him! Returning punts, and this wildcat they try to run!Defensively he's a beast!!!!
Game of the week is Huron at SMCC
Jefferson/Airport game of the week.
They already played.
Miscommunication by huron. Its all good this is a new week g/i is over with move on to smcc huron is capable of beating any team in the league if they play together. These boys have a ton of heart.
That's what I like most about this year. Any team can win on Friday night. It's not a gimme.
Awesome run by Sovey, along with his run at the end of the first half. Isn't hurdling illegal in high school though, just saying, I know they didn't call it in the game. He played a heck of a game along with Humphrey, they definitely wanted it more than the Jets.
It is illegal play should have been flaged
Then maybe you should become an official and you call it when you see it…
JJ sports video.Sovey looked sweet.Share it Chris.
I like how competitive the league is this year. Hasn't been like this in a long time. It looks like it's a toss up right now with 3 teams and the rest of the league being capable of beating anyone on any given night. I'm completely mind blown by Airport though. Discipline starts from the coaching staff. Turning the ball over as much as they have and not executing assignments like they should tells me there is absolutely no discipline on that team. Is it time for a coaching change? Who knows. I just don't see things turning around for the Jets.
The fake punt made by Huron wasn't a decision made by the coaching staff or even the players, it was a miscommunication between the both of them, the play called was a punt but what was heard was a play that indicated a pass
Chris did you see Sovey's hurdle the other night? Video is pretty popular
Huron should've punted that ball, especially for having Morse.
I don't know if it would have mattered or not the Devils were marching up and down the field….. on to next week.
