Huron League Thoughts and Questions

I have absolutely no clue who will win the Huron League this year.

From the scrimmages I saw, the offenses appear to be ahead of the defenses.

I saw Huron and SMCC scrimmage. I wonder how the rest of the teams looked?

Apparently, SMCC’s Justin LaPlante will have something to say about the Defensive Player of the Year.

Are there any other teams besides Huron opening the season next Thursday?

I will have my team previews and predictions coming out shortly.

There don’t seem to be any great teams this year, but everyone appears to be solid.

SMCC’s non-league schedule is brutal.

By week three we should have a really good idea about the league.

Are there any freshman up on varsity for anybody?

Are numbers down? Everyone appears to have depth issues.

I’m not sure who the head coach is over at Huron.

  1. Riverview solid offensively in their scrimmage. The only issue is throwing the ball. QB doesn't have much of an arm. Defensively they can stop the run but passing is a whole different story. View will have trouble against teams that throw the ball alot.

  2. Unique poster and reader here. Looking forward to the season. Good health to all HL teams.

Any plans for HLF Blog merch, Chris? Everyone at Milan games could know I'm a reader from my HLF Blog mesh-back trucker hat. Food for thought…

  3. I do see Huron beating Airport and SMCC.

I can't follow unique posters based on the way I have it set up. It really doesn't effect the site. Unique visitors is hovering around 300 right now and will max out on Friday nights to about 3,000. Daily during September and October I hover around 1,000 a day.

  4. Watching the airport scrimmage Thursday, they may surprise everyone with a new look. They are going to try and air the ball out and utilize the size of #15 and get the ball in his hands.

  5. Everyone on here wants their team to win. Win the league, that's what everyone predicts. Every team will have different issues against every opponent. It's really all about match ups. I think it's a toss up on who wins the league. Airport will be a lot better this year, Huron will be ok, SMCC, well you better play your A game against them, RV will be tough, and Milan has speed. I don't think Jefferson, GI and FR will be at the top, but I do see all 3 of them competing and spoiling someone's Friday night.
I think the teams are on a more even playing field this year, but if I had to pick someone winning the league, I would say Milan, AP, RV and Huron have the best chances. Everyone will know by week 4 who the strongest teams are in the league. Good luck to all this week in preparing for the first game of the season.

  6. I don't see Huron beating SMCC, GI, Milan, or Riverview and Airport is a toss up game. Like Chris said. I think their a year away and trust his judgment being familiar with the program

  7. Without Hartwick….. I just don't see it. Play calling should be very interesting. They also have the toughest league schedule through that middle stretch.

  8. Until AP beats a good team, not sure how anyone could pick them in the top four let alone number 1. They haven't won a meaningless game against a good opponent in 4 years. Let's see how it plays out in week 2

  9. Huron goes 5-4 at best thinking more 4-5 with how the schedule works out. But have two non conference games they should win. If they beat AP they go 5-4.Interested in how the play calling will be handled.

  10. Watched 2 scrimmages yesterday and talked to some coaches about other league teams. My revised predictions:

    1- Airport
    2- Riverview
3 and 4- Huron or Milan
    5- SMCC
    6- Flat Rock
    7- Grosse Ile
    8- Jefferson

  11. I was at the Smcc scrimmage they need to tighten up that D. Not worried about Offense. They have some kids that can run.. Very young and green.. 6-3 would be a good year for them!!

  12. 1 week away, Adrian comes to Milan. Chris what do you know about Adrian? Milan scrimmages Bedford and went toe to toe with them. Can we compare Adrian to Bedford or is it apples and oranges?

  13. Numbers are down — guess soccer moms win !
Witnessed grosse ile, riverview and smcc scrimmages – all three are going into
season with small numbers, however, all three have solid starting lineups.
got to give edge to whatever team stays HEALTHY (lets hope all of them)
Love the intensity of the SMCC coaches, old school !
Milan has me concerned: Seems too quiet over there, if the two headed monster gets a small
crease and protection, they may light up the scoreboard — but can they defend ?

  14. I am told that Jim Kalbfleish will be the interim Head Coach at Huron. After the season, the Athletic Director will conduct a search for a permanent Coach. Most coaches are committed at this point, and Huron would not want a Coach that would leave a team this close to the start of the season. In saying that, I do not mean to be demeaning to Dan Kalbfliesh in any way. Dan had no idea that this administrative job would become available, and he needed to do what was best for his family. I congratulate him and wish him well him with Gibraltar.
