Huron League Thoughts and Questions

Is SMCC capable of defending their league title?

Will Milan’s three-headed monster of Lindeman, Barnes, and Hoskins lead them to a title?

Will Riverview’s starless, though talented roster make a run at the league title?

Can anyone outside of New Boston name a player on Huron’s loaded roster?

Grosse Ile may have enough talent to win the league, do they have the depth?

Is Airport headed back to the top tier of the league or will they descend back into football obscurity?

Can Jefferson and Flat Rock build on 3 win seasons?

This may be the most wide open league race in years.

Who are the stars in the league this year?

Does anyone make a playoff run this season?

Would Huron just put field turf in instead of playing on that hay field? Seriously that grass is awful right now.

  1. The Huron League is wide open this year. Could be kind of a down year for the entire league but at least we have this blog!!!!

  2. Milan will be as talented as anyone in the league this year. And truthfully believe they have the best coaching staff in the league and that goes a long way with a young team.

    Milan Fan

  3. Not just tired of flat rock this is the year culture is changing same song and dance every year talk at the end of year then we can say yes culture is changing

    1. Why is Flat Rock the only school not allowed to participate on this blog? I hear plenty of optimism from Airport fans after a down year… I say great! We all see how hard our kids work and we are optimistic that their work will pay off. If you don't like me supporting my son's team, and the work they put in, simply don't read it and move on.

    2. You said something mean. Your a bully. My experience on here has caused me pain. Lets get channel 4 to do a news segmwnt on your bullying.

  4. You're seriously an idiot. I'm sure Milan will beast your team like they have on a regular basis. Leave Flat Rock alone. They are the smallest team in the league and trying to get things rolling. Good for them. Sounds like an Airport fan mad that Flat Rock beat them last year lol

  5. Girls basketball is culture at flat rock you think because you have more kids out that is changing culture? beating two winless teams and a 1-8 airport team ( 14 years it took so it was coming at some point) beat good teams now you can. Talk changing the culture. summit hazel park and a down year for airport? You will beat summit and might beat a down milan team because they can be beat this year they really don't have much and we will hear talk about playoffs and blah blah you will falter

    1. No… If you read my post you'd see that I said the new coach is influencing the culture. I wasn't talking… Didn't make a prediction, didn't make any bold proclamations based off of last year's JV record, and I'm certainly not disrespecting any other Huron League programs, including Milan. Also, more kids coming out is a sign that culture is changing. Finally, I don't play on the team, so I assure you that I won't falter, but I'm guessing by your command of The English language that you very well might be in tenth grade. Have a great season!

  6. Many times in HS, the best players play at LB. A position that requires size, speed and toughness. I would presume most teams are rather strong at LB.

  7. 10:31,
Fair enough… I apologize if it appeared I was faulting you for your opinion. I commend you for volunteering, and appreciate your comments. Wishing your son and his team a safe and successful season!

  8. 12:59, you are correct, It was 2 years ago. Obviously it takes a couple years to see everybody at your home field. I was just stating my opinion, I have done a lot of coaching and getting the best out of your kids is what its all about. I am not an SMCC fan or a Riverview fan, I just know what I witnessed and they seem to have matched the results. We will see what happens this season. Hopefully all coaching staffs will take some notes from SMCC and Riverview. It will benefit the league.
Coach Reaume sounds like a good coach on and off the field, hopefully he will help make your program successful.

  9. FLat Rock needs to move athletics up the list of importance… it is faaaaaarrrr down the list as it sits now. They need numbers, especially in football.

    1. Over 30 on Varsity this year which is a major improvement from years past… The culture is changing at Flat Rock, and it all starts with the Head Coach.

  10. flat rock may surprise? Leave no doubt we will take a 2 game winning streak into week two dating back from last year we play summit its a "W". These kids are winners beat Airport last year and it was no fluke it was a beat down take the bad snap away and over earlier than the last play. THat win catapults us to success….oh wait we did lose to Jefferson after that win we must learn how to handle success and these kids can do it

  11. Stick to doing the chains pal. View has the most talent in the league year in and year out and does nothing with it. Milan went into their house last year and blasted them. SMCC had an awesome team last year and should have won it all. If not, they should have made it to Ford Field. Jack would of without a doubt. No question about it. Riverview is consistently out coached and we will see how good SMCC is without the studs they had last year. They have 3-4 really good players back, but that line they had last year was exceptional. Coaching will show early if they struggle to run the ball. Always want the league teams to do good, but familiar with what they lost and could be a long year if they can't move people off the ball.

  12. just do the chains respect each staff that comes down to Navarre Each team comes in at different times of the year with different talent levels and different goals at different times of the year. Each game will not be competitive with your beloved falcons so take in the fact that each game is different if the game fierce and close the whole game coaches will coach a game different than an out of control game basing what you hear week in and week out is far fetched from the truth off all staffs.

    1. I see losses vs. Huron View and Milan. Westphalia and LCC are near certain losses. Both far and on the road vs great teams. 5 will get them in the playoffs. To me, that's the best I would hope for realistically.

    2. So what you are saying is that if they beat Westphalia on the road, there is a good chance they win the league … being that Westphalia is a near certain loss and the 3 league games are only losses (but not "near certain")?

    3. IF they beat P-W, I will have to reevaluate. Huron should win the league. I'm not sure Kabby's loss will affect them much. Addition by subtraction. He helped build the program from nothing but held them back IMO from being as good as they could be. Which is why Chris is calling for Giarmo to come in. You give Jack Huron's numbers and talent and look out HL.

    4. One thing for sure. If SMCC Makes the playoffs they will be one tough, ready, battle tested team after going through a very tough schedule. After all they are a Div 6 team.
      Huron League Fan.

  13. Riverview and SMCC will be at the top again. Viewing it from the chain gang, they both have similar, composed, all on the same page coaching staffs. They take the time to talk to the kids when they come out, tell them what they do wrong and could do better. Fire them up and send them back in. No other team did this. No coaches talked to any Airport kids, they stood there. Quiet as could be, chain gang was louder than Airport bench. Huron had coaches yelling at the fans! WTF ?
Flat Rock swore so much I had to cover my own ears. Jefferson fired kids up, but no real advice on what the kids could do better when they went back on the field.
Milan has some very cocky kids, if they settle down and listen to coaches, they will do well. GI, Good program, all about the depth.

I have done chains several years, witnessed all coaching staffs in recent times. Even a comment about my own team, even though chain gang was not obviously on their side. Anyhow, that's how I see it. SMCC and Riverview are well coached. I see them near the top again.

    1. My guess is that you worked the chains two years ago when Flat Rock came to your son's school? While I liked the previous coach quite a bit, he certainly was not afraid to use a four letter word from time to time. The current head coach is not one to swear, has a rule that the players do not swear, and is the epitome of how a coach is supposed to act, according to you. Please do me a favor and watch more closely this year when Flat Rock comes to your son's school, and you are on the chains. Flat Rock gets bashed quite a bit on this blog, but the new coaching staff is changing the culture, and I really don't think your comments are warranted. I am proud my son plays for Coach Reaume and his staff, because I know they will take an interest in my son's life far after his football playing days are done, which has earned my respect more than wins and losses ever will. With all of that said, wins and losses are important, and while I'm not in to predictions, or using last year's JV success as an indicator of good the Varsity team will be this year, it's my belief that Flat Rock may surprise some this year.

  14. Grosse Ile is returning a package of hard nosed athletes. They return a three year starting tailback in Andrew Vollmerhausen, an honorable mention/ second team all league offensive tackle and defensive end (Dominic Tromble). Mike Simone, another returning O-lineman, and another 285 pound two way starting lineman. Not to mention they are packing 2 capable wide receivers. Justin Moores is a 4 year starter, and more capable than their all star receiver last year, he stands at 6'3 215, and the other receiver is 6'2 210. The Red Devils have a lot to prove this year, and a lot of senior leadership.

  15. CC fan here. I coached Justin Goretski of Airport in grade school. Kids as tough as nails. Would think he would play LB. anyone know?

  16. What I've seen teams do from time to time is schedule a bad big school instead of a decent small school. They won't get many playoff points from a school like Summit's other wins (since there might not be any) but they do get more playoff points for defeating a class B or class A school.

  17. If I was any school in the Huron League I wouldn't schedule any tough programs either. Wouldn't you rather get to the playoffs with a 9-0 or 8-1 record as opposed to being 6-3 or squeezing in with 5-4. If you win 6 games you're automatically in. A lot of the Huron League schools will lose 3 league games. Why chance it outside of that to possibly lose a 4th because you scheduled a powerhouse??

    1. Are you really serious 9:28 ??? You would really want to make the playoffs beating the weakest teams you could schedule??? Just to say that you were in the playoffs and get your butts handed to you the first PO Game??? REALLY???

  18. If encores is the only game you game schedule, then do a better job AD. I watched Summit play the last few years. They can barely snap the ball and run plays. New Boston and anyone else should not play them if they want to better their program in any way.

  19. I liked the homered by the officials. If you were at the Milan Airport game last year it was the worst officiated game I've ever seen being one sided and I've watched Milan and HS football for 30 years. I do know a compliant was filed with the MHSAA and video was sent after asking the AD about the game.

It was literally the craziest game I've ever seen regarding officiating. The best one was when the Milan QB fumbled and the balled rolled 5 feet out of bounds and after the the referees gathered, gave the ball to AP. Honestly never seen anything like that in my 30 years.

    Milan Fan

  20. Chris you do a great job and appreciate what you do. Class C in football. Divison 5 is class C. Airport is about twice the size enrollment of Dundee. Summit is a charter school that good JV schools can beat as of the last few years. I'm glad Demps took over especially if Huron league teams are going to play them.

  21. Dundee is Class B. Summit is Class B and bigger than half the schools in the Huron League. Riverview played Ecorse because that is who was a available. They play Romulus this year which is class A and about the same size as Riverview.

  22. I can't believe more people haven't mentioned Michael Foor #4 from Airport when they talk about the talent on that squad. Foor is one of the fastest backs in the league this year from what I saw last year. I know people think Airport is too much right now with the high expectations but think about it: Milan barely escaped that night with the W, got homered by the officials in Flat Rock, and if they had any senior leadership last year they should have came out with W's over Adrian and Tecumseh. Not sure why they scheduled an average program like Dundee to open the year but I see the Jets shocking the league. Coach B has the program heading in the right direction

  23. Airports history of stopping the T-formation is not very good over the past four or five years. Dundee will score points and move the ball, but they shouldn't be able to stop airport in less the turnover bug hits them

  24. Why did airport schedule a class C game against Dundee when they are twice their size? That's almost as bad as Riverview plane Ecorse last year or new Boston playing summit.

Dundee is also in rebuild mode and numbers are below average. Will take them a few more years before they can really compete in their conference which is a below average conference in football anyway since Hudson disappeared.

  25. If I had a monster at middle linebacker I'd be blitz happy too!! Trap and buck sweep won't work though. Dundee will have to be creative in order to stay close.

  26. Huron League mid level Airport going to show LCAA mid level Dundee the difference in leagues. Airport 32 Dundee 14. In a game where Airport dominates the LOS.

  27. Just talked to administration. Cancelling week 1 game with Airport because of their 8-1 JV record last year. Just figured there was no reason to play………

  28. Good to see this blog back up and firing on all cylinders. Also good to see each team have their supporters rep their boys, and I even like that there's a bit of saltiness already.

Milan has their two speedsters back, so don't blink while they are on the field! They only need a crease, but can Milan's line give them that crease consistently? We shall see. Should be fun!

  29. No one is talking about how the schedule and momentum affect the season. Of note from last season:
GI lost by one score against Parma Jackson; then was upset the next week by Jefferson.
Jefferson surprised GI in the first week of league play; then (possibly overconfident) lost the next week to Airport 7-0.
Riverview lost a hard hitting contest to SMCC then lost the next week to Milan by 20 points.
Huron started 2-0 and ran into a solid 0-2 GI team that was not going to lose 3 straight.
The 26-31 loss to GI sent Huron into a tail spin and they dropped the next three games.
The same Milan team that soundly beat Riverview was later soundly beat by SMCC; the next week Milan nearly lost to Airport.
SMCC lost to a ranked Lansing CC and an expected run ended abruptly in a defensive struggle against Clinton.
After Milan escaped Airport, they caught fire and had a nice high scoring playoff run.

    This coming season:
Riverview starts the season against Romulus, SMCC then Milan. If they start 3-0 or 0-3, Airport better be ready.
Huron again has a gauntlet playing GI, SMCC, Milan then Riverview.

  30. SMCC is solid and very capable of defending their league title with hard work from the O-line. Milan’s three-headed monster will win some games in the first half, but will need their supporting cast to step up to be in contention. Riverview should end up in the top half and by the end of the season, some teams will regret not knowing who their stars are. Huron will also make some teams regret not knowing their key players. Depth is always a question at GI, but even with no injuries, they are competing with teams that have more one-way players. Airport shouldn’t look past Huron, nor take for granted Jefferson or Flat Rock. Flat Rock should build on their three win season. Jefferson won’t catch GI off guard this year and will need to forget about stars and play as a team. The race won’t be so open after Sept. 2nd. SMCC and Milan should make a playoff run this season and hope 3 more teams are in it. People have been complaining about Huron’s and SMCC’s fields for decades. Just play the game.

  31. One of things I noticed about CC last few years while watching firm was their outstanding team speed. For them to be successful they will need to duplicate that effort.

  32. I'd like to know the definition of highly recruited. To me and most people that would mean you have at least one division 1 offer and are getting recruited heavily by the MAC schools in the area.

  33. How do people know Jefferson has bad coaches when their only source of information is this blog? People know nothing except for wins and losses. And if thats the case bash flat rocks or airports coaches. oh wait airport is gonna be top tier this year lol yeah right.

    1. I know if you are not a coaches kid or someone they know personally you ain't getting touches regardless of how good you are. They dont care about winning at Jefferson they only care about how good there kids look. Politics politics politics

  34. No one wants to be mean to Jefferson. The fact is that without being honest, the coaching is very subpar and that's why they can't compete. Sorry. Just being honest. Jefferson is the type of school that needs good coaching in preset to compete and they just don't have it. The kids are tough and will find a way to win a league game against someone that will be predicted to beat them.

  35. Agree, I see Milan as a team with a good chance to be in it til the end if they stay healthy. I also see Huron, SMCC and have to think Riverview will be contenders, although it sounds like GI has a lot coming back. Like a lot of people have mentioned, should be a fun year with no clear cut favorite yet.

    1. Jefferson won two league games last season. We haven't really heard about anyone yet. I don't remember Humphrey and Sovey from last year making a difference in the game I saw, but I only saw them once. This is a blog … go ahead and say something about them and let us know which games they are expected to dominate.

    2. They combined for like 300 yards and 3 or 4 tds against GI and Humphrey rushed for over a thousand last year

    1. That's why they play the game. I don't think Milan over looks anyone. SMCC is always great and can play with anyone. I think it's better this year for Milan than the last 2 years. We shall see. I don't know about Huron, again, we will see soon enough.

  36. 100 players at all three levels? Those are good numbers, but kinda normal and what a team of that school size should have. 45 on varsity and 55 between fresh and JV are good numbers.

  37. Grosse Ile only had 7 seniors last year. They will miss Beach, Smorch, Tucker and Cuddy. They should be very good though.

I'm wondering if any players were on the lacrosse team and will they have to sit any games during the football season. That could hurt in some games.

*Please don't name drop or speculate on that. I was just thinking out loud.

  38. @955 GI did not start or play any seniors on the oline last year. They started two sophs and 3 juniors. I'm sure others can confirm on here.

  39. Please do something relavent and make the playoffs. Should of beat Milan….. But you didn't. You haven't in 5 years. Beat SMCC…. You haven't in 5 years. Just do something other than talk about JV records. Please just do something.

  40. Airport shocks Riverview for Huron League title, you heard it hear first! They will beat Milan, they would have last year in double OT if they had a tad more experience, and with SMCC bring down, I see Airport beating them especially with them taking on CC at home. Throw in their non league W's and a more even Huron League, I really see the Jets returning to glory and the playoffs!

    1. Hearing it here first, and after the first week of league play, we won't here it again. Huron beats Airport Sept. 2.

  41. GI had a couple good senior lineman that started. Maybe they got hurt and other kids played, but they did lose some good kids on the line

  42. Yes that is a heck of a trio at Milan, what the supporting cast does will determine how good they are. I believe Airport is headed back to the top tier of the league but I also believe they are a year away from league title contention, hope I'm wrong. SMCC is definitely capable, I learned long ago not to count them out. No household names on the Chiefs but it wouldn't surprise me if they won the league if they get solid QB play. I don't see Riverview contending especially if that's true about the QB being out. I could see Milan getting to a D4 regional final again, SMCC is always a threat in D6. EM

  43. Gi is the sleeper. They're returning their entire oline and have good rb's. If the Devils can pass to keep defenses honest they have a shot. Defensively they will be solid.

  44. Milan will contend. I think the same teams from last year will be looking for a title. The 3 headed monster at Milan is as strong as any duo and coach can be with any team. There will be some tough games this year. RV will be tough, along with SMCC and Airport. Should be another fun season.

    1. I'm anxious for the season to get going. Being my sons senior year I really don't want it to end though. I know it's going to be fun and tough at the same time. Coach Hoskins will have Milan ready. I don't know what Adrian will have or what kind of test it will be but we are open for the challenge. I'm also anxious to see the out come of 2 other games, Huron and Airport and RV and SMCC. I believe these are the 4 top teams and these 2 games will tell Milan a lot. Just my opinion.
      #9 Dad

  45. We will see how good the coaches are at Flat Rock without their QB from last season. That kid reminded me a lot of Mitroka from GI. He was a serious difference maker.

    1. Can we Google Luke Bailey or will you share which team he is on, his position(s) and why he is to be noted?

    2. Luke Bailey is a dual threat on both sides of the ball, playing offensive guard and defensive tackle. At standing 6 foot 5, 265 lbs he will be a big game changer this year. All I'm saying is to watch out on defense and don't underestimate Flat Rock
