Times have changed and many leagues need to be re-evaluated. Many of the same teams win the same leagues year in, year out. As school numbers drop for some and grow for others, the dividing line is growing rapidly.
FR has been the only school in the Huron League every year since 1950. Milan was also in the league at that time leaving after 1967. Airport and GI joined in 1959. CC, Jefferson, Carlson and Huron joined in 1968. CC played FR from 59-67; as well as playing GI and Airport various years in the 50s and 60s. Clearly, those that made decisions back then were OK with a Catholic school in the league as well as the teams coming in at the same time, as well as those afterward. When people were calling for Flat Rock to leave the league, those that value tradition spoke for Flat Rock. I'm speaking up for CC as well as every team in the league. We have a great league and those that bash any one team is bashing our league.
Why does everyone throw me out there? Lol. Who cares how a team is put together. I sure don't. I want to play the best schools and programs. That's how you get better. #9 Dad
Exactly, old news. But still continues. Guess nobody cares. Can't wait till my kids are out of football. I will go watch Monroe games. S.O.S. in Huron league. 10 years from Smcc will be 56-1 against Huron. Whatever people, your the ones letting it happen.
Of Course I will have to respond to that comment 1:58. I will take it easy on you with my reply. SMCC and their programs have been a major discussion on here for years. All kids work hard, many schools have great coaches. You and your school are not special. The talent pool you have is much greater than the rest of us. You have the best kids from each CYO school in Monroe county.(plus more). You then narrow that down with the best of the best with them. Crazy. You should never lose at anything.
The only sports you lose at are the ones that aren't in the CYO system. Cross Country, Track, Wrestling, Golf , Tennis and so on. Where are those same extremely hard working kids and spectacular coaches for those sports.?? Get the picture Genius. Your talent pool is assembled differently than the rest of us, so you should play schools that are assembled the same way. I could go on and on.
If SMCC doesn't leave someday, perhaps the public schools will leave you there in the league alone. Coaches need to realize they can not assemble the same talent pool system you have. By the way, SMCC put SMCC on the map. You guys could not give a rats ass about the rest of us. The only friend you got on here is #9 dad and that's because he knows Milan can beat you this year.
GO RAMS, CHIEFS, BUCS, BEARS, BIG REDS, DEVILS, & JETS. !!!!!!!!
I think alot of people would love to see FR make the playoffs but they have to still get by Jefferson (great chance for 2nd league win) and then they have Riverview who's starting to roll and Huron. Their week 9 I against Hazel Park which should be a win. Whether making it to the playoffs or not if the Rams go 4-5 I would say it's a good year for not winning a game in 2 years. These kids have gotten better every week and continue to work hard from what I have seen. Great job to the coaching staff and keep pushing them
Go bears beat flat rock Kull will throw 3td passes wilkens will get 150 yards catching Humphrey get 50 yards fsila ,90 yards receiving. Go bears sovey 150 yards running
You are a regular Jimmy the Greek with your prognostication (that means predicting) skills. The above may be true, but FR can move the chains, too. Should be a good game.
Milans offensive line opened some nice holes for Lindeman and Barnes last night. I was reading an article on mlive, didnt know that #73 Furtney was a sophomore, hes a beast out there!!!
Chris, SMCC lost 6 of the best of those kids you are referring to, to transfer: Couterier(sp) twins(monroe), Knezevich(monroe), Vankanen(sp)twins Summerfield and Whited(Vicksburg). This group has had to overcome those losses.
1:15pm Well if you recall it was SMCC who ended the longest winning streak in the nation last year when they beat Ithicca in the finals. And guess what that was a win for the Huron League.
I think Bino will be back for Milan. He was up and walking around on the sidelines for SMCC. I don't think he will be very missed next week against Airport. Have him rest for a week and come back ready for the big game.
Not saying the talent is not there. Just not the amount as the bigger schools. The best class was 2014 as far as talent. 2015 is good but a few of those kids now play for Monroe. 2016 is ok.
With all due respect to the hard work SMCC athletes put in during the off season and season, I was told 6 years ago that the 2015 and 2016 classes that SMCC would likely get were as athletic and talented as any classes ever at SMCC. Of course they work hard, but please don't act like the talent isn't there. Combine those two things with great coaching and the results are entirely expected.
10:56 you need a clue. The play in class A , B or C is totally different now with the divisions. How does SMCC have advantage? They play bigger public schools who should beat them. Most SMCC teams don't have the talent as the teams they are beating. They out hustle, outsmart, out coach and work harder with less. That alone makes them champions. They have a higher expectation on and off the field. Cry all you want but the fact is you make excuses for your teams shortfalls. The teams in this league that are winning are also the most demanding in the off-season. You want to win then do what it takes instead of crying like a little b____!
Thank you for feeling this site going, Chris. I understand all the emotion around SMCC. I personally am glad they are in the league. I think they give teams a motivation to play better. I wish we had played them a little later in the season. I'm looking forward to this week's Riverview vs Huron game. Riverview Dad
#9's dad you are a classy guy! How can you not root for #9? Obviously you are a good parent and very proud of his accomplishments. It all starts at home with every student athlete. I've never seen him play but but through this blog and the paper it's all good! I bet if asked him about his success he would point to his team mates first. This type of athlete is rare and Milan is lucky that he is part of their sports programs. As a CC Alum I hope that he can take them to the finals. It's great that the Huron League has two power house programs. Win or lose SMCC will be better prepared for the play off grind. Everyone is banged up at this point and hopefully what ever injury that #4 has for SMCC won't stop him from participating. It's just the next man up mentality that you have to have to be successful. I'll bet there are a couple of kids behind #9 waiting to get in the game. Hopefully it's for good reasons.
I'm really not classy. I'm southern. And there is no point in boasting or bragging. My kid has a God given talent that he uses and he works really hard. I know most of the boys on the team. From all the juniors down I have coached in middle school. Every one works hard and has for the past 3 years. And I know just like these Milan kids that I have coached, every school in this Huron league has kids just like them. Football is the best sport to learn life lessons. People who bash SMCC for being great is wrong, they have worked hard for that. Just like Flatt Rock continues to work hard, and they got a win. I just try to be honest, civil, and state my opinion based off facts. The bottom line is at the end of the game, they are still kids, trying to better themselves on and off the field and it's our job to make that happen. Thanks for the compliment. And Chris, you do a great job! I love the blog. Not just to give my opinion about our games, but to hear others, conversate with others, and get updates on other games. It's a great thing and I hope you keep it going. #9 Dad
So well said, #9 Dad. My son plays for Flat Rock, and I appreciate your consistency in recognizing how hard they, and all players in the league work. Hard work does pay off, and the life lessons football teaches are unlike any other sport. EMU's football coach recently wrote an open letter about this directed at parents that are wary of having their sons play… Great read! Anyway, good luck the rest of the way for #9 and Milan as a whole. Hard not to root for classy people… Oh, and amazing work Chris. My wife and I are addicted to this blog.
I hope Justin isn't out for the season. He is a great player.
I should be ashamed of providing an outlet for people who are fans of the Huron League? Nobody has supported SMCC and the Huron League on the blog more than myself.
I censor much that comes on here, but I can't do that with everything. I try to allow free speech. I think maybe you need to grow a thicker skin or consider the source when someone is posting negatively about the school you support.
If you don't like what is here then don't read. For that matter, don't read the newspaper, watch the news, or participate in any social media. If you want Pleasantville go hide in a hole.
Everybody knows I could take or leave the blog. It is time consuming, but it provides a free service and I know it has enhanced the fan experience in the Huron League since I started the blog in 2009. If you don't think so, look at the coverage of the entire Huron League before the blog started. It stunk! I'm not patting myself on the back. It is obvious by what people tell me and by how many people visit the blog daily.
Carrabino is most likely out for the season. Any kid as tough as him would not have sat out an entire game if it weren't serious. As a good friend of the family and an alumni of SMCC I often check out this blog to keep up on my home town. I must say I am appalled by what this blog has turned into.
Chris you should be ashamed for facilitating something that allows a group of vicious parents to take potshots at a Catholic school and the dedicated athletes that attend there.
Each and every person that has slandared this school either out of jealously or outright hatred because of their own shortfalls should be ashamed.
The league is full of great athletes from each school. SMCC has put Huron league located in the southeast corner Michigan in the spot light. Because of SMCC the state knows there are sports played south of Detroit. Shame on everyone that cannot accept this as a good thing for their school and the Huron league.
I am truly saddened that any athlete that works so hard for the sport they love suffer a season ending injury.
Not true cc fan know is happy when a kid gets hurt.secondly . cc has not put Monro on the map 99.9 percent don't even know when they play state champion game….its high school .
You are the typical person that make me not like smcc. Really smcc put the huron league on the map. Your arrogance is why people talk trash about smcc. They have great programs and athletes so does every other school in one form or another.
Really you thinking to much it's not important .what cc does or rest of league..its just high school .if your self worth is tide to your high school team.your a big big loser .Chris thank you for this blog great job ..
If anyone knows Airports history, Baas was part of that 14 year streak. I'm sure it's tough for him to be the one to end that. But if any of you are actually at the Airport games, talent is not there. I'm glad for Flat Rock, their players had more heart in that game for sure. Good win.
I think next weeks game of the week is Riverview-Huron. If Huron wins, they need to win the next three (winnable) games to get into the playoffs. Riverview needs to win three of the next four to get into the playoffs. They have a tougher road still needing to play GI and River Rouge. River Rouge is 4-0; but their opponents are 6-11 combined. Not necessarily routing for Huron this next week, but do hope to see four Huron league teams make the playoffs. GI and FR still can make the playoffs, but both need four wins; GI plays Milan; FR has Riverview then Huron. Jefferson and Airport are out, but can still play spoiler.
SMCC should play those same private schools. They shouldn't keep playing in our league where they have 40-14 and 46-1 records against some of the teams. why keep doing this. It doesn't do any of us any good. The only one who makes out in this deal is SMCC year in and year out.
Play a bunch of class B schools that are public, pad your stats and points, go to playoffs and crush all the Class C teams. Does anyone local or involved with MHSAA have a problem with this? It has happened for the last 25 years. I believe Sanderson had them play Class B regardless of school size. That was proper. Ask the now men who won a state title at Class B level. Many schools west of here in Class C are lobbying for this, They are very tired on SMCC. Manchester, Clinton, Grass Lake.
A private school has a distinct advantage and should play other private schools. They played 2 last year, won by 1 point and lost to the other. That's how it should be. Have a great day.
To 9:28 am. Your team could not compete in division 6. Then the " sister of the poor" comment cracks me up. Look at SMCC schedule you moron. They don't put cupcake teams on it. They play the toughest schedule most years. And the whole 14 year thing is not that big of a deal. What did you win?
It was so exciting on the field after our win last night against Huron. I can only imagine how proud FR was and the joy they got and felt from winning their game. It goes to show hard work pays off. Don't know what is going on with # 4 from SMCC. He is a great back and I hope he is ok and able to finish his season. We lost Hendricks for the remainder and for me any kid from any school that's a senior is hard to swallow when they get hurt. Time to prepare for GI. Again congrats to FR for their win! #9 Dad
Long time Airport fan here. Can't blame the clock, refs or players. Flat Rock is a good team. #10 is a good athlete, #12 pretty good also. First half was a good game, second half Flat Rock made better adjustments, better coaching, outstanding coaching. Airport didn't adjust well at half time, Flat Rock did, that's coaching, Airport got out coached, would Redmond have done better, maybe because of exp. Airport a little short on talent. Nice job Flat Rock. Airport only scores because of a bad snap on a punt from Flat Rock, they had nothing the second half but heart, kids played hard. Fire Baas???? No ……young coach still learning, only his third year. Very young staff also, cept for Mossberg and Grant… Chris, when is the last time you've heard of a high school coach getting fired for not winning? I hope the Flat Rock coaching staff stays and continues to build and grow, good for the school, good for the league.
I don't agree with firing a coach for not winning. At times they do not have the talent and can only do so much. However, not having talent is partly due to the lack of development of younger players. It may be as simple as changing the culture of his lower level teams.
Flat Rock dad here… Thank you so much for your classy response. It was a hard fought game, which either team could have won. Airport players never quit, and should be proud of their effort. That was the type of game where whoever had the ball last was going to win.
OLSM plays in a much tougher league. Instead of one or two tough games a year they play a tough game every week. Playing brother rice, Novi catholic central, and De Lasalle in back to back to back weeks is tough . U of D which alwYs finishes last would be a contender in the Huron.
Marshall beats Jackson lumen Christi 21 to 14. Milan didn't have # 9 and blew a two touchdown lead in the fourth. With #9 they win that game by 4 Tds and are undefeated right now. Might of been the best thing that happened to this team.
I agree with the loss being a good thing for Milan. Puts a lot in perspective for them. Don't agree with the 4 Td win if 9 plays. Might have changed the out come, but never the less a team has to over come and adapt. They panicked a bit against Marshall, and it showed. If they were to play right now, without 9, they win by a score at least. They have grew up a lot and are truly playing as a team. And I'm hoping they continue to work hard to make a great run. They have the talent and the athletes to do it, they have the offense, the coaching, just got to want it. #9 Dad
Congrats to FR for the win. Sounds like they had a hard fought game tonight and came out on top. Good for them! Us Milan folk are pretty happy too! We did a lot tonight, defense worked a little harder, gave up a little thru the air but held it together. Offense was out standing. O-line was opening up some big holes! Great win Big Reds! #9 Dad
#9 dad your a solid dude milan is a awesome team this season . No doubt they win the league this season. For FR to get a league win huge that's what this school needs
Thanks. As a parent you teach your kids to stay the coarse, be diligent and never quit. As a coach you do the same but teach improvement on every play. Everyone gets tired of losing. No one gets tired of winning. But one win can change a team for the season. My gut tells me FR will play it's remaining schedule with a lot more heart, more intensity. Enjoy your win! It's a great thing and there is nothing wrong with it! #9 Dad
The streak of getting into the playoffs and losing in the first round? (Slow Clap). He continued that at Monroe. Just like Lion fans, just hoping to be mediocre.
Mediocre? Going to the playoffs for 14 years straight with a great record and sometimes win a league tittle. While most of the league is sitting home on week 10? Sorry where not divison 6 and play sister of the poor the 1st to weeks of playoffs.
FR and Airport played their butts off. Time just wasn't on Jets side, very back and forth game. Can't blame everything on coaches, nothing they can do with performance on the field. Jets fan but good win FR.
That is how it starts. Fire the coach. Blame the refs!. The clock guy is a homer! That is how both Huron and Flat Rock went into the abyss for decades. Be careful Airport and Jefferson. You are doing the same things. Does it help when you bad mouth the coach and other players at home at the dinner table? How about when you scream from the stands? Sometimes the talent isn't there. Sometimes the coach needs to get more experience. Sometimes over zealous parents need to shut mouths. Your kids hear every word you say about their coach, friends and officials. Pretty soon they start to believe that junk. Then kids start playing for themselves. They don't work in the off season. They stop playing all together. Pretty soon you have a football team with 18 kids and you win 8 or 9 games in a five year span when you use to win that every year. Then it rolls into a decade or two and you wonder where did the success go. Or you only went to the games when your kid played and you bailed on the program after that because they didn't win. Careful people! You just may get what your asking for.
Why don't you give credit where credit is due Embarrassment. FR played their butt off and made 1 more play than Airport. You can't ask for a better game going back and forth. Tired of reading all the time people putting down programs. If you know so much put ur name in and go coach.
I think Milan wins. Trace Lindeman is a great great high school player. He dominated that game tonight. He was unbelievable. He did everything tonight, I think I bought my 50/50 ticket from him at halftime
Firing Baas is NOT the answer. Mossberg runs the defense, he has complete control. The O put up enough points to win, even with the continuing problem with fumbles. If Baas or Duffy believe coaching is the issue, then it's up to them to fix it. Right now, AP has a group that is both undersized and slow as a unit. Bad combination. The sophomores on the team have time to gain or improve both, as do the juniors. This season is just going to be painful.
I am sure that the Rams first victory over the Jets in 14 years was because of refs and clock. I feel like heart and coaching might be the two reasons.
Im gonna go out on a limb and say that was Flat Rock's biggest win in years. Flat Rock ran the same play almost all game and Airport could not stop it. #10 is an absolute stud for Flat Rock. It was a hell of a game to watch. As an Airport fan I'm disappointed, but hats off to Flat Rock and congrats. EM
Flat Rock converted a 3rd and 23 from their own 23 on a fullback run up the middle. He rumbled down to the 7 yard line WOW!!! FR scored 2 plays later and got the two point concersion. FR 28-21. Nearing end 3rd qtr. EM
Sure, we can be like the Mega red, white and blue. Msybe split into two leagues and call one Leaders and the other Legends.
Times have changed and many leagues need to be re-evaluated. Many of the same teams win the same leagues year in, year out. As school numbers drop for some and grow for others, the dividing line is growing rapidly.

Did Jefferson fire their football coaches. Heard rumor tonight.
Furtney is a beast! He has definitely stepped up and is making a name for himself. Lindeman and Barnes are lucky to have him blocking for them.
He's a Sophomore? He's holding his own out there for sure. Interesting to see what he does next year.
Meant #74 Furtney (not #73)

You are the typical person that make me not like smcc. Really smcc put the huron league on the map. Your arrogance is why people talk trash about smcc. They have great programs and athletes so does every other school in one form or another.
Oh god we feel so bad and ashamed. Get over yourself.
RN
Have a great day.
your hatred makes us stronger, it binds us.

A Huron League team has the states longest current win streak at 10 game
-bn
bn you are correct sir. I was gonna say OLSM is at least tied with SMCC but I just saw they lost last night. EM
OLSM plays in a much tougher league. Instead of one or two tough games a year they play a tough game every week. Playing brother rice, Novi catholic central, and De Lasalle in back to back to back weeks is tough . U of D which alwYs finishes last would be a contender in the Huron.
Carrabino possibly out for the season
Carrabino will be back next week I hear.
Marshall beats Jackson lumen Christi 21 to 14. Milan didn't have # 9 and blew a two touchdown lead in the fourth. With #9 they win that game by 4 Tds and are undefeated right now. Might of been the best thing that happened to this team.
Milan Fan
#9 Dad
Flat Rock and Huron have the same record.
If coach eric redmen was at airport the last 3 season I garurente airport has better seasons. And the streak might still be alive.
Sorry where not divison 6 and play sister of the poor the 1st to weeks of playoffs.
two
Congrats to SMCC on qualifying for the playoffs! Even if they lose-out, they'll be the first 5-4 team into the playoffs with their schedule strength.
Any word on Carabino.. He played 2 series and was done?
FR and Airport played their butts off. Time just wasn't on Jets side, very back and forth game. Can't blame everything on coaches, nothing they can do with performance on the field. Jets fan but good win FR.
Do FR and Airport still play for the jug? Or is that just in hoops?
Only trophies that are played for now are Carlson and Huron. Both in basketball
Riverview and GI play for the Colvin Cup
Shut up
Why don't you give credit where credit is due Embarrassment. FR played their butt off and made 1 more play than Airport. You can't ask for a better game going back and forth. Tired of reading all the time people putting down programs. If you know so much put ur name in and go coach.
Once I graduate college I plan on it.
Adler?
Airport was just plain out coached . They looked unprepared. I'm surprised as a airport fan.
LOL at 10:34!
I think Milan wins. Trace Lindeman is a great great high school player. He dominated that game tonight. He was unbelievable. He did everything tonight, I think I bought my 50/50 ticket from him at halftime
Yeah I think we will keep him around for a while.
That's a complete embarrassment for airport!, when are they gonna relized to fire baas!?
Firing Baas is NOT the answer. Mossberg runs the defense, he has complete control. The O put up enough points to win, even with the continuing problem with fumbles. If Baas or Duffy believe coaching is the issue, then it's up to them to fix it. Right now, AP has a group that is both undersized and slow as a unit. Bad combination. The sophomores on the team have time to gain or improve both, as do the juniors. This season is just going to be painful.
#10 on FR was unstoppable. But surprised they haven't won more games when refs and clock keep are on their side. Jets never gave up.
I am sure that the Rams first victory over the Jets in 14 years was because of refs and clock. I feel like heart and coaching might be the two reasons.
Stop
Hey Chris what's your early take on Milan-SMCC in 2 weeks? I believe you've seen them both play. EM
EM
Nice to hear a lot about a couple other teams in the League. Very exciting. Win or Lose.
Great catch by #20 on FR's last drive. #10 played his heart out all game, and really stepped up on that last drive! Go Rams!
Just a great win for FR!! Happy that those young men keep battling and working hard. It has paid off for them.
Riverview 42 Jefferson 7 Final
Wow that sounds like quite an ending to an already exciting game! Good for FR, a well-fought victory.
What flat rock won't win a league game all season haha
Flat Rock scores TD as the clock expires with a QB run. Flat Rock 34. Airport 28. Nice win Flat Rock
Wow!!!! EM
47-21 Milan final
Airport ties it 28 apiece. 4 down td to Mossberg. 1:03 left. EM
Airport nice pass for a TD. Kicks PAT to tie it at 28. 1:03 to go. Good game.
Flat Rock bad snap on punt. Airport ball on the 11. Bout to score
Flat Rock holds on 4th down. Airport fails to covert, dropped a certain TD pass. 2:30 to go. FR 28 Air 21
Lindenan is an absolute beast
35-7 Smcc
Flat Rock converted a 3rd and 23 from their own 23 on a fullback run up the middle. He rumbled down to the 7 yard line WOW!!! FR scored 2 plays later and got the two point concersion. FR 28-21. Nearing end 3rd qtr. EM
Flat Rock flipped the score, 28-21, 2:06 third
Airport INT leads to FR drive. Airport 21. FR 28.
My 33-24 prediction for the Milan Huron game looks pretty good right now! Doubt Huron kicks a field goal, though.
Airport 21 Flat Rock 20. 8 minutes left 3rd qtr. EM
Rams score, 21-20, missed PAT. 8:20 third
CC 35 Grossel Ile 0 still in 3rd
Pretty pass from Flatt Rock QB. Missed PAT. Air 21. FR 20. Mid third
…and now Lindeman steps in front of a Hartwick pass and takes it to the house.
Lindeman with another huge run. 26-14 Milan
Airport – 21. Flat Rock 14. Short pass for Airport, long touchdown.
Jets score, 21-14 Airport
Looks like SMCC is handling GI's spread just fine
Riverview 28 Jefferson 0. Refs are blind . Holy crap.. gonna be a rough second half. Lol.
Knotted at 14 at Flat Rock, intermission. Rams will be kicking to Jets to start 2'nd half.
Airport Flat Rock 14 all at halftime. EM
CC 21 Grosse Ile 0 at the half
Airport fumble followed by Flat Rock turnover on downs, then a 60 yd TD By Myring. 14-14 4:13 left in half
14-7 Rams. Airport D has no idea what to do. Every play working for Flat Rock
7-0 Milan. Lindeman scores from distance.
