Huron League Thoughts and Questions

Congrats to SMCC on winning the State Championship.

Congrats to Jack Giarmo and his coaching staff on winning the State Championship.

Game MVP? I thought Mitchell Lamour was. Stats don’t tell the whole story.

I thought SMCC’s speed on defense was the difference.

Ithaca travels well.

That was Windham’s 10th interception of the year.

I’m sure SMCC liked having David Howey out there on defense.

Why doesn’t SMCC throw to the TE Woolford? Really doesn’t matter I guess.

Public vs Private, who cares?

That was Ithaca’s lowest scoring output in 87 games.

I didn’t think those officials had the best game.

Did any team in the Huron League have as many injuries as SMCC this season?

Does Giarmo ponder retirement or get back to it December 1st?

Next year’s Division 6 State Final prediction, Ithaca over SMCC.

Congrats to Huron’s Dan Kalbfleisch on being picked Division 3/4 AP Coach of the Year.

Has Flat Rock hired anyone yet?

2015 Early season Huron League Champ prediction, Milan.

Huron All League teams come out sometime this week.

I was 10-0 in playoff picks.

  1. Better yet, 8:12. Why don't your team leave the HL, and join a conference full of 10 to 12 year olds. You MIGHT be able to compete. I doubt it, though. You'd definitely find something unfair about that conference as well. "Your team's kids don't all live on the same street." "That kid has a better pair of cleats than my kid." "The weather was too cold to play outside." BOO HOO! Dork.

  2. How about this Mr. 8:12? SMCC becomes an Independent, like ND in college, and they'd still whip your schools' butt any day of the year. All your crying does is prove to the rest of the area is that YOUR team isn't very good, and NEVER will be any good. You could have a conference with every team having the same enrollment, the same facilities, the same equipment, the same transportation, and have kids the exact same sizes across the board, and YOUR team would still LOSE. You would be ecstatic though. You'd have PLENTY to complain about. Let me know when this dream world YOU live in becomes reality. Take my tax dollars that my kid doesn't use, and go get your team a few extra practice lessons.

  3. Listen folks, there will always be idiots like this guy who cry unfair. If SMCC stunk at football, would he still say things were unfair? Why is it unfair? Because they beat your team right? Ask yourself the question. If SMCC stunk it up every year, would I still cry unfair? If the answer is no(which of course it would be) then you are just crying about your team losing. It's called sour grapes.

  4. I will be coaching Mr 3:09. and it will be in a fair league where there are no private schools.

Bring in Trenton or Ida. Definitely help the league. SMCC got to go.

    Even got a name SECC.
    South East Catholic Conference.
    sound good to me.

  5. Listen Folks,
School of choice is nothing compared to having is whole wide open area to attract kids. School of choice attracts a few, not anywhere near the majority. I could list 10 different towns the SMCC kids are from. The biggest thing is not that the kids are from outside of any possible district that SMCC could claim, these kids were potential athletes at their local school (where their parents pay taxes by the way) and now that local public school has lost them and SMCC has gained them. That is a very poor system to me and that is exactly why private schools dominate.

10:21 your stats are based on championships. whatever? SMCC is at the top of the league almost every single year, all other schools cycle. SMCC has no cycle, because on a down year they are able to always pick up a few. Lets see how basketball turns out. Lost some great ones last year, as of the end of last season, nobody was coming in with any real height, I bet big money we will see a couple kids well over 6ft when SMCC takes the court this year.

    Always an *** Asterisk

  6. Do you understand how school of choice works? Look at the Clinton's website.

"A minimum of one student will be accepted for each of the above grades. Additional students may be accepted after enrollment projections are further reviewed by the Board of Education."

Most schools don't have much availability. Huron (my district) doesn't accept many school of choice kids, but when they do it works like this:

Open enrollment period. All applications are accepted by set date. If there are 5 ninth grade spots available. (I don't think they had any this year, but this is hypothetical). They take all the ninth grade applications and hold a public drawing. What ever names are pulled are admitted.

That is how it works in the district I live in.

Most schools list the open spots and grades available. IT has to be made public and open to all interested.

  7. SMCC beat 3 school of choice schools and 2 private schools in their tourney run. Oh and one of them had won 69 in a row.

    not bad

  8. Why doesn't Flat Rock hire Mr. Asterisk? He seems to know more about football than anyone! Then he could try to accomplish his goal of wiping out all of the private schools in the state!

  9. FR did no thire anyone nor have they interviewed anyone yet. They waited until playoffs were done to post the position and now it is open for 10 days.

    Anybody know anybody applying???

  10. Huron league champs last 18 years(Giarmo's tenure)

    Airport- 7
    Milan- 5
    SMCC- 5
    Riverview- 3
    Jefferson- 2

With Hurons emergence, it seems to me that the league is rather balanced.

  11. That's alright 9:30am, SMCC will stay in a league they've been in, rich of great rivalries and good competition from larger schools. Good luck trying to assemble that league, though.

  12. Hit a nerve I guess 11:59.
    Still an asterisk. *****
    Sorry buddy.

I'm working on a Catholic School league for Southeast Michigan. SMCC will be invited. See how it goes. Have some interest !!!

  13. Carrabino played on offense only. Averaged 12 carries a game. The MVP on CCs team was Windham. Carrabino was of course valuable but Windham was the one guy cc couldn't do without.

  14. losing the Couterier twins, Whited, Knezevich all to transfer and all the injuries, Robinson, Howey, Lako, Vuich… those are their best players who got injured. What a testament to the coaching ability and the next man up attitude of the program at SMCC.

Quite an accomplishment with all that adversity. amazing.

  15. No clear cut favorite next year. I see Huron, Milan, Riverview and SMCC all having very legit shots at winning the league. I don't see anyone running the table. I also don't see an outright winner.

  16. Stick it in your asterisk! They should put an asterisk on your GED. Who needs money when you've got a world class education that you get for free at ALL public schools? After all, that's what is important, when all the sports nonsense is over, right? Why do you even look at this blog? It shouldn't even peak your interest. Go to some MENSA blog or something. That way, you won't be exposed to all of our inferior minds.
If GI wants more kids, that coach should start looking at his marching band. They have 30 kids on the football team, and about 375 in the marching band.

And you're right, they have absolutely no money on Grosse Ile. Poorest school in the HL.

  17. Yeah, yeah Fluke. I like the idea on the other blog. different divisions. Come on 7 out of 8 championships are private. Would have been 8 of 8 but there aren't any private schools that large. Someone important please see this and do some thing about it.

This is very unfair and definitely puts an asterisk on any private teams championship.

Tired of it. Same thing in our league. Private school must go. They will probly be at or near top next year and year after that and so on. No fun anymore.

Different kids. we all know it.
Kids at private schools are very serious about their sports, lessons, travel, etc. Not very many do that in public. Most don't have the money.

Best coach in our league was held back because he didn't have as many kids on his team as he would have liked. If he could field the team he desires, he would out coach most. Heck, he speaks are the coaching seminars to all the other coaches. Talking about Grosse Ile of course.

I will not be at any games next year. Good Luck to all. Hopefully somebody does something significant about all these issues. I am not alone in my thoughts.

  18. For all you sore losers who plan on posting AGAIN on how much better the private schools have it, SHUT YOUR MOUTHS! We are ALL tired of your sour grape attitudes. You got STOMPED. Accept it, and move on. Hopefully, for you, there is always next year. It's too bad that computer keyboards don't have lids on them like pianos, so I could slam the lid down on your fingers. ENOUGH ALREADY!

  19. This year was a fluke with having so many private school champs. Lets look a D6 since we had the champ this year. We will start with 1999-2013 since that is how long the system of 6 wins has been in place.
    Champions: 13 public – 2 private
    Runners up: 11 public – 4 private
    % of private champions 13%
% of private playoff participants 8%
So yes when a private school gets into the playoffs they have a slightly better chance of winning. I think the averages will mellow out so stop getting your thong in a bunch.

  20. #26 lives across the street from SMCC. His Grandparents went there, Parents went there, siblings, cousins…Most receive help with tuition, but it is still a huge sacrifice to send kids there. NO ONE RECEIVES a FREE RIDE. I can think of a lot of places to put that money, but none that will help my children more. We don't have much, but are glad we send our children there. If we can do it…so can you. It is a choice! I will take the grades over the athletic accomplishments anytime! Stats don't lie! Proud of SMCC and all of their accomplishments! Every school in the huron league has the same opportunity as SMCC…in some cases…even more. If you don't believe me….enroll your child and find out for yourself.

  21. Tired. It's just like when you go to college and apply for financial aid. The arch diocese decides on the financial aid. And it is not very few for school of choice Riverview. Is one of the largest school of choice percentage of kids in the state. For the one thousandth time who would be worth an absolute free ride at cc. The team won the title not individuals. You know nothing about who pays what.

    1. Who r you kidding cc has kids from downriver to play hockey to ball and all in between. If you need financial add for high school quezz college not going to happen .cc parents education first. Get a life

  22. More than have the teams in state champion games were private it makes a difference when u have a more selective pool of athletes too chose ftom

  23. A couple of thoughts.

Congrats to Huron's Jon Krug and John Lako on their AP All State selections.

I think Milan's senior class is special enough and Trace Lindeman along with coach Hoskins gives them a legit shot at the league title.

I was talking about the blog all league picks.

I thought Lamour was awesome at DT especially with his size.

    1. Milan might make playoffs next year. Coaching changes had an effect on them. You never know if a team will turn the corner from one year to next. 4-5 varsity 0-9 jv will be interesting.

      1Huron 2Smcc 3Riverview 4Milan

  24. Well in other news, Hurons only 2 losses came at the hands of State Champion teams.. that's gotta count for something eh?

Chris, Milan!? I have all the faith in Trace but idk I think Riverview and Huron will battle it out next year.

    Congrats CC! Be proud fellas!

    KC

  25. All Huron League came out Nov 5th…MVP thoughts, what about little LaPlante he had 10 tackles (lead the team), until i saw the stats I thought it should be either Travis or Bryce.

  26. Agree that Mitchell was the unsung hero. He kept pressure on the QB all night and that long run on 3rd and forever late in the 4th kept them from getting good field position at a key point in the game. He's a great kid, soft spoken and works his butt off…so happy for him!

    JI

  27. Just watched Orchard Lake St Mary's and was not impressed with the team or their crowd ? I think SMCC would beat them..

  28. Chris, what do you see in Milan next year that will be different to garner a league crown?

I'm a Milan alum and thier JV squad was horrendous…any thoughts on this, anyone?

  29. Maybe he felt he had a better chance at the 4th down than a onside kick. If I remember correctly, Marks made a great play. I thought the Ithaca player would have caught it and scored if not for a great play.

  30. 10 for 10 is impressive, Chris. Lamour definitely made an impact out there. I watched the replay and the biggest question I asked was "Why didn't Ithaca take the safety???"

They were down 15-12 late in the fourth. They were facing a 4th and 22. Best case scenario is that you get a first down at about the 30 or so. Worst case is you hand the ball to SMCC with a 1st and goal, almost ensuring you go down by 2 possessions.

Take the safety!!! You're down 17-12…sure, not a field goal to tie, but you only kicked 1 all year, and your kicker missed a PAT. When you elect to purposefully safety yourself, you're allowed to try an onside kick, which they definitely would have done. Furthermore, they would have had some timeouts they wouldn't have wasted on that 4th down in order to give their D a chance to stop SMCC in case they didn't get the onside kick.

For a coach that won 69 games and 4 state championships in a row, it's shocking that isn't what they decided to do.

    1. What r you talking about school of choice.your only allowed very few students from other schools .l know most of c.c players r not paying full tuition if any to attend that school.so yes they do select who pays who doesn't 9000$ per year really most off those kids families can't afford that who r they fooling
