Rivalry Week

It has been a good year in the Huron League this season. I like that the last week of the league season is for rivalry week. It keeps many people interested in the season and the blog until late in the year.

Football is a unique sport. For the most part it is just played here in the United States. Many times people get to caught up in the winning and losing of football. What they don’t see is the weekly preparation and the tiredless offseason that kids and coaches put into the sports that they love.

It is easy to be critical of anyone who doesn’t have success on the gridiron, but isn’t the purpose of a game like football to just compete?

Rivalry week usually brings the best out of all the teams involved. The rival always knows that they are going to get the other teams best effort. Nobody is going to lay down, no matter what the pundits say that their chances are.

Enjoy this week of football, it is one of the best weeks of the football year. One of my all time favorite movie quotes is from Braveheart. It comes from the  Scottish character Malcolm Wallace when referencing an apparent war with the English. He says, “we do not have to beat them, just fight them“.

Have fun kids!

  1. Lol for those using records to complete a rivalry scheme, just stop. Obviously you're neither from Flat Rock nor Huron. The rivalry as Rams 2011 Graduate stated, the rivalry was quite fierce and back and forth. And not just football but basketball also. The team that was always looked at to beat (was the top team) but when it came to Flat rock, they were the team we wanted to beat. Alas with Basketball when Huron and Flat Rock fought it out figuratively and literally, for the league title… Flat Rock was the team up the road. The school you wanted to beat if you were a Huron athlete. Hell they were the school you wanted to beat to Taco Bell after your game was over so if an argument broke out, you weren't the school getting tossed out. Lol guess you just had to be there to see it..

  2. When you play at CC it is drilled into you that every team has their best game against you. It's like having a full season of rivalry games. Airport and Jefferson are even more special because many CC players played CYO with kids from those schools. The last league game is always fun and is always special to the seniors. I'm super excited to see how all these games are going to turn out.

  3. I graduated in the class of 2011 from Flat Rock. The rivalry between the years of 2007-2011 I personally know was awesome. It was like Michigan and Ohio state. It was in every sport, some of the greatest basketball games I have ever watched were flat rock and huron. From the Taco Bell bowl to a bleached H in the middle of r field it was crazy. I'm a little bias but I think it's one of the best in the league.

  4. Flat Rock is 8-4 in the last 12 with the point spread being 7 points or less in 7 of those games.

Flat Rock has lost 13 straight to Airport. The average margin of victory for the Jets is 4 TD's. Not much of a rivalry there.

  5. I think the Huron/FR rivalry goes beyond just football.

Also look at the last 20 years of each rivalry in football. Most of FR's wins against Airport were pre Redmond.

I would also ask FR kids who their biggest rival is.
