  1. Wow, now folks are bashing Milan's playoff chances? Is this sour grapes or feedback from folks who haven't yet seen Milan play?

Keep in mind that this is the first season Milan's ran the shotgun spread. It's the first season in a new offense. Early on against Ypsi, Jefferson, and Huron, the offense was fairly simplistic. The bread and butter was (and remains) an inside handoff to Dukes or a fake inside handoff and keeper by Kanitz. QB duties were shared by Aceves (more of a thrower) and Kanitz (more of a runner)–except the Huron game where Aceves was out.

During the next set of games against GI, SMCC, and Flat Rock, Milan has developed its passing game for a more balanced attack. I'm sure the passing game still isn't where coaches think it could be, but it's been a definite factor in all three of these middle schedule wins.

On defense, the linebackers and secondary tackle well. The defensive line has had good and bad moments but seems to stiffen up when needed. The Huron game is a good example of the line having a bad first half and a better second half.

Could they run up against a juggernaut early in the playoffs, a team tougher than any they faced in the Huron League and regular season (@Ypsi Lincoln will be no gimmie, btw)? Sure, but going up against the big boys is what the playoffs are all about. Tighten the chin straps, play your game and see what happens.

But a long playoff run is also about matchups. Perhaps a straight-on power running team might give Milan trouble; maybe one that passes better than Huron League teams could trip the Big Reds up. My hope is that Milan continues to improve in the passing game, stays strong on defense and in the run game, and gets at least one home game for the fans of Milan to celebrate this wild journey by the seniors the right way.

    1. These seniors at Milan are leaders. This lacked in the past. They have talent in many places. Drive. Durability and tenacity. These young men to bring up those around them. Watch what comes of this. It is going to be some great Friday night lights. Go BIG REDS!

  2. With all this negative playoff talk, why play, nobody will make it anywhere, right? I have seen a lot of Huron league teams do fairly well just by great scouting and a good game plan. Its like March madness, one great game plan and a little heart, you never know who you can beat. Give the league some credit. We've beaten Harrison, East Grand Rapids, Constantine and a few other good programs. Some have been awhile, but it can happen. Milan is good, they will go a couple rounds at least. GI might do something, not as good as Milan.
SMCC will go a little ways playing in the lower division.

  3. The league is not the that great this year. I will agree that the bottom teams are better. Milan is playing good ball but if they were playing teams from the past they would not do so well. Flat Rock has made big strides. GI I still feel is over rated. I watched CC beat them down for a half then just lay down and give them the game. Who knows what the heck is going on at Jefferson. Airport is a two man team. Dont use the excuse that the coach was fired. The results were going to be the same. John V is propbably the better of the two anyway. SMCC needs to learn to finish a game.Milan is a little top heavy on Seniors so they better enjoy this year. If they get Orchard Lake St. Mary's they will learn what a top tier program is all about. That game will be very ugly for them. I also agree with the comment that Huron would be a different team if they did not blow that game with CC a few years ago. I have been saying the same thing for two years now.

  4. All FD had to do was take a knee. VICTORY formation. for some reason they threw a pass????? you guys were lucky. Marine city was a tough team think they beat u guys by 50. Marine city lost to zeeland in finals by 50. ZW was crazy good

  5. FD had the game won! Did you watch? I was there. To say GI was lucky to win is an understatement. If you can't admit that than you lose all credibility.

  6. Grosse Ile beat a bunch of nobodies….

Not sure HOW GI beat Douglas. Boy did FD blow that game?

Douglass was a very good team with several dominant players but grosse Ile was better.

It was GI taking advantage of the Douglass mistakes throughout the night. There were touch down saving tackles. The Defense never gave up and the O just kept coming. The end of the game was a highlight reel finish. Kish took complete control of that game at the end by intercepting a pass (bad play called by their coach) and then running it in for 70 yards game winning touchdown the next play.

I think GI beat a Pennfield team that never lost a game at home for like 10 years….

So GI did not play a bunch of nobodies last year. They will be getting ready for another playoff run after next week!
    Go GI

  7. 2:16 poster, Orchard lake St Mary would beat Milan by 70. Yes 70. just pray they don't end up in same REGION or worse yet DISTRICT.

  8. MIlan is a very good football team. They ran over cc this year and beat a very good gi team. They have great running backs a good receiving core and good qb's . How are they not going to make it far in the playoffs? i am not even a Milan fan but i think you saying Milan won't make it far in the playoffs is a dumb thing to say.

  9. Lets sum it up. Huron and Airport looked like simular teams most of the night. Questionable line play, big run plays at times and a pair of good QB's making plays. I saw basic highschool plays not being made and penalities that kill drives. I saw Airport D backs dropping two sure easy interceptions…missed blocking assignments…dropped key pass for a interception and poor play calling/game prep. And if you don't think Airport is shopping for a new head coach your crazy. I don't think players recovered from the Barber mess. There were long time relationships there that got severed…even worse than Redmond leaving. Airport would be a better team with Barber but not 6-0 great.

  10. Okay first off Grosse Ile beat Frederick Douglas which had 3 division I players on the roster. BC Pennfield is a perennial power and Marine City was ranked #1 all season. So take that argument of yours and stick it.

Adrian would have won the Huron League last season and most likely would be in contention every season. The same goes for Chelsea.

MIlan has a very nice team but I don't think they will make it very far in the playoffs. Not like some of the Huron League champs of the past.

  11. Blowouts in the playoffs maybe has a little bit to do with perception. Airport lost to 5-4 Adrian team, Riverview got beat up Chelsea. Grosse Ile beat a bunch of nobodies than got crushed by Marine City.

  12. The league is not down. The only people that say that are the last generation of players who don't want to think that the league is as good as when they played. It happens every season. The league is the same every year. Maybe Milan isn't as good as the best teams the league has seen over the years but I would argue the bottom teams aren't as bad. The league is the same virtually every year. Just a solid Class B type league.

  13. Chris gets what I'm talking about.. The program is a much better now than previously before Kalbfleich. The man has worked hard to turn the program around, and in doing so has come up with 1 playoff berth. Its like Obama, can't fix an economy in 4 years, after a previous 8 year downfall.. well, ya can't fix a football program in 9 years, after 54 seasons of no success.. I give him credit for the turn around, but my only issue is the off play calling.

And I wouldn't say the league is down… I don't get what people say when the league is down? What because CC, Airport, and Milan aren't rolling every team? Or is it because Flat Rock, Huron, and Jefferson [down teams for many past seasons] are contending within league play? Can someone elaborate this for me? I see many talented athletes from all teams, that are capable of turning the game either way.. not down teams.?

  14. 27-52? Is this really his 9th season? That is a .341 winning pct.

Okay, let's say it is. They were 9-72 (.111 winning pct) the previous 9 seasons to that. Huron has a winning pct of .257 prior to him (54 seasons). I would say that is good progress for one of the worst programs in state history. Think about this people. There are currently 592 football programs in the state (according to michigan-football.com). Huron is #579 in winning pct. Eleven of the fourteen programs worse than Huron are relatively new programs that were started from scratch.

  15. Huron is relevant because the rest of the league is down. League has been down for quite some time. Kalbfleisch is 27-52, while it was nice to take Huron to the playoffs a couple of years ago, his record is not something to right home about. He cannot walk on water. I agree with KC, his playcalling is not that great. He has not placed much emphasis on fixing a usually porous defense either.

  16. Huron a contender? I wouldn't go that far. They are still in the bottom half of the league. They aren't an easy win for everyone any longer. I will give u that.

  17. To the 2:28 poster, I never said they got 5+ every play, they averaged 5. Secondly, never said I wanted to coach. Simply stated that some bad play calls and ruined close point games for Huron. If its 3rd and 8, you try to either throw and pick up the first down, or run and utilize that last down in an attempt to get closer to the end zone.. Kalbfleich turned the program around greatly. Look at the difference from when he wasn't coach.. numerous 0-9 teams til Kalbfleich came around, and its gone up since then. Huron is now a contender but the few bad play calls hurt em..

  18. If you lose to a team that goes 9-0 you will get almost 1 whole playoff point. Which basically means you get rewarded for a tough schedule ONLY if you win. . Airport needs to upset Tecumseh. Don't see it.

  19. A couple of thoughts on Huron:

The Huron kicker regularly hits from 40-45 yards in practice. The 36 yarder seems like a good call to me. Airport just made a better play by blocking it.

Huron is actually relevant in the Huron league these days. That wasn't the case for the 20-25 years prior to Kalby's arrival. Huron was traditionally an easy victory for virtually everyone back then.

  20. At 5-4 it's not about who you beat. I'm pretty sure they look at schedule to see who you have lost to. But I'm not for sure. Is Tecumseh going to beat Airport?

  21. If Huron was getting 5 yards per run, why was it third and eight after two straight run plays??? get your resume together KC because Kalbfleisch is going to be an administrator soon and we can all see what you can do with the Huron program.

    1. 34-21 a little into the 3rd quarter leaves a little doubt & is not a blowout. Riverview then allowed a kickoff return, on top of not stopping CC one time all night. Subs were not in, at least not qb and backs.
This team has not been able to make any stops this year. Very lackluster effort on defense.

  22. Huron cooks up creative ways to lose? Excuse me, but Huron has had numerous great athletes the past few years come through the football program and play their hearts out til the final whistle.. they don't go into games intending the lose.. if the players could make the play calls, you'd see closer calls. I, personally only having played 1 game under Kalbfleich, can't say anything. But from a sidelines pov he gets frazzled and makes idiotic calls.. you practice 4 days of the week so you can see what your kids are capable of. If the kicker can't hit a 34 yard fg in practice, don't try it in real game. If your backs are hitting 5+ yard runs in practice, take that to the game and let them run it. Silly play calls, screw them out of a win.. Hurons run game the past 4 years has had big back, who can break for big yards and move up field.. But Kalbfleich doesn't utilize it in.well needed situations and takes to the air.. why, I've no idea. But just because they lost by 1 point to cc in 09 doesn't mean it ruined the whole program. Kids who are on varsity now didn't partake in that game so it didn't/wouldn't effect them. So that's a shot in the dark to say that 1 game, 3 years ago is hurting the program now. If I remember correctly the 2010 v squad came out hiring the next season and went to play offs.. the only team in school history.. but that cc game effected them..? Lol

  23. The Airport I see right now does not resemble the Airport that I played for IMHO. But the coach got fired early in the year it must be nice to have a convenient excuse if they do not make the playoffs.

  24. 10:21…I suppose if that fiasco was a basketball game people would talk.

If Coach G and S aren't literally having dry heaves over that D performance, Chris is going to have to substitute "toughest" with "softest" in subtitle.

  25. Regarding Huron: I think it is time that the coaching staff starts believing that the team is talented enough to stand in there and compete without having to make crazy decisions. In my opinion, the coaches still coach as if the team would be lucky to win or is lucky to be in the game at the end. Going for two when an extra point would send it to overtime against a pourous defense (Riverview this year), onside kicks with 45 seconds left in the first half after scoring a big touchdown and having momemtum at halftime (Airport two years ago), fake punts in their own territory early in games (Milan last year I believe). It's just my observation, and I don't see all the games, but I believe that the Huron team can simply line up and play with these teams and win their fair share. No need to get cute because the team isn't talented like the past….

  26. I have noticed all season that Airport just doesn't have it this year. No run blocking, no pass protection (seems like they could implement better pass plays also), and their defense is flat out bad. But most important-no intensity and not much discipline.

They should make playoffs even at 5-4 but they will probably be hammered in first round with a tough opponent.

  27. Sorry-I meant to say I agree with you about the 3rd down call. I don't agree with the play call when Huron was getting 5 yards at will.

  28. @12:56- I have wondered all year why he continually attempts that pass on 3rd and long inside their 30 yard line. Look back at many of the games this year and how many times that has been called. Last night it was called at least 3 times possibly 4 with the lone completion for the touchdown. Would love to see that little bubble screen or the crossing TE that they scored on earlier. They stop you short the odds of picking up the 1st down on 4th & short are pretty good with the way we have been running the ball.

I'm not complaining about the play calling. You know the receiver is on an island w/ man coverage and at a different level it makes sense. In HS, unless you have a kid like Stockard a few years back the odds of completion are against you.

Just seems that play is the go to play on 3rd & long inside opponents half of the field and the #'s don't make sense when you know you are going for it on 4th down.

All in all the kids showed some guts last night coming back and getting them in position to win the game. Punch in one of those early possessions and I think it is a different game.

  29. The posters this week have a little angst!!

Nice WIN for GI…guess we gotta pick on the fans now??…bring it!

OK Airhead, what gives with coming after me with the wrong score last week!! I waited a whole week and didn't see any apologies though, sooooo predictable those jetblast fans.

Got a bowl of crow here for carport, just respond…."I took a bite" and we're all good, I'll forgive you 🙂
Note to Air: If that squeeker last night is your "bounce back" as you "MAKE THE PLAYOFFS"….You're clearly smokin' left handed cigarettes.

SMCC/View…classic case who scores the most TD's wins!! Either; a)neither team had a D at all (which has proven true at View) or, b)View O speed showed up. I suspect the latter as SMCC D does have a couple D studs.

Milan is rolling for sure…they have proven just about everyone wrong. Nice team with speed!

10:04…don't feel too bad about your beating cause you deserve it! You're on the right track except for TWO MAJOR flaws, "KIDS" & "TEAM"! Once the diploma slaps the palm…HAVE AT EM as adults then!!
Now if you would have gone down the path of criticizing all this "everyones a winner"…"trophies for all" garbage out there in PC land, you may have found a supporter or 2, ME INCLUDED. Learning how to loose and deal with adversity is JUST AS, IF NOT MORE IMPORTANT than the latter….just sayin'.

  30. Chris.. thank you for not letting people bash kids on here. That is not the purpose. I love that when I get home on Friday night I can jump on here and find out about the other games. Keep up the great work. I believe you said that you were attending the FR-MIlan game. What did you think? We had a rough first half. Those FR kids are huge.

  31. Milan kept getting stronger as the game wore on.

We saw some of their excellent pass game. What is their pass completion percentage on the season?

They look like a playoff-ready team.

If they can fix a few things in their special teams, they will be really tough to beat.

FR played a tough first half. Their program is looking up. They will win more games.

This league is right where it should be… Milan and Gross Ile 1 & 2, and a scramble for #3.

Can Milan go 2-0 in the next two weeks?

  32. Was anyone wondering why the Huron coach didn't stick with the 5 yds per carry in the last few minutes of the game? Ended up 3rd and runable and went for the corner of the endzone. And why kick? Gave up on your run game like AP coaches give up on their passing game.

    1. I agree with the 3rd down call and going for the end zone. Huron was getting 5 yards a carry the whole game. But there was questionable play calling from both sides. Airport had to give up on passing. Couple drops and a bouncer off a facemask that resulted in an interception. Not much pass protection either.

  33. 10:04

Can't believe your going there. If your a parent of an athelete you would realize that we just don't do that here. We'll take care of our own.

  34. really a comment comparing this blog to Joseph Stalin. That is a little extreme. Anyone who feels the need to bash kids is a sad little person.

  35. Hurons rediculous loss to CC in 2009 at their place just killed that program. They haven't caught a break since. I root for em. If its close… They will lose. I think if they didn't blow it in 09 we would see a different program.

  36. Kids? the tykes who play tag in the corner at Mittlestat field are, I am not so sure about the 16-18 year old young men who play on the field.

  37. ^agreed…..thank you for providing this blog for us. It is the best place to get scores and information about Huron league football. Thank you!

  38. GI good team, hits the line running hard. Shot-gun on every play. Jefferson moved the ball on them very well, faultered in the red zone. If Jefferson could have finished in the red zone, it would have been a close game.
Very puzzled by lack of fans on GI side. Not much support maybe 100 fans total.
Also, very bush for GI to punch in a touchdown with 57 seconds left up 35-16. That will be remembered. Otherwise GI great team, very fast.

  39. It is a shame that selfish kids who need to be called out are not allowed to do so here, Chris is everything that is wrong with society. The censoring on this website would make Joseph Stalin and his NKVD agents blush.
