Huron League Thoughts and Questions

Nice win for Jefferson to end the league season.

When was the last time SMCC finished with a losing record?

Riverview made me look foolish this season.

Congrats to Airport for running the league schedule.

When was the last time Milan finished last in a league?

Grosse Ile better not look past Dundee.

Both Flat Rock and Huron disappointed a little this season but both should be better next season..

I’m convinced that the league was down this year.

Airport and Riverview need to avoid Thurston in the playoffs.

Grosse Ile could win a few games if they avoid Crockett.

Any coaching changes coming in the league?

  1. random thought…best yr league overall….i think in 04 for sure riverview gross ile and smcc went to the finals. 4 teams made playoffs and probably 1 of the most underacheiveing team in jefferson 04 class.alot of talent threw the whole league..that richardville kid could run..

  2. They have to draw a line somewhere. Just happens that view and air are close to class A. You get more points for beating a 7 win class b team than a 3 win class A team. So a team got more points fir beating view than they did beating milan.

The 256 teams that make the playoffs are then divided into 32 team divisions based on enrollment. Thus 8 divisions of 32.

  3. So Mr. Huronleaguefootball,

if what Mr. bn said is true, which I'm not challenging by the way I'm just curious, is it also true that they use the "class" system to determine points, then switch over to the Division system for the playoffs? That would seem inconsistent. Is there a reason for this approach? It would seem to be a distinct advantage for some and a disadvantage for others. It seems unfair that someone would get more pp for beating Milan than say Riverview, they essentially have the same student population. Why not just stay with the one or the other? Would seem to be more fair. You could still award extra points for a larger school.

I'm sure there is a reason, although I wouldn't put it past the MHSAA to come up with some cock-a-mamy formula based on tradition. When we grew up there were only the "class" designations. You could still let every team qualify like now, but I think it would be fairer to stick with one or the other. Just IMHO.

Oh well, learn something new everyday. Thanx.

  4. It works like this. Classification is based on enrollment in February 2011. The schools are split into classes for 2011-12 school year based on that enrollment. Top 25% are Class A, next 25% are class B and so on. This year class A is 952 and above. Class B is 466-951. Class C is 216-465 and class D is 215 and under.

  5. Mr. bn,

I'm not sure how the point system works. But I just talked with someone at Milan today and they told me, today, that their enrollment is a little over 900. Maybe their mistaken, but I would assume they would know. Of course count day just passed, so maybe they've had a drop off from your figures.

When I was looking on the MHSAA website, they had the listing of the schools within their divisions and they are as had been outlined earlier. Although, I was looking for some info. under the Wrestling heading and just happened across that list. Not sure if it would be different for wrestling, but maybe.

My question then is how is the "class" determined? I thought it all had to do with student population. Thanx for the info.

I might be standing corrected, but I'm still not convinced, LOL!!

  6. yea lets put ida and dundee in and toss out 2 playoff teams… do your homework next time before you post. and stop hatin on the island

  7. the league seems down to this old huron league watcher. but year in and out still one of the best leagues in the state with playoff teams from 3 or more schools. proud to say i played in that league many years ago.congrates to airport for league champs. gi having great season too, riverview is done after first game in playoffs maybe airport also. seen a question about who was best back in league…my opinion it was brewer from huron and no iam not from huron. and yes the coach at fr needs to step down the kids have lost repect for him and the parents cant take any more of blosser right kamin left and knoch up the middle. throw the ball only when your out of the game and only to mink on a five and out when you need fifteen…just sayin

  8. Hey BN:

Well said about the coach's onus and responsibility that they carry. No coach tries to lose and in high school, if you are putting in the time it equates to pennies per hour.
These guys are not in the NFL or college. Most coaches today put in a year round effort for their sport and get paid nothing for most fo the year, especially football coaches, who run their weight rooms all year, conditioning, virtually their entire summer is consumed with football activities, and that does not include fundraising activities, etc. etc. etc.

When I say the league is down, it is no knock on any coach. I know for a fact, that the guy who goes 0-9 works as hard as the guy who makes the play-offs every year.
Many of these coaches are the only role model that many young men have. So lay off them and tip your hat to them. They deserve more than we usually give them!!!

  9. "Well you may be right about the class thing. But in talking with the Milan folks they only have just over 900 students there. Which should make them a Class B school.

But really the alphabetical classifications really are outdated. Going by the numerical divisions now used they are a D 2 school as are Riverview, Airport, Huron and Jefferson. GI and FR are D 3, while SMCC is a D 6. The numerical designations are more accurate, at least for football purposes."

    October 19, 2011 9:43 AM

Again sir you are a tad bit off.

The Classes A-B-C-D are not outdated whatsoever. They are used to determine playoff points during the regular season. The divisions 1-8 only come into play once the regular season is over.

    For you knowledge, this year, Milan(1016 students) is Class A and D3Riverview(928) is Class B and D3, Airport(920) is Class B and D3, Huron(841) is Class B and borderline D3-4, Jefferson(724) is Class A and D4, Grosse Ile(674) is class B and D4, Flat Rock(569) is class B and D5 and SMCC(420) is class C and D6.

  11. Its about expectations 11:19 poster, not where you finished last year compared to this year. There is such a turnover in HS football from year to year that it is sometimes silly to compare one year's team to another.

Only 2 teams finished above expectations(Airport and Riverview). All other teams finished at(GI) or below expectations. Huron, FR, SMCC and Jefferson for sure, without a doubt did not live up to expectations this year. Milan in some people's eyes(not mine), were going to compete for the crown. So they would also be included in the underperformed list.

I never like to say the league is down per say but I will say that more than half the league did not live up to expectations.

Let's remember one thing though folks. Coaching HS football, in today's world, is a very tough job. You are the face of your community many times and are looked upon to hopefully lift your community with a winning football team. That is a quite a burden and responsibility. So no matter how your team finished this year, if you see your coach walking around, give him a hearty handshake and thank him for the work he puts in(or any coach for any sport for that matter). I am sure no matter how little a thing you think that might be, I bet to that coach it would mean a ton. Especially if he had down year.

  12. I have to comment on the LCAA vs. the Huron League notes:
Stop the madness. Yes the Huron is down this year, but is still 10 times more powerful than the LCAA. You take the best players from the LCAA and play them against the best in the Huron League? You would have a running clock by halftime and about 6 trips to the emergency room. And that is any and every year.
No team in the LCAA takes a weekly beating and hard hitting like any team in the Huron LEague. Half the kids on any LCAA roster would have a tough time playing a complete season if they played a Huron League schedule.
Stay of the BLOG, go start your own somewhere in the Irish Hills or something.

  13. The league is not down. Evidence…

    1. Flat Rock won more games than last year ….FR = UP

    2. Huron's season last year was an anomaly. This year they are where they normally finish. Huron = Even

    3. Milan is down from where they have finished in previous years. Milan = Down

    4. Riverview is definitely UP

    5. SMCC is definitely DOWN, but it's not fair to compare them to a group that was a 2 time state runner up.

    6. GI is slightly UP from previous years.

    7. Jefferson is slightly DOWN from previous years.

    8. Airport is league champs for first time since 08. And they are 1 year removed from a coaching change.. Air = UP or at very least even.

4 UP, 3 Down, 1 Even…League was fine this year

  14. …………Hoskins got rid of 6 coaches from Robb's staff and changed to a singal back offense. Was he the right guy for that program?

    October 18, 2011 1:48 PM

Hey is that a new type of defense imported from India – I believe it's "single" – not "singal"

LOL – Good luck to all teams in week 9 and to Airport, Riverview and Grosse Ile in playoffs!

  15. Give Milan a few years and I think they'll be contending for a Huron League title again. It was a rough start but look for great improvement next season

  16. ida and dundee would do nothing in huron league, grosse ile beat ida the last two years and those gi teams finished in bottom half of huron league. The 0-9 flatrock team went into overtime with ida and smcc beat dundee 55-0 last year. lchaa league members,STAY OFF OUR BLOG!

  17. While the league appears to be down, a district title or 2 might change people's minds. Airport is capable of getting to round 3 if they don't draw Thurston in district play, as is GI if they don't draw Crockett in rounds 1 or 2. EM

  18. "bloody" is used as a intensifier, as in "That was a bloody good game!"

"nutter" is a slang word used frequently in Australia and England that means crazy person, similar to the way we say "That guy is nuts"

No filth here my friend. The only filth I see is in your dirty little mind !!!!!

  19. "CP", I guess that is what you are going by. I preferred BN though.
I was cautiously optimistic this year. The last 3 years there has been improvements. The 4 years before that I thought were horrible and I was surprised when they won. It has nothing to do with being a fan of the team. If I was a FlatRock or Jefferson fan I would not think that my team would finish high. So you did well and said that Riverview would do well, but since I am a fan I am not allowed to say that???

I do not get your sarcasm. What's the deal? Are you from Monroe county? Must be an Airport fan.

  20. FYI enrollment per MHSAA:
    Milan 1016
    Riverview 928
    Airport 920
    Huron 841
    Jefferson 724
    GI 674
    Flat Rock 569
    SMCC 432

Milan has gotten bigger every year. However, in football this season it has gotten steadily worse each week. Hoskins got rid of 6 coaches from Robb's staff and changed to a singal back offense. Was he the right guy for that program?

Anyone looking for a coaching change at Flat Rock is kidding themselves. Why would the school fire someone who was coach of the year two years ago? Plus it's not band or theatre, so does FR administration really care? Plus, they are a class C (public school)team in an A/B league. The best they can hope for is 5-4 because they will always get totally outmanned four times a year. This is the era of ballooning enrollments like Milan, Airport, and Riverview. It is stuck in the 500 student range playing schools with 800-1000 students.
Finally, Coach P is going to see these Juniors all the way through. This was "his group." Then he will leave when the shelves are totally bear (see his JV).

    October 18, 2011 12:28 PM

I have to disagree with you. Just because some one wins coach of the year, doesn't mean he should be retained for a specific number of years. From what I can tell FR has had a losing season 7 out of the last 8 years. 2007 they went 5-4. That may have been when the coach won the COY award. But he is 9-26 through last weekend since. I didn't say I was looking for a change, just that I think one is necessary.

There are NO A division teams in this league. There are B/C/D. GI and FR are C. View, Airport, Jefferson, Huron, Milan I believe are all B. SMCC is D. The fact that they choose to play in this league is their decision. So it can't be used as an excuse.

I don't mean this to come across as a criticism or as a FR hater. I'm not. It's just, well you can see those kids just get down after their second or third loss. You can see it in their faces. It's like; "here we go again, another loss". I mean COY or not, God love him. But it's time. Sorry.

  23. Thoughts and Concepts:

Great win for the Bears. Both teams woefully down this year, but Cisco always gets his kids up for "The Cathlics" as he calls them.

Last time SMCC had a losing season was Jack's first year, 1998, maybe was 1-8 that year?

Riverview surprised many people, however, remember how down this league is this year. Average team in a below average league, period.

Congrats Airport. See, there is life after Redmond. Great job, but will not do much in the play-offs, Sorry!

Still not sure what happened at Milan. When Robb left he took the Ypsi connection with him. Many of Milan's top players in the past 10 years are not from Milan or it's school district, better get em before SMCC does!

Huron was a disappointment this year, alot of expectation this year after making the playoffs last year and over 1,000 kids in that school.
Flat Rock, hey they went 0-9 last year with most games a running clock. This year 2 to 3 wins with many close losess, that is huge improvement and they have their core players back next year, so give the Rams a break, they should not even be playing in this league with their school size.

I have never seen the league as bad as this year, ever. I have never seen it when 5 teams down right are bad and 3 are average, Never!

I will be very surprised if anyone wins a district this year. The entire region is down for football, maybe excluding Wyandotte. I am actually concerned about football in general around these parts anymore.

Not sure of any coaching changes looming, however the FR coach, from what I hear is a very dedicated guy, who has lost his way with the kids and tries to run the entire show himself. That does not add up to a winning combination. Only what I have heard, do not know the guy personally.

Good luck to everyone this week!

  24. Craig M… everyone thinks their team will finish high. You are a view fan and thought they would do well… nice job.

The 9:53 poster is entirely clueless and I will not respond to that nonsense nor should anyone else.

    -crazy person

  25. I have been quiet the past couple of weeks, BUT this is where I thought that Riverview would finish. They have been showing signs of improvement over the past 3 season and it was about time that it has paid off. The Pirates should be at the top of the league the next couple of years.

The league down stuff I think is total CRAP and I always will.

And as far as tossing people out: If you Monroe county people do not like playing us than LEAVE. Last time that I checked, Flat Rock, Huron, Riverview and GI are all in Wayne county. There are 3 teams in Monroe county. We do not mind playing you. But apparently you cannot handle LOSING to us.

SITOFN: Where was the wind last Friday night? I am sad to say that i missed the game, heard it was a good one.

  26. Dundee and Ida would most likely beat everyone in the league except for Airport, and when SMCC is having a good year. Just like how they are gunna run the table on GI this week. But they recently added new teams to their league, so no way they would switch leagues now.

  27. Anonymous said…
Dundee is a tough bunch of corn eating farm boys. GI better put away the cake and get ready for some hard hitting football. I'd like to see Dundee and Ida join the league, and toss out GI and View.

    October 18, 2011 8:30 AM

Wow that's pretty harsh! But you know what, that would make it easier for those teams left in. Their geographic locations would be more conducive to the rest of the league.

And, GI & Riverview would be a better fit in the Downriver League. But I'm not sure either would match up well with AP, Southgate, Wyandotte in football. But it would be fun, and all other sports would at least be competitive, as they already play all these schools in all other sports anyway. And would save those districts money on trans. costs.

Not a bad idea, just a little harsh on the delivery. "…..and toss out GI and View." LOL!

  28. That was exactly my thinking BN. There are some great players in this league but overall I thought the overall quality of the league was down from last season. With that said, I think the quality of the league should be back up next season with the amount of young players contributing this season.

  29. Sorry if I offended anyone for using BN's full handle. That certainly wans't my intention but I'm sure the kids have access to all sorts of filth on the internet.

As for explaining the term Bloody Nutter feel free to post your explanation. I will post it along with your name.

As for BN being banned for life, I just can't do that. He is one of the few people who visits this terrible site

  30. October 18, 2011 8:30 AM

That's a great idea. Toss out 2 of the 3 best teams in the league and add two teams that would most likely be at the bottom of the league every year. Sounds like a great idea.

  31. Nice win for Jefferson to end the league season.

Yes it was. On any give Friday.

When was the last time SMCC finished with a losing record?

Frankly I'm not crying over it. They win A LOT. They'll be back on top next year. Their a young team and have a good JV group coming up.

Riverview made me look foolish this season.

They did all of us. Who knew? Stergalas has appeared to turned the ship around but it still comes down to talent and who's willing to work.

Congrats to Airport for running the league schedule.

They did a nice job. I think the game with Riverview would have been better later in the season. The View noticably improved as the season went on.

When was the last time Milan finished last in a league?

    Unknown

Grosse Ile better not look past Dundee.

Well, they shouldn't look past ANYBODY, look at SMCC. They had a nice run but they're gonna want to head to the playoffs on a positive. If they can finish strong they may still get a home game at 7-2.

Both Flat Rock and Huron disappointed a little this season but both should be better next season.

I'd say yes on Huron, not so much Flat Rock.

I'm convinced that the league was down this year.

No Question. But the three playoff teams have a chance of making a mark for the league in the playoffs. I think all of them have a good shot of getting past the first round. After that, I'm not real confident.

Airport and Riverview need to avoid Thurston in the playoffs.

Well, yeah it would be nice to avoid the tough teams but if their in your bracket, then their in your bracket.

Grosse Ile could win a few games if they avoid Crockett.

    See above.

Any coaching changes coming in the league?

Don't know of any pending, but one that should is the Flat Rock coach. He's a really nice guy but it's time for someone there to come in and take it in a new direction. You can't be that consistently underachieving year-after-year with out a common thread. No matter how challenging things are, at some point the pendulum HAS to swing in your favor by just shear averages. They need someone to bring in fresh ideas. Problem is he's a teacher and teachers always get first right of refusal. He needs to step down and let someone else with a new "schpeel" come on so they boys can hear a new message and new voice.

  32. The league was not down. By saying that, your calling every player on every team a scrub. Just because CC got there butts kicked all over Monroe/Wayne Counties, dosen't mean the league was down. That's just a cop out excuse. These kids played just has good and just as hard as any season on the books. Shame on you for even suggesting it.

    October 18, 2011 8:22 AM

lol, wow did he say anything about the kids not playing hard? When 2 league powers have BAD years, I think it is fair to say the league was down a bit. Huron and FR were also expected to be better than they were. GI and Airport finished about where we thought they would. Only View surprised some with their 7 wins to this point.

So I would say the league played a bit under its expectations this year minus View and Air. GI finished where expected. So that makes 5 of 8 teams that finished under expectations. That to me makes a down league.

  33. Dundee is a tough bunch of corn eating farm boys. GI better put away the cake and get ready for some hard hitting football. I'd like to see Dundee and Ida join the league, and toss out GI and View.

  35. The blog name "Bloody Nutter" is offensive. Why post filth on a site where school kids have access? Why don't you just explain to everyone what a "Bloody Nutter" is? Didn't think so. That guy needs to be banned for life.

  36. Can i get a little love Chris, I told u view would good and Milan horrible. I also said cc would win league. Hey I'm human.
