Huron League Thoughts and Questions

Coffee or Bacon?

Big rivalry game over at Navarre Field this week.

Jefferson or Flat Rock doomed for the basement this week?

Grosse Ile has another shot at ending a losing streak against Milan.

Who is the best RB in the league?

Either Huron or Riverview will take a step towards a possible playoff birth this week.

Jesse Hoskins will do good things over at Milan.

Best defensive player in the league?

Looks like the fans agree that Giarmo is the best coach in the league.

Should I make this a private fee based site next season with exclusive interviews and better coverage?

SMCC cost me a McNasty Burger for lunch last week.

Its nice to see the GI staff took my advice and used their running game to help their defense. :)I

  1. Airport's rival has always been CC I graduated in the mid 80'sand we were rivals then. Sure we had others, then it was also Huron, but always CC….

  2. What year are you talking when Airport hated Jefferson??? When I was in school Airport and Jefferson football players were all friends. I personally think everyone's rival is SMCC. Everyone wants to beat the best!!

  3. Poster 11:12 is exactly right. I remember playing football at Airport in middle school and our biggest rival was Jefferson. CC was just a game to us but we all hated Jefferson. Then it changed in high school.

  4. rivalries change, competitiveness will do that, you can have more than one rival, cc vs airport is definetly a rivalry, it has gotten nasty over the last couple years.

Jefferson is still rivals with cc, nobody is saying it isnt, its just that cc vs airport has had more league title implications the last couple of years, more so than jefferson.

  5. Why did Giarmo buy all those copies of the monroe evening news last year as motivation for his team. I always thought that since ron montri and the evening news loved giarmo and cc so much that they would just send him as many free papers as he would like.

  6. I played for Riverview in the Mid 90's, and we could not have cared about Grosse Ile. We wanted to beat Gabriel Richard. And with Coach Lessner at the helm we ALWAYS, ALWAYS wanted to beat CC, that was his big game. There can be a change in a rival. Riverview does not even play Richard any more in football. It is like the Red Wings/Avalanche rivalry for example. The Wings rivals are Chicago and the Maple Leafs. And not they only play the Leafs one time per year. A rivalry can change. It can be a short term deal too. I do not see why so many people get offended when someone says that the current SMCC/Airport football game has become a rivalry. It will be ok folks. Want to talk about a long time opponent, Riverview has been playing Huron since the 50's.

  7. Mc Nasty Burger with cheese, hold the with onion hold the lettuce, bring me some onion rings, and fried pickles! Hopefully we have some open gym time after that meal chris!! GL to all Huron League Teams, stay healthy!

    -The Ole ball coach

  8. OK, time for me to chime in, cant resist.

Jefferson is CC's long time cross town rival. Doubt that will ever change.

Recently(10-12 years) Airport has slid in as CC's biggest competition for the league. Thus I can see why Chris and other would say they are rivals and that does make sense.

Being that I graduated from CC some 20+ years ago I just hate to say anyone else is CC's rival other than Jefferson. It was JAMMED in our heads BEAT JEFFERSON!! We knew all the players names and would YELL them during sprints. During my day the big names were Moss, Rodnicki, Cisco, Sweat, Cvengross. They were damn good. Actually beat them twice in the same year in my day '87. That was expecially nice!

I will agree however that nowadays Airport is CC's biggest competition and if in some folks eyes that makes them rivals, then so be it. I wont argue it.

  9. 10:57 Love that stuff. If I was a coach that the stuff I would be doin. Kids go up and down so easily at this age. Good coaches are so important. Maybe this year we'll have the Jones, Shumake, Potcova and Donnelly quad on the front page for Jack to sweat over?

  10. Even though you are Anonymous you have still embarrassed yourself…greatly. If Jefferson put the effort into every game as they did into their "rivalry" maybe they would come out with a couple wins this season.

    " Don't forget jeferson is…"

Ahhh so he is a Jefferson student I see…

  11. My son was a senior starter on last years team, and I can tell you that Airport was most likely more of a rivalry than Jefferson in resent years.

Remember when the MEN did a front page article on Mays just before the CC-Air game last year?

Giarmo bought several papers that day and had them laying all over the locker room when the kids came in for practice!

That fired them up a bit.

  12. My wife will say I'm stubborn too. The readers will say they enjoy my passion.

I wish we could have debated this on live video or something. I would have looked good in front of the cameras and you would have looked silly with a bag over your anonymous head.:)

I have had fun today. Look for previews tomorrow and Thursday folks.

  13. Stubborn one you are Chris.

    Big game sure. Rivalry, no.

Cc is 1-2, it would be a big game if flat Rock came a calling.

And by your definition of rivalry cc and Huron would be rivals. Now doesn't that just seem silly?

  14. I guess ND/Michigan isn't a rivalry game. OSU is Michigan's rival. The ND/Michigan rivalry is just frivolous and silly although 114,000 people thought differently on Saturday.

  15. Am I being a tool? I am stating facts. Nothing more.

I also have more insight into this matter than Chris does. Chris owns the blog and we all love it but that doesn't mean he is always right. I am just giving another mans view and I think that is ok. NOBODY AT CC WILL TELL YOU AIRPORT IS A RIVAL. THEY WILL TELL YOU JEFFERSON!! It has been that way forever and it is fun and important to the players.

You can only play up the rival bit for one team to do otherwise would seem frivolous and silly.

  16. How many rivals can a high school team that plays 9 games have? One is plenty and by the numbers and geographics, Jefferson is cc's.

Airport and cc have had some big games as of late no doubt but please believe me when I tell you Jefferson is considered cc's rival by the coaches. It is played up all week in practice. Cisco, sandersen and giarmo(who played for sandersen). It goes way back Chris. Something a non bear or falcon would never understand. Obviously

  17. By your definition of the word rival, everyone is everyones rival, and that is just silly. The definition I chose is the one that pertains to our arguement.

Don't forget jeferson is a Monroe school, which adds to the rivalry.

They have played in the playoffs vs cc in 1987.

During airports best and only good years, Jefferson beat cc more times than airport did. Not sure where or how you can claim airport is the bigger rival. You certainly can't use numbers, only opinion and you know what those are like. You r entitled to your opinion.

  18. Your original premise was Airport/SMCC is hardly a rivalry. You are wrong it is a rivalry and a big one at that. You never proved it wasn't. You didn't care to comment on that point either. You simply rambled elsewhere.

You also used historical numbers for one team but not for another to back your argument. I simply pointed out if you compare complete historical #'s that your argument has a hole in it. The teams are basically the same in the W/L column against SMCC. You chose to ignore that and go to the last 13 years.

The fact is, SMCC has dominated both programs over the years but both schools are big rivals.

As for your definition of rival you used Websters #2. Here is Websters #1 definition of rival: a person who is competing for the same object or goal as another, or who tries to equal or outdo another; competitor.

I could argue that the longer that teams have played and how many games have been played would make the bigger rivalry but that wasn't my original premise or yours.

So how long have Airport and SMCC been playing? How about Jefferson/SMCC?

SMCC/Jefferson started in the 1968 season. SMCC/Airport played in the 1954 season.

Jefferson has played SMCC/CC 43 times. Airport has played SMCC/CC 48 times

You can ramble all you want but the fact is you lost the argument based on your original premise.

Game, set, and match! You hear the fat lady singing? Of course you do and so does everyone else.

    Good Day!

  19. You didn't own anything. What is Jeffersons record against Airport during those years? 4-10. Airport has won 10 of the last 11 meetings as well.

Jeff/SMCC game is just a line em up and run the same play over and over.

  20. You heard right 2:34 poster. The back you speak of is Adam Donnelly, he was the the top back on JV last year, 2nd string this year. Jefferson fans should worry less about rivalries and more on avoiding the league basement. EM

  21. Did everyone miss the coffee brewer combo!

Some bacon in the pan and the coffee brewer running….Saturday morning and a chance to read up on our beloved HL Football results.

It can't get any better than that….we'll maybe.

    SITOFN

  22. Isn't this fun? I was hoping people would really go with the Bacon/Coffee rivalry but it's not a rivalry at all. One is a cured meat that is usually fried and the other is roasted.

  23. i love when chris gets rolling.

anyway my weekly thoughts on your thoughts.

Bacon, yumm my mouth is watering right now.

flat rock doomed for basement, most likely, quite sad really.

Grosse ile should end that streak, grosse ile needs to play 4 full quarters, dont let up on milan. They gave huron a scare apparently

Preliminary indications is that Kish is the best back in the league right now. His numbers are good and people have good things to say. It's still early yet but he appears to be numero uno.

Huron Riverview, jeez who do you pick for this one. I got the view, although this game is a perfect for the flip a coin variety

jesse hoskins will do good things, in time. I give him a few more years not too mention a few more ypsi recruits, he should do just fine.

who knows, has any defensive players stepped up and separated themselves from the pack like weclowski did.

Best coach argument is something I used to argue valiantly about, but now i think its just dumb. Most of the coaches in this league are good, they have there good moments and bad moments.

NO NO NO NO NO NO…NO FEES PLEASE.

    McNasty burger ugh cholesterol

I guess if you dont have to throw, than why do so?

  24. Did I hear correctly that Airport has a 6-3 205 running back? Just shy of 100 yards in the pouring rain at Flatrock. Came in to cover an injury. What they saving this dude for?

  25. Your biggest rival is typically that team who you have the most to gain by beating. Seems as though the Bears on here are looking for something to hold onto for 2011, ie. "yah were 2-7, but we almost beat SMCC!"

This week; I like Grosse Ile, the Jets, the Pirates and da Bears. Most competitive week in the Huron League for years!

  26. "So your not skewing the numbers. Good for you! Still picking them in your favor but I'll play along. "

seriously?? How am I picking them in my favor? I have chosen Airport's ONLY good years!

and I quote: "During Airport's BEST years '98 til present they are 6-7 vs SMCC. While Jefferson during that same time frame is 9-4." ok 8-5

My favor huh? hmmmm, if you say so, it's your blog.

  27. I guess you could call Airport a rival for about a 5 years span but the last few years even that has gone by the wayside… 1-6 vs SMCC since the '03 season.

  28. "Why don't you focus on your rivalry with FR this week?"

huh? Dont follow you there Chris.

"Does Michigan only have one rivalry? No, they don't. They have three. OSU, MSU and Notre Dame."

I will give you OSU and ND. Not MSU, not yet anyway.

Are the Redsox the Yankees rival? ANSWER: nobody rivals the Yankees. Nobody even comes close to their success.

And again Chris, when the goals go up for SMCC prior to the start of the season.. BEAT JEFFERSON is one of them. Airport is nowhere on the board.

  29. I think Jefferson will get by Flat Rock this week but that will be their last win.

I haven't seen G.I. but Milan didn't look to good. If G.I. plays 4 quarters they will beat Milan.

Huron will run over Riverview this week.

look for Airport to run all over CC also. CC is just not that good and has no speed.

Keep it free Chris. Your doing a good thing here.

    cn

  30. During those same years('98-present) Jefferson has a 5-5 record in the playoffs while Airport holds a 6-12 record.

If you want to stretch it back just 5 season earlier Jefferson would hold a 9-7 record in the playoffs while Airport would still be a dismal 6-12.

Since '83 Jefferson has won the league 7 times while Airport has won it 6(albeit those 6 have come since '98). Jefferson has won 5 since '92.

  31. So your not skewing the numbers. Good for you! Still picking them in your favor but I'll play along.

    What was your original quote?

    I'll share it with you.
"SMCC has only one rivalry, JEFFERSON! Airport is 9-35 vs SMCC. That is hardly a rival."

Does Michigan only have one rivalry? No, they don't. They have three. OSU, MSU and Notre Dame.

Does SMCC have more than one big rival? Yes, they do! Airport and Jefferson. Ask any Falcon who their rivals are in football. They will say Jefferson and Airport. Who is more relavent rival today? AIRPORT. So this week is a big rivalry game at Navarre Field.

Why don't you focus on your rivalry with FR this week?

  32. My predictions for this week.
GI over Milan. Not sure what is going on over at Milan, but GI's O looks pretty good. GI by a bunch.
Huron over the View. Huron is average in a down year for the league. The View has not looked very good at all.Huron by 2 scores.
Airport over SMCC in a close one. Airport has more size and talent, but SMCC still has Jack to motivate them. Airport by 2 scores.
Flat Rock over Jefferson. FR is not as bad as they appear in a down year for the league. Jefferson is as bad as they have been in many years. FR in a close one at home.

I compare the league games this year to the Michigan/ Notre Dame game. Very exciting game between to schools that are not top 25 caliber this year.

  33. I would argue that Jefferson is the bigger rivalry. However, Airport is the most relevant rivalry.

Also, it was great to see Huron finally take down a team that they couldn't get over the hump against. Congrats to the Chiefs.

    -Mr. HuronLeagueMan

  34. from 1983 Jefferson is 13-16 vs SMCC while Airport is 7-21. You tell me who is the better rivalry?

During Airport's BEST years '98 til present they are 6-7 vs SMCC. While Jefferson during that same time frame is 9-4. You tell me who is the biggest rival by those numbers Chris.

I promise you this, beating Jefferson means more to the Falcons than beating the Jets. It has ALWAYS been that way and ALWAYS will be that way.

    Your turn!

  35. Really? Not a rivalry? You use the all time series for Airport/SMCC yet you use a selected series for Jefferson/SMCC. How convenient. Why don't you add the 15 straight losses before that to the loss column for Jefferson? So how does 13-31 look? That is what I thought. Sorry, you asked for it!

SMCC's biggest rival right now in football is Airport whether you want to believe it or not.

  36. CC (in league play) is only giving up 13 a game.. problem is they are only scoring 13 a game. Like I said the D will be solid but the O will take a bit to get moving. I doubt this will be the week however. I expect a pretty low scoring game. Airport 20 CC 14.

    -bn

  37. GI passing game is not dead, just need better execution from the recievers and O line….CC did however pressure the pass. (smart for CC)

GI running game is potent, don't let them (Kish, White, Nellenbach, Christian) get to the corners!!! (not so good for CC)

Arial show this week with Milan….but if Milan blitz's the pass then you get Kish'ed. I'm thinking an over bet is good.

    Huron – View…intersting match-up.
    View in a thriller.

Best D-player….GI TEAM for now. Air/Huron D is in the mix too. (Funny how the best D's are at the top of HL right now)

    Keep it free….it's not Obamablog.

GI ran because that's what was given….not because they would rather do it!! (nice try Chris)

CC – Air…CC with a losing record is not what Air expectd from CC. The Catholics will be in a bad mood which is bad for Air. Bet the under and get ready for Air angst on the blog.

Jeff – FR…this will be FR's week. Get the kiddy cocktails on ice FR faithful.

    Reminder; check you sump-pump!

    SITOFN

  38. I do like Bacon.

Sorry, I do like the blog, I enjoy the previews but not enough to pay for it. I can get the New Herald on-line for free. Remember, this is high school football. Someone will start a free blog in its place.

It is way to early to tell who the best RB in the league is. I would probably vote for GIs kid though I have not had a chance to see him play.

  39. Coffee or Bacon?
    Mmmmmm Bacon

Big rivalry game over at Navarre Field this week.

I believe that Airport will be suprised.

Jefferson or Flat Rock doomed for the basement this week?

I think that Flat Rock can pull this one off.

Grosse Ile has another shot at ending a losing streak against Milan.

GI's O will be too powerful for Milan. From what it sounds is that the GI D may keep them in the win column.

Who is the best RB in the league?

I have not seen him yet but Kish sounds like the #1 after the game he had at SMCC. Even without a ton of carries he gets the yards.

Either Huron or Riverview will take a step towards a possible playoff birth this week.

    Huron will – Sorry Riverview

Looks like the fans agree that Giarmo is the best coach in the league.

As of now there is not anyone close to Giarmo that can take a team year after year to the playoffs and beyond.

Should I make this a private fee based site next season with exclusive interviews and better coverage?

I would pay a fee as long as it wasn't much.

SMCC cost me a McNasty Burger for lunch last week.

Why did you think that they were going to beat GI last week?…

Its nice to see the GI staff took my advice and used their running game to help their defense. :)I

I would agree with this. I read that White is hardly throwing the ball. But Kish didn't slow the clock down too much with those long runs that you mentioned….
