  1. Airport looked balanced defense was stingy on giving up the points to GI French had 16 tackles and a interception almost 2. McCormick almost got a pic and was where he needed to be most every play
I also was impressed with I think 77 for GI big guy hustled and looked good pretty fast for his size

  2. Again it comes to game plan for GI. Having Kish run up the gut against Airport would not work. I doubt that you could name a player in the league that could run up the gut against them. That was the only running play that GI tried with him and also with the other back nellenbach for a total of only 9 rushing plays between the two of them. I don't care what team you are playing you will use your backs more than that. Airport had the plan GI did not get creative altering their plan. Talent was on the Airport side but if GI would of created opportunities like the earlier poster mentioned it would of also shown that we can ADJUST when needed. At least then it would of opened up a different dimension of the game a little bit more than just the passing game for GI. Again hindsight is 20/20 and we see now that GI did not adjust to the Airport game plan. I agree Airport was the better team out there last Friday but also believe that it could of been a closer game with a little creativity on the GI scheme.

  3. Dave Box I believe has moved over to Eastern Michigan and is on their Wrestling team. At least that's where I saw his name last. I believe Wrestling was really his first choice of sports and he was very good at it. Western doesn't have a Wrestling team anymore.

  4. Overall, what team was bigger faster and stronger?
I thought that would be your answer. Thanks for agreeing with me:)

Kish is a fast player but Schumake and Jones looked football faster on Friday.

  5. Chris,

I doubt that there is an Airport player that is faster than Kish – the better team won and preparation was there for Airport – GI clearly did not plan for the game.
Oh, by the way – I am not a GI or Airport fan….just an observer.

  6. I thought the team that was bigger faster and stronger won the game Friday Night.

Don't blame the coaching. talent was better on teh other side of the field.

    GI should make the playoffs.

  7. GI did take what was given, but clearly needs to CREATE opportunities utilizing ALL weapons going forward.

GI really did fail in the running game which was VERY disappointing. Certainly scouting would have shown the Air D line more dominant than previous games, so GI should have CREATED opportunities to slow it down like…screen, draw, misdirection, HB pass to flat, etc.

Just abandoning the run because you couldn't run with 7-9 guys in the box was not good…get to the edges or dink/dunk so the D can't pin their ears back (like they did).

Lots of monday Qb'ing going on here….but the comments on coaching did open the can.

"To the 7:15 poster….When you have two backs and a QB that all average 10+ yards per carry you do not pass it when you are on the 5 yard line or less. I don't care how you load the box up those three can move the ball. The qb had 16 carries, and the two running backs had a total of 9 carries. You cannot tell me that between the three could not gain a yard in the red zone. We looked at it as being bad play calling."

I disagree with this blanket type statement. Things get MUCH more difficult inside the 5 yard line for teams like GI who are somewhat still finesse with Kish running the ball. Lets face it, he is more speed than brawn. So spreading things out and "throwing" handoffs on the 5 is more likey to get the job done then to line it up mano y mano with a tougher team in the trenches and try to duke it out.

Hindsight makes play calling a whole lot easier doesnt it? I say we can cut the HC some slack and give him the benefit of the doubt that he probably knows his team a heck of a lot better than we all do. Putting it in White's hands is not a bad option EVER.

  9. Continued off topic…can we get an update on the college careers of many former Huron Leaguers? In addition to not seeing Weclowski at SVSU, I don't see Stockert on Alma's roster anymore, Box on WMU's roster, etc.

    Just curious….

  10. To the 7:15 poster….When you have two backs and a QB that all average 10+ yards per carry you do not pass it when you are on the 5 yard line or less. What we saw that night that Airport is a very good team and grosse ile is a very good team but was not prepared as well as a team as the Airport kids were. They were outplayed but also out coached…..

    Good win Airport

  11. the people who say "gi should have run more" are you out of your mind?! They couldnt get any positive yards, their offensive line got dominated. Throwing was their only option, ESPECIALLY in the redzone because airport would load up the box. If they score a td in the air then everyone says what a great call it was to pass, if its incomplete you say "they should run'" hinesight is 20 20

  12. Weclowski walked onto SVSU last fall, but is no longer on the team. Dex Teen from SVSU is still playing and looks as if he is getting some playing time. Box from Milan is also seeing some time for the Wayne State Warriors. Congrats to both

  13. Week 6 Thoughts..

    Will SMCC make the playoffs?

    Is Huron is in trouble?

    Can Flat Rock beat Milan?

    Will Riverview make the playoffs?

    Can GI compete next year?

Will GI-Jeff combine for more points this week than they did last year LOL??

Will AIrport win a playoff game?

Milan, Flat Rock, Huron, or SMCC could finish 5-4…would any of those teams make it in at 5-4??

    It's been a fun year.!!

  14. GI needs to do what works best for them – whatever you weren't doing in games 1-4 worked – GO BACK TO WHAT YOU WERE DOING DURING THOSE GAMES.

  15. "GI hurt themselves when they had long drives of 12 and 14 plays that resulted in no points" – What we heard is that they kept on trying to spread it out and pass and keep on doing it while on the 6 or less yard line several times during the game and lose the ball on downs! The bears will just have to control the pass next week since GI seems to have lost their running game cause who would pass when you have short yards to go?

    GO BEARS!!

  16. Iffy? That's a joke right? Aside from the long touchdown pass they gave up, Airpot's secondary did a good job. When White throws the ball 40 plus times in a game he's gonna get alot of yards against anybody they play. EM

  17. I disagree, McCormick played extremely well. They had major problems throwing to his side of the field. He is the best DB I have seen all year.

White is also the best QB around. He can zing the ball. He reads the defense, has great footwork, is elusive and knows when to just throw the ball away. I know he is a very good golfer but I hope he plays football in college.

  18. When you allow a QB to pass for 340 yards I would call the secondary iffy. Did they make good plays? Yes, but it's still 340 yards.

  19. I forgot to mention super sophomore Scott McCormick, probably the best corner in the league. He stayed step for step with Kish on a couple deepballs. He also isn't afraid to come up and hit people. EM

  20. flat rock got outplayed and couldn't tackle. They need to let the qb throw he has 2 or 3 guys with sure hands and they threw the ball i believe 5 times last night one for a td and others for nice 3rd down conversions. It seems like the jet style offense hurts them hard as soon is someone goes in motion they run the ball to motion side 9 out of 10 times the other one time is a reverse. its to easy to defend unless you have a speed guy getting to the edge. it also seems like refs do not know exact rules anymore. Wr and CB both go up for a ball both catch it in the air and they both come down with it, ball then remains with the offense correct?

  21. Nice win for the Bears. They have a tough schedule the rest of the way but they will be a tough out. Young ones are hitting their stride and will continue to improve. Me thinks it is going to get interesting. Bear fans unite and support this team next week at GI and the last three at home. Bear Pride!!!!!

  22. 11:24 p.m. post…

I agree. I don't know what is being taught on the field there at GI, but it is not acceptable behavior. If you want to see sportsmanship, you should have been at Milan last night. We had a memorial service for one of our graduates that was killed in Iraq and the SMCC team was there participating. It was a great game even though we lost. Hope all the SMCC kids that were injured are O.K.

  23. How did Milans passing game do this week? Heard the QB got knocked out with a concussion. Isnt that two QBs down this year.

  24. GI had so many passing yards because Airports D made Kish nonexistent. Dont't get me wrong he made a couple good runs for big chunks of yards but other than that he wasn't going anywhere. White could pass every down if he waned too Airports secondary looked a little iffy, but overall a good game was 28-7 with 2 mins left when GI scored so maybe not was close as it sounds.

  25. Yes SITOFN alot of football to be played. However the way Airport is playing, Huron, Jefferson, or Milan will have to play the game of their lives to pull an upset. GI doesn't have alot to be down about, Kish will get his on just about everybody else in the league. Second place in the league would be a huge accomplishment considering where GI has been the last 5 years. EM

  26. I will start with saying that I was really impressed with Flat Rock last night. The kids never quit, they played hard until the alst play of the game. I was most impressed with a couple of great catches by a little guy, I think it was #3, and the play of the full back. They are not a big team, but they are a young team.

On the Riverview side we got to see 3 running backs run all over the place. With 2 fumbles from the starting back, the speedy #21 finally got some good playing time. Both of Riverviews top back are 10th graders. Way to go bucs!

  27. White threw 45 times?? WOW! Hopefully they utilized Kish in the passing game. (Obviously I wasn't there). Sounds like GI gave up on running game after the 1st series.

I'm predicting Airport and Jefferson could be a good one if Jefferson shows up to play.

  28. Chris, I asked before and never got a response I was just curious as to see you have as the best blocking back in this league?

  29. Friday recap:
Man did Huron get a lesson in gravity tonite….big surprise.
I think Jeff pulled the fork out
    and stuck it to Huron.

SMCC…no tylenol for Jack and Milan proved that they'll have growing pains for a year or 2. CC to playoffs?…don't be against it!

View…Dr. Jeckyl or Mr. Hyde, seems as though Dr. Jeckyl shows up when they can run the ball. Their back may be as good as anyone in the league….GI and Air take note. FR stayed in the game though….credit there.

Air….good win for sure in "game of the week". Air is the HL leader now, but all is not won…lotsa ball left. Balanced team for sure with a D that is envious. GI is very much alive… a tough loss to a better team, but clearly they are competing for the top of the league, best GI has played Air in years….patsy no more.

Great week; Jeff surprise, SMCC rolls, View finds an identity (maybe), GI's first adversity and Air in the drivers seat….lets see how next week plays out.

    SITOFN

  30. G.I. needs to let some helium out. This loss just brings them back to reality. As for the best back in the league….They have two:Nellenbauch is an awesome back also. Cuddy is a great QB when given the chance.Wait till next year when these boys have their day.

  31. Glad to see the Rams finally put a whole game together. A couple things play out differently and the score is reversed. On another note, now I see why the little league games tomorrow got moved to the Jackets' home field…. anyone up for some muddin?

  32. If you flip back and read SITOFN predictions, you will see he was wrong on just about every one of them. Kish got shut down! I, however was right. The new lights at Airport did shine upon SITOFN frowning face as he headed for the exit. Bet that crow is going to taste nasty!

  33. I'm about to give up on huron.. Its like they can't finish a game and now can't play……. You gotta go forward.. Not backwards.. Just disappointed..

    Kc

  34. Great Game Tonight JETS!!!! Proud to be an Airport Alumni 😉

Being at both JV and Varsity Airport and GI games, the JV GI team sure could learn a lot from their Varsity team where sportsmanship comes into play. Not once did I see the JV GI team offer any sportsmanship during their game, as a matter of fact they went out of their way to do just the opposite. Did not learn a thing after getting shut down at Milan last week before the clock ran out.

  35. The Jefferson/SMCC game ought to be a good one. Good job tonight Bears. Airport………keep on rolling! Nice job shutting down what was being called a "powerful offense". GI is basically a 2 man show, and one was taken out of the picture. The winds of change are blowing…..but not towards the island.

  36. Jefferson will never lose to both Huron and Flat Rock in same season. When's the last time that happened Huron League stat-master???

  37. That's the first thing I noticed Chris was how small Grosse Ile is, especially up front. Airport's D completely shut Kish down but White had a good game. Poster 9:49 said it right Jets offensive line controlled the game. I knew once GI cheated on the run that Potcova would make them pay. Didn't understand the spike with 0.04 left either. Maybe White was trying to make sure they beat the spread LOL. EM

  38. GI fans still cannot understand when you have the best back in the league why don't you run him when on the goal line? you pass and pass and pass and not score??? This happened not once, but twice. I bet Kish did not touch the ball more than 7 times. The air game did not work tonight.

GI switched their game plan on both O and D tonight and it did not work. Coaches please switch it back to what has won you 4 games this year.

Good job jets on the win. You were better prepared for the game tonight and you stuck to what wins you your games. You did deserve to win.

  39. 10:224 poster, I am an airport fan but thats a dumb question. You must never ever quit, even if the game is out of reach. Just letting the clock run out would be a soft and pansy thing to do. I agree with what they did.

On the other hand, GO JETS!

They dominated in all phases of the game.
Offensive line play, back play, defensive play, special teams you name it.

  40. Not sure what happened to Huron. Sounds like they walked into a den of angry Bears.

One thing I noticed at tonight's Airport/GI game was how much bigger Airport was compared to GI.

  41. Airport's O-line was impressive and controlled most of the game. They know how to grow 'em out there…BIG BOYS. Both teams played well, but this game was a testiment to how important it is to win the battle up front.

  42. I thought it was a great game. Airport was physical with the run and opportunistic with the pass. GI hurt themselves when they had long drives of 12 and 14 plays that resulted in no points. Airport defense stepped up big when they had to. Pretty much took Kish away but White is a stud at QB. Schumake and Jones were very good for Airport. Two good teams but the better team won. Good job Jets!

  43. Grosse Ile had alot of self inflicted wounds, they have a long way to go yet. Airport looked physical tonight. I LOVE TO SEE THAT.

The Jets Offensive line controlled the game.
