Football Season Starts Tomorrow

Practice for teams around the state and the Huron League will start tomorrow. Teams will be forced to practice through the heat as temperatures will again be in the 80’s for the 41st straight day.

Cooler temperatures will arrive on Thursday just in time for when teams can practice in full pads. Once again Flat Rock will be one of the first teams in the state to practice in full pads as the Rams continue their tradition of practicing at 12:01 am on the first day of contact. The Rams hope to improve on a school worst 0-9 season a year ago and appear to be a team poised for future success.

For the first time in a long time it doesn’t appear that SMCC has a lock on the league title. The Falcons have won 14 straight league games but appear to be somewhat vulnerable this season after massive graduation losses. Many will pick the Falcons to repeat as league champs but the cakewalk of the last few seasons is probably over.

Milan welcomes a new coach in 2001 Milan graduate Jesse Hoskins. Hoskins is replacing Milan legend Steve Robb who retired from coaching after 26 seasons at the helm of the Big Red program. Hoskins may have his work cut out for him this season but Milan is a football crazy town and the Big Reds always boast a wealth of speed, talent and depth.

There are many other stories around the Huron League that will create a lot of banter around the league. Can Jefferson right the ship after 4 years of less than Bear-like football? Can Huron duplicate it’s magical season of 2010 or do the Chiefs return to yearly cellar dweller status? Can Airport replace Jodeci Mays? Will Grosse Ile find a way to stop an opponent from scoring? Will Riverview finally return to glory or will they just be another bottom four program?

While overall the Huron League appears to be down slightly from the past few seasons, one thing is for sure, the league will be pound for pound one of the toughest leagues in the state.

  1. Coach B is more than a great coach, and puts in more work to a program than anyone will ever know. Main reason I stayed and loved playing at GI. No need to rag on your own teams coach behind a blog name Mr. C. Good luck to all the Huron League teams. Nothing like high school football.

  2. I love how monroe comes here talking bout how great their football traditions are… but yet, they don't have their own blogs for their league? LOL get off the HURON LEAGUE BLOG and go make your own and trash talk there, or simply take to M-Live. =] No one cares bout "farm boys".. we have our own farm boys in the huron league.. der

  3. Well were not looking to keep up on the Catholic League this is the Huron League Blog and thats who we're worried about.

  4. "my sister can beat up your sister" dribble is awfully M-live-ish…. and it really should stay there.

Is that a bad thing? M-Live isnt that bad, its pretty entertaining. Good way to keep up on the catholic league, SEC and other divisions around the state.

  5. I hate when out of town people come on this blog and troll. This blog is fine chris, whats going on now isn't anything new. The person who said this blog is turning into mlive must be new apparently since in the past there have been back and forth trolling worse than this.

  6. Chris…I think the 10:50 poster is refering the "county/area" garbage of the last few posts.

I don't think it's tooo bad, however all the "my sister can beat up your sister" dribble is awfully M-live-ish…. and it really should stay there.

How about a thread today where people can talk about the first day of pads…..what do people see?

  7. I think he is talking about the polls and the opinion pieces you write Chris. Maybe it's the coverage you provide of the games on a regular basis.

  8. I guess maybe it is. I screen all of this stuff first.

Can you give me an example of something that has crossed the line? I'll remove it.

Are you talking about anonymous posters?

  9. If there were ever a Wayne vs Monroe county all-star game, Wayne would dominate every year. As for downriver tradition, schools like Allen park, Trenton and Riverview have some of the richest tradition in the state, not just the area. Smcc is the only in monroe that is comprable.

  10. monroe county has better tradition than detroit. Congratulations on your one state title with king. We have more. CC wons two, jefferson won one, as well as erie mason. Congratulations on all your D1 players through the years, no one cares about D1 players until college.

  11. "Oh and is home to better football teams than your jets will ever see". Well Mike, Airport sees Bedford in 2 weeks and Bedford beat the 2 best Downriver teams in the playoffs last year.

  12. laughing stock of the entire state? yet it brings in many jobs and racks in money. Oh and is home to better football teams than your jets will ever see.

  13. If you want to run the grinnel offense you need to make sure you have some good offensive rebounders. Otherwise things could get ugly if your perimeter guys start tossing up bricks.

(Than again no matter what system you run if your perimeter guys throw up bricks it could get ugly but more so in the grinnel where defensive ideologies are lacking.)

  14. Sissy City: Do you need a hug? Did I hurt your feelings? I am sorry.

You need to learn to relax a little. Do not take high school football so serious, it cannot be good for the heart.

And I do not believe that I said anything about Riverview doing anything this year. I do not get your "comeback". Oh well, my point is proven YET AGAIN.

Flat Rock is the only (Milan left and came back) original Huron League team. And last time that I checked, Flat Rock was in Wayne county. Just in case you needed to know more about the league.

  15. "Told ya……SMCC is worried this year. Giarmo might make good chicken salad, but remember, it's only a side dish. Better cook up a real meal if you want the top slot this year!"

Odd, I looked at all the posts and I cant tell which post you are refering to.

Making things up is not a good way to go about your business.

  16. Craig M. The food you stuff in your big mouth everyday, comes from a farm. I wouldn't trash "farm boys"! The life is much better on the "farm" than it is "downriver". Riverview isn't going anywhere this year, so deal with it. Lots of "farm boys" down here in MONROE County just waiting for an shot at a wet "river rat"! Time for these Wayne County teams to go! Bring in Ida, Dundee, Summerfield, etc! I hate giving a dime to anybody in Wayne County, it's the laughing stock of the entire State!!!

  18. I coach 8th grade and was thinking about running that. I have a very good, fast, quick first 5 but then it tapers off greatly from there. I should have 9 players. THis last year we pressed the entire game and played up tempo throughout. We finished 13-4. I'm just not sure the cyo is ready for coach A's stuff. Your thoughts?

  19. My Airport comment STILL STANDS. If you can't take it, stop trying to dish it out: What is wrong with the folks down there. The year was 1994, it was the FIRST time that Airport EVER beat Riverview. Since then AP has a better record. BUT, overall, View has the better record. Does this mean that I am "being a hater"? No, I am just stating a fact. For a bunch of farm boys you guys do not have very thick skin. Get over yourselves.

  20. That's not my point SITOFN. You think Airport goes 4-5 that's your opinion. My point is you trashin them every chance you get, especially when your team is on a 6game losing streak against them. What if I came on this blog and trashed CC every chance, considering my team has only beat them once since '04 that would make me look childish and stupid.

  21. Should be a great season. League title is there for the taking. I can see CC or Airport runnin the table in the league or losing a game or 2. GI will be a threat but I doubt they have enough D to beat CC & Airport. Riverview is a true wildcard. Great coach entering his third season, Pirates fans might start to lose patience. Milan will take a step back during transition, as will Huron do to big graduation losses. Flat Rock has talent but not enought depth or size. Jefferson may battle FR for the cellar. Can't wait to kick it off. EM

  22. "-SMCC is extremely beatable this year."

maybe so but they are still less beatable than every other Huron League team.

That's what I love about bn, he has the common sense approach on high school football.

Everyone is forgetting the key factor in SMCC

Jack Giarmo and his coaching staff.

If anyone can make chicken salad……

  23. My opinion of a down year for Airport is not HATE….just a projection.

If Air fans = a projection of a down year to hate… that means only positive predictions are seen as acceptable to Airport.

Clearly that is not reasonable or rationale position, but then again….read the Airport predictions page and you decide if
Air fans are either reasonable or rationale.

Riddle me this….why no venom from Riverview or Jefferson fans when I nickname them.

The blog readers/writers will decide for themselves….one of the fun things about blogging.

    PADS ON THURSDAY BOYS!! SITOFN

  24. I've said it before, Mays will not be replaced this year. Last year Airport was awesome at RB, this year they will be solid. The reason they will be better is because they are better just about everywhere else. Potcova will be much improved and has solid weapons. The defense will be much better overall. My biggest concern is replacing Kitts and Deweese up front. EM

  25. 1:58…
I'll put the GI comment to rest concerning parents and Coach B.

No parents I'm aware of have visions of granduer that little Johnny was Bart Starr or Mean Joe Greene….quite the opposite actually.

Recently, Most parents have decided to keep their noses out of the politics of coaching and AD changes because of the stink left behind when previous parents did!!

And trust me on this one….Coach B is no Obama. His wardrobe is better than he speeches. However, he is a players coach which I don't always like, but I think it is usually good for kids of this age.

I've taken my share of shots at Coach B on this Blog, and still think he gets toooo big a pass on Defensive INEPTITUDE….but he is our guy and will likely stay that way for a while. (a coach who is a teacher in the school..which GI politics like).

So keep the Defense demands at full ROAR all you bloggers….the truth hurts on that one!!

    SMCC will be good…
Milan will not be a patsy…
    Jeff will kinda show-up…
    Air will error…
Huron learns gravity…Riv tries to overcome it.
    GI better, DEE-pending…

  27. if you though Jodeci was good, you should have seen IZ the BIZ! What are you thoughts Chris as to who was a better back?

  28. my long thoughts on those thoughts.

-The midnight practice that flat rock does seems pretty cool, who started that tradition and how long has it been around?

-SMCC is extremely beatable this year. They lost a ton of great players from last years team. Everyone says they will reload but the players they lost were pretty darn good. I have a feeling the SMCC loses more than 1 league game this year.

-After being overated in 2006, milan had gone 29-13 under previous coach Steve Robb. Despite the success I dont think there will be a whole lot of pressure on hoskins this season. Its his first year, Giarmo did awful his first years and look how he has ended up. lots of people on this blog dont think milan will be any good this year. People feel that robb wouldnt have left milan unless the cupboard he had to work with was bare. I highly doubt that, with over a 1,000 students and plenty of transfers from Ypsi schools, I find it so hard to believe that talent is an issue at Milan.

-I dont know if jefferson will right the ship, they need more talent. I didnt see jefferson last year but I do know the year before they didnt have an o-line starter over 190 lbs. that has to change if you want to succeed in this league. Quickness is good but you need size and strength. Jefferson also isnt very athletic. Until they start feeding there kids and have them hitting the weights, jefferson wont be anything better than a middle of the pack team. I do hope they win so people will get of coach cisco's back. How do you expect him to win with this sorry bunch?

-Huron will not duplicate there success and will most certainly return to cellar dweller status, Theres a rumor going around the young kalby and old kalby are no longer on speaking terms as a result of old kalby taking the coaching job at Lincoln Park. I dont know if these romors have any substance to them or not, just the word on the street.

-Airport CANNOT and WILL NOT replace Jodeci Mays….NO ONE CAN.
Jodeci was as talented a back I have ever seen, you dont replace talent like that. You just hope that the next guy can just do his best and give you a good shot, because he sure as heck aint going to be no Jodeci.

-Grosse ile is peculiar to me. The previous coach Ryan Flanery coaches the team for only four seasons, 2 of which were playoff qualifiers, one of which went all the way to the state semi's losing to powerhouse DeWitt(even more impressive about that 9-4 season was the fact they started out 1-3). Yet he goes 4-5 in 05 and he gets booted. Bring along Johnnie Bodner who promptly loses 6 games his first season. Than he does his rod marinelli impression by running the the table backwards by going 0-18 the next two season. Then the 2 seasons after that he has gone .500. That leads to the big question. What has bodner done so well to keep him around? Does he kiss but better than flanery or what? Even if flanery didnt get run out of town which some guilty GI folk like to claim. Than GI must not have high expectations to keep bodner around as long as they have. But that wouldnt make sense since they ran flanery out after being a year removed from a semi appearance. Bodner must have better oratory skills when it comes to pleasing parents who think there kids are scholarship athletes and who live vicariously through them.

-Riverview will return to glory but the key is patience. Stergalas stepped into a huge mess. Stergalas probably thought he only need to clean up a spill but instead he needed to rebuild the whole freakin program. Give stergalas time, he is a great coach but he cant make chicken sald with chicken $hit.

  29. Actually I was referring to the last two seasons where they were pretty much everyone's choice for league champion and they backed it up by winning 14 straight league games over those two years.

  30. SMCC wasnt a lock for the league title in 2007 or 2008. Come on Chris, no need to disrespect Airport and Milan like that.
