I will be posting my All League picks and Player of the Year choices on Monday 10/25/10.
I need help choosing the Player of the Year for both offense and defense. I have listed a few players worth considering and would like the readers of the blog to vote. You can vote down your party line or you can be objective. It is up to you.
Offensive Player of the Year?
Kyle Burkhardt: This 5-10 210lb offensive guard from SMCC is the best offensive lineman in the league and is a returning 1st team all league selection. The Falcons have rushed for nearly 3000 yards and 44 touchdowns this season behind Burkhardt and his teammates.
Jodeci Mays: The senior running back from Airport is a returning all league selection. He has rushed for 1,679 yards and scored 30 touchdowns. Mays was the Blogs pick for Offensive Player of the Year last season.
Robbie White: The 6-0 185 lb junior QB from Grosse Ile has thrown for 1,589 yards and 15 touchdowns. White has also ran for 419 yards and 13 touchdowns while leading the 2nd highest scoring offense in the Huron League.
Sterling Wilson: The senior running back has rushed for 1,227 yards and 14 touchdowns for Huron this season. Wilson is one of the main reasons the Chiefs obtained their first winning season since 1978.
Defensive Player of the Year?
Brad Bosman: The 6-1 200 lb defensive lineman from Riverview is a returning all league player on both offense and defense. Bosman has recorded 94 tackles for the 2nd best scoring defense in the Huron League.
Joe Dunn: The senior LB from Milan is among the league leaders in tackles and is the defensive leader for the playoff bound Big Reds.
Anthony Kitts: The 250 lb senior defensive lineman from Airport is a returning all league selection and has been the anchor for the Jets defensively this season.
Michael Pannone: Pannone from SMCC was last season’s Blog selection for Defensive Player of the Year. He is among the league leaders in tackles and he is a two time all league selection at safety. He is quite simply the best player on the best defense in the league.
Pannone and mays. pannone has the best stats on the best team in the league. mays ran on everybody. no questions asked
he has no intentions of playing football in college, as least thats what he told me.
Cusimano for Offensive player of the year, he should at least be on the list! He's had a great year and is invaluable to his team.
pannone can not, will not,and never could defend the pass…too short and too slow..he is a good tackler for his size…not hating on the kid,but am being brutally honest…he has a heart as big as a man hole cover…too short to defend the fade route and consistantly gets burned in later rounds of the playoffs when they play better opponents…dad, be honest with his talents….he will be ,maybe at best, a ok NAIA player..good luck in the playoffs SMCC…This is your year, mark my words…..Jack brings it home this year…
Obviously we all want our athletes to be recognized for their accomplishments on the field. In terms of offense people always look at stats, if that decides OPY then Mayes wins hands down. He was a solid runner no question, even against the best defenses in the Huron League. You can consider Dunn, Wilson, or one of the CC runners but bottom line Mayes is it. The other thing to consider is to win in the Huron League you must control the football and have a solid running game, Mayes did that. QB's can have great numbers but if if they are not providing wins then it does take away from their claim to the POY.
Defensively is a different beats. One:What is the defensive scheme? Two: Where are the tackles being made? Three: How are the stats calculated? Usually solos and assist are not tallied they go in a lump some—unfortunately. Sometimes numbers reflect changes in scheme or improvement at other positions. If your getting tackles way down field or getting tackles because your defense is on the field forever that has to play into the equation. Lastly: How valuable id the player. If he wasn't in would it affect the defense? I think Dunn, Bosman, Kitts, and Pannone are all good defensive candidates. But certainly in big games and quality play against the top Huron schools there's seems to be a separation. Take it for what its worth. I know many say it should not matter the team record or standing, but there's a reason the team's success. If you look at their play usually two or three players make a difference. Good Luck to all.
to JW: Not sure about Bicy and Robinson's freshman year but they went to CC their sophomore, junior and senior years. AND, for the record, both Robinson and Bicy played JV their sophomore year.
And who exactly were the lineman that tranferred to CC "late in high school"? Yeah, that's what I thought.
I graduated a year after Robinson and Bicy. Feel free to verify the above facts in one of your CC "friends" yearbook. Although, that would require your comments to be responsible and based in fact.
So there you go—consider your point argued.

if any of you"huron league fans" knew anything u wouldnt be bashing that Pannone has 70 tackles right now.
hes a little fact Pannone has only played one FULL game all 9 games this season. and only 3 games where he played after half time,
idk if you are smart enough but if you do any type of math you would see that he bassicly has played an average of 5 to six games if that, he gets pulled out because the score is unreasonable to be in there so 70 tackles for playing half of the games this season isnt a bad stat. and as far as running the ball, WHY its not worth it to lose your best player by giving him the ball when you dont need him, and he had two carries against milan and has about 20 yards, so if they need it he will get it.
i have no clue why everyone would bash a player. i understand team rivalries and that is ok if someone bashes a team but you are honestly going to bash a player who is / will most likely be the leading tackler in smcc history over in , one of the best if not the best safties to come out of smcc and a kid who has been to the show and has a good chance to lead his team this year not to mention all the accolades he has recieved.
be proud the league is over everyone should root for everyone at this point were a community now.
and congratz HURON!!!!!
Weclowski is a great player, great leader and IMO deserves this. Not to mention what Huron has accomplished this year.
Recruit talk was aimed alot at years past. I graduated from Airport in 06 so i was a senior during the 05 season.(yes I know we won districts, and yes I know cc went to the finals, so save it) I was friends with alot of players from cc, and they would laugh and joke about the recruiting. Bicy, Robinson, and a few of the lineman did NOT go to cc until late in highschool. Anyone care to argue that? Because that is where all the recruit talk comes from. They didn't care to hide it, they flat out admited it. Stuff happens behind closed doors, and only the people behind them can say whats happening for sure.
j.w.
pannone is good. he is where he needs to be evrery time. when he gets a stinger and gets taken out for a play or two, its VERY noticeable. he would shine if he played on any team, it doesnt matter that cc is the best in the league. who cares about his size, he could keep up with any d3 or d1 school out there. he has the determination to good qualities to do so.
First of all lets get a few things straight SMCC didn't recruit Bicy, Robinson and Hardy. Their school closed and a former coach of SMCC mentioned to the boys take a look at SMCC so they did. I don't know how you can recruit when the school cost $6,000 a year and doesn't give athletic scholorships. Were recruiting takes place is in the public schools where you have school of choice.
SMCC athletes are all home grown parochial school kids. Also Pannone as a freshman on the J.V. team rushed for over 1150 yards as a freshman, the reason he doesn't play offense is that he is a more valuable member of the defensive team than the offensive team. So let me ask all you bloggers how many safeties in high school college or the Pros lead their teams in tackles I'm sure the percentage is very small. Again we will see when the Monroe Evening News selects the offensive and defensive players of the year. I really enjoy reading all your comments.
if pannone is flying around like a running back why does he only have 70 tackles.as far as his tackles he had in the past seasons you haft to ask your self how many games did he play most guys where done at 9.because of his great team he played all most twice as many games wake up.
If pannone was all over the field like you say i think he would have a lot more tackles.honorable mention was for div.6.and he has the benefit of only playing one way.they tried him at running back and it did not work.pannone gets talked up a lot because the team hes on but he just a good player that's it. because he runs around yelling a lot is good make him a captain.but that don't make you def. player of the year.he has way to much help from his team.he only gets noticed in the huron league because cc so good.out side of are region all he got was honorable mention for div. 6.that means he did not even get 1st team div. 6 let alone all the guys a head of him as 1st team and honorable mention and special mention in div.5,4,3,2,1.And at his size he wo't even be able to play d3 ball.
Did bowman do that! Well congrats to him. Guess what pannone upped him by a few. Try all region and honorable mention all state and had the 2 highest amount of tackles for sophomores in the state. It's an easy decision pannone
In reference to my past comment; What is Riverviews record in the time frame you are talking about? Bosman may be the Buc's best player, would he necessarily be CC's? I'm not sure. You are talking the best player on a so-so team. Bosman isn't bigger than any of SMCC's defensive lineman. The whole defensive scheme is to take on blockers and let linebackers get all the tackles. I am serious. He would just be another grunt on CC's line. Nobody would know his name. Typical of the Huron League have 1 good season and you are set for the rest of your career.
If you decide by who had the least bad games on offense the award has to go to Mayes hands down. White will hopefully have his day in the sun next year, the kid has all the tools to be an All League pick, but has had a few bad games this year. If you give the award for the person who is the most intense and hard to stop defensively Pannone is like having a running back on defense, he's everywhere you look and gets to the ball with reckless abandone.
shut up with the cc recruit talk, they dont do it and frankly its getting OLD. Get over it, you were beaten by a tougher, more disciplined team. My pick is mayes and pannone. Pannone not only does well as a safety but shows the leadership qualities of a dpoy.
Remember when CC recruited Bicy,Robinson and Hardy.
Now Michael….are you kidding me, Bosman has been starting on Varsity Defense since his sophmore year and made 1st team all league for defense as a sophmore, made 1st team all league jumior year unanamously…would he start for SMCC…seriously????????
Wow only three players going to hit 100 tackles. That shows you how good Weclowski was with 157 tackles.
I need to agree with the previous, if we are voting for Player and not team which we are I say Mayes and Bosman
Pannone for defense of player of the year no doubt about it
FR dad….statistically mayes, from their games against us….wilson. I think most would disagree but I would choose wilson. DPOY….Dunn
Would Bosman start for SMCC's defense is a better question? Just because last year was he all-league doesn't really mean anything to me concerning this years performance. Mayes numbers would be way down in the "share the wealth" SMCC offense. Mayes is my opoy this yer. He had agreat season. I hope they make the playoffs. I abstain from defensive vote.
Now I know people would want to chose from the league champs SMCC however if Mayes and Bosman played for SMCC this year would their even be a question??? Just because their team is not the league champs doesn't mean that they are not our Op and Dp of the year.
There in lies the difference…SMCC only counts solo tackles and they have 6-8 different players run the ball each game…so if either of these young men played for SMCC…their numbers would not be what they are
Another sour comment from a CC fan on recruits. They just won't stop, will they? Mayes and Bosman. And yes, this is a vote for "players", not overall team performance.
I cant believe the Huron people are still wanting to vote for Weclowski.
Despite pannone not having the most tackles people just need to realize that their overall defense is great. If it could happen I'd nominate their entire defense. Don't just look at stats look at the overall comparison of the defense!
glad to see Burkardt considered for opy. combination of vision, strength, hands, speed and work ethic.won of the best guards smcc has developed. You won't become a good player without good coaching.
Offense Player should obviously be Mays – he once again leads the league in rushing
Defense Player is a little tougher but I would have to chose Bosman, 2 year all league in defense and has been consistent in puting up the tackles again this year. In addition he was all league in offense last year as well. All around great player.
Now I know people would want to chose from the league champs SMCC however if Mayes and Bosman played for SMCC this year would their even be a question??? Just because their team is not the league champs doesn't mean that they are not our Op and Dp of the year.
Wow where are all these supposed recruits from cc? Their best players are a 210 pound lineman and a 5'8" safety? Maybe they win for other reasons.
Mays and Pannone deserve it in my opinion.
