New Poll

The pre-season poll for Offensive Player of the Year is posted. There are a host of qualified candidates but much will depend on how their team fares in league play.

Airport’s Jodeci Mays ran for over 1,600 yards and 22 touchdown’s last season while leading the Jets to a 2nd place league finish. The elusive Mays will undoubtedly be the #1 weapon of first year coach Adam Barber.

Huron’s Sterling Wilson ran for nearly 1,300 yards and 11 touchdowns for the pass happy Chiefs. Look for Wilson’s numbers to rise this year as the Huron will have to go with a first year quarterback.

Milan’s Joe Dunn was a solid #2 ball carrier for the Big Reds last season. He still managed to rush for over 600 yards and 6 touchdowns for the playoff qualifying Big Reds.

Brian McCullough from Jefferson led the Bears in rushing last season with over 800 yards and 6 touchdowns. Look for those numbers to rise as the Bears field a better team this season.

Many may not have heard of SMCC’s Jack Cusumano but he quietly fan for over 600 yards and 6 touchdowns as the Falcons 4th option in the backfield last year. Look for Cusumano to switch to QB this year while running the Falcons sneaky offensive attack.

Riverview’s Ali Saad emerged midway through the season as a quick yet durable running back for coach Jeff Stergalas. Saad ran for over 800 yards and 10 touchdowns with 500 yards coming in the Bucs last three games.

Grosse Ile’s Robbie White is the lone underclassman of the bunch. The Junior signal caller threw for over 1,000 yards and 14 touchdowns as a Sophomore and will have one of the best receivers in southeast Michigan to throw to in Senior James Cameron.

There are some solid players to choose from and I undoubtledly left some other worthy players off of this list. I was careful to not mention two players from each team so the voting wouldn’t be split. Others worthy of mention are Milan’s Leo Pittman, Jefferson’s Jake Sterling, Grosse Ile’s Cameron and SMCC’s Luke Yinger and Andrew Lamour.

  1. What do you think of Huron's WR Alex Wellman? He is not known around the league, but I went to a Huron practice and he looks good. I think he will be a surprise to many this year.

  2. Bosman can barley even catch he is mostly an defensive player, who ever said he was the base of the pirates offensive game plan he dropped so many passes last year in some key games for thew Pirates. Riverview has a lot of talented Wide outs including cory turner

  3. Ok GI was pounded my smcc last year (61- 20) or something? but point being, Cameron had his 200 yard game because he was running outs and comeback routes against 2nd and 3rd team dbs. GI could go ahead and run those short pass routes. 1. that was taking up the clock, making it impossible for a comeback. (one wasnt really possible) 2. SMCC was up by a ton, so it wasnt really a factor even to them.
GI had more yards passing than the gue in the state title game @ FF, now are you going to tell me that they had anywhere near the passing offense? not a chance. Kater v White. No comparison at all. head over heels. Gue's WR Dejong v Cameron. Once again no comparison whatsoever. Dejong by a longshot. If smcc had needed to they could have shutdown the passing game of GI. So honestly i have not been impressed by cameron or white yet. Until they are in a legit game with a legit team and are putting up numbers that mean something besides stat padders when they are down on teams, then they will be as good as their hype. We'll see this season.

  4. Wow i guess he just exploded against CC. He did run nice routes and had good hands. He had a bit of an attitude on the field however… he needs to lose that.

  5. white is as good a quarterback the league has seen and cameron is as good as any WR, neither will get POTY awards because there team wont win the league and white is a junior, look at howey last year, mays should have won but was a junior and dint win league

  6. Im not sure what Cameeron's final numbers were but I am sure they were better than that. He had 250 against SMCC alone.

    Transferred to play with Bolster?

  7. Well, just looking locally for me I could argue that my neighbor Marc Polce was a pretty good receiver with 39 receptions for 697 yards as a junior. He transferred to Dundee for his senior.

  8. Name the last WR with Cameron's talent and numbers in the HL?

The HL has been mainly a run run run type of league over the last 50 years. Done be afraid to change with the times a bit Chris. If GI lights it up on offense the senior will get the nod over the junior.

Does Howie over Mays ring a bell?

The coaches will NOT give it to a junior if there is a worthy senior.

  9. Another note. POY are given to seniors in most cases. So, White getting it over Cameron if both are worthy at year's end will just not happen.

  10. I have to say one thing about huronleaguefootball… you were spot on with every prediction for smcc last year

  11. Yinger shuld get a ton of hype. Fast powerful runningback who runs down hill and over peoplenot because he cant but because Giarmo dosent allow shifty or flashy moves. he may not be shifty because he dosent have to be. With a very mature line that has a lot returning from last year he should have good blocks for holes this year. With Cusumano Lamour and Yinger back there the loss of the other runningbacks will be forgotten by week 3.

    new season.
    new players.
    more excitement.
    Oh, and tradition continues.

  12. Isn't Bosman supposed to be the Bucs primary offensive weapon this season? Who can Catch, Lead an who Saad is going to be running behind all season?

  13. All Im saying is, leaving worthy players off the poll ONLY because of vote splitting is just not a good reason. I think everyone would mostly agree with that.

I am mainly only speaking of Cameron. I am a CC guy but it was easy to see he was one of the top players in the league.

RE:"Cameron can't do a thing without White getting him the ball."

True, a good WR is better with a good QB but Cameron is big and strong and shook off a lot of would be tacklers. Which is why he was 1st team all league.

  14. I think that the next poll you need to list every player and when you pick that player it gives every single kid a vote. That would be the only fair way to do it I guess. OH, instead of a league championship we should just give everyone a participation award that says "i did my best". It would make the all league voting easier. ALL THE KIDS WOULD BE ALL LEAGUE!!! Hey, I think I like this. Lets stop keeping score too. It could hurt someones feelings to lose.

WHAT DO YOU PEOPLE WANT? Chris is doing a really nice job here. QUTCHERBITCHIN!!!!

  15. Cut the guy some slack. Cusumano was the guy when LaBeau was hurt last year and even when he wasn't. Cameron can't do a thing without White getting him the ball. Bates carried the ball like 5 times a game. Zapata plays for a team that will mostly end up in 7th or 8th place again.

  16. People are never happy! I guess it wasn't enough to at least mention a few others. Feel free to write people in then. So does your vote go to Pittman, Lamour or Cameron?:)

  17. wait a second how many yards did the 128 pounds of heart Eric Zapata get last year with how many touchdowns?

  18. Left worthy players off so votes wouldnt get split?? I bet Cameron and Yinger and Pittman appreciate that. Good thing the HL is giving out lemon drink and orange slices.

  19. Chris, you left worthy players off because they you didnt want to split votes? Then why do the poll at all. If people are only going to vote for thier school no matter who the player is then the poll is silly to begin with. If the players deserves to be considered for pre-season POY then put him on no matter what.

Cameron(as well as others) most def deserves to be on that list. He is the best WR this league has seen in quite some time.
