Week 2 Predictions Part I

Jefferson/Grosse Ile: Well the Red Devils have to be feeling pretty good about themselves after experiencing victory for the first time since 2006. I wonder if they know they haven’t beaten this weeks opponent since 2002. I picked GI to finish last in the Huron League but there is no doubt that they are an improved team since last year. They are much more balance offensively this year and their defense appears to be capable of stopping people.

Jefferson was shutout in the 1st half at Tecumseh last week. The 2nd half was a completely different story. The Bears wound up the running game that has made Marc Cisco a living legend. Bryan McCullough was simply brilliant in running for 186 yards on 16 carries while scoring 3 touchdowns. That number of carries could potentially double as the season goes on.

In this game look for the Bears to wear down the home team as the game goes on. The Bears will be way to physical for the Red Devils. Dex Teen will find the running room scarce against the Jefferson defense. This game may be close for a half but look for Jefferson to pull away when they need to. Bears win 35-12.

Riverview/SMCC:
Riverview must still be smarting from last weeks 4th quarter collapse against Crestwood. I really thought that was a game the Bucs would win. I think we may have found out that Jeff Stergalas really has his work cut out for him this year. One thing that Riverview showed last week was the ability to move the ball on the ground, as well as, through the air.

SMCC must feel the same way after Detroit Crockett scored on the last play of the game against the Falcons to steal a victory in a classic high school football game. SMCC ran the ball 93% of the time last week and will probably do the same this week. Special teams produced a score last week on the opening kickoff for the Falcons but they were unable to kick an extra point.

Riverview was able to keep things close last year for a half against SMCC. I don’t see that happening this week. The last time Riverview beat SMCC was in 2004 when the Bucs finished 11-1. That was the last time Riverview had a winning season. Look for Jack Giarmo to establish the running game as usual behind the physical pounding of fullback TJ Lovell. Chris LaBeau should be able to find some running room this week after being held to 3.6 yards per carry last week. SMCC wins 40-14.

  1. im the person that left the comment about jefferson jv team last year..u guys r right i was totally wrong…i was thinking about the freshman…jefferson jv did kill smcc last year

  2. Who ever commented that said jefferson jv did not go undefeated last year needs to think again and sayin cc crushed them?? our d lineman had a pick for 6 againist cc!!

  3. I was just gonna say that. The Jefferson JV team was 9-0 last year. Smcc did not beat them. you are thinking about the year previous 07-08. And yes McCullough was moved up by then.

  4. I have a bowl of crow for several posters that chose to dismiss GI. (turn heads against GI, looking too far ahead, negative yards last year, totally abuse GI, a little too big too quick, nowhere for teen to go)
BUT, all you skeptics out there please continue as it only helps build the underdog case.
Beware the winds of change …… anyone still want to stand by their 1-8 prediction??

  5. I beg to differ with the comment that your previous 10:32 anonymous made Jeffersons JV last year season 08-09 was undefeated and did beat Smcc check the stats again before commenting please. Oh and by the way McCullough had already been moved up to varsity so they relied on their 2 main running backs who ran 4.6's (approx)and their team (offensively and defensively) to take it to the house!

  6. For everyone who doubted G.I. just take this as an example. They will contend with teams this year. Granted they still lost the game, they were winning the entire game until 26 seconds left in the 4th quarter. GI will dominate the Bucs. Watch Out Folks!

  7. Hats off to a GI team that came to play some football. A very much improved team and sure got the attension of some Jefferson people.I think Jefferson definatly took this team for granted. I wasn't able to attend the game but I understand it was a very close game with Jefferson pulling it out 31-29. In the end congrats to the Jefferson boys for grinding out a tough game. Time to get to work boys.

  8. if u r talking about jeffersons JV team goin undefeated last year they were NOT. SMCC killed them. jeffersons JV team was still good and had a great season.

  9. We'll know what GI has here in abour an hour and a half. i know for a fact Jefferson hasn't chalked anything up yet. their going there to play 48 minutes of football. I'm glad to see you pumped up about GI this year and I hope they do shake up the league. I just think your looking too far forward too fast.

Don't think for a second that Jefferson doesn't have something to prove. They lost some talented kids this year and in comes an undeadeated JV team that all they hear is how their program is small and down this year. I can assure you this bunch of kids this year have alot to prove and they will do it 1 game at a time. This group has a huge amount of heart and eat and breathe as a team. Look for them to turn some heads starting tonight with GI.

  10. I just dont see how Gi thinks there gonna be able to get there so called great back teen any where. Jeffersons D line all run 4.8 40s and both d ends run 4.9 and upfront they are very strong! Look for it to be a good game and as i recall Gi had negative rushing yards last year. May just see esp tonight

  11. Totally Abuse GI?? Spoken like a team/league that will dis-respect GI, which recent history say's they deserve…..and cement GI firmly in the underdog seat. GI certainly has a lot to prove for sure……1 win at a time.

GI can not assume any further wins unless they deliver Defensively. But if they do, this could be an interesting year in the HL where everyone has a W chalked up against GI. Could make for some interesting match-ups down the stretch and really disrupt peoples thinking of HL standings when everyone's gimme-game just turned into a 15 foot putt??????

  12. I think you better strap it up real tight if you think Grosse Ile is gonna score 32 against Jeffersons defense. Theres not a chance of that happening. I can't see Jefferson not scoring atleast 30+ either. They will totally abuse G.I. tonight. Jeffersons offense struggled a bit in the 1st half last week but got it going in the 2nd half and ended the game taking a knee on Tecemseh's 2. I think you will see alot more air game tonight along with the power running game Jefferson is known for.

Now as far as the JV team they only have 15 kids dressed and their stud is out for the season so we don't expect real big things from that squad but they will come around.

Its nice to see G.I. fans have some excitemant this year but unfortunatly your looking alittle to big to quick. I love your enthusiasm though.

  13. Howey did have a great first game, thought it would be player of the week. Glad they gave it to a new varsity player though. It gives a needed boost of confidence.

  14. The bears will NOT score anywhere near 30 on GI. Question is will GI score 20+ or more on MJ. Dry/fast field = GI stretches the field with it's speed in a much more pronounced way than last week, and a high likelyhood of some AIR-o-Batics. The defensive speed will also produce surprises…but will the grit be there in the trenches to hold MJ to less than 20 pts?? Again, the Defence will be the key to GI success….GI 32, MJ 18.
Note… GI JV smoked MJ 46-27 with a couple gimme TD's to MJ late against GI's Freshman 2nd team D (GI has no Frosh team vs all Soph MJ JV team)
Do I smell the winds of change??
    Strap it up tight boys!!

  15. the qb for smcc is better than everyone thinks. labeau and lovell get all of the ink but howey does alot for CC..potentially the most dangerous person on their team when he has the ball. keep up the good work howey you'll get noticed sooner or later

  16. okay whoever left the comment talking bout riverview with a possible upset needs to quit smoking… or give me whatever your smoking because it obviously works… Can you even imagine what Crockett would have done to Riverview…CC's loss didnt mean a thing and Riverview lost to Crestwood… Crestwood? Really?… they dont have a chance get ready to get knocked into dirt Riverview and Im not even from CC

  17. To answer HLF, it depends on the person/player or team! Some will do neither, some will do one or the other, but most will NEED to do both when they play _________.

I recall playing years ago the pride our team/school/city had in having the reputation of being the most physical…not dirty or verbose, just knowing that the opponent better strap it up tight! It's football 101 and the key to what makes the sport so popular for players and fans alike.

  18. I also agree with the picks but I see the Jefferson game being bigger. I don't think the Grosse Ile will score 12.

Also Riverview played Smcc very tough last year. That game could be alot closer than people think.

Great job on the site. Love talking Huron league football.

  19. The underdog moniker will play well for GI. Opponents being "way to physical" and "Teen running room scarce" are well deserved opinions from history, but we're in the here and now. I do however like that mentality as that will keep the door open with opponents until GI proves otherwise. GI to win first HL game in many moons??
Thursday night FOOTBALL!…Strap it up tight boys!

  20. Obviously anything is possible but upsets don't happen too often in the Huron League. Was Crestwood beating Riverview an upset? Not really, Riverview won one game last year.

Did the View keep it close last year against SMCC? I guess you can say that. It was still a 2 touchdown game. Maybe Riverview played their best game and SMCC their worst. It is possible.

I hope the Pirates can keep it close. We could use that in the league.

Also, I know the fact that they haven't beaten SMCC since 04 has no bearing on this game but it does tell you one thing. SMCC has a much better program than Riverview.

  21. So you dont think Riverview will make a game out of this because of 1 bad quarter of football against Crestwood? Let me remind you they finished 1-8 last year. Every team in the Huron league last year scored over 40 points on them except for G.I. Flatrock and ohhhh yeah Smcc. Funny how the 2nd worse team in the league holds one of the best teams in the league to 14 points before half time and 2 touchdowns in that game came off of specials teams for the Falcons, now tell me how you dont think Riverview will be able to stick with Smcc until half time based on a statistic that they havent beaten them since 04? They stick with em last year, this year it should be even better because they have more expierence and better coaching. Theres things in sports called upsets and maybe we might see one this week, you never know, just like how noone expected Crestwood to beat Riverview, noone will expect Riverview to beat Smcc, im not saying it will happen just saying its a possibility.
