Huron League Thoughts and Questions

That sure is a lot of points the SMCC defense gave up. (scratch my head) That sure is a lot of points that the SMCC offense scored.

How could Riverview be so good on offense yet struggle so much on defense? (scratch my head again)

Airport’s playoff streak is now over.

Did you know the last time Huron beat Airport was in the fall of 1984?

Nice to see Grosse Ile hang on and win.

Jefferson’s Elijah Sandore has to be considered as one of the best two-way players in the league.

Congrats to Milan on their Huron League Championship.

It’s almost over but you have a rivalry game to play yet.

Does anyone here believe in curses?

Airport’s Scott McCormick should punt in college.

Can a Huron League team make a playoff run?

Is the Jefferson/SMCC rivalry game the same without Cisco?

It looks like Grosse Ile will still show up against Riverview

Is Jack still the best coach in the league or has Jesse taken that spot?

I am still amazed at how many people show up to see a 2-4 team battle a 3-3 team.

See what happens when you wear a headset and lead instead of being a glorified sideline cheerleader with the best seat in the house?

  1. Jefferson offense has had more yards than almost everyone they have faced this year. They have been plagued by turnovers and penalties. Without that they are as good as any offense in the league, except MILAN.

  2. These are just my comments, if you dont agree you don't have to leave a nasty note. Sandore is a good back, but as a GI parent who has seen SMCC and Milan, he is no better than the fourth back I have seen play so far. Without sounding like a homer I feel Vollmerhousen is just as good. I have not seen the 2 Riverview backs yet, but I hear they are likewise better. I dont mean to upset anyone. Also I do not think Jeffersons offensive line is very good either. Sorry.

  3. I do have many facts. I'm just not going to put kids names on here. There are some that are athletics based and some that are not. I'm talking of the ones dealing with athletics only. To me, not a good reason to change high schools.

  4. "Tired of all the transfers going around the state now with open enrolment. Kids are getting recruited in grade school to go to whichever school and the parents don't have to pay a dime. I didn't like open enrolment and I dislike it more."

You're beating a dead horse, and have zero facts to back up what you say, nor do you have any knowledge as to why some people use school of choice/open enrollment… Stop, just stop… SMH

  5. Jefferson has a very good offensive line and Sandore is right there with the best of them. I don't have the current stats, but some of the numbers he has put up this year have not been topped.
The line opens the holes and he gets the job done.
The O-line has been the bright spot on this team. Were not in the hunt because of our defense, and the many mistakes at crucial times.
This will be a great game, almost always is, regardless of records.

  6. Tired of all the transfers going around the state now with open enrolment. Kids are getting recruited in grade school to go to whichever school and the parents don't have to pay a dime. I didn't like open enrolment and I dislike it more.

  7. I don't know why most people on here are posting anonymously, but to the guy who said I am over coaching, you underestimate what kids can do. I coach in Colorado at a 5A school (2000+ students). I have 55 kids on my JV. It's a different situation than what I grew up with in the Huron League playing at Flat Rock. In the 7 games I've coached this year, 5 of our opponents run the spread and I have incorporated more coverage concepts than passes you will see in any given Huron League game. And because it is big school football, there is plenty of talent on JV (our Sophomore HB runs a 4.5 40 and is behind 3 Varsity HB's). So, I incorporate different fronts and coverages to combat the talent we face on a regular basis. There are things I can do with a big roster of kids going one way that I could never do in the Huron League. I admire and respect the Huron League and after having coaching in MI, IN and CO, there are better coaches overall in the Huron League. However, when you have numbers, talent and intelligence, why not coach to stop what the offense does well since you are already "tough, learn fundamentals and use speed?" There is no lack of toughness or speed when you have a big roster like mine. Besides, if a kid can learn the 5 plays Jefferson ran when I was in high school, then they can learn three coverages (2 deep, 3 deep and Man).

  8. Sandore is not the best back in the league. You have 2 backs at the view that are better. 2 backs at SMCC that are better. And a back at Milan that's better. The reason I say this is because all 3 teams have a better offensive line than Jefferson. If sandore had the line then the bears would be playing for a title or a playoff spot. One player dies not make a team. And that game won't even be close. SMCC by 21 easily.

  9. Sandore is the best offensive player in the league, but he also has a great offensive line. Jefferson had twice the yards of GI, but mistakes killed them. They put it all together, they will be very good.
In fact, why not start this now, I think they will be very good this Friday and give (hows that?) S m C c a heck of a game. Jefferson at home, who knows, Cisco may come out for this one.
Bring IT ! 7:17 we got to meet, you just keep hovering around here with that Jefferson chip.

  10. If you are running a nickel package at the JV level, just like you are over preaching, you are over coaching. If you're anywhere near the Huron league be tough, learn fundamentals and use speed. I can only imagine the young minds spinning trying to grasp some coverage concepts. If you're talking about taking out a slow LB on third down for a faster kid well, you're lucky you have some depth. Conservative 4-3 teams get steamrolled vs most running teams. If the spread teams you are playing against have any speed or talent they are playing on Friday night. They are not Penn St.

  11. I'm with Chris on this one. I watched the replay of the game last night on BTN. Michigan wasn't prepared, Devin Gardner hasn't progressed at all throwing the ball. His turnovers are ridiculous. Something is up with Taylor Lewan, He isn't the same player. We couldn't run off of his side all night. I thought we played better when he left the game. At the end of regulation we were technically in a nickel but we had our smallish LB's in the game making it more of a preventative defense. We should have blitzed the youngster. Up 10 points late and losing is on the coaching staff. What I don't get is Hoke didn't take any responsibility after the loss. "We just need to tackle better" is all you hear. Well then teach them better!

  12. Chris,

I agree, Michigan is the better team. However, they did not play that way. What I took exception to was your original comment that infers that somehow if Hoke had a headset on, that the result of the game would have been different. I believe it is a big leap to say that if Hoke had on a headset that the coaches would have made different decisions. From my experience as a coach, having someone talk in my ear is not going to make me a coach who calls a better game. In fact I have made some bad decisions because someone talked me into it over the headset. The headset only allows for better communication.

As for some specifics, I agree that Hoke missed an opportunity to call a timeout instead of getting a penalty. However, I don't believe that was the difference in the game.

Michigan was not in a prevent defense at the end of regulation. They had 4 DL, 2 LB and 5 DB. That is a Nickle package and is commonly used in passing situations at any point in any game. I ran a Nickle package the entire JV game I coached yesterday and we only gave up one TD after the Offense fumbled the ball on our own 15 (we are usually a conservative 4-3 team). The two defenders who failed to play the man (instead of the ball) in the Michigan game, giving the receiver room to adjust and catch the ball behind them are more to blame than the defensive personnel choices.

I agree Toussaint isn't the ideal back to pound it, however you should be able to trust your Seniors to step up and make a play.

I believe the pooch punt was the right call. Especially seeing how Gibbons missed field goals. The punter screwed it up by kicking it into the endzone, not giving your team a chance to down it.

I have no doubt that the coaching staff made mistakes, including Hoke. However, the players underperformed and I don't believe having a headset on your ears the entire game would have prevented them from making the mistakes they made.

  13. Let's just go with him trying to line up a perfect FG attempt from 40 ish yards out instead of using plays to try and make it an easier kick. Use your bruising freshman RB instead of your dancing senior RB when the running lanes seem to be minimal. Sending in a bad play call and taking a delay of game penalty (Hoke could have prevented that by calling a TO) late in the game then calling a play in which Touissant goes for minus 3 yards on 3rd and 15. So they try and pooch punt and net a whopping 15 yards on the touchback. Going to a prevent against an 18 year old QB who struggled every time you blitzed him. I could post all of the articles by writers who normally praise the likeable coach but instead are talking about how he blew this game. O'Brien seized an opportunity to win the game by going with a gutsy 4th down call instead of taking the automatic FG to tie. Please tell me that Penn State had the better team. You know they didn't, I know they didn't and everyone else who is a B1G football fan knows that. O'Brien beat Hoke with a team that would be middle of the pack in the MAC.

As for the Ecclesiastes talk, "Preacher" is in reference to the Latin or Greek translation of the word Ecclesiastes. I learned that in my first year of Latin but since many of us Lutherans are required to take Hebrew as well I could have referenced the word meaning "gatherer" but I'm sure your weren't trying to be a gatherer. 😉 I'm glad to know I have the clergy reading the blog but your quote from the Old testament didn't make sense in arguing your point. It was unnecessary. Enough with the religious points. I don't want to scare people away.

  14. Chris, what is your evidence that Hoke blew the game? You can't just make a statement counter to anothers argument without backing up your claim. You also said me quoting Ecclesiastes does not make me a preacher. How exactly? Again, this is a statement without evidence. Besides, I did not claim that I am a preacher. However, the Christian Reform Church has licenced me to be a preacher (not ordained yet). So, according to the CRC, I am a preacher.

  15. Did you really just quote Ecclesiastes to try and argue about Hoke blowing that game? News flash for you…..Hoke isn't wise and O'Brien isn't a fool. Nice try using the Old Testament but just because you use Ecclesiastes, it does not make you a Preacher as the book itself would suggest.

  16. I'm not sure how Hoke putting on a headset prevents Gibbons from missing 3 field goals, Gardner throwing two INT's and losing a fumble, Lewan getting hurt, and Toussaint running the ball like a 5th grader afraid to get hit instead of sticking his nose into the line and getting extra yards. How would he prevent Penn State receivers from making catches they never do in that last minute of the game? I have coached for over a decade and just because a coach has a headset on doesn't mean he is using it effectively. Many take them off when their side (Offense or Defense) is not on the field. Besides, he does have a headset but doesn't wear it all the time. He puts it on when he has something to say. I would rather follow a leader who speaks rarely with intention than one who won't shut up.

  17. There will be a lot of people disagree with this but that's ok. Milan could make a strong run. Might just make to the finals. But if they don't they are still going to compete for the huron title next year. The jv is pretty good. They will have some young skill guys but still should be strong. I also think Riverview and new boston will be up there. I personally think those will be the 3 teams to beat. SMCC is to predictable.

    1. Smcc is too predictable. Two o's in too, and yes they are predictable, they will be good. Milan may make it to the finals, as a HL fan I hope they do! But until "Jesse" makes a run or 10 after winning the HL there is no comparison. CC beats bigger schools every HL season and makes runs, Milan is the second biggest school in the league, and haven't made a run under "Jesse". When they do we'll talk.

    2. SMCC should be all caps since your the "spelling bee champ". Hide and watch. Milan will be a dominate team for years to come.

  18. As for headsets, I think you missed the most important part of that statement. That was the word "Lead" as in leader of the team! Name another BCS coach that doesn't call plays and/or communicate with the booth himself. O'Brien out coached the likeable Brady Hoke 10 fold. Penn State couldn't win the MAC.

lol chris was dying for a chance to say that. When they don't hate then you don't matter.

  19. Someone's panties are a little tight!. If you noticed I picked Jefferson to win against Grosse Ile. GI has been decimated by injuries. I believe they dressed 16 kids last Friday. A team that most likely would have went deep into the division 4 playoffs again loses three of their best players and I can't give them a little congrats. Sheeeeeeesh!

  20. Let me help you stop scratching your head. For RIV , Smith & Samuels appear to both be healthy, you can't defend both at the same time. Offensive coord looks like he convinced head coach to throw the football. Your not going to stop that offense. Here's the flip side. RIV "D" is just a "little" better than last year, why ? I'm told the leading tackler in dwr league transferred in, last years youth is a year older, front line is huge ???? Coaching ??

  21. 3:47. Why a Milan v RIV rematch ? Milan clearly is the better talent and coached team. They held mcc to 14 pts. Mcc put up 56 on RIV.

  22. Milan v Lincoln looks to be setting up as a nice wk 9 matchup. Both teams may need to secure a home game or 2 in the playoffs.

  23. Instead of cutting teams down, how about just a little congrats for their win and hope the best for them. Great job Huron boys! I am proud of you. Best of luck on the rest of the games!

  24. No way they get in with 5 Chris. You can hold out but it isn't going to happen. Records of the teams huron beat and would have to beat are 9-27. Zero of them being class A schools. No chance.

  25. Milan and Riverview would be an awesome playoff game. Both teams are strong, both have improved. I think the edge still goes to Milan, although it might be closer than it was earlier. Milan has a great defense. Everyone talks about the offense which can score at will. But the defense they have is fast and they don't give up big plays.

  26. Huron has an outside chance and believe it or not it is because Annapolis has 4 wins this season. They could have used a Jefferson win against GI. It is a long shot but still better than ZERO.

  27. I think Milan has a good chance to win the region. They have a mind set that will carry them thru. I will admit it will be tough due to lack of a bench. But it is possible. This statement might be more hope than fact but that's why we play right? Regardless, we will win the league and should make a strong run in the play offs.

  28. In the Monroe News today it was saying Huron still has playoff hopes with a 5-4 finish. I find that hard to believe since they have no quality wins. Their best win was Airport and they will probably finish 3-6. Any insights Chris?

  29. Agreed Chris, McCormick is one of the best high school punters i have ever seen. CC could make a run in the playoffs. Milan and Riverview will have a hard time making a run if they run into Truman or Melvindale. Congrats to Huron for beating my team for the 1st time since '84. Speaking of something that hasn't happened since '84, Go Tigers!!! EM
