SMCC @ Grosse Ile

SMCC (3-0) is coming off of a 40-7 thrashing of Huron while Grosse Ile (2-1) rebounded nicely with a 42-7 victory over Flat Rock. The Falcons won last season’s match up 29-8 and have won three of the last five in the rivalry.

Grosse Ile will welcome Andrew Mitroka back into the line up against the Falcons. Sophomore Justin Moores led the Red Devils to the blowout of Flat Rock. The defense was able to step up and play well and will certainly be needed against SMCC’s powerful offense.

While everyone seems to focus on SMCC’s powerful offense, the defense has quietly led the way for the Falcons this season. The defense looked very good against the two pretty good offenses of Tecumseh and Huron. Tha Falcons have used a solid scheme, good speed and physicality while giving up just 6.7 ppg.

Before the season started I thought this could be a real barn burner. I think SMCC is better than everyone thought while Grosse Ile may not be the team they were a year ago this time. The Red Devils do have a chance because of Mitroka and a pretty solid defense, but I think this SMCC’s game to lose. Prediction: SMCC 35 Grosse Ile 13.

  1. I agree, that's why you play the game. You never know. GI is a solid program, a great game plan can do the trick sometimes. See it in all sports all the time.

    GI 30 SMCC 27

  2. Theres plenty of state caliber football teams that get beat or upset, never winning their league or the state title. SMCC has had three in the last 10 years. Just a fact. Thats why you play the game. Football is awesome for that!

  3. SMCC thinks they are world beaters after beating Huron in a game that was a lot closer than what the scoreboard said. GI will be fired up tonight and shock SMCC.

Just like 2 years ago SMCC was up at half and GI made the correct adjustments at halftime and beat them. I think the same thing will happen this year, SMCC will get up early take it easy and GI will dominate in the 2nd half after they make their adjustments.

GI will surprise SMCC tonight. Mitroka will have an awesome game after some much needed rest last week.

Don't be surprised when the Falcons leave the Island with their heads down. SMCC comes back down to earth this week!

    GI 28 SMCC 27

  4. I disagree with all of those saying that GI will shut down SMCC. Do you know what kind of team you're dealing with? SMCC is ranked 2nd in division 6, and would be 1st if it weren't for Ithaca.

-They have undoubtedly the best defense in the Huron League. They shut down two good offenses in Tecumseh and Huron, allowing only 20 points between the two. From was I see, GI's offense is just about as good as Huron's, if not worse. I don't see any chance of them doing well against the Falcon defense.

-SMCC probably has the best offense in the Huron League too. With 3 threatening back in Lamour, Lako, and Carribino, it becomes very hard to guess who the ball will be going to next. Not mention the much improved passing game of SMCC. Windham can throw dimes and Vuich is a great WR.

With that being said, I think the prediction for this game was generous toward GI.
    SMCC – 42
    GI – 7

  5. My kids team runs the spread and so does 4 other teams in the league of 7 teams. It is very easy to teach as well. 1 back to hand off to and simple routes for the wr.

  6. No difference between the Full House or Straight T.

Im just trying to understand what you wrote… so I quote what was said, so you know what I am referring to. Then I ask the question. Your post didn't make sense so I wanted some clarification.

  7. Why do u always feel the need to re-quote and grade everyone elses comments. That's annoying. Just make your own comment.

The T is simple, my sons grade school team runs it. It is the easiest offense to teach and the easiest to make adjustments too.

SMCC is very good at it, especially the deception part, but it can be stopped like any other offense with the right plan.

  8. "SMCC's offense is very basic. If GI can read that often enough, they can load up the box on the run plays and line up there DB's to keep an eye on Vuich. Got to have a safety back to step up in case Vuich burns the DB. Not sure of GI's talent level on defense, but with the right plan SMCC can be stopped. Need to go over the X's and O's a little more when you play CC. But it can be done.

    Go GI !!!"

You seem to contradict yourself here.

If CC's offense is so very basic as you claim in your opening statement then why does one need to go over the X's and O's a little more when you play them?

Many people who are casual viewers of HS football confuse the T with simple, basic, plain.

It is however quite the contrary if you know football and scheme.
So many blocking techniques, so many blocking schemes, so many options as to who gets it and how. You cant find the ball half the time.

The Full House T is quite complex and beautiful in my opinion.

  10. 2:38 pm i think the post from 11:50am is SITOFN because they say "strap it up" and is a gi fan….also when i played at airport the week we played smcc we practiced we used a blue racquetball because of how small and easy it is to hide

  11. One word of advice to GIs defense.. CONTAIN.

I know being on defense, you want to bum rush the line and hit anything you see that may have the ball BUT there are 4 possible ball carries for SMCCs offense… contain and watch for the ball. And go towards it. Good luck to both teams.

  12. 5:38am had some good things to say. Discipline is what makes SMCC the team they are. It's why they can run their offense successfully.

    11:50am:
"GI offense is good and creates problems"
Huron's offense was supposed to be good, too? I don't know…I read a TON of comments saying that Huron was going to give CC a close game and the scoreboard said otherwise.

"…three TDs called back or taken away on calls against them…"
Discipline. Discipline. Discipline. I don't care how many touchdowns they score that get taken back, a holding penalty could have opened that hole for the running back.

This is a state-championship caliber team. They're on a completely different level. SMCC will roll, 42-14.

  13. If GI can cover all the fakes CC runs in their offense it will be a close game. Problem is CC runs their offense so well it's hard to tell who the ball carrier is.

  14. I'm going to go with the prediction that Chris made, and that's if GI plays well. During the Huron game you could tell Mitroka wasn't the same quarterback he was last year before he got injured. He doesn't seem to have the speed and recklessness that he ran and threw with before his injury, and after suffering another injury this year he may become even more, let's say careful about his well being. If that happens and SMCC gets up early in this game, you might just see an uglier score than the Huron game. Hey let's admit it, the only team in this league this year, as in previous years, that could be down by 35 at halftime and you'd still worry that they'd beat you with just the second half left to play is SMCC. The rest of the teams would be looking at a blowout, SMCC seems to look at it as a challenge to score 42 or more, and hold the other team to 0 in the second half. That's just good Coaching and something that is instilled in the kids by the Coaches, to never give up until the game ends. Hey, I'm from GI and even I can see that every single year an SMCC football team comes onto a field!

  15. GI plays well at home and has beat SMCC there. GI offense is good and creates problems. They had three TDs called back or taken away on calls against them in the Huron game. SMCC has problems when teams run at them. GI will run at you. So strap it up Falcons, the Devils are going to be miracle workers Friday night!

  16. 5:38, what does this have to do with anything? Besides, that is what you pay for. Public school is free. You have to get something for your money. No technology, no facilities, hopefully you will at least get some good structure and discipline. Some of us do that at home, but hey, whatever works for you.

  17. I don't have any affiliation with CC any longer. But during my playing days I went to both CC and Monroe High. Those 2 schools were night and day difference. Was the worst choice I ever made transferring schools.

I think the strict structure at CC makes for a better environment for learning and sports as well.

We were always prepared and always ready to play at CC, Monroe High not so much. Just a completely different attitude at the public school.

Football is a tough sport, discipline goes a long way. As a student at CC you are subjected to discipline at every turn if you weren't up to snuff.

When I went to Monroe, I saw kids wearing flip flops to class, I almost fell over. Do that at CC and you got sent home.

The environment at your school in my opinion can aid or hinder your performance, certainly off the field but I would say on the field as well.

In my years that was surely the case.

  18. Mitroka isnt the same this year in my opinion, was at the Huron GI game. Huron played good D but Mitroka couldnt get anything going. Is it the O line could be, just doesnt seem to be the same player.

  19. Mitroka will have to play the game of his life if GI is to hang.

I love cc's defense this year… fast and furious.

Funny things can happen on the island, is this one of those years?

  20. I like GI in this one. They laid an egg against Huron and they have much to prove. I'm not saying they're going to win but I'm confident they will keep it close and have a shot at the end of the game.
