The Flat Rock (my Alma Mater) Rams football team is currently in the midst of an 18 game losing streak. There are many over the last few years that have said silly things like, “Flat Rock is the worst team I have ever seen”, “they couldn’t beat a JV team” and so on. I have continually said that that was hogwash and that the Huron League is just a very good football league. I personally thought Flat Rock had some talent, little depth and were coached up pretty well over the last few years, but just couldn’t squeak out a win against the schedule in front of them.
I decided to do a little research and then have some fun with one of my favorite football websites, Calprep.com. During my research I found that there were twenty-six varsity football teams that finished 0-9 in the state of Michigan in 2014. Obviously one of those teams was Flat Rock. There were 7 class A teams, 13 class B teams, 4 class C teams and 2 class D teams.
What I decided to do was use the project a match up link on Calpreps.com to determine how Flat Rock would do against those other 0-9 teams.
Now for those of you who don’t know much about Calpreps.com, this site has scores from every state in the country and also uses a mathematical formula to project regular season games, playoff games and hypothetical games between schools the same year or even different years. Last season (2014) Calpreps.com was able to project with something over 80% accuracy; the last 5 weeks of the season and the playoffs.
Here is what I found:
Flat Rock finished with a 14-11 record against the other twenty-five 0-9 teams. They finished 2-5 against the Class A teams, 6-6 against Class B, 4-0 against Class C and 2-0 against Class D.
Here are the alphabetical results:
Allegan 28 Flat Rock 26
Ann Arbor Skyline 42 Flat Rock 14
Benton Harbor 28-24
Flat Rock 31 Benzie Central 24
Flat Rock 35 Bronson 19
Flat Rock 50 Camden-Frontier 3
Flat Rock 35 Comstock 20
Detroit Osborn 26 Flat Rock 20
Dexter 31 Flat Rock 21
Flat Rock 28 Dundee 21
Flat Rock 24 East Jordan 14
Flat Rock 35 Farwell 14
Gran Rapids Union 35 Flat Rock 20
Flat Rock 48 Hale 6
Flat Rock 38 Harper Woods 19
Flat Rock 31 Hazel Park 19
Holly 27 Flat Rock 10
Flat Rock 42 Pellston 13
Royal Oak 31 Flat Rock 21
Flat Rock 28 Saginaw 21
South Lyon East 35 Flat Rock 21
Sparta 28 Flat Rock 22
Flat Rock 31 Taylor Truman 24
Wayland Union 35 Flat Rock 14
Flat Rock 46 Wyoming Lee 7
This really doesn’t prove much because it is just hypothetical, but it does make me think that Flat Rock will get a win(s) this year.

Yes football is a numbers game. Huron will not be the doormat they were for years in the Huron League.

Flat Rock is Class B. Division 4.
Calpreps is fun, but hypothetical. It has 2014 SMCC beating 2014 LCC, which didn't happen. It also has 2014 SMCC crushing 2014 Huron, which did happen.
Do you think that is Ralfie from A Christmas Story?

Chris,
FR had a couple of good sized kids on their team last year? How have they developed? Or should I just wait for the team preview?

Whoever said FR would beat AA Skyline is just plain nuts. Skyline 100 FR 0. Unfair to pit those 2 schools against each other.
Flat Rock needs to find a good coach who will stick around and get the numbers up. 50 kids on varsity will beat a team with 30 quite often… its a numbers game. They need to follow Huron's mold. The youth program has turned Huron from the doormat into a league contender… it wont happen overnight but it can happen. Start now and maybe in 10 years, FR can be in the upper 4.

I don't believe anyone said FR would beat ann arbor skyline.
Football is a numbers game really ? Last time I checked both teams put 11 players on the field, Huron had 1 really good season with a big team but other than last season the weren't very good before that…
I think FR will get it together. I'm not for sure what class they are though. The one thing that no one is saying is that they come to play every Friday night. I am not saying they should leave the league, but if they are a class C or D school, maybe they should look at a different league. We teach are kids in order to get better you have to play better compitition. That is true but you also want to be competitive. I don't know that much about FR but the last 2 years that my son has played them they never stopped playing. Maybe they have some younger kids coming up that can help them. My hat goes off to them. I hope they can pull out a win or 2 in the league. I guess we will see. Good luck FR !
