Thanks for the nice words, 4:35 and #9 Dad. All of us, including 11:09 are ultimately on the same side, so no worries. See you guys in the stands tomorrow night!
Mr. KC,
I appreciate the comment, unfortunately your absolutely wrong. My sons and several others on the team give 110%, watch more film than anyone, first one at practice, last to leave, all take practice very seriously, would do anything for a team mate and their coach.
Its called being a freshman on the JV and not being in the click, well known as the others.
Part of life is also doing your best and getting crapped on too. Coaches tell these your men to hang in there, we will get you in, your a positive in the program, please keep playing. Obviously, if I allowed my kid to be any sort of slacker, I would not be on this blog almost everyday, very involved in local youth sports and an avid fundraiser for the program. Sorry sir. Your take on my situation is way off.
I have coached football and baseball for almost 15 years. Starting out in a rec league coaches are told all kids have to play 4 downs a game or a half at 4 plays on both sides of the ball. What ever the rules say is what they abide by. And for rec league I agree with that.
Once you hit that middle school age, all playing time should be earned. Just like losing playing time when missing or late for practice. That's the problem with kids today, and the parents are to blame. "My Johnny only played on kick off", well, maybe he needs to work and push himself a little bit more. Coaches do have favorites, I know, but a good coach is going to push that kid so he can get more playing time.
Most High School coaches I know will not even talk to parents about playing time. I know I would not. There is nothing wrong with earning your way. You will feel better about something you earned before it's just given to you.
Just my opinion.
And Coach Tom, who ever the person was that said the ridiculous statement about you, don't sweat it. We, true Milan fans, like and want to hear your opinion. We love football and love hearing everyone's opinion. Bad or good. That's what the blog is for.
#9 Dad
If your child isnt getting a lot of playing time, seek out the problem… Are they at practice everyday; are they actually taking practice serious, or are they hanging out with their buddies BS'ing and not paying attention to whats going on in front of them? Is there another player on the team that is over-powering and understanding the position better than your child? If you answered no to the first two questions, and yes to the last two questions, then that is why your child is on the sideline more, than playing in the game. Just because you show up to a game with a jersey on, doesn't mean you should automatically get to play a position. That's not how life works. >IF< i was a coach and had a team of 45, and only 25 of them were taking practice serious, and working hard and giving me 110% at practice everyday; bet your ass, the other 20 who just want to wear the jersey, would be sitting on the sideline looking pretty clean in their uniform. You don't reward kids for showing up, you reward them for practicing hard, and giving it their all and taking the game serious. If you're crying that your kid isnt getting PT, then look into the issue and dont blame the coach; they know what talent they have and they will utilize their talent, before their "favorite" student.
KC
To 11:09. I would like to know who you are? If you are actually part of the Milan program then you would welcome all the support you can get. That's ridiculous.
YOU ARE WRONG. He coaches the little guys so they get to your level someday.
How bout some respect.
Wow, I didn't mean to touch a nerve. Never said I was a high school coach. I recommend folks buy a game program to support Milan Athletics, but I won't be in it. I coach much younger kids and have for 15 years, now. They call me Coach Tom, and thus, my username. I'm starting to see kids I've coached on Varsity in recent years, and that's been a special thrill for me.
My observations are mine alone and come from my view in the stands, same as just about anyone else around here. I'm not mad, 11:09, and I'm not sure why you are neither. I love this program and have great respect for the coaching staff, even during the down years.
When I comment on a game, I try to explain why one team had success and why one team didn't. Often times, both teams do some things well and some things not so well but something tips the balance and ends up reflected on the scoreboard. When my home town team loses, it's not simply because they ran out of time. There are reasons. I give my take on them, and hope like crazy that they fix things up before the next game.
If you don't agree with my opinions, that's fine. Feel free to cite things I've said that you feel differently about so I can respond. We can have a discussion and the folks who didn't see the game can get a better understanding of what happened.
Thanks Coach Tom; wish I could see 4 games every week and I appreciate your commentary.
I don't think anyone thinks he is a coach. It's just a name he uses so people can identify his or her post. Nothing more.
As a Milan fan and someone familiar to our program, please don't associate coach Tom with our football program. I'm not sure u ever coached football for Milan. You want to throw your opinions out that's fine, but you never coached football for Milan under Coach Robb or Coach Hoskins. I've heard you question coaches and what not. Milan has a very good staff and you're entitled to your opinion about things, but everyone should know you have nothing to do with Milan Football. If I am wrong please share.
SORRY ON MY POST ABOUT THE HURON LITTLE LEAGUE FOOTBALL, T HEY HAVE 60 NOT 120 PLAYING IN THE JUNIOR HIGH.
FOR THE RECORD TO ELABORATE ON WHAT CHRIS SAID. HURON HAS IN THEIR INHOUSE LITTLE LEAGUE , 4 TEAMS IN THE FIRST/SECOND GRADE LEVEL, 4 TEAMS IN THEIR THIRD/FOURTH GRADE LEVEL, & 4 TEAMS IN THEIR FIFTH/SIXTH GRADE LEVEL. ALL TOLD APPROX 200 KIDS PLAYING FOOTBALL!!! ADD TO THAT APPROX 90 PLUS IN THE H.S. AND 120 IN THE JUNIOR HIGH. I THINK THEY WILL BE GOOD FOR A LONG TIME.
Here's a question some kids from my kids school didn't play as freshman didn't play as sophomores. Now there hardly playing at the varsity level. Should there be cuts ? Are the best the best or sometimes are some kids force fed into a program because of who they are? I agree with play the best. I am also competitive. At the varsity level you want to win. We all do .
The complaint isn't really about fairness to every kid or participation trophies.
Its more about bang for your buck. The kids I refer too played a lot in CYO and for first downers. Now a days coaches push working on sports a lot in the off season. So if a kid is busting his ass and not playing at football, why would he continue, when he could be playing in a fall basketball league or taking lessons for the baseball season.
You need a little paycheck for your work. Less and less kids care about playing for the love of the game or to just be on the team. Theres a lot of other options now a days and coaches need to keep their whole team interested and intact. When I coached other sports, if a kid didn't come back next season, I would talk to him and his parents about it. It was rare. Football, kids bale left and right.
Just my opinions and a general statement. Not at all a complaint about my kids play time. He's not as good as some of the others. That's life. But if you still want him on the team, you need to get his feet wet.
Hurons program sounds great. Very similar to the CYO. Nice to hear.
JB
Huron has a great thing going with their in house program. They have anywhere from 14 to 18 players per team and everyone plays a lot. They are getting some solid coaching on blocking and tackling. I watched a practice yesterday for a little bit, 15 players with four coaches they were doing blocking drills. I was really impressed. Lot's of encouragement from coaches. The kids seemed like they were having fun. I do know that many of the Huron High School staff have kids playing in the league and are coaches with the youth teams.
I guess my point is that they aren't all that caught up in winning in their youth league. It seems more about teaching fundamentals and creating a love of the game in as many kids as possible. I do know some parents prefer to put their kids elsewhere so they can play for a championship and glory, but to me that is more for interscholastic sports.
For the record, I don't believe in participation trophies for 5th grade and above.
Also, at least from my tiny corner of the world, these conversations and complaints about playing time are filtering down to the youngest levels of ball. I heard a story at a recent youth tackle practice about a family who is ready to have their kid play in another community (not in the HL and not known for football, FWIW) if they don't start getting more playing time.
Youth football can be very beneficial, but it's not just the kids who need an education in what the game is all about.
I'm curious if the players who are not getting PT are new to football in that school district. If not, there should be a track record of how much playing time they used to get in past seasons. Were they a starter on JV or in middle school and now they are behind someone else? Did the coaches of the younger teams rotate players in more than the varsity coach does? Have you watched the varsity team play in the past? If so, has the varsity coach changed the amount he substitutes?
Also, don't assume that just because a player or his team is struggling that the backups would do any better. Sometimes it's just a mismatch, either team vs. team or position vs. position. If your left guard is betting blasted into the backfield on every play, maybe that other team's defensive tackle is just a darn good player and would similarly blast the backup left guard into the backfield as well (or worse).
It is tough to accomplish, but knowing many kids that play football, the mentality now a days, is its not worth it if you don't play. Good or Bad, win or not, its the reality of the game right now. Why take the chance??
I disagree with everyone playing. It isn't rec league.
Putting "favorites" in that equation just makes things worse. The favorite better be a damn good player or hes no favorite of mine.
JB
In football, I believe all kids should get in the game at some point. Obviously, the better kids play a lot more, but all of them get on the field. I have 1 son who was fortunate enough to start almost every game of his HS football career. My second son is not so fortunate. He hardly gets on the field and already talks about not playing next year.
Football is the toughest HS sport there is. If a kid doesn't get on the field, he sure as heck doesn't want to put his body through the possible injuries that football can cause.(especially concussions) The 2nd and 3rd string kids are what make the first string better. If you want the 2nd and 3rd string to continue to play, get them in. Definitely put them in when the first stringer makes a mistake. Not to mention, to give the first stringer a rest, so he will be ready for the 4th quarter.
WOW, what an easy concept. Too bad most schools in the area DO NOT do this. The ones with winning programs do. The league is concerned with falling numbers (only 1 freshman team in league) perhaps this is one of the factors..
Please forward this to all Varsity coaches. Thanks.
JB
Looks like a couple of parents are angry because their kids aren't getting enough PT lol
RN
Yes, I would. I have the advantage of looking at things from a non-biased position of any sort.
Chris, as an AD, if you saw a coach clearly not playing his best, would you approach him and find the reason?
-bn
At the Varsity level its all about winning. You play the best.
-bn
I think that's true Chris for the most part. But I can say I have seen coaches play kids because of who they are or who the parents are. Can't say I've seen it here in Michigan, but have in Tennessee. I think coaches do have favorites, most coaches will do what it takes and play the kids who give them the best chance to win. Just my opinion.
#9 Dad
Agree with the comment "who the parents are." I think it happens more than people want to admit.
For those of you who wonder why certain kids aren't seeing the field as much as you think they should, have you asked the kids themselves why they don't get the PT? Those players have been to every practice and should have some takeaways from the day-to-day competition. Even if they don't agree with the coaches' assessment, knowing why those decisions are made can help players to target areas of improvement.
Sometimes, it just comes down to who the coach trusts more. Trust can be built by showing competitiveness, leadership, knowing the playbook/assignments better, avoiding penalties, putting in extra work in the offseason, and a host of other ways. Something has made the difference in the coach's eyes and I'm willing to bet the second stringer knows the reason why if they are honest with themselves.
Stop with the favorites talk. Coaches all have favorites, but that doesn't mean they play because of it. Coaches play the kids who they think in their mind give them the best chance to win.
RR struggled with AA Huron. They won't have the beef in the trenches to hang with RV
I agree with the post from Sept 12 2:35 . It is sad to see talent sitting g on the sidelines at Riverview the have depth at QB, RB,WR and it's not being utilized! They need to open their eyes and stop showing favorites and then things will turn around..a player should earn their spot not just handed to them!
River Rouge will most likely beat Riverview by 20
-bn
It is illegal in all aspects of football. I have seen it called numerous times in little league, high school and college. You can push the pile, but not the runner.
Ya the upside to the jeff Offense Was upside down for sure!!! you got me on that!! lol Don't know what to say. Might have to go back to the Drawing board and do it quickly before Milan
After watching GI, they are yes very average. Jefferson is horrible. Huron looks to be over-rated as a league champion which most would say was a reasonable expectation after their first few games. You lose to an average GI team with 21 players. Yes over-rated is the right word. Riverview has lost to the best two teams in the league and in my opinion should have beat SMCC. If you hold the Falcons to 64 rushing yds, then I would say you beat them 9 out of 10 times. I believe most would agree. Riverview should win every game left on there schedule with ease except Huron. And it's just my opinion that Riverview will beat them. It makes Milan and SMCC the best two teams in this league at this point. Riverview and Huron are right there behind them. Everyone else in the bottom tier. If you have watched these teams play, I think most would agree. SMCC and Huron this week will tell a lot. Then Huron vs. Milan next week. Let the games begin
Hope this helps. I've never witnessed it called because anytime I've seen someone attempt to aid the runner, it's a wall of players; nothing moves it so it does no good.
Michigan uses National Federation rules
Section 9-1
Penalty: Pushing, pulling or lifting the runner to aid his forward progress
Call: Helping the runner
Penalty Yards: 5
KC
Im pretty sure aiding a runner in that fashion is illegal in HS football as well.
I have never seen it called in high school. Not sure what HS rules say about it.
"Who would be surprised if Huron put a whippin on SMCC? If you know your football, you should be."
That should read.. "you shouldnt be"
-bn
Yes pushing the QB is illegal. Have you ever heard of "THE BUSH PUSH?" USC v NOTRE DAME.
I if the 200 plus yards in penalties Huron was assessed had anything to do with their defeat?Have you ever seen a penalty for a teammate pushing his QB on a sneak in HS , not once but twice called on Huron.
Huron wasn't called for pushing the quarterback, they had 1 personal foul called on a QB sneak and the other QB sneak they got a 1st down
Who would be surprised if Huron put a whippin on SMCC? If you know your football, you should be.
playing in parma and playing on the island make a big difference.
I'm sorry, but after watching GI play against Jefferson, they are not a league contender… Looks like NB is a little over rated. I think SMCC will beat them by 3 tds. Riverview will not lose another game this season. Held SMCC to 64 yes rushing and gave up two pass plays to lose. Dominated that whole game. Milan is very good after watching them last night. Marshall looks to be pretty good team killing Parma who GI played tough. Very interested to see how NB responds after losing to a pretty average team. They are not nearly as good as last year referring to NB. Good teams don't lose to a team like GI who is very average in my opinion. Riverview beats AP by 35. They just won't be able to beat good teams not being able to pass the ball.
So Huron (2-1) is over rated. GI (1-2)is average. But! Riverview (1-2) will not lose another game… I wanna know where you get your logic from. What does that make SMCC and Milan?
KC
I was at the FR/CC game as well and was standing close to the field. Yes the coached yelled cause there was a mistake but if u would have continued to watch the coach he pulled him close and patted him on the butt to show him he cares. So before committing u should have watched the hole thing not just what happened after the play was done. I'm neither a cc or fr grad just a football junkie
Bo Woody Knight YES
I'm sure guys like Bo, Woody, Bob Knight, Coach K and Tom Izzo are all considered asses then.
The coach from Flat Rock did seem like a ass but we don't know what was said in huddle or lockeroom. The kids may love him. He certainly was fired up which is needed for a program that is in dire straits. I went to SMCC and had tellers as coaches and loved it. You learn that it is not a personal attack but just their way of expressing point. Compare Windham to Lauwers. Both total different approach to do the same thing. Everyone is different.
So sad to see so much wasted talent on the Riverview sidelines. They rely upon the same couple of kids.
No offense but I don't believe you are a CC fan.
My father, brother and I all attended MCC. My son is a SMCC senior, and plays on the football team. Did I say anything offensive?
Not biased at all? Lol
Yeah pal unbiased un·bi·ased
ˌənˈbīəst/

showing no prejudice for or against something; impartial.
synonyms:
As I clearly stated I have no affiliations so I am by definition unbiased
Why? I'm not hiding who I root for. I'm sticking up for the FR players. I thought they played hard.
dis·be·lief
ˌdisbəˈlēf/Submit
noun
inability or refusal to accept that something is true or real.
"Laura shook her head in disbelief"

lack of faith in something.
"I'll burn in hell for disbelief"
synonyms: atheism, nonbelief, unbelief, godlessness, irreligion, agnosticism, nihilism
"in the film religious faith and disbelief are interwoven"
I'm not arguing the definition of bias. I just don't believe you were there with no bias .
I stated that I am a CC fan. I wanted CC to win. Just cut the kids some slack.
I was at the CC/Flat Rock game last night, and I am a CC fan. I have a bit of a critique of the Flat Rock coaching staff. I realize that football is an intense game, and you want to instill fire and passion in your kids, but you need to tone it down just a little. A couple instances: I could hear your play calling in the CC stands. Turn down the volume a bit, the kid is standing right next to you. Another instance: In the second half, a steady downpour, CC is punting. The FR is trying to field the punt, and as he zeroes in on the ball, he slips. While he doesn't touch the ball, it falls harmlessly to the turf, leaving the Rams with poor field position. The FR coach then screams at the receiver like he's a dog. C'mon dude, you gotta give the kid a break on that one. It was pretty wet out there. At least he didn't touch it and lose the ball.
Fire and intensity are good things. Constructive criticism is a good thing also. You're trying to build a program there, not discourage the kids. Give them a little break once in a while. They're good kids, and they definitely tried their best last night. Slap 'em on the back and tell 'em you're proud of them and we'll get 'em next time. Kids talk you know, and they can get their buddies to commit to the team for next year. But if they dislike the coaches, you could kill the team before it gets a chance.
While it may have appeared to you that Coach Reaume was overly intense during the game, as the dad of an FR player, I can assure you that the kids love playing for him and really respect him. He is a very approachable person, usually soft-spoken, and a teacher at the school. As an example, during our scrimmage this year, a player took a hard hit and seemed a bit "woozy" as a result. He sat on the bench for a good 10 minutes talking to the player, letting his other coaches run the scrimmage. I can assure you that he has the player's best interest at heart.
I'm still picking SMCC to sweep the league this year
They get 2 loses in league play this year. Huron beats them and so will Milan. And the defense that played last night for Da BEARs!!! They might beat SMCC as well.
I am not a Jefferson fan but I was at the game as an unbiased observer. Jefferson was the better team but they lost because they were too conservative on offense. From the stands I could see that the airport secondary was weak. Should've passed more then ran off of the pass. Not saying that always works but tonight I have no doubt it would have. Disappointing it really was not a sloppy game well played defensively by both even though play calling was weak more so by Jefferson. Bear fans have to be angry that game was given away. It absolutely isn't all on the coaches but part of it has to be. They were no doubt a better team to me.
-BM
#52 was laying the wood for Huron….really, should have laid the wood a little more and then maybe GI wouldn't have rushed for 260 yards!
First top 10 meeting in East Lansing since 1966. solid
Big win for GI.. WOW!
-bn
I told you Chris. The league NEEDS this page. Glad to see it here.
As a Mylan fan, I don't see Riverview losing another game this season. Big and strong. And wouldn't want to play them again. Very good team and some hardnose kids
You people are amazing. Over 1000 unique visitors and 3,000 page views today alone.
Pretty cool when I am sitting at a game and some fan from Milan over my shoulder is showing another guy scores from around the league at halftime. Where did you find the scores? The Huron League Blog was his answer.
Good night everyone. I'm going to sleep. Go State!
Milan will run away with the league. CC is a shell of last year and Huron looks to be overrated as well.
We were at the SMCC/Flat Rock game tonight and can't say enough about our hosts. Nice police Color Guard before the game and the FR fire department had their engine out there the whole game with its ladder extended with the flag hanging from it. The band did a great job with the National Anthem. The football team is small, but there's some talent there. They should hold their heads high, because they played hard, whistle to whistle. The announcer even announced all of the names of the cheerleaders, both squads! Let's hope their kids stick with it and they build something there. Don't lose heart! Class all the way around, Flat Rock!
Great post from a smcc fan maybe there not all bad. Great game your boy played good even though we lost still enjoyed the game
Thank you so much for the kind words about Flat Rock. While the goal is to win (and the coaches and players are working hard to become more consistent), and while I feel my son's disappointment after tough losses, I am proud of the Flat Rock community. Your words validate what I love about Flat Rock… Thank you again.
Let us Prey!
I have said it before and I will say it again, and I'm not delusional. It's all about the match up. RV did not match up well with Milan, oh and by the our JV team last year went 0-9, same boys on Varsity this year. Even though they lost to GI tonight, Huron is the worst match up for Milan.
It was a great team effort tonight for Milan. Only a bad snap that Milan recovered. Barnes is getting more deadly at QB. He did a great job and so did the line. Keying on #9 is not the answer. Milan showed that tonight that a game plan works.
Defense stepped up. Only 7 points given up. Not bad, not bad at all. Good luck the rest of the year to RV, hope Chase gets better quick. They could have used him. Might have been a closer game.
Up next, Jefferson.
#9 Dad
Interested to hear more about various match ups AND why.
Look at what each team runs in the offense. And if you take the time to look at their strengths and weakness, you then make up your game plan. Milan runs a spread with some good size up front with a great blocking back and a QB with arm strength and accuracy. A tail back that is fast, quick. You have a hard time defending that when your big like RV. Huron is built like Milan. SMCC is built like RV. I think Huron and Milan give SMCC and RV the worst mismatch this year. Milan proved that last night. Next Friday will be the first game for SMCC that will be a game with a team that can burn them. RV couldn't really burn them cause they play power football. I'm not saying SMCC will lose, just saying Huron will play wide open. And if SMCC wins in a close one or blows them out, I would use the same game plan against Milan. Talent does help and will also be a key. But with what I've seen so far Milan and Huron gives power football a lot of trouble.
#9 Dad
Yep, SMCC can't stop Huron's passing game. High scoring game, but Huron will torch SMCC'S secondary.
I fell like FR did a good job tonight they stopped cc in the first half and made them punt with all there starter and didn't give up and last year it was 40-0 and half good job Rams keep it up
Ok chief that's what you guys said last year!
Flat Rock only scored 12 NOT 13!!!
10:03 please you just lost to Grosse Ile, you guys said the same thing last year and look what happened.
Why do we have to state when the starters are out? Who really cares.
We will be sure to mention when our starters are out against you.
Jefferson beat GI; GI beat Huron; Huron beat Airport; Airport beat Jefferson. 5 way tie for 3rd place in the league right now. Gotta love the Huron League.
Sorry, four way tie. SMCC and Milan are 2-0 in league; FR and Riverview are 0-2.
Only 2 turnovers, but probably 200 yards in penalties. Killed drive after drive. GI played with a lot of hustle and enthusiasm. Bottom line, can't take any team in the league lightly.
Guess GI had an off week against Jefferson. Looked much better today. Milan, Huron, and GI will be battling for league title I believe. Riverview and SMCC overrated at this point.
Wrong -Milan and SMCC at this point.
There's not going to be any battle the league is milan's .
Let's here the excuses Huron. You were beat in trenches.
Bears-Jets game very ugly. Very predictable, conservative play calling on both sides, even before it rained. Pretty much pounded same plays all game until somebody didn't stay home or missed a tackle.
A team with some good offensive play calling would have torn them both up.
Guess that's why they are both 1-2.
How many turnovers in the Huron game ?? JS
How many turnovers in the Huron game ?? JS
Good job Devils!!! I'm guessing Huron got caught looking ahead. EM
Take Huron to kick Smcc ass..
Since they were practicing for CC for two weeks?
How many penalties on Huron tonight?
Bearz are still hungry! Maybe Jets Dline can save some post game celebration pizza for them, a few scraps. It's more filling than the goose egg they just served em!
It's called prepping for the game the following week
I was at the Milan game. They were the better team, but Riverview obviously missed Tyler Chase tonight. Not sure what happened to Huron tonight other than GI took them out behind the woodshed.
It's great to be a RED DEVIL tonight!!
So what about milan???…. Even liendmen didn't beat them by his self that was a team effort barns threw the ball really well and he ran and when needed trace ran the ball fastest man in the league #9 also liendmen only got the ball 5 times in the first half so what's that tell you?
It's Lindeman and when they key in on him it opens Barnes up to run the ball. It's called a team for a reason! Hello he did count for 2 of those touchdowns.
What happen to the upside Jefferson Offense?
Go bad bears
Kids played hard at Jefferson ..
I'll be back Monday. Lol
KC

So…. What is going on with Huron??? -_-
KC
So what. Other rumor was Jonnie loves Chachie!
Rumor is that Huron practice all week for Smcc offense..
Jets 0, Bears 0: Half
SMCC starters out in second quarter. Most of them.
Not exactly offensive fireworks at Jefferson. Scoreless at halftime. EM
How could Jefferson offense go from being explosive last year ..to become a very predictable and low scoring
because the coach doesn't know what he wants this class has not had the same offense for over a year since cisco
Coaching bad m.with seniors who was so productive last year .now with run game respectable..why was going on at Jefferson. Went to airport Jefferson game.what happen to the team that moved the ball on us last year..but thank you go jets
