Huron League Thoughts and Questions

Sorry to see Milan make an earlier than expected playoff departure.

Ida finally plays a competent playoff team this week.

Will anyone from Bedford dare travel to Detroit this week?

I’m sorry Chad Baas didn’t get a longer chance at Airport.

Who will be the next coach at Huron?

My early pick for Huron League Champ next season is SMCC, followed by Milan.

Should the blog continue to follow Ida and Bedford in the playoffs?

I plan on going to Detroit MLK to see Bedford this week.

Who will be the next coach at Airport?

Look for the Blog All-League and Player of the Year picks soon.

State still sux!

The poster is picking Ida to beat Ithaca this year. Thus, the narrative would be Ithaca's last two losses over the past 100 games would be to SMCC (already happened) and Ida (projected).

  2. Heard the news about Baas. Sounds like the AP parents should try their hands at coaching. Always is the case in recent HS sports. My coaches would be turning in their graves at how wimpy today's kids have become. It's always easier to make the right play calls from row 14 in the bleachers. It should tell you something if AP's JV guys aren't interested in the job and Might explain why Redmond got out of dodge. Sounds like deeper rooted problems in Carleton

    1. Airport grad here, well said, and I never thought I'd see the day it happened at my school. I left for a while and came back home and it's not the same school nor does it have the same support that I knew when I went to school there. Still hoping things get better.

  4. I have heard from numerous sources that the Flat Rock D coordinator will be the next Huron coach. He currently works for Huron High School.

  5. D1 – Cass will defeat Saline this weekend and make their way to the finals but Catholic Central seems unbeatable this year. Went into the year looking at their tough schedule as a way to prepare them for this playoff run. Tested teams win in the playoffs.
D2 – WLW is the favorite in my mind but would not be surprised if Lowell gives them a game. I believe Bedford will trip up MLK but get slaughtered by the Red Arrows. White is the Mr. football in my mind and theyll ride him, although Princeton commit QB will be the unsung hero, along with that strong OL.
D3 – OLSM is 5-4 but the best team in 3. GRC and Muskegon will play them in the final. Pimpleton is a stud but Josh ross is an uber-stud. Eaglets win it w/ the least wins by a state champ in MHSAA history
D4 – Winner of the RR-Country day game plays GRCC in the finals and i think it'll be Rouge. Grissom is a star and Rouge might blow em out, barring the performance of a lifetime from Yellowjacket defense. Rouge wins it at FF in a close game
D5 – Big shake up w/ Ithaca in this division. Never been the same power they were before the 2014 season leading up to the loss to my alma mater, SMCC. Watch out for Menominee coming from up North in this one, along w/ traditional power West Catholic. Good bet is on Ithaca but I'm going to make my big underdog pick in D5. Ida is a power-T offense led by stud running back Nick Levicki and Bryan Laux. Brandon Suydam, Kyle Parran and the OL are not the biggest but block better for this offense than a coach could dream of. Laux had 8 TFL in a playoff game last year as a DE. Ida beats WC in the semis and Ithaca in the finals. Ithaca's two losses in the last 100 games come to teams within 5 miles of each other in SMCC and Ida. Go bluestreaks.
D6 – With Ithaca gone, D6 is wide open. Traditional powers such as Clinton, Montague, Schoolcraft and Monroe SMCC are out of the way and newcomers Napoleon, Glen Lake, and Detroit Central get a crack at the title. Lumen Christi is the favorite and I can't see anyone tacking them on their way to the title. They had their test with Schoolcraft, with a 37-34 W. JLC takes D6.
D7 – I watched PW defeat Monroe SMCC in a big week 1 game in PW… offense and special teams is solid and have to have them as the favorite in a weak division 7. New Lothrop is strong after 3-4 years on the skid. Loyola vs. PW for the title and I dont know if Jared Smith and the country boys can run by Kailen Adams and that athletic Loyola defense. I say it's a toss-up but I'll go with Pewamo-Westphalia to cap off one of the best individual careers in state history by Jared Smith.
D8 – Muskegon CC is almost more of a lock than Hillary was on Tuesday night (too soon?) but the green and gold won't blown this one. Whiteford, led by QB Tommy Eitinear and RB Jesse Kiefer face MCC at ford Field in a blowout by Muskegon CC.

  6. Can anyone please tell me if they have the list of the all-league team that the coaches create? Does it go into any newspapers? We always find out the members of our team at awards night, but I would love to see the complete list of the entire league and don't recall ever seeing one. Thanks!

  7. Huron coaches knew about the house cleaning a few weeks into the season. Also heard rumors that Huron's AD might be gone too, interesting to see what happens in New Boston. Riverview will be the favorite to win the HL next year, with CC being the second favorite. Can't wait until next August!

  8. Let the 2017 Coaching Caroloul Begin !:)

    Airport Possible HFC's:
    John VanWashnova
Redmond (rumor is he has already said no)
Ryan Irwin (former Dundee coach who teaches there now)
Jason Mensing (was teaching there, maybe they could draw him back?)
Ryan Buttson (interim coach at Gibraltar Carlson this past year)
Kyle MacElvany (Dundee coach, maybe he wants to get back into the Huron League?)
Steve Robb (would be close to his home)
Ryan Love (Blissfield coach who has Airport connections)

    New Boston Huron HFC's:
    Eric Redmond
    Steve Robb (former D-Cord)
Jack Giarmo (I am sure he is on everyone's wish list)
    Kent Sikora
    Rob Hoag

Who would have thought that one day there would be a time were there is 10x the number of applicants for New Boston Huron than there is for Airport?

  9. Heard a rumor that Huron cleaned house and let all their coaches go… not sure if this is true. If it is true was it the AD just had enough? I know those kids work so hard (like everybody else in the HL) and I hope they get a solid coach to keep that program moving in forward direction.

  10. In my opinion (of course being a bit biased to view) for next year is that the standings will be SMCC and view at the top (They were by far the youngest teams and will lose the least talent. Both showed flashes this year as well) Milan who is another young team at 3 and I was thinking about as 1 depending on if Milan can reload with its playmakers. Huron and Flat rock at 4-5. Jefferson and GI lose alot of talent and may be in the situation view and cc were in this year. And than Airport last as they seem to care more about Jv records.
1 Smcc 2 View 3 milan with potential at being 1 4-5 Huron and flatrock 6 GI 7 Jefferson 8 Airport
    Hope that wasn't to bad.
    View hopeful

  12. I've picked them to be league champions a couple times. They seem to lose games they shouldn't, IMO. The results don't equal the results. Do you remember the 2013 loss to Riverview or the 2009 loss to SMCC? Kind of unreal how they lost those games and there are others.

I know it happens to every team at some point but they still seem to lose games they shouldn't more than others.

I do agree they have turned things around from what they were… that is obvious. Do they take the next step? That would be a league title.

    1. But Giarmo is a Michigan Hall of Fame coach. No reason Kifp wouldn't mind being humble for the greater good, until Giarmo would be ready to really retire (I understand he stepped down due to medical reason to have knee surgery).

  13. Sanderson never ran a fullhouse T. He ran Power I, with a lot of triple Option.

I know in the 80's Cisco ran wing -t. Maybe he changed it from time to time. But I remember Marc Maus, Bill Swengross(sp) and Ted Rodnicki well. They were all Wing-T at that time.

    1. Jefferson would incorporate both into the offense. There were formations and plays set up in wing T or tight T. If teams got it from someone, it was Cisco

  14. The T is not the Giarmo effect, at least not at Jefferson. Cisco ran that offense way back when and many others took to it, including SMCC. Riverview used to run it also when Lessner was coach, he did get it from SMCC and Sanderson. Not Giarmo. Giarmo did perfect it though, along with the maximum deception possible, dark green pants, terrible lights and a terrible field. LOL.

  15. Riverview is losing 2 starters on both sides of the ball and also had an injured starting Linebacker and tight end out the season who has been on varsity his freshman year i believe …should be an interesting team next year.

  16. I will say again watch out for Huron no matter the Coach. 12 seniors only 6 started great junior class & so many players. If they all come out probably 100 to 115 players. Hard to go too wrong with that many

    1. The most recent one of course, all the loses are in the past and the program is far different than in years prior, don't see how you can look dumb when they went to semi finals 2 years ago, and at least made playoffs the past 2 years

  17. Milan had 3 starters on offense return this year and we were co champs!! Jessie Hoskins is one of the best coaches in the Huron League period! Any of those parents that were running there mouths about wanting Jessie to step down apply for the job and you couldn't win 2 games with our team!! For all the nay sayers that count us out you might be surprised a bit!! We have a really good group of athletes that played the last 4-5 years with our Freshman CB are coming towards the Varsity starting next year! So don't count us out just yet I believe in Hoskins and he is great coach!! But good luck to everyone in the HL next year!! For all the people that keep saying how there JV team did!! Milan's JV team won 1game in each of the last 2 years!! Go figure!!

    1. Jefferson ran something very similar for years don't know why they went away from it but glad to see them doing it again

  18. Where does Giarmo end up? Word is he wants to coach somewhere. Will it be in the Huron League? Carlson? elsewhere?

Will Redmond go back to Airport?

If Giarmo and Redmond are back in the HL, that sure would strengthen things as far as league balance and who the favorites might be over the next few seasons.

  19. Well if nobody from Bedford follows the Team, the game still goes on. Besides just lock your doors just as I would and im from there. We just want to win the game.

  20. State won't get back to what they have been the last few years. Young talent doesn't play this bad under a good coach. They are just plain bad with no talent. Hi Chris 🙂
