Gibraltar Carlson officially hired Jack Giarmo as the new head coach of the Marauder football program. Giarmo last coached at SMCC in 2014, winning the Division 6 State Championship. Giarmo. Giarmo’s record at SMCC was an impressive 144-54 in 17 seasons. The Falcons made the playoffs 13 times during his tenure and made it to Ford Field 4 times.

Sadly I think you're right, not all parents but there are enough to make things bad
Airport coaching job is a puppet job. The big families there think all there kids will be playing college ball. No matter who coaches, they will get constant grief from parents. No appreciation there.
We will see how Jack does at the public school level. I do not think he will be as successful. Carlson is a tough bunch. Some will work hard for him, others will not buy into it. Many Carlson kids probably do not even know who Giarmo is. Anyhow, Good Luck. If he can create a champion at the public school level that will be very impressive.
I don't know about Airport but Huron is searching far and wide. They will hire a good coach who comes with experience.
12:37 the part about the great athlete part has nothing to do with coaching. But it an intangible that adds to the resume about the type of passion he will have for the school. Kind of silly as you say just because he has no varsity head coaching experience. Neither did Jack Giarmo. I think it worked out pretty well for him. Jesse Hoskins head coach experience? John Bodner head coach experience? Dan Kalbflesh head coach experience turned huron around? Buck reaume no experience flat rock had their best season in years. Adam Kipf smcc. So I think that is more than half that had no varsity head coaching experience and have all done a great job. So by your criteria none of these guys would be head coaches. And that seems silly to me. Again who else is applying for that job?
@1244 I said nothing about varsity coaching experience, I said varsity coaching experience in general and I was pointing out the hypocrisy of some Airport "supporters" who bashed the hiring of Chad Baas because of his lack of varsity coaching experience and how long has it been since Mr. Duffy was roaming a sideline. Again I'm just asking questions, I will fully support whomever is hired and wish them the best of luck as a proud Airport grad and former member of the football program. I just hope it's done the right way, if no one wants the job that is understandable that the man that wants the job gets it.
*varsity head coaching experience, my fault
I would agree, anybody that coached under Giarmo sounds like a good candidate to me. EM
Wow, whomever only gave an opinion. And I love your criteria, "he's the best athlete the school had ever had" so that makes you a good coach? What varsity coaching experience does he have? All I saw all year and have heard for the last four was how Baas didn't have any experience and he coach varsity football. I'm not taking anything away from the guy but you have to admit it looks a little funny. And "great athletes" don't have the track record at any level of being even good coaches, just my opinion. Happy Thanksgiving to Mr. Schultz and Mr. Half and everyone else on here
Didn't care for the reality public school opinions on Giarmo. Don't just print the good , print it all.
Played under Redmond and coached under Giarmo. That's a pretty good pedigree, I would say. Airport graduate and super athlete to boot. What's the hold out for?
What do you mean? My kid is not going to be in the NFL. You need to play him more.
Every kid and parent involved in High School sports should be grateful for that time and not continually jockey themselves around for the next level. Other than some bragging, the next level isn't all that great, it just prolongs your career and you miss out on valuable co-op jobs that the kids who aren't playing sports are eating up. Reality bites.
I would think Duffy would be a good candidate for Airport.
So you want to punish a guy who very well could be the best candidate because of who he is related to. Geez wake up people. If he doesn't coach at airport he will be on Jacks staff at Carlson. Count on it. So lose out on a guy who could be your coach for the next 20 years. You are 2-16 in the last 2 years. People are not going to be knocking down the door. Give it to a guy who will live and breathe it for the Jets. And the best athlete the school has ever had.
The Downriver League is ripe. He will be judged on how he does in the playoffs once he gets through the DRL. I see some matchups with Huron very possible. Maybe Carlson and OLSM will become frequent foes in the semi's. I know its asking a lot but I don't think they hired Giarmo to go 5-4.
Personally I think its difficult to ask a head coach to be connected to his players, parents, administrators, and staff; when in many cases schools don't either have teaching positions for them or other employment in the school district. Now maybe the reason for this trend is for the fact a disconnected coach is easier to dismiss then if they were a teacher and coach. Again that is a sad proposition. There are some could teachers out there that are also good coaches, but they just can't leave their teaching jobs to coach or they don;t want to split loyalty. I would think its tough to teach high school players at one school and coach at another. Especially within the same area or county.
I also heard Huron was trying to get one of the Grosse Ile coaches to apply. Apparently they want someone not connected with the program but with Huron League experience.
Very nice comment 6:17. Either your a coach or past coach. Because you hit the nail on the head. Too many coaches go unappreciated. Jack will do an awesome job.
It takes a special person to lead a high school football program. Its not like it used to be when kids showed up on the first day in late August after a summer of baseball or summer jobs or family vacations.
Dealing with kids and parents who have unrealistic expectations of their post high school careers,Administration who no longer has your back when the first sign of a parents complaint cause their kid aint getting his-" Where has the meaning of team gone " The threats of transferring every year to another school where the grass is greener.
Its a 12 month grinder with no breathing room and u are so much more than just a coach-You are a fund raising machine, a counselor , A guy who has to compile a staff who works an ungodly amount of hours all the while trying to be the best husbands and dads they can be while giving other kids who they also love more time than their own family receives. u also have to show your community that your kids give back to them so organizing outings that shows your kids care about their environment.
All the while making sure they are involved in weigh training and summer 7 on 7s and youth camps, as the coaches are getting ridiculed in the world of Facebook, twitter, and various blog sites.
Good luck to all the new guys coming in I respect everything u go thru !!!!
Jim Duffy will be the next coach at Airport
That doesn't look shady at sll
Ahh the rumor mill, gotta love Carleton, have to agree though that would even be a little bit of nepotism if that were the case. Good hire by Carlson, we'll see what Mr. Giarmo can do at a bigger school, won't make any predictions but it should be interesting
Huron threw everything at him. They must be reeling now. I know he was there, did a walk through, and all that. Any idea who they are looking at now?
Very good hire for Carlson, definitely will shake up the Downriver league. Any word on the coaching jobs at Airport or Huron? EM
Watch out Downriver League! It may take Jack a year or two to get the kids to buy into a team first system but he will be successful. There is no one in the region who gets more out of his team than Jack Giarmo. I wonder if any of his staff from S.M.C.C. will follow him to Carlson?
SMCC should have found a way to bring him back.
Grand slam
Damn I was just gonna post asking if you saw this. Would've loved to see what this man could've done for an improving Huron team. 😔
KC
Carlson is a much more desirable job than Huron.
I'm not sure about that. Huron made it to the semis two years ago. When is the last time Carlson made a run? EM
Right lol Carlson just has a nice turf field. Subpar team IMO
