Friday Night Victors Thoughts and Questions

Hats off to the Riverview Pirates!

Super impressed with “Big Play” Theo Day, glad he is headed to E. Lansing.

Great job SMCC rebounding from 1-3.

Sometimes your in perfect position and athletes just make plays.

Recipe for team success? Heart, love for teammates, a hatred of losing and a common goal.

Divine Child was as good as advertised.

How was traffic out to Madison Heights?

Sure was cold last night.

The coldest high school game I ever attended was November 12, 1982. Monroe vs Fordson @ Lincoln Park.

Madison appears to be a team of destiny.

Any word on game location for Riverview/Harrison?

Shout out to my friend Nic Ploucha, sorry I missed you last night.

I wish they would have asked me to be the color guy for the fox sports broadcast last night.

I bet their are quite a few kids down in Monroe ready to get to work with one eye on Madison.

Go Green!

  1. Thank you Chris and Gary for the work you put into the Blog. First, I am a Pirate parent and very proud of our team. This has been the best Riverview team in over a decade. Fellow parents/fans, relax with all of the respect comments. Who cares what people are saying, We know we have a good team and that's all that matters. Games are played on the field, not in papers nor blogs. Any given day, any team can win. Enjoy what we have, it's been a special season and no one can take that away. Those that want to predict Saturday's outcome, have fun!! One thing I do know, we will be ready to play and we will battle unto the end and THAT'S SOMETHING TO BE PROUD OF!!!

    Go BUCS!!!

  2. 5:18- RV's qb is expected to play on saturday 🙂

Thank you Gary for your vote of confidence. That means more to the team then a Detroit News article, you actually know this league and have watched our boys play. Hope to see a game preview for Saturday, would love to hear what you and Chris have to say.

  3. I said a week ago, Riverview would be underdogs in all these games, including this week.

Harrison is beatable. Just play your game, like you have all year.

Some have talked about Muskegon. Yes they are a monster. Riverview would be a true underdog in that game. No doubt. NOBODY would expect View to win that one. NOBODY. They are the best team in the state. But nobody thought you would win the HL. Nobody thought you would beat Carlson(except us here at FNV). Nobody thought you would beat DDC(except us). Now nobody thinks you will beat Harrison.

Do what you do, one play, one game at a time. I became a believer mid season. Backs are against the wall.

Would you want it any other way?!

Good luck View! You have made us proud. Keep it up!!

  4. Trust me, parents are complaining about the rankings/coverage/predictions way more than the players. The boys don’t care. They want to go out there, play hard, and earn it all on the field. Parents getting way to wrapped up in the stuff off the field that doesn’t really matter.

  5. @4:08 First go back and read your post. That is some fine English. Second I said you have earned respect. What are you trying to get respect from a computer that formulates state rankings. Winning doesn’t earn you respect. Being a class program on and off the field earns you respect. Which my post said earlier you have done. You probably took me saying Muskegon will beat you as disrespectful it wasn’t that is just my opinion of the out come of the game if it happens.

  6. It cracks me up how little respect Riverview gets from the local papers. If you go to detnews high school page they have a story on Harrison. Last week I saw a story on Divine Child and before that Carlson. I guess you have to have a DI recruit to get press clippings. Keep doing your thing Riverview! EM

  7. @151 All we've heard is you aren't beating them or them definitely not
But what have we went out a did not just beat dominate 2 out if the 3 and pretty much in total control of the other
If we end up playing Muskegon so be it, yeah there good I'm not saying they aren't, we will give them a battle and see where it lies at the end… no ones giving us respect either you can't say that go look at the state rankings teams we've beat are still higher than us lol

  8. Gary and Chris thank you and so many of us enjoy and appreciate the blog. Please don’t let the negatives take away from the hard work you both do. It is sad that there is always a few people out there that make things negative. I hope you both know that many people read this, and may never even post, but enjoy the extra enthusiasm it brings to the season.

  9. Dan don't worry about what people say on here. It is 90% negative all the time. Just a place for people to grip about things.

  10. @9:07 Riverview has earned plenty of respect and well deserved. But their is not a chance in hell of you guys beating Muskegon. Muskegon is the best team in the state.

  11. @12:54am look Riviews #21 didn't play because of a broken collar bone and the starting SS went out before half and the QB went out in the 3rd quarter and 2 starting lineman went down..it's called next man up!! Riverview don't have any D1 players! But what they do have is all around good players that play well together.. I don't want to hear 3 wr and a CB didn't play and that's why Riverview won. D.C was ranked #27 in the state please don't use that as an excuse or make it seem like Riverviews win was by default.

  12. There's always an excuse, what will be it for this eeek after we knock off Harrison
Hmmm, let's see the game was to early in the day for them….
Nah, it's rainy and had a hard time hanging on to the ball
    Blah blah blah
No respect but that's OK, we will after the next 2 weeks!!!

  13. It’s good that the game is decided on the field and not on paper or people’s opinion. Any given week, anyone can lose.

  14. 9:28 thanks for saying that, I was waiting, that is the fuel that fires the View. Count us out, think because some schools have PAST reputations that makes them better. We have no stand outs, no single player wants credit, what people don’t realize is the power of a team playing together will beat individuals all day. Divine Child is an Incredible team many athletes going to D1 schools MSU U of M Carlson Powerhouse D1 Athletes, Trenton Solid Team yet they all have one thing in common they got hit by the View Choo Choo. I’ll take the underdog role all the way!

  15. Dan… Good game last week, hard fought but DC was not deep… Heck they had 3 of 5 starting receivers out and starting CB.

  16. @9:28 hasn't that been the case for the past 2 weeks….every team is to deep, to fast , to big…blah blah blah..our boys like being the under dogs!! GO BUCS!!!

  17. View fans come in droves, DC was insanely packed
The maroon monsoon student section is second to none
No matter we're we play the stands will be full!!!

  18. I’m surprised Dearborn High School’s stadium wasn’t considered as the site for Harrison vs Riverview. Fairly equidistant: 20 Miles/20minutes give or take for both schools, and decent for family, friends, and fans to drive out. Anyways, I understand there are certain circumstances to consider in preplanning, but still, Rochester is a hike for Riverview et al.

I love this blog by the way representing all the fine teams of The Huron League!

Riverview Alum ‘04 and alum/player on the 2002 Championship Team!!! “Breakdown, BUCS!!!” Go Riverview!!

  19. Adam well put the beauty of the View is deep across the. Board Cam is invaluable incredible back AND Linebacker, Kyle Naif comes in Seamlessly. Dom Wood goes out incredible QB Hunter comes in you would never know there was a substitute. This team is a team in every. Sense of the word, we are. Deep at every position and our core (lines) are strong. The defensive backfield played the best I’ve seen. No reason we shouldn’t be at Ford Field.

  20. State rankings out the View move to 37 from 62 Divine Child goes from 29 to 40 FHH goes from 37 to 30 the BS lies in we beat the 29th ranked team we should at least be 29th FHH beat the 47th ranked team a team far worse than them they should have gone backwards in the rankings these. When we beat jefferson we went back 10 spots, this system is seriously flawed. Not to mention the are. 7 spots ahead of us and we have 10 more playoff points then them. HURON League gets no respect!

  21. Julia – love what’s you wrote and it’s 100% true!
@8:12 – he’s a great kid:player (Julia’s son) and while he has been a huge part of the team the strength of Riverview is its offensive/defensive lines. As each game goes on they get stronger while other lines tire out. While Cam, the Zacks, Naif, and Wood can certainly finish a play better, I think Chris, Gary, the corpse of David Bowie and I could rush for 200 behind that line!

  22. Gary or Chris. Can one of you tell me what happened to the Rogers kid? To me, he is the best player on that Riverview team and super impressive that they beat divine child without him. Hope he can come back

  23. Craig, semi final sites are chosen well before they know what teams are playing. They do the best they can to find the closest spot, once they know who is in. Keep in mind there are many teams to consider.

SMCC has driven nearly 2 hours, over 110 miles to play their semi final games.

  24. Gary, Rochester is an hours ride from Riverview and 40 minutes from Farmington Hills. Common sense would say put the game in between Riverview and Farmington Hills…….which Rochester certainly isn’t. Lots of more reasonable venues in closer proximity to the schools would make more sense.

  25. Keep in mind that "neutral site" doesn't and isn't intended to imply that the game will be in the middle of the 2 opponents. Riverview fans will remember travelling to White Lake, which was much further north than both Riverview and Jackson, to play Lumen Christi in 2002. Lakeland HS was over an hour from both schools and certainly not in between them, but it was the best suit.

The MHSAA finds an eligible field that makes a reasonable amount of sense not only for the two teams playing, but also for the other 15 games going on that day. A 35 minute drive for one fanbase vs a 55 minute drive for another is hardly an issue when you have other match-ups where the schools are separated by hundreds of miles.

  26. I would agree with that. Best team over last 3 years, yes. However he said "many" years. Again, keeping it real. Not wanting to slight those who actually have been good for many years.

I think they will win it this year and that would be fabulous. And you know I love the double wing, so for me, I wouldn't mind adding them at all.

Grodi and I are currently bartering to cover Whiteford on 98.3 for the last 2 games.

  27. With all due respect Gary, Whiteford going 34-4 over the last 3 years with a trip to Ford Field, a semi-final visit and another one that may end with a state title is impressive as anyone in the Monroe County Region has ever done. SMCC went 33-6 from 2012-14 with the state title and went 33-7 from 2002-2004 with no state title. Also, 32-3 with a state title from 1990-1992 is great, as is Jefferson's 30-3 from 1992-1994 with a title, but certainly a different era of football from last century. If Whiteford goes on to win the title, 36-4 over three years would be a huge accomplishment and I would argue the best ever in the area and the numbers would back it up.

With that said, we don't cover Whiteford because I know absolutely nothing (except for above) about them or the teams they play. I don't think I have ever been to the school or town where the school is located. It's not on purpose, just never been over there. If someone wants to step up and cover those teams from over there, I would consider adding them.

I do hope Whiteford wins the state title. It would be great for a somewhat local team to win states and it would establish Whiteford with arguably the best 3 years stretch in Region history.

Wait for it people……here it comes.

  28. While Whiteford is certainly a top team this year. Probably the favorite to win D8. You are slightly off on a few things you mentioned.

Whiteford had missed the playoffs 11 times since 1990. Not 4.

Best team around for many year? Again, great last 4-5 years but I'm not sure that qualifies as many years. If you go back 10 years. Whiteford has 13 playoff wins. That's good! But another team we cover has 24 wins over that same span. So the best team around comment. Eh, probably not. However, quite good.

Not trying to burst the Whiteford bubble. They are very good. Just trying to keep things real.

  29. Wheres the love for Whiteford. Best team around for many years. Missed playoffs 4 times since 1990. Hopefully you will consider them next year. A very good program with a lot of fans who would comment on here. Hopefully we are headed to Ford Field yet again.

  30. When you look at the max Preps for the riverview / Harrison game, it shows riverview on the right side so possibly the game could be at riverview
