Thoughts and Questions

I still don’t get it.

Who cares?

Championships are built on defense.

Vikings come up big late.

Growing pains for young guns in Erie?

Will Garden City re-up with Flat Rock?

That was a solid win for Grosse Ile.

Uh-oh

Ida broke out a can.

See above

Big Reds dominated for three quarters.

Trojans need to clean up penalties……. or stay out of Carleton.

Riverview appears to be reloading.

Speed kills…..well not this time.

Bulldogs Seem to do enough to make the playoffs every year.

Ho-hum

If you’re looking for the answer key. I talk about each team in alphabetical order.

  1. That was not a knock on the coaching staff by no means I totally respect and like the Flat Rock coaching staff and I do not have a child on the team I just follow the Huron League football and believe they have the talent to seriously compete this year and next. I feel as though the program has made leaps and bounds and will be very successful. These coaches are second to none I just said that once they reel in the qb and settle him down they will be a wrecking force, solid tight end, exceptional receivers, stud qb and speedy rbs. As for the defense they are solid with one of the best linebackers around and solid safety play amd a young defnese line thay will only get better. So if that is pointing you misinterpreted me.

  2. Ah it’s the parent credo. When you win it’s the kids and the talent. When you lose, it’s the coaches. It as regular as the sun rising in the east and setting in the west. You have some of the best coaches around and you don’t even know it.

  3. Although I am very excited about the potential for the Flat Rock Rams this year and the ability they have to become a very relevant team with the array of talent surrounding the team. The team as a whole is fast and explosive and can break a long run or a deep pass on you at anytime. The defense is solid at middle linebacker and need to utilize their speedy safeties and corners on the blitz to be successful. As for the offense from what I see they may have the most talented bunch in the league but not being used as such receivers are speedy and can catch the rock the running backs are speedy and shifty and qb a baller. The only thing that will stop this team will be coaching they dont seem to utilize all their talent although their qb is a ultra stud allowing him to run the the ball on every down is a sure fire way to disaster if they plan on winning they must reel him in and play as a team. When and if the coaches do that this team will be competing for a state title by thr end of the year and next…

  4. SMCC is renting Navarre field from Monroe Public Schools and you honestly think they have someone in a back room of the maintenance building controlling the brightness of the lights? The comments on this blog continue to fascinate me. If you think the lights at Navarre Field stink, say that. But suggesting they stink because the teams that play there have control over anything other than operating the score board is a joke. Look around next time you are there, you are surrounded by reminders that you are in Trojan territory, whether you are at an SMCC game or a Timberwolves game. Wake up and grow up please….. If you win is it going to be because the guy in the maintenance room fell asleep before he could tamper with the lights? Come on….

  5. I feel in the HL every game both teams has a chance to win. SMCC is tough at home as they have the lights turned down low to help them hide the ball better in their Offense! Both teams are going to be real solid this year and I believe it'll be a dog fight!! I'll be rooting for the Big Reds!!

    Big Bob Milan

  6. Garden City would be silly to not re-up with FR. FR cupboard is bare after this year, with the exception of #9 at QB.

  7. Got to win 6 of 8 Airport. Got Riverview, Milan, SMCC, Flat Rock and Grosse Ile yet to play.
Object is to win 6. I still don’t get it.

  8. Gary could be right about Bedford. Monroe has more talent, not sure they're as disciplined or as well coached as Bedford but this is the Trojans year to beat The Mules

  9. A GOOD BRIDGEPORT DEFENSE CONSISTED 3-5 BIG BOYS UP FRONT, 4 GOOD SIZED ATHLETES, AND
4-5 BIG FAST D-1 TYPE FOOTBALL PLAYERS, THAT ALL HAD A MEAN STREAK IN THEM KIND OF
LIKE RIVERVIEW WAS LAST YEAR. NOT ENOUGH CREDIT FOR THE WIN GOES TO MILAN'S FIRST STRING DEFENSE. THEY STOPPED BRIDGEPORT'S (SAME PLAYERS WHO PLAYED DEFENSE) NOT NECESSARILY WITH GREAT INDIVIDUAL PLAY BUT WITH A WELL COACHED AND DISCIPLINED DEFENSE. I NOTICED ONE PLAYER WHO HAS BEEN MILAN'S BIG TACKLING STUD THE LAST TWO YEARS HAD ONLY 5 TACKLES- THE REASON WAS BY TIME HE GOT THERE AND HE CAN GET THERE
THE TACKLE WAS ALREADY MADE. MILAN'S DEFENSE HAS PICKED IT UP A COUPLE OF NOTCHES FROM LAST YEAR.

  10. Frankly, I don’t think anybody in Airporrs program cares if anyone gets it but then, they obviously did it for a reason

  11. I would venture that’s youth football. Which I understand. These kids can learn a lot by playing flag football and other things prior to age 10 or 12 instead of strapping on the helmet at seven or eight. The numbers for high school are 2% I look those up to the national Federation of high schools they do participation rates every year. They use the data from the state associations which we all fill out every year. The thing that I find interesting is the amount of small colleges that are adding football. Look at all the NAIA schools in and around Michigan who have added football. Lawrence Tech, concordia University in Ann Arbor, Siena Heights, Davenport University and others. Football isn’t dying . It does need to re-define itself a little bit though. I remember saying to my dad nearly 20 years ago that professional football would kill itself if these players kept getting bigger and stronger. The human body can’t stand up to that pounding.

  12. Channel 4 did a news report on football and it stated football participation is down about 7% nationally.
Report was on maybe 2 or 3 days ago.

  13. I don't know how to post link from phone but simply go to nfhs.org and you will find it. It is under article listed high school sports participation increases for 29th year.

  14. I found some numbers. Numbers have dropped about 2% over the last year. A lot of that is due to the negative reporting of concussions. Some of it is probably due to kids not being willing to just be a part of the team because of lack of playing time. Although, maybe someone can argue it is because of our blog.

  15. 21,000 I would
Like to see the link to that also. The numbers are down though. I am convinced the smaller schools will struggle to field football teams in the future. Kids will then start to flock to the larger schools to play football.

  16. High school football participation is down 21,000. Enjoy the blog while you can and stop bickering with each other so much. Let's watch the impending extinct
Ion of football as friends not enemies.

  17. I’m not saying Bridgeport doesn’t have a solid defense. But where is all hype around it coming from? They are a historically below average team. They went 6-4 and had their first winning season in years. I think that says something. Milan played well. But they didn’t play Muskegon.

  18. I looked at the game stats too. I saw that Milan threw 34 points on the board. Guarantee they don't put up that much every week in the HL.

  19. Couldn't make it to any of the games this week, and I know you don't care but I have an opinion also. This is what I came up with. Grosse lle played a worthy opposition and came up with a huge win to start of their playoff run. Jefferson is Jefferson. I think everybody knew before a snap was taken that Airport bit off way more than they could chew. CC shocking to me that game was that close. View won big, but Romulus is not good. Woods is a player to watch. Milan played a very good team in Bridgeport and it sounds like they ran into a solid Bridgeport D. The main topic of the blog seems to be if Bridgeports D is or isn't that good. I looked at the game stats. This should tell you how good Bridgeports D really is. Can you tell me the last time a HL defense held Hines and Aeschbaker under a 100yds rushing each or under 200yds rushing combined? Can't wait for CC vs Milan next week. As I believe Milan takes a big step to a HL championship. JBR.

  20. Airport reached a bit, but I think the experience will help later. Monroe might be helped too with the confidence.
Opposite can be said for FR giving up 0.
GI is my #4 going into Huron league play. Could all change after next week though. We will see.
    Jefferson I pray wins.
    Huron too.
CCs 2nd half adjustments prove again they have a great staff.
Milan's win proves again they always seem to have 2 or 3 of the top 5 players in the league. Lindeman, Barnes, Furtney, and now Hines and Aeschbacker (yes I know I just messed his name up).
I still dont know why everyone hated on a large win by View. Yes, Romulus was not the same team it has been the last 2 years, but a win that large is a win that large

  21. Airport had to play Monroe because Dundee did not want to play us anymore. I know our AD contacted a ton of schools but no one wanted to. I take that as a compliment to our program when coaches already don't want to play us. If Airport really wants to get back to their glory days and be a contender in the Huron League, they need to play games like this. I for one hope they continue the series!

  22. The holding penalties went like this. Monroe has an offensive line that weighs on average probably 260-270 pounds. When they go downfield to block kids that weigh 140-160 pounds and those kids are trying to get around them to get to the ball carrier sometimes it looked like holding. It’s hard for big linemen to consistently block smaller quicker kids play after play without grabbing onto something. From the Airport sideline I saw holding everytime a flag was thrown. On Monroe’s sideline apparently nobody saw holding. All they saw was a bunch of referees that graduated from Airport. C’mon people!!!

    The Troll

  23. Hey if you can do a better job then the referees that are out there get you a whistle and Striped shirt and register with the MHSAA and become one!! There is so much that goes on out there and they are human and can't see everything that you do!! lol I think the only football team in America that hires referees to cheat is OHIO STATE!!

    Big Bob Milan!!

  24. I’m from airport and I know why. Because we thought it would be a fun game. Were we wrong? Obviously. Did we know that they were gonna be bigger and faster? Yes we did. Did we care? Not really. Did airport come in over confident and cocky? No. The staff and players respected Monroe. It was a merely a test to see where airport stands and where Monroe stands. Airport had nothing to lose. Airports staff did all they did to get them ready. Although airports staff is not happy with the the result they are happy they did not get scared or back down from Monroe and they competed

  25. Chris most of Carleton agrees with you! We’re lucky we didn’t get beat up very much. Our young men played a good game. We’re proud of them! Keep your heads up Jets! This week learn from mistakes and prepare for your next opponent! RB

  26. 99 percent of the coaches and parents don’t get it either Chris. I was all for being Mr. Positive about the game and I honestly believe the Airport players were pumped to play it. But after the first drive when Monroe moved the ball at will down the field I knew it was going to be a long night. Like I said before, Monroe could’ve played the 2nd string backfield the entire game and would’ve had the same results. If you look at years past when Airport was contending for league championships they played a Bedford team. Not sure what year it was but Airport got beat pretty good. Fast forward to the rebuilding of Airport football and you schedule a team that is possibly the best team in Monroe County. I watched our runningbacks get slammed so hard I didn’t think they were getting back up. It’s all risk and no reward when you schedule a team like that.

    The Troll

  27. Straight forward…..I don’t understand playing Monroe. If it was the only game available, I would get it. Makes no sense, at least to me, to schedule a game against what everyone knew was going to be a big, strong and talented Monroe team. I just thought it was over ambitious.

As far as the refs….. that was tongue and cheek.

  28. I THOUGHT THAT COACH HOSKINS AND THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR (JOHN PRIFOGLE) FROM MILAN SHOWED A LOT OF CLASS WHEN THEY RENTED TWO BUSES TO TAKE THE JV, VARSITY AND CHEERLEADERS TO THE BRIDGEPORT GAME. THE 200+ MILE ROUND TRIP WOULD HAVE BEEN REAL TOUGH ON THE KIDS IN A REGULAR SCHOOL BUS. INSTEAD THEY RODE I STYLE. CONGRATULATION ON YOUR WIN OVER BRIDGEPORT. THEY HAVE A LOT OF SIZE, COACHING AND TALENT UP THERE. THEY WILL GO A LONG WAY THIS YEAR AND SO WILL MILAN.
