Despite a tough 59-0 defeat at the hands of Ottawa Hills, the Erie Mason Eagles coaching staff is beaming with pride over their team’s determination and grit. Down 51-0 at halftime, the Eagles could have easily given up, but instead, they continued to fight, with many younger and junior varsity players making significant contributions.
“We’re proud of the fight our guys put up despite still facing multiple injuries,” said Coach Steven Bowers. “They didn’t let the deficit or running clock deter them in the second half.”
One bright spot for the Eagles was junior Bowie Jacobs, who made his first start at quarterback after an injury forced a position change. Jacobs completed several impressive passes, demonstrating his potential as a signal-caller.
Senior Phoenix Stefko also impressed, adapting seamlessly to new positions on both offense and defense. He hauled in several crucial catches and ran the ball effectively, leading the team with six receptions for 50 yards.
Sophomores Blake Herrera and Leroy Cuykendall made their mark, with Herrera snagging two receptions for 40 yards and Cuykendall making a highlight-reel leaping catch in the first quarter. Junior Brody Koehl also made his first start at wide receiver, adding depth to the Eagles’ offense.
On the ground, Logan Goodin led the team with 37 rushing yards on 15 carries.
Defensively, Stefko and Logan Goodin stood out, recording three and four tackles, respectively. Sophomore LB Lucas Neely added an interception.
With the loss the Eagles drop to 1-3 on the season and will host 2-2 Advanced Tech in week 5.
