By Chris Schultz and Frank Vajcner
Each week, Chris and Frank will give their thoughts on our blog teams. For the most part, one will generally keep things on the rails, while the other goes a little off the wall.
Airport
Chris: Deja Vu?
Frank: Better result, but it’s never easy when your competition is on another planet.
Bedford
Chris My apologies to Kicking Mule assistant coach Wilkinson for my accidental profanity-filled text to the wrong person.
Frank: Mules just ran into a buzz saw. But I have to give a shoutout to my cousin, Kaden Eischen, for getting a pick-six.
Carlson
Chris: I’m surprised Taylor scored
Frank: No Izaiah Wright? No problem.
Dundee
Chris: I so want Dundee to excel in football
Frank: Special teams mistakes will kill you more often than not.
Erie Mason
Chris: Personally not a fan of Saturday games
Frank: Eagles have probably seen enough of Ohio teams.
Flat Rock
Chris: Over 6,000 yards is kind of ridiculous.
Frank: Graham Junge still cooks.
Grosse Ile
Chris: The schedule makers were not kind to the Red Devils
Frank: It’s gonna be a looooooooooooooong season on The Island.
Huron
Chris: I still can’t figure out the Chiefs
Frank: Chiefs get off the schneid.
Ida
Chris: I can’t imagine Hudson loses at home very often. I probably should have thought about that before I took Ida
Frank: I still believe in the Blue Streaks. That was their toughest game on the schedule so far.
Jefferson
Chris: Sixty-one is a big number to give up
Frank: Da Bears came out healthy, so that’s a positive.
Milan
Chris: I can’t figure out Milan either
Frank: It looks like a tough year in Milan, but CJ Fairbanks looks like a star.
Monroe
Chris: Very happy the Trojans got the win
Frank: Keoni Snavely might be a name we should keep an eye on.
Riverview
Chris: The appetizers are finished, and the main course is coming up over the next few weeks.
Frank: Pirates serve up a 60-burger (or is it a 60-pizza roll?)
SMCC
Chris: I heard Gary and Jeff Grodi brought Walleye from Franks for everyone
Frank: The Falcons are a wagon offensively.
Summerfield
Chris: I need to get out and see Summerfield
Frank: Dawgs bounce back with the return of Tyler Dafoe.
Whiteford
Chris: Heart of a Champion
Frank:Bobcats get back on track a long way from home.
Bonus
Frank: Multi-view on YouTube TV might be the best invention of my generation.
Chris: What is multi-view?
Frank: So far, so good for Jonathan Smith and company. Big test coming in the Red Bandana game. (Look up the story behind that, it’s a tear jerker).
Chris: Hopefully Jonathan Smith doesn’t turn into John L Smith
Frank: We are on to Tampa.
Chris: I thought the Lions were hosting Tampa?
I won’t try to be secret with my allegiances. I’m a 2004 grad of SMCC. I went to CC’s game week 1 and week 2 but I didn’t go up to Grosse Ile this past week. I read this blog daily and appreciate all the hard work that goes into it. My question for those fans out there for follow their teams game to game every year is, does it feel like majority of the huron league teams’s rosters are shrinking in terms of participation? As a Div 3 Riverview is always going to have big numbers and SMCC and Airport always seem to have good numbers but what is happening at the other schools? Is soccer pulling more kids away? I know Jefferson is in rebuilding mode but I heard Milan had to cancel their JV football season today which is such a game. Thank you to all of the coaches out there in the Huron league for giving up time with your families to coach these boys
Numbers are down at schools like GI, Jefferson and Milan. Bodner and Hoskins have won where they are at, but you need the horses and the bodies for depth.
It could change at Riverview. I heard someone say that just 40 percent of the enrollment are Riverview residents, so if that changes, we could end up a D6 school. As far as this year’s team. I believe about 90 percent of the starters are residents, not sure about the entire team’s make up. I’m sure some years school of choice helps, but this year, not so much. We have 46 Varsity players this year. At one time, we used to have that many with a school of 600 kids. There’s just a lot fewer kids playing sports. We’ve only got 11 seniors out of that 46, and last year’s team was even younger. I feel like the programs that aren’t doing so hot are losing guys because the guys just don’t want to put all that time in and only win 2 games. Things sure have changed. Without school of choice, we’d probably have just one team. Having a good junior football system sure helps. RJFA seems to be a good draw at steering both residents and non residents into the high school program.
SMCC fans need to knock it off with the Ford Field talk. It’s only week 4 and aside from Clinton, you haven’t really beaten anyone good yet. Stop posting all this garbage that your team might read and start believing and just encourage them to take things 1 game at a time. SMCC has a good squad this year no doubt but Airport will be a challenge, Milan is well coached, Riverview is the best until someone knocks them off, Flat Rock is legitimate, and you also have to play one of the best teams in D4 in Detroit Country Day. Stop talking about Ford Field and get behind this team winning 1 game at a time!
Fans will be fans and haters will be haters. Both are fine and a have a forum here… to an extent. It’s the coaches job to keep his/her team aligned.
Both Whiteford and SMCC always get talk about Ford Field, way too early. It’s part of the landscape. Embrace it.
And always keep in mind, some of those posts, are done by the haters, not fans.
And please believe me, they have less than zero affect.
Excellent point Gary. Thank you, Chris, and Frank for all of your support. Congratulations to your family on your announcement as well!
Go Falcons, Beat Airport!
No surprise, the Huron league will go through Riverview… BUT… if you’ve been out to watch CC play, those boys love to hit. Fast, physical, and deep. They are going to be fun to watch as the year progresses.
We look forward to a good game. We’ve got similar teams. Hat’s off to the SMCC linemen who withstood the Huron WWE style play. Great discipline imo.
Smcc looks like the team to win it all this year. The depth they have is unmatched in the last 2 weeks 5 players scored against Huron, and 5 different players scored against Grosse Ile. Ian foster showed his athleticism last Friday while rolling out of the pocket twice and bunching 2 in. Harris, Hines, and Linzell might be the best back Trio I’ve seen in a long time. CC to ford field mark my words.
Or they lose to Hudson in the first round.
This is what I respect about Gary. Anything can happen in football. And from what I saw with Hudson holding Ida to 8 points is pretty darn impressive. We were watching Ida vs Hudson on NFHS and Hudson looked huge up front!
Do you guys think there’s a chance Ida can make a deep playoff run, atleast until Lumen?
Yes!
