Book Review

I wouldn’t normally do this but I have to recommend a book on high school football that I recently read. I am not much of a reader and I could not put this book down. This book is written by Rick Gosselin of the Dallas Morning News. He is a native Detroiter and Michigan State alumnus. The name of the book is Goodfellows: The Champions of St. Ambrose.

This book is an insight into one of the greatest football programs in Michigan High School football history. St. Ambrose on the Detroit/Grosse Pointe border became the most feared football program in Detroit behind the coaching of future Super Bowl Champions. St. Ambrose with an enrollment of 400 took on the big boys of the famed Detroit Catholic and Public School Leagues back when 40,000 people would attend the annual GoodFellows Bowl game at Briggs stadium in Detroit. (Yes, I said 40,000 people)

While reading this book I laughed, I cried, I admired and I shook my head at what it took to build this great program. This book provides great insight for any athletic program hoping to achieve greatness. It also takes a look at the backdoor deals that brought great players to St. Ambrose and how it was justified.

I guarantee you will love this book whether you love football, grew up in the City of Detroit or have wondered how the Catholics built their great athletic programs. It is a must read for anyone who has coached the game of football or aspires to be one.

  1. You can bet yourself that McNasty's of Huron will be loaded with parents lol And the McDonalds on Telegraph will be loaded with Huron people too ha. Good luck boys! 😉

  2. There will be plenty of parking at Ember's Friday you can count on that. After a season like the rams are haveing they may go under. But may open back up as a library. GO CHIEFS

  3. A couple of things:

If I put a picture up I might scare people away. We just went over 30,000 visits in just over a month.

Andy if word gets out that your going to be at my house throngs of people might show.

I converted to Miller products after my buddy Jay was let go by Chrysler and had to uproot his family to Georgia where he now works for Miller Brewing company.

  4. I think we're on to something here….put a face to a name and then the blog will really start getting interesting.

My cooler is stocked with anything BUT Miller Lite!!! yuk, yuk.

Ya had to know the zings would fly on beer brands!

Thanks for the book suggestion…it's high the must read list.

  5. I do have recipes. That is probably why my waistline is ever expanding. I will try and pass some tailgate ideas out there eventually.

Another thing about this book. It really shows you what a great city Detroit once was. With 2.5 million people, 50 Catholic High Schools and the sports teams from Pro to CYO you can really see why Detroit is so adored by the millions of former Detroiters who live around the metro area and the nation.
