On a cold and windy night in Monroe, two Huron league heavyweights battled toe to toe in the first half. (Actually one heavyweight and one welterweight but does the size of the school really matter?) The two teams combined for over 500 yards in offense in the first half as the teams traded haymakers. The 2nd half pace would slow down a bit but SMCC landed enough punches to take a 40-22 TKO.
SMCC opened the scoring quickly by going 73 yards on 4 plays on the opening drive. Airport responded with a drive of their own by going 80 yards on 10 plays to knot the score at 7 a piece.
The Falcons would respond :38 seconds later by covering 56 yards in 2 plays which made the score 13-7 as the extra point was wide left. Once again Airport would respond by going 71 yards in 8 plays and took the lead when the extra point was good 14-13.
SMCC would open the 2nd quarter by striking quickly again. The Falcons covered 73 yards in 4 plays and led 19-14 as the 2-point conversion failed. Airport would respond once again this time with :43 seconds left in the 1st half as the Jets went 64 yards on 9 plays. The 2-point conversion was good and Airport led again 22-19.
The Jets looked like they would go into the half with the lead but Mike Howey returned the ensuing kickoff 60 yards to the Airport 15 yard line. SMCC would punch the ball in with :06 seconds left to take a 26-22 half time lead.
The 3rd quarter started with Airport taking the opening kick of the half and driving 54 yards down to the Falcon 9 yard line. SMCC’s defense would stiffen and Airport turned the ball over on downs.
After the two teams traded punts SMCC would go on a 10 play 55 yard scoring drive that would take 6 minutes off of the clock. After SMCC’s Chris LaBeau plunged in off of the right side the Falcons found themselves leading 33-22 with 6:57 to go in the game.
Airport would be unable to mount a drive and SMCC would take over on the Airport 47 yard line with 4:49 to go in the game. The Falcons would take 8 plays to cover those 47 yards this time scoring with 42 seconds left in the contest making the score SMCC 40 Airport 22.
The victors rushed for 397 yards on 46 carries.Chris LaBeau led the way for SMCC with 146 yards on 19 carries and 3 touchdowns. League MVP candidate T.J. Lovell rushed for 129 yards and 2 touchdowns on just 7 carries. The Falcons did not attempt a pass.
The SMCC defense held Airport to 110 yards in the 2nd half after the Jets had gained 260 yards in the 1st half.
Airport rushed for 305 yards on 47 carries led by Jodeci Mays who carried the ball 26 times for 156 yards and 2 touchdowns. Tyler Pluff added 92 yards on 10 carries. The Falcons held Airport’s quarterback Daniel Jones to 65 yards on 8 of 18 passing.
Well Im here to tell you, recruiting has nothing to do with it when it comes to my son…he was not recruited (Collins ) out of New Boston. My son has been in catholic school since 1st grade. Not that its anyones business, but before his mother passed away over 7 years ago,it was her wishes for her children to finish their education that way.Now our choices where Richard or CC (his mother graduated Richard). My son wresteled for CC AAU program when he was 7/8 and I liked the school and made the choice for him.Now anyone who wants to help pick up the $12,000 tab that it takes my to send my two children there…PLEASE CHIME IN.Thought so…I'm so sick of hearing Recruiting..recruiting…I sacrafice alot to make my wifes wishes come true as well as alot of other parents at CC..so stop making excuses about CC has the cream of the crop…My son has worked harder and has learned more, and will be ready for his next step of education ,then he would have at Huron. He is getting a top notch education and just so happens to be in (in my eyes.. the best program around) .He was handed NOTHING…he works hard and plays hard as well, just as if he had belonged to another school. Hug your kids and your spouse and be glad that you get to watch them play the sport they love. GO CC and God Bless all you young men who make my Fridays the best ever. Nate ,,my son God Bless you..I love you..keep up the hardwork, good luck the rest of the season..and remember MOMS watchin.
and sorry i know it sounds like im arguing with you but its more like im arguing along with you haha sorry
oh instead of reading online stats why dont you go to a game instead? if youve seen airport they have 31 kids…that roster was sent before the season started since then players were either injured and left or just flat out quit…and yes that is only 5 more than poor little flat rock for being such a bigger school we should have at least double them right? thats why the airport fans/players get so angry when you say "oh class A id hope youd do good in a small class B league" so im going to say congrats airport keep working hard with what you got and dont let anyone else bring you down.good luck
Nope. We are a team.
Can you PUHLEEZE let this school size stuff go ? Go on to the Monroe Evening News website, click on high school football, then click on the team rosters and count. Airport has 39 players. SMCC has .. are you ready? 42 players. It doesn't matter how many kids are in the school if they aren't on the team. If anyone should be whining about "small size" it's Flat Rock. They have 26 players on their roster. SHEESH give it a rest! If you want to say SMCC has a good program because they have dedicated players and an excellent coaching staff, say that because at least that's true. Don't be saying untrue things like it's a small Class C school. Yes it is a Class C school in enrollment with a 42 player roster. That's 2 guys short of 2 players at every position. Come on,now!
soo what about milan? no "I" huh?
Stop… The only team in the Huron League that uses "I" is Airport. Cant wait to see them and beat them in the playoffs.
WOW make exuses you lost, let it go!! SMCC is a better team than your beloved airport. You all just were wrong on your prediction of the game saying how smcc would lose by 30. Not one s-t-u-d-e-n-t from smcc was recruited, stop being jelous…it is pathetic
I can't believe you guys are wasting time arguing about where these kids come for. Their is no point to this!!
For Airport supporters. We weren't worried about where these kids came from four weeks out! We just wanted to win. "Stupid". Please quit belittling our team with theses out landish excuses. Our team lost huge and it had nothing to do with this nonesense. and if it did so the heck what! Airport is a great time and we don't need to make excuses. SMCC players did what they had to do on the field too win the game and they did it with style. It's all about the fight in the dog not the size. I'm sure if Airport won we wouldn't even be reading all of this B/S. I got on here to see if anything might be helpful to tell my nephew who plays for Airport. This is B/S. SMCC is a great team and they played their butts off. Give it up where it's due guys! I can only hope Airport players aren't reading this crap.
in response to the post 10-3 at 10:01pm.
yes, here is the entire quote in the Monroe Evening News,
“These guys thought they had 9-0 in the bag,’’ Redmond said. “We’ll see how they handle this.’’ How come he uses words like “They” “These” “Them”??? I thought football was a team sport? I thought a good coach used “We” “Us” “Together”? Coaching lost this game Friday night, not talent, not effort, not heart, not pulling kids from wahtever area, not anything but COACHING, facts are facts…
Nice game SMCC, you deserve your win.
yah not everyone that goes there gets scholarships…you have to realize that they only have so many scholarships to give out. i attended smcc all 4 years of high school and my family and i applied for scholarships that smcc offered. one year we would get a scholarship and the next year we wouldn't. it just depends.
We will never agree on this so i will end with this… I played at CC. On varsity we went 15-5. I know for a fact that not one player on that team was recruited or coaxed or anything of that nature. we won because we worked our a$$es off and played for a hall of fame coach. Good luck the rest of the way, Airport hopefully will make a run in D3. and remember "losers make excuses"
New study has found that Catholics are better athletes. I guess we can end the arguement here.
No student I know of gets financial support; I have had children in Catholic schools in Monroe Co. 8+ years with NO scholarships (and all of them compete in athletics in every season); Anyone that's interested in attending SMCC-Come on down. I'm sure that your money spends as good as mine; As far as the scholarships-let me know where to sign up (I can get rid of an extra job).
there are 3 catholic grade schools in monroe, 1 private school in monroe (meadow montessori), 1 catholic grade school in erie, 1 in rockwood, 1 in newport, 1 in carelton, 1 in new boston…that's 8 catholic/private schools in the region..if u go to a catholic grade school why wouldn't you go to a catholic high school? most of them do go to smcc, but not all..i know of someone who went to st. mikes and went to monroe high for high school…i know someone who went to st. charles in newport for grade school and decided to go to jefferson…i also know of someone who went to st. stephens in new boston and choose huron for high school…ohh and if smcc was sooo crazy about sports…why don't they have their own football field, their own swimming pool, their own baseball/softball field, their own tennis courts…smcc is all about academics if you ask me…and you take a placement test to see what classes are best, but you do not need a certain score to get accepted…
Anyone else see the ridiculous comment by Coach Redmond?
"The kids thought they were going to be 9-0."
How about you coach them down a little then?
How about you try to run some offense that catches someone off guard for a change?
How about you take a look in the mirror rather then blaming a bunch of 16-18 year olds?
How about you find someone to teach your players how to cover kicks?
Seriously? How can you deflect the blame to the kids? That is a disgrace.
bloddynutter is a disgrace to football fans everywhere. Constantly posting and posting and posting without ever waiting for a response.
Regardless of where those kids went to middle school or grade school, they are from all over SE Michigan.
Whether or not they are Catholic, which does not seem to matter, they are FROM WITHIN OTHER DISTRICT BOUNDARIES!
If SMCC did not exist, those student would go to Airport, Huron, Flat Rock, Grosse Ile, Monroe, Carlson, Bedford, Ida, Dundee, Mason, Jefferson, and others.
Central is a P-R-I-V-A-T-E school, hence they can refuse to accept the Public school nuisance students.
They live for the sports at CC and those students that do not play sports are more passionate about the teams in their school.
There are hundreds of kids at Monroe and Bedford and Airport and Milan that probably root against their own teams because they hate the Jocks.
SMCC has a competitive advantage. Can't tell me that they dont.
Airport was bad last night. Central look amazing on offense and did enough on defense to win.
Airport should win if the only factor was enrollment.
SMCC should win because they have a culture of sports excellence. And a student body that embraces athletics.
Why do people try to so hard to deminish a 16-17 YO young man's accomplishment(s). You got beat Airport… get over it and move on. You have a state championship to go after!!
All but 3 kids went to private/catholic grade schools in the area…. NEXT EXCUSE PLEASE!!
losers make excuses
anyone who goes to smcc can get finanical aid/scholorships..not just athletes…there are kids who get them that do not play sports..like people have stated before…90% or more of their roster consists of kids from catholic CYO grade schools
u r right collins is from new boston…a catholic grade school in new boston…how is smcc a recruiting hot made when 90% or more of the kids on the team went to a catholic grade school?
School of choic equals trash kids going to public schools that will ALLOW THEM TO GO THERE..HENCE the PUBLIC schools gets money from the STATE…PRIVATE SCHOOLS DO NOT GET MONEY FROM THE STATE…..HENCE they can Pick AND choose who they want to come to their school..don't tell me bicy, robinson, were academic all americans from wayne when the transferred to SMCC….SMCC provides money for students/Financial AID..or for good grades..which means they get the kids who are great athletes who are poor or the rich kids who have good grades and their parents have fat pockets…..how can SMCC go wrong..they're good in every sport…….Give SMCC a select school district BOUNDARY with school of choice, and public school standards and show me their football record in 5 years..won't survive in the Huron League..sorry.tradition don't win championships…Talent/Horses do..last time i checked they don't run tradition left they run Bicy robinson or Lieto Left..that equals horse ….not tradition..
The last post about the feeder programs is about the best way of explaining SMCC that i have ever heard..like i said tradition, shamadition..the best kids from everywhere go to smcc….just ask Flat Rock..one of their best transferred after his junior year to SMCC..Shirtz he would have ran all over the field for FR this year, now he's a bench warmer at SMCC…look where the kids come from Collins..a Center from New Boston…not to mention the heyday when they had linzie robinson, and bicy from WAYNE lol..the two smallest teams in the league are FR, and GI…SMCC is a recruiting hot bed
to anonymous at 4:12..yah smcc's roster does have kids from more schools on it, but there are a lot of smaller schools around monroe…the catholic grade schools are small.. you have st. johns,st. mikes, and st.marys all in monroe..st. pats in carelton, st. joes in erie, st. charles in newport…Meadow Montessori which is a private school in monroe..there is also st. stephens in new boston..st.marys's in rockwood…there are 9 catholic grade schools right there..and u have monroe middle school and cantrick which is also in monroe…so there is 11…the kid from flat rock doesn't play all that much..and there is someone from maumee bay country day and this person NEVER sees the field…so there r your 13 schools…9 of the 13 are catholic schools, 2 others are public schools from monroe, and one not from around here, but again that person does not play at all and the kid from flat rock who again does not play all that much..last night was the most i've seen him play all year
13 different schools?? i can name some…st. johns in monroe, st. mikes in monroe, st. mary in monroe, st.mary's in rockwood, st. charles in newport, st. joes in erie, st. stephens in new boston…they have one person who went to went to the monroe middle school..he's hurt right now and doesn't start..someone went maumee bay country day and he DOES NOT play what so ever… meadow montessori which a small private school in monroe…someone went to cantrick and i don't know if he plays and someone who came from flat rock..yah he played last night, but he doesn't play all that much…i believe that is 12 of the 13 schools..i can't find the other ones..if a kid goes to a catholic grade school, why wouldn't they go to smcc?? and about westland..that was like 4 years ago…and smcc has no facilites whatso ever!!
90% came from the CYO grade schools
"Losers make excuses" -Lou Holtz
The next time you open a Airport,Flat Rock,GI,Riverview,Jefferson, or Huron roster sheet, tkae a look at what grade scholl or middle school they come from. They all come from a single district middle school or JR. High school. That is their feeder program, period.
I opened SMcc ROSTER AND NOTED THAT THEIR KIDS COME FROM 13 DIFFERENT MIDDLE SCHOOLS. That is their feeder program.
They have not won more Huron league championships then everyone else combined because they have better coaches or facilities, or because they drink holy water. Example, FR kids come from about 4 different subdivisions. SMCC comes from Westland to Erie.
They do not belong in a public school league. They recruir better thjan most d2 COLLEGES.
Milan BIG REDS! On a roll and they will not stop!
Yes SMCC could easily lose the next 3 games… a let down vs Milan wouldnt surprise me at all.. Divine Child will be the best team CC faces all year. Quite the schedule Spas put tobether… Crockett and DDC. I promise you no D6 has played the schedule that SMCC has played. Crockett, Airport, Milan and DDC will hopefully prepare SMCC for what they will see in the playoffs.
Good point! SMCC has a tough route to go with a hungry Milan team next week and their arch-rival Jefferson in two weeks. Airport could still get a share of the title.
Airport lost to an excellent team that is capable of going to Ford Field.
This was a great game for both teams!! If you want to be number one you better come with. Airport didn't want this game. I didn't see the same hunger in their eyes like last week. Airport was slow and flat. Great job SMCC. You showed Airport what a RANKED #1 team looks like. This is a very hurtful lesson for my boys, supporters and coaches but we don't have time to sit around and kick stones about this huge lost. We must and will move on to the next game. For the Airport players. Play every game like it's your last game. You will never be number #1 if you play like you did last night. Watch last weeks game again and you'll see a total difference in attitude on the field. Your not out of this yet!!
Go Jets!!!!
There wont be a reply to the increase in enrollement since school of choice either. I give facts and all they do is allege and make excuses.
good idea Chris… Im tired of being the lone defender against all the haters… its taxing 🙂
OK, I will stop letting the negativism through. Only positive compliments on the game and writing of this blogger:)
What you dont understand is that the kids THAT WANT TO BE AT CC are no better than anyother student in any other school. They are just catholic and their parents choose to send them there. Kids are kids all over the world.
I am arguing because the stolen player allegations "recruiting" take away from the hard work that CC puts into what they do.. those kids deserve to be applauded.
Did you watch the game last night??? Did you see the size of the jet palyers compared to CC's? They were 50 lbs bigger to a man up front. Mays, Pluff, Tyler, Baker….. those arent good athletes? CC EXECUTED better when it counted… that is how they won.
SMCC has 43 kids on their roster, 39 of them went to Catholic grade school. To me they seemed destined to go to Catholic high school.
show some class…aiport smashed you last year 21-0 and held you under 100 yards yes you won this year 40-22 but do we really have to keep arguing about stupid stuff? why cant we congratulate the players for playing a good game instead of using this website for parents and fans to go back and forth on one another? this is want brings on poor sportmanship…
So kids from the Airport school district are less athletic than from other school districts around here? Help me out … I dont get what you are saying. Where are the athletes bred in Monroe County?
You are forgetting the school of choice factor. Funny how nobody replies to that tidbit. Kids from the Jefferson or Milan districts can choose to go to Airport and play for one of the best coaches in the state and it wont cost them $8000.
Funny how since school of choice has been implemented that Airport's enrollement has increased by 200students while SMCC's has decreased. hmmmmmm?
Never said they stole anyone from any school you raTard.
Just saying that they pull kids from EVERY DISTRICT!
Name me one kid on that football team that lives in the SMCC School District…..
Oh wait NVM.
YOU CANT. THEY DONT HAVE A DISTRICT.
Public schools get the kids that they are dealt, and the SMCC's of the world get the kids that WANT TO BE THERE.
Competitive advantage goes to a school with 215 boy that are "rabid athletes" over a school with 1000 boys "forced to be there"
Dont try to explain yourself to these people Chris… obviously those of the Catholic faith who sacrifice a major % of their income to send their kids to CC all happen to be athletes. I went to CC.. the % of nerds, dorks, dweebs and geeks is GREATER than in Airport, Jefferson, Monroe or wherever. For whatever reason people just have to bash CC and make excuses. What Airport doesnt know is that they are not our rival… Jefferson is.
I am sure the 9:43 am poster was one of the people who thought Airport would win by 30. SMCC's recruiting didnt have anything to do that bold prediction but now that CC put it to you you have to blame something. Now that they get whacked he has to go back to the cry baby attitiude and blame it on other things that dont make sense rather than just taking his lumps and moving on. Sad.
tell me… who on CC's team that just beat Airport by 3 TD's has been recruited or "stolen"? Please tell me! I know there will not be a reply from the original poster because he is still drying his eye from the whooping last night. Who was stolen or recruited NAME ONE!!!!!!!
Do you have any idea how many trailer parks and stuff there is around airport… 80% percent of the kids that go to airport are gothic or skater kids… there are only the few athletes in each class… School size dont matter… what trailer park kids go to CC
Love the sour grapes!! School of choice…. I say again… SCHOOL OF CHOICE!!!!!!
Here is why the size of the school matters to the MHSAA.
Airport has nearly 1000 kids in the high school, 500 of which are boys. Most are able to play football. Airport must field a team from a pool of 500 boys.
SMCC has about 430 students, of which 215 are boys. They must pick from a pool of talent that is less than half of Airports.
Does that make sense to you?
I've had enough of this blog based solely on the Two Heavyweights… Well one welterweight comment alone.
SMCC is every bit the heaviest of heavyweights in Monroe County history.
They steal the best football players from EVERY district in the county and have gone outside the county for studs as well.
This is not a "crying" about CC recruiting post. Kids will choose to go to the best place to play their favorite sports. This is a commentary on people constantly referring to CC as a lightweight because of their enrollment.
If you are talking about weighted by enrollment, then CC is a middleweight and Airport is a light heavyweight. Bedford and Monroe are the "Heavyweights"
CC is in a far better position to succeed at every sport because they get ZERO riff-raff in the student body. Airport has 1000 kids, but how many of them are 110% disinterested in athletics?
Now think about the competitive disadvantage Flat Rock is at when competing with Central…
SMCC is the only Heavyweight in the Huron League! They should never lose the league and when they do lose, it SHOULD be a story.
Let me just say hats off to SMCC, that is a huge win for them, and now they honestly could win a state title. (I mean, last year no one thought that and they made the semis) This is a big win, they obviously worked hard and deserve every ounce of credit, beating this Airport team is no easy task.
As far as Airport, I shall say a few things. One, they probably got big heads after a 5-0 start. The same thing happened 2 years ago. That being said, I think it was more so that they also worked hard, but just got out played and a little outwilled. They didn't have revenge on their minds like SMCC, they had 9-0 on their minds. Problem is, you can't be 9-0 without being 6-0, and that's why you must focus on a game at a time. They'll be fine these next 3 games, they should bounce back and be 8-1. My question for them will be if they learned from this and can take the lesson into the playoffs, because unlike other Airport teams, this one has speed and talent. They should prove how good they really are, I just hope they can work this one off.
To justafan, don't you dare call out Redmond. Without him at Airport, they'd still be a school who has never made the playoffs, and competing with Huron and GI for bottom of the barrel. Coaching isn't always the result of a non-goal line stand, any play executed properly is the right play. This is not a matter of Giarmo vs Redmond, it is a matter of SMCC vs Airport. This time SMCC won, and they will be bragging about it the rest of the year (rightfully so, I can't stop reminding SMCC of 21-0 when I played last year)
And you know what's funny? You know how all those bottom feeders were talking about change and all that stuff? Once again, we have 3 teams in title and playoff contention; Milan, SMCC, and Airport, just like the last 3 years. Maybe next year? Probably never. Obviously big game next week will be SMCC vs Milan, weird how this happens every year. And Jefferson, they play so poorly, but still can find a miraculous way to beat SMCC and Bedford in back to back weeks (I've seen weirder, but that's the only way we are getting a 4th playoff team)
i dont know what it was, this game was huge, two things i noticed, one team was not better than the other team, one team was not more well coached or conditioned, one team wasnt faster or anything. This game wasnt decided because one team was flat out better than the other team. The thing that changed this game was Airport came out flat, just flat, and is inexcusable and unexplainable, maybe they didnt know what this game meant cuz otherwise i cant explain it. SMCC came out hungry they hit, ran hard, and played good aggressive football. Airport looked they laid down expected a win would come without playing hard and ended up losing a game that they maybe shoudlnt have. One team was ready and the other was not. Airport did not deserve to win this game with that performance, i cant believe im saying this but great job SMCC you deserved it you came to play maybe some of airports players should have done the same.
Srap it tight and winds of change here….anybody ready to step up the bowl of crow???? (If you remember, I picked this win for SMCC and you can read why….)
I thougt not…..but of course the season continues and another game next week.
I'll bet there were alot of long faces tonight!! But don't worry, lowly ol' GI is up next week…
BUT…should GI just not show up because Airhead…opps Airport is the greatest team since leather helmuts, I think NOT!
STRAP IT UP TIGHT BOYS…..GI is coming to town and they have nothing to lose….do you??
Gotta love Football and the Huron League.
Yes very hard fought game by SMCC… Airport played with intensity but the problem was that the Falcons had even more intensity… but can we quit talking about the school sizes… what i seen is about 30 kids on the airport team and 50 or more and Centrals… this is no excuse at all SMCC earned this one absolutly but can we throw the school sizes out
1209 am poster….. you were shutout in the 2nd half. It was a dominating performance by the Falcons.
Now see, all that conditioning that the CC coaches did and all that paid off. You all said it wasn't going to and they could condition all they want, but airport would never get beat. Well here's an eye opener that its ANYONES game. You all need to quit seeing it as being a one sided game. Everyone though Huron had it against FR? and look what happened. You all under estimated FR and they dominate huron. Same as tonight, you all thought Airport would dominate CC [minus mr.huron, myself, and others] but saw CC come out better and quicker then Airport and take the game! Great job Falcons! Much respect earned in my opinion. Came out strong and did well. great job boys.
As i recall it was still 26-22 with 7 minutes left, lets not act like it was a blow out the whole game.
good job falcons and good luck jets
I was not surprised at all that CC came out with a win tonight, but who would have thought they would have done it in such dominating fashion? Airport who is clearly a good team (just ask Bedford, Milan, etc.), had no answer for the run game. SMCC didn't attempt a pass all game and never needed too.
By the way, Redmond is catching more criticism than he deserves in this game. I think Airport just played a better team. Although I agree with Airport playing poorly against teams with equal talent.
The Milan/SMCC game is very interesting now as well. Milan now has an opportunity to win a share of the title with a victory. Milan's young team is improving every week and could hang tough with a very good Falcon team.
I believe this guy picked the Falcons to beat Airport. I did so in August and again yesterday.
your sarcasm meter must have been shut off.
bloody nutter you were saying smcc would lose by 100…what happend??
A 3 touchdown upset? I dont think so.. SMCC was the better team and it showed.
It was a close game, I thought it'd be neck and neck the whole entire game. Airport's D didn't do a great job until the second half of the game. It just wasn't their night. They will come back and defend this loss. They're a strong team with focused and deteremined players. It WAS an upset. Good job tonight though boys.
1st off, hats off to SMCC and a well coached, well disciplined, good skill level team. Didn’t let them big meanie heads from the north rain on your homecoming fun. Great game plan, ya’ll came out with emotion and heart and played a good game, well done! Lost a little respect when the crowd started chanting “over rated” “over rated” towards Airport, which Airport is, I agree, but so will SMCC be when it comes playoff time. SMCC would be a wicked dangerous team if they had any sort of passing game, which I think might be their downfall come playoffs, year after year.
As a fan of the Huron League and a parent with children at Airport it’s hard not to let the emotions run wild and start pointing fingers but, it’s been my opinion since Redmond and his staff (don’t want to just call out Redmond) has taken over, that when Airport goes against teams that are evenly skilled and matched in talent, they get out coached. I’ve been watching all of the Huron League since 1993 and it happens every year since Redmond took over in 1996. I’ll try and break down my reasoning for this game. 2nd quarter, Airport scores and they are ahead 22-19 (I think), there is 43 seconds on the clock. Terrible kick off, good return by SMCC (take advantage of mistakes). SMCC scores going in to half, SMCC 26 – Airport 22, a back and forth 1st half, good game, no-one’s playing defense. Let’s see who makes the good adjustments in the locker room. 3rd quarter, a defensive stand still, cool, both teams seem to have found the defensive answer, now it will come down to mistakes, penalties and coaching. Airport ball, begining of the 3rd quarter, 1st and goal at the 10, pass play = 0 yards (incomplete), run for 3 yards, run for 1 yard, run for -4 yards SMCC ball, they march down and score in the 4th quarter and then dominate the rest of the way.
Prediction, Airport will win the rest of their games (Flushing is not very good this year, Airport should win) win their 1st round of the playoffs and then get beat by a team who has the same skill level (Trenton, Adrian, Milan, someone like that) because they don’t make the adjustments, they never have, its history, its predictable, its fact.
from: justafan
Great job Falcons!! It wont mean much however if you dont come out the next 2 weeks as focused as you were tonight.
I was very surprised as to how easy SMCC was able to run the ball right at Airport. Airport had no answer for the running game and were getting blown off the ball even though they were MUCH bigger. There was little doubt who the better team was. Good luck the rest of the way Airport.
SMCC is hands down the best in the league, a great qb and running backs!! and the best all around backs with Labeau, Howey, Lovell, Lamour!! Falcon D really stepped up!!! Best return man in the region with howey I though smcc was going to lose by 30 some like all the airport fans said.. ahahahah
Good summary. It was an exciting game. SMCC's offense looked great tonight. It was quite an upset. Don't know what happened to Airport.
