Huron League Thoughts and Questions

Was there enough room at Navarre on Friday?

How early do I need to get there to get a seat against Manchester?

Was I wrong to pick my own All League Teams and Players of the Year?

Who is the team to beat next year?

Can you get the H1N1 Virus from blogging?

Defense or Offense?

If you could choose one junior to start a team, who would it be?

Who would you have coach him?

Best Huron League JV team?

Doesn’t the league champ usually get the most love and accolades?

  1. I've heard enough about #27 – after all he is just a JV player. Yes he had a good season. Has some big shoes to fill as he is no Teen- can't even compare him to Teen – they are totally different runners. You can tell he loves the game and that's what we need out there in the HL. Good luck to all teams next season – Congrats to SMCC – keep rolling on!

  2. CC uses 6 or 7 different backs three are leaving…theree good ones. But the others are real close to those leaving and they have some good ones coming up as well. But when its all said and done everyone will wish they were running behind that O-line that is returning..should be an All State line next year. You heard it here on the blog first.

  3. Some thoughts about next years teams, Smcc will be good they are only losing somewhere around 15 seniors but some of them are impact players.Airport has a lot seniors leaving, no doubt that the JV this year is going to have to fill the voids, but they still have joe and kitts. Jefferson should be good with a young team this year look for them to break out next year.Milan will be up there as well with a good offense. other teams like Riverview, Huron, flat rock and GI will be at the bottom of the league like always.

  4. To say that GI will "easily" replace a 2 time all league RB is certainly facetious at best.

Based on the JV games I saw, I would say GI does have talent coming that keeps the ground game an offensive threat. (including O line and RB's)

Agreed that GI needs to develop a D…. they were porous against most opponents this year.

  5. Number #27’s dad here…. Yes he had a good year, with very good numbers and I am very proud that he played as well as he did. He also had a good O line to block for him so he could get those numbers.

I also agree with Mr. SITOFN statement…. GI NEEDS TO PUMP THE D UP…too much talk about O skilled players. Job one is to work on our defensive line. Yep we scored a lot of points, but we also let a lot in especially the second half of the season at the JV level.

GI will make our mark in the league if the D gets to the same level as the O.

The best thing about this whole season is the number of athletes, not just “players”, which have come out even with the abundance of sports that are offered on the island. I hope that our program has finally turned the corner and will be even more competitive than we were this last year. In the past we have always found that success breeds success I believe that will be true with our team this next year…..

  6. No QB's in my family….but I am a Huge Football Fan and Dad.

#27 played RB & OLB/DE…size and speed package. He's no Teen, different running style…maybe better for HL?? I feel flames coming on that one.

NOBODY said GI has a QB better than White… rather someone that WILL compete for the job which is why I say a "coaches dream"!

GI's pipeline is flowing with skilled athletes to utilize as signal callers and backfield replacements next year…. B U T

GI NEEDS TO PUMP THE D UP…too much talk about O skilled players.
O Stats are for loosers…O Stats coupled with D excellence brings winners.

BTW, I root for GI football success here and I root for my kids at home (except 1 time when I thanked some praise from HLF). I have no use for "stage-door-dads".

    SITOFN

  7. To answer…Can someone tell me about #27 from GI is skilled or big or both?….

Well from the roster when he played us he is listed as 6'2" 180 lb. 10th grader. In seeing him I do not believe that those stats are pumped up at all. Yes he is skilled. Ran very strong, blasted through tackles and had great change of direction.

Not sure of his stats since YES it is only JV. but he did take control of the field when he had the ball.

  8. gi has a JV qb thats better then white? he must be sumthing because white threw for a thousand…that or this is the jv quarterbacks dad talkin mr. sitofn

  9. To Mr. bet and raise… I think the FR JV had some real promise for sure and beat GI, but I'll call your bump and RE-RAISE.

First, your guy was not quite the impact player that GI#27 was. He is good and will make FR better, but not like #27.

    Lets not stop there though…Lots of great O and D talent were on the GI JV team like;
    – A QB (who got hurt 1/2 way in) who will keep Mr. White on his toes next year….a coaches dream!

    – A LB who came up to Varsity due to Varsity injuries….also a bruising runner.

    – 2 other LB's with a tude and ton-o-brick hit potential

    – An all-around skill guy (QB replacement) who is S L I P P E R Y

    – O-line meat, with feet.

Two of the GI JVs' best athletes were gone 1/2 way through or the "record" would have been different….they started 4-0.

Should make for a fun 2010 in the HL for all teams.

  10. step back from the computer take a deep breath and remember what you were taught in English about spelling, lost track of how many wword spelled wrong. Also use spaces between the sentences. Not this. But this. Also check your punctuation. And also check your grammar. Also remember the 1st word in a sentence (the 1st letter) is is a Capital.

I agree with you about weak parents generate weak kids but if you present it properly people will be able understand and you can comunicate better. Check out Mr Kuykendall's Engish class at Huron it helped me several years ago.

  11. I know Jefferson is returning 11 starters and alot of them at key positions. With the help of some kids from this years JV and the return of some injured JV players the outlook is good.

  12. I must have hit hit a raw nerve based on the comment's from the 6:57 post.
Number 1 my kid does not play on the football team at Huron but is involved in other sports there. My comments about the coaches decison was who decided not to kick the extra point after the 1st touchdown they went for 2 points did not make it when they had the best kicker in the league. But did not use him. After the 2nd touchdown they had to go for the 2 point conversion to make up for the missing point from the 1st TD also did not make that so they did not pick up the 2 points. which came back to haunt them. They lsot by one point and whould have one by a point if tehy kicked the 2 extra points. Whose decicion was it to run a draw play when they needed 5 yards to pick up a 1st down, No matter if the play was working all night when you have a wide received that is almost half a foot taller than the CB throw him the ball. On the interception why throw the ball when you want to run the clock down and then kick a field goal. Does the clock not stop every time the ball hits the ground on a pass yet it keps running on a running play. Keep running the clock bring in the kicker let him try a field goal. These are the coaching decision's I was referring to not the interception you were referring to.

  13. 3:29 comment
Don't no what your talking about the coach did not make the QB throw the interseption at the end of the game. The coach did not make the WR. not catch the ball at the end of tha game.Your the reason your a Huron parent who's boy did not get the ball enough and you want to sell out the coach instead of getting in your boy to practice harder. And DK hardly yells compared to other coaches. If any thing he's to soft but he must go with the weak parents like you.DK covers every area you can cover and then some. It's weak kids backed by weak parents. start with you and your kid before you go after someone who has done so much for are kids and are football program witch we never had till he came here just a team and a coach no program.Everyone comes to practice it those who do extra that stand out. coaches can;t make your kid stand out.You as a parent need to spend more time with your son nowing what he's doing at practice not just asking why isn't he playing. And then have him and some budies turn on the coach in the middle of the season.

  14. I was wondering when the Howard rumors would be starting. If he were to coach in the Downriver area he would be bringing a lot of baggage with him.

The comment's are to let DK finish his job but how muck longer do keep giving him more rope.

Just interested after the SMCC game did he and the coaches take the blame for losing the game or did he blame the players for losing the game. Several poor decisions by the coaching staff caused them to lose.

Just like any thing kids/people get tired of the screaming and yelling and turn it off.
Maybe he needs bad coach good coach interaction where DK yells and screams a but another coach tells what he did wrong and builds him back up with a sane voice.

From what I have seen this year and read in the paper the only coach's that seems to have any sucess was Soccer coach league champs, cross country 2 state qualifiers and golf the rest just seemed to under perform.

one last thought how much time does DK spend with the middle school program and the HUron Little league program during the football season running the same plays using the same language for plays so that when the kids do come to higt school they all start on the same page such as several downriver teams do

  15. For starters returning I would have to go with SMCC having the most. They lose 13-14 seniors and only 5 are basically key players: Lovell, Howey, Labeau, Highers, and Miracle. Granted these players are very good and will definately be missed. But I would guess they have the most starters returning next year.

  16. Anonymous at November 9, 2009 6:51 PM…..

Airport, in my opinion, lost the most seniors while having the most inexperienced juniors for next year. They do not have many juniors that played regular this year, 4 or 5 maybe, Jodeci Mays being one of them so that will help but overall look for the young en’s to try and fill the senior loss void. This will be a HUGE test for Redmond next year.

  17. I'm sure there are some Huron League players being considered for the Monroe Evening News awards.

I don't know the rest of the region though. I believe both Summerfield and Bedford have kids who excelled on both sides of the ball as well as Carlson.

  18. Airport will lose a ton of senior starters and will call on many juniors (this years sophs) to fill the void. Hopefully they're dedicated enough to get in the weight room starting asap.

  19. I am extremely curious and excited about next year in the Huron League. From the sounds of it every team is going to be better then this year. I am not sure if that is possible so….

Does anyone know the teams that lost the most important Seniors that may have a down year? And the teams that have the most starters returning? Good JV sophomores? etc…

  20. It is not wise to judge next year by JV scores, a lot of teams move their top Sophomores up to fill needs in on the varsity level, you can not really judge a jv team by this. Years of coaching JV football. When my kid finally played JV, he only won two games, the next year state runner ups. Senior Year, State Playoffs. Don't put too much on JV Records.

  21. I will agree with others that the best JV RB in the league has to be #27 from GI. He scored three T.D.'s let alone the crazy amount of yardage against us. He has great ability and size and wonder why he wasn't on Varsity.

  22. SITOFN

I'll see your RB and raise you Knoch from FR. All of his runs were up the middle and he usually laid the first hit when getting tackled. Or he'd lead the sweep. When he wasn't doing this he was playing MLB. This kid is a hitter and doesn't mind doing the dirty work. You are going to hear a lot more about him. I can't really say Blosser because he spent a lot of time on varsity.

  23. Yes there was enough room at Navarre friday night.

Probably about 4 if you dont want to be watching the game from a cherry picker.

No your entitled to it after all the work you've on here plus it was nice to see someone else's opinion.

Smcc will be tough like always, I expect a few teams to come out of the nowhere.

Not that I've heard of but weirder have things happen.

    Defense wins championships.

    Bosman from Riverview hands down.

Stergalas has shown what he can do with Bosman. Theres no need to change that.

Smcc Jv was tough and so was Airports. But you never know with kids.

Yes league champs does get more love and accolades. But its not fair to some of the other players in the league who may have been better but weren't on a better team

  24. True, but I will counter that FR was also playing 2nd stringers. By that time the game was over.

1st quarter FR had a 1st and goal at the one and fumbled, stopped CC inside the 10 and then threw an INT that ended up as another score. Plus there were a couple other fumbles in the middle of the field.

Like I said…I'm not saying the boys would have come out on top, but that had the makings of a really great game. I even came on here after the game and wrote about the great discipline and workman-like manner of your JV.

    See you again next year.

  25. Lots a chatter about a GI back…sounds like Teen is replaceable. Kinda of a homer comment from me, but yes…the best back in the JV ranks in 2009 wore crimson and gray and I saw them all.

Now lets see if GI can strap up a defense!! I think the GI JV did have some bruisers on D that might might help bring a 'tude to the Varsity…could be an intersting year for GI next year.

Will all the 1-8 predictors eat crow next year too??…yuall must be gettin' full. 2010 could be a rough year for all the GI haters!!

    SITOFN

  26. to the guy who said flat rock beat themselves angainst CC (JV).. untrue. CC contrlled. they put in their freshman at the end and they scored twice on flatrock.

  27. Best JV teams were Airport and Smcc like always, Airport had some returning starters at RB Justin Jones and Dokata Clark helped alot in the back field along with Caleb Shumate, Brandon Lewis and the Freshman QB Brandon Potcova who just tossed it up to Zach baker all year. A good offensive line with two returning guards blake mullins and Marcus Copley who had also had a good offensive tackle in Kellen Sorenson, Smcc had a Great QB in mitchell liemen who is extremly fast and can throw on the run, and a good tough offensive line watch for these to teams in the years to come.

  28. All these comments about who cares about jv……in order to answer chris' question about who is the team to beat next year better know what they are getting. I think once again smcc will be a tough team but i am also going to keep my eyes on riverview.

i think it was interesting to see who you picked for all league teams and player of the year….besides you were very close with what the coaches picked..you are definitely on top of things.

Defense – without defense you lose!!!

I would pick bosman from riverview, i agree with the other comments, overall great players on both sides of the ball.

coach for bosman…..definitely stergalis he is a strong coach and if im building a teams i would want him to lead it

does the league champ usually the most love and accolades…..usually but as a "team" i think it is only fair that we give love and accolades to some of the outstanding players who didnt play for smcc

  29. Did some parents cut DK legs out from under him.
You said it perfectly some key players turned on there coach. Because of what there parents where telling them at home. Those kids no who they are.And they not only screwed over DK but they screwed over there team mates.

  30. To Anonymous @ 12:19 PM

Is calling myself jv ram dad like you calling yourself anonymous? You are obviously a junior who feels slighted. I've watched you guys since middle school and I stand by my statement. The JV coach said it at the banquet… "these sophomores showed leadership this year. Which is something we haven't had in a while". Coach P was even telling kids they need to step up as leaders next year.

I'm not saying there aren't good players on the team. There is a leadership vacuum, which can hurt a season if things start going downhill. There's a difference. I'll be more than happy for you to prove me wrong. This is YOUR team now. "The task of the leader is to get his people from where they are to where they have not been." — Henry Kissinger "Leaders aren't born they are made. And they are made just like anything else, through hard work. And that's the price we'll have to pay to achieve that goal, or any goal." – Vince Lombardi "The final test of a leader is that he leaves behind him in other men the conviction and the will to carry on." – Walter Lippman

This isn't talking crap. This is telling it like it is. If I want to talk crap I'll go to mlive.

  31. If weclowski had 157 tackles.
It's only stupid because if you read the post it said that was 5 min. out of 30 min. highlight tape.

  32. if thats all smcc loses mise well not even play the season next year and give them the league championship again. i mean that 5 out of 22 guys. and only losing 2 guys on defense and 4 on offense
and a great juinor class and a great jv team.

    falcons reign

  33. HL Football did you see Bosman play this year? Just out of curiousity because I never got a chance to see him play.

  34. Key players smcc will lose: Howey, Lovell, LaBeau, Miracle, Highers.

Smcc loses their core but they have plenty back for next year! But lets finish off the 2009 season right first!

  35. If Welclowski had 157 tackles or however many he had and was a veritile player on both sides of the ball dont you think his highlight video would be more than 5 minutes long? I mean it may be a stupid question but a fair one none the less.

  36. Thanks for answering Chirs. Makes total since. Jefferson will definately be one of the teams to watch out for next year. What do you think about SMCC's sophmores and this years juniors combining next year? If I remember right smcc will have a lot back. I believe they have about 43 on the team and only 14 seniors and there is only 1 senior on the offensive line. Am I correct?

SMCC and Airport should be there like always next year.

  37. Agree on FR, this is the first JV team that I've seen from them in awhile that had a number of solid athletes that could make them competitive in the near future. No one knows how it will really play out, but FR and GI should have reason for optimism.

  38. Here are my limited thoughts because I didn't see many JV games this year. I do have a somewhat informed opinion though.

SMCC and Airport separated themselves by virtue of their records. I heard GI had a good team but I do know FR beat them. The Rams JV finished 5-4 but moved some kids up to varsity late in the season. Huron and Jefferson had some good players but didn't have the numbers to field really competitive teams. I did not see Milan and Riverview JV teams.

One thing to remember is when JV teams are on varisty those kids have a class either in front or behind them that help solidify the team. I will give two examples: Next year Jefferson's sophomores will combine with this years juniors to field a very competitive team. Likewise in two years Huron's sophomores with combine with this years freshmen to form a competitive team. Make sense?

I will say this, as an alum of FR I was impressed with their JV squad that was dominated by freshmen. A handful of them will contribute next year on FR's varsity team.

  39. JV Ram Dad, the junior class has leaders, why don't you say who you are before talking crap about people. Own up to what you say. Who are you?

  40. Chris, what do you think about the JV teams? Who are the best in your mind? I know it's his/her opinion and thats fine, but would you put GI and Milan in front of SMCC? SMCC beat Milan 51-0 and beat GI 22-8. Again its that persons opinion and I respect and am not trying to complain. I just want to hear your thoughts about the JV teams.

  41. The kid from GI was a really good player and I'd put the Blosser kid from FR up there as well. Both ran hard and have good speed. If those two develop and have a solid team surrounding them they could make some noise in the future. I know the Blosser kid is a freshman, but does anyone know if the kid from GI is as well? Thanks

  42. A couple of things:

JV matters because those are the kids who make up future varsity teams. Most superstars play one year of JV as freshmen but then move up but don't diminish the importence of JV.

Hire Howard? Are you kidding? I know the guy is a good coach and probably a nice guy but is he a leader of men? Let Dan finish the job. He is figuring things out.

I bet Pannone has a good highlite tape if you put one together.

Give me Bosman from Riverview if I had to start a team. An excellent two way player who can block, tackle, catch and lead.

Good call on Coach P. I would love to see that guy coach a team with playoff level talent.

I feel better this morning I think I just have a head cold or something minor.

  43. You did not pick player of the year you picked MVP.You still don't get it do you.You did get it right on off.But on def. you picked a kid who's 155 pounds 5'8 and did no more then alot of other def.backs did like chickeral FR.Because of his size he will never even play d3 FB.Weclowski did what no LB has done in Huron for years. Those of you who don't beleave wait to the sports wrighters put out there picks. And if you want to no how he got so many tackles he put just 5 min. out of 3o min. of some hits on youtube. All the lame reasons people gave for him getting 157 tackles is sad.You can clearly see this kid got those tackles from playing with his HEART.Good luck to smcc hope you go all the way and make the huron league proud.

  44. Plenty of room at Navarre. 6:15 to get a seat. Don't sit right behind the SMCC student section unless you ant to stand all night!! And DON'T complain because the students are standing!!!!

Pick away – good conversation starter!!!!!

SMCC is the team to beat next year. All but three or four starts returning next year year.

    DEFENSE – DEFENSE – DEFENSE!!!

Best JV team? "Best teams" are SMCC and Airport.
SMCC was not the most talented or biggest, but they played hard, disciplined SMCC football and beat everyone in the League, except for Airport, who they tied. Airport has size and speed, they also beat up on everyone in the League except for SMCC. Should be some good football to watch the next couple of years.

Of course the League Champ is going to get all the love – rightly so.

  45. Ok, I'll take all the flak for what I'm about to say. But you all know it's true if you saw the games….

Flat Rock had an outstanding JV team this year. A 5-4 season could have easily gone 7-2, with the only true losses coming to Milan and Jefferson. CC played them well but it was FR that gave the game away with turnovers… that game should have been a lot closer than the score. The same with Airport. They only won the game with about 3 minutes left, would have been a different story if not for the start of the game for the Rams. I'm not saying the boys would have come out on top of either of those games…but you know they were on the cusp…those teams know the boys from the level pebble are on the verge of beating them. And remember…..mostly freshman team versus your sophomores, with the exception of the offensive line. Once the coaches stopped messing with the line they started to gel. Just ask Huron or GI what happens when the "O" is playing together.

Next season will still be a down one for FR. The current juniors have no leaders and are too willing to throw in the towel. But after that…the league is on notice! The small school is coming to get ya!

With that being said I'd have to say that the best JV player I saw was the RB from GI (#27 I think). The kid was a load to bring down. He got hurt, was getting run to death, could barely walk much less run…and finished the game. He showed heart and a love of the game, even in defeat. He's the kind of player I'd love to see in Green and Gold.

  46. I made the list above…. to the people agreeing or complaining about my JV rankings…. Like I stated in my list I do not know the standings or the whole leagues head to head, its JV!!! I ranked them by what I saw IN PERSON. I cant rank them on what I didnt see or read about in the paper etc…. The game I saw CC they were beatable. Milan looked solid, GI looked VERY talented but made mistakes and Airport was studly. The best player I saw was the RB from GI. But it's JV and an opinion so relax.

  47. If I could start a team today, I would build it around Pannone. Defense wins championships, and this guy can lead one. I would have Coach P coach this team, because his defenses are always playing above and beyond what is expected of them.

My HL thought is: Can anyone be a "good" coach at Huron, or are their parents always going to blame coaching? HL Blogger, Chris, didn't win a whole lot of games there, and he knows basketball as well as anyone. Although Kalbflesch won at Huron last year in hoop, his son seems to always find ways to lose in football. Should Huron make a football coaching change again?

Some football numbers: Kalbflesch has 15 wins in 6 years
It took 16 years and 7 head coaches for Huron to get 15 wins between 1988 and 2004 before him!

Has Huron reached a plateau under DK that needs a new voice to climb over?

Did some of the parents cut DK's legs out from under him this year by bad mouthing him at home, or was his decision making that bad?

  48. anonymous, for the JV standings you posted you have milan ahead of smcc. i am really curious why you did that. smcc beat milan 51-0.

  49. Anonymous you are way off on the rankings near the top. SMCC and Airport finished tied for 1st place in the league. They both went 6-0-1 in the league. When they played each other they tied 13-13. SMCC finished 7-1-1 overall. Their loss came to Dearborn the first game of the season. I'm not exactly sure how Airport finished, but I think they went 7-1-1 overall also with their loss coming to Bedford in the first game of the season.

  50. This may not be the spot for this question or you can ask it.!?.!?

Is it easier for the teams in the Huron League to accept defeat from an opponent when that opponent then goes deep in to the playoffs? For instance: does Milan or Airport feel a little better about their loss to SMCC because SMCC is doing well in the playoffs? Does Airport feel better or worse because Chelsea, a team and game they should have had, lost to Adrian??? Or on the other hand, how does Milan feel because Adrian won????

  51. Was there enough room at Navarre on Friday? “Yes… will there be enough for the next game?”

How early do I need to get there to get a seat against Manchester? “Thursday, 2:00pm”

Was I wrong to pick my own All League Teams and Players of the Year? “no, they were great picks except one defensive player from a team that rhymes with nets and I won’t mention who cause you wouldn’t print my outburst when I replied before”

Who is the team to beat next year? “SMCC continues to roll. Great coaching, good kids, weak league and easy division.”

Can you get the H1N1 Virus from blogging? “only if you use Tellia Tequila’s computer”

Defense or Offense? “Defense always wins championships, unless you’re the unstoppable San Francisco 49ers of the 80’s”

If you could choose one junior to start a team, who would it be? “Brad Bosman or Sophomore Brandon Potcova of Airport”

Who would you have coach him? “Giarmo – Robbs – Redmond in that order – or the dude from Melvindale (Howard, maybe)

Best Huron League JV team? “SMCC – Airport – Jefferson.

Doesn't the league champ usually get the most love and accolades? “Always and they should, they earned it.

  53. Who even cares about the jv teams? And ya you should get there early for the next game because clearly smcc is the only one representing the Huron league. Jv teams don't even show anything.

  54. Here are the best JV teams I saw this year. I dont know their final records so I may be off on the standings. Its from what I saw and I saw them all.

    1. Airport, they were their usual big fast self. Big linemen, fast skill players and great coaching. Enough said.

    2. GI, I saw them lose but it was because of mistakes not talent. They were loaded with skill players and had the best RB in the league.

    3. Milan was an all around good team. Talent everywhere on the field.

    4. CC was CC if you can stop the T you can beat them. If you cant you get rolled better team or not.

    5. Flat Rock was pretty good for a mostly Freshmen team. I think they surprised a lot of teams.

    6. Huron was a good Middle of the road team. I think they were mostly Freshmen so they should be good next year… if they dont lose everyone to Varsity.

    7. Jefferson was big like normal but lacked that runner they usually have. Good team but not up to Jefferson standards.

    8. Riverview, new program. They are building.

  55. Best JV player from seeing him play JV as a freshman is Shawn Brewer of Huron. Kid played fb and lb for Huron's JV team and started over many of the Sophomores last year; he did great because he had a good offensive line to block for him; Stupakis, Cavill, Travis Weclowski, and a few others to block for him. Long as he had them to block, he got the yards and was practically untouchable his freshman year. This year wasnt so good because JV had no offensive line but next year, he'll have Jon Six, Kyle Osier, Andrew Stupakis, Kenny Cavill, and Travis Weclowski blocking him. So look to watch him and Wilson do it up for the Chiefs next year.
