Huron League Thoughts and Questions

Since SMCC has made it to Ford Field like I predicted back in August and they are the only league team still playing I think we should be talking about them in my thoughts and questions section.

Thanks to all who kept me updated on the game while I sat in my comfortable chair at home.

What is the line for the SMCC/Montague game?

It sure is nice to see T.J. Lovell stepping up big after I gushed all over him in the preseason.

Will Huron League fans be at Ford Field cheering on the Falcons?

My family wants to go to the game on Friday. I wonder if they just want to have a nice dinner in dowtown Detroit afterward.

Has anyone ever been to Montague?

I said to my buddy Tom at halftime that SMCC would make adjustments.

Because of their youth is Constantine the favorite in Division 6 next year?

I wonder how big the Montague/Whitehall rivalry is?

Is there tailgating scheduled for Friday’s game?

How good is Constantine’s freshman RB Payton White? (Rumor has it he was dinged up a bit for this game)

Is Montague beatable?

If you have short video or pictures from yesterday’s game send it over through my email and I’ll put it up. huronleaguefootball@gmail.com

We are quickly approaching 100,000 visitors since the blog was launched in mid-August.

  1. What's wrong Montauge CC have you scared so you have to come on this blog and bad mouth the team and make things up just to make you feel better? What ever happened to good sportsmenship? You guys need to stop running your mouth off and prove it on the field Friday.

  2. No offense but I see cody kater torching the cc secondary. Those turds cant cover montagues guys. Edmond chinevare doesnt ever want to hit anybody!

  3. I honestly think this game is going to be closer then people think..i know everyone is suggesting Montague Blowout, but I don't think so…One thing SMCC will win is the Special Teams battle..if they win the kicking game, and create good field position for themselves then they should be able to move the ball and chew up clock..They spend a lot of time going over special teams..I know Montague has a great kicker/punter, but I give the overall special teams edge to..SMCC……THANK GOD you have a new D coordinator this year..i'd hate to go watch a Jim Clawson D sit in a zone and get picked apart….Hoffman the new D coordinator is doing a nice job..he'll bring some pressure and different looks to the game…they'll have to take chances and force Montague to play behind the chains early and often…SMCC has good tackling DB's but they have not, and DO NOT cover the pass well AT ALL!!..their corners aren't that athletic, and they're small..Pannone is a ball hawking safety, but gets burned in the passing game..this should be SMCC's biggest concern..SMCC's offense will move the ball..they've blocked bigger, tougher Defensive fronts all year…i even feel SMCC has played a better/tougher schedule…D6 was pretty weak this year in the playoffs…SMCC plays all A/B schools in the regular season..Montague plays a B/C schedule…i think the huron league is physically tougher then the Western Michigan Conference..no doubt Montague has more talent, but SMCC is probably the most disciplined team in D6..if they move the ball score points, and win the kicking game they should have a good shot to win….

  4. Anonymous at 6:08, I read that on mlive as well. Do they have a different set of refs for each game? Do they ref two games and are done? How does that work?

  5. I just read on mlive the same refs that ref'd the clarkston/stevenson game will be reffing for inkster/lowell on friday? smcc's game is right after that one, does that mean we will also have these ridiculous refs??

  6. Bottom line is…
    SMCC is in the finals.

They, as a team, have gotten good playoff experience, and, in addition, were able to practice in pad another whole month.

That alone goes a long way. Just like college teams going to bowl games, the extra practice time will only make them better come next year.

SMCC is a small team size wise compared to all the teams they faced in the playoffs. They are well coached and EXECUTE, and have shown they can handle adversity and pressure.
Constantine thought they had it in the bag – – -until the second half.

Great job SMCC and good luck Friday.

  7. Montague will know how to stop the FH-T. SMCC must pull out all the tricks to win this one. I am pretty sure Coach Giarmo knows this. Good luck Falcons!

  8. To Anonymous November 23, 2009 5:16 PM, it's true the Falcons will miss Lovell, but I believe the defense will be as good if not better next year. With how hard this team works, along with the tradition of excellence, they will be ready.

  9. to whoever posted at November 23, 2009 12:39 AM

i repect that lol as a younger person those rivalries take a long time to die down and you hate the other schools more then anything

  10. rusto, hatred is not good. not good mentally, physically or spiritually for you. you will learn later. as for me, a grad of the old CC, i wish alot of monroe county teams would make the playoffs, and win games. super happy for Erie, and da Bears when they one. (to young to be happy for the rams, just like you rusto). bummed airport or bedford didnt do more damage in VB. im hope people that go friday will cheer, if your anti CC, do not go, or sit on other side and tell them were gonna run.

  11. "SMCC is certainly a young team but they have seniors in the key positions. Constantine played 17 underclassman on saturday and return many of those key positions."

When you run the T like SMCC and Consty, the key positions are the O-line. SMCC has 6 of the 7 coming back. Lovell will be hard to replace at LB but Yinger is ready to step in at FB and will do just fine. MLB is the only position I see SMCC feeling the loss at next year. Cusamano or Leyman will be fantastic at QB just as Howey is.

  12. Ball control will not win this game… big plays will. You MUST score 5-6 TD's to have a shot at beating Montague. SMCC will have to find a way to break off some long plays or get some things done in the special teams categories. 3-4 yards and a cloud of dust is nice but too hard to sustain that sort of play against a very very good team.

  13. If someone post a comment with a "user name" are they all of the sudden not anonymous? LOL

MSMCC is a small, fast, team that runs the ball almost exclusively. I dont know that Montague has faced a team quite like the Falcons this year. Montague has played a lot of spread type teams throughout the season and maybe this change of pace will create issues for them?

Montague is familiar with the Wing T Offense, as they used to run it. I would hop ethat means they know how, and why, it works.

If Montague's Defense doesnt score three times in the 2nd Q, what might the score of the Ithaca game ended up being? It was 0 -0 at the end of one.

Bring your pass D MSMCC! You will need it!

  14. A few thoughts on things:

I don't think there is anything wrong with a healthy dislike of your rivals but we should probably support the teams in the league when they make it this far.

Somebody wrote earlier when you get older you won't be so hateful. That is spot on. I think older and more experienced people figure out that much of our dislike and hatred is because of trivial things.

SMCC is certainly a young team but they have seniors in the key positions. Constantine played 17 underclassman on saturday and return many of those key positions.

I've considered stopping the anonymous postings but I don't think we will get much participation. I review everything and for the most part I stop anything that is too over the top.

I appreciate people's support for me and the blog. Criticism won't stop me from continuing. Some of the stuff is quite interesting. I think it just shows tha people are passionate for the things that are closest to themselves.

  15. "Because of their youth is Constantine the favorite in Division 6 next year?"

The team that just beat Constantine starts 15 juniors and a sophomore. Could be a rematch in '10 that is for sure.

  16. SMCC is going to have their hands full this week. Only hope is ball control offense, eat up the clock, and keeping Montagues Offense off the field.

Can MSMCC defend the spread? How many times have they seen it this year?

If Montague can simply put 10 in the box and shut down the run, SMCC is in for a long day.

    Hoping for a competitive game.

  17. From what I have read and heard, (have not seen them play). Montague is the team to beat in Div. 6.
SMCC will run their offense, because that is what got them there. However, I fear, like the last time they went to Ford Field, if they do not include some passing in their game plan, they will lose again. Most teams need more that 6 plays when they get to Ford Field. I hope Jack is not arrogant enough to think he does not have to throw the ball a little.
All that said, I am a Huron League fan and will be there cheering for SMCC. Good Luck Falcons!

  18. I pretty much hate Airport and Jefferson when competing but other than that, I admire them and have a lot of friends that have attended those schools and are pretty cool and also successful.

  19. Chris, Great job with the blog but please stop letting people post anonymous. Some people will get on here and say anything while hiding behind the monitor. I do find it funny that the person says your a huge cc supporter.

As a Bear fan I wish CC good luck come Friday.

  20. For all the people who ARE rooting for SMCC, and will be attending the game at Ford Field this Friday, PLEASE WEAR GREEN! We want our side to be a SEA OF GREEN!

    Thank you!!

  21. SMCC gives the Huron League a good reputation, they play hard, they are a very good team this year, and they deserve to be in the Finals. That being said, I am rooting for fledged against them. It's nothing personal, it's a fact I went to Airport, I hate SMCC more than anything in the world, and if I didn't root for them to win I wouldn't be a true Jets fan. And I know and would hope that SMCC roots for Airport to lose every game. I hate SMCC out of respect though, not out of just pure hatred. I think they will play hard and I think the line has to be near even. However, I know I'm not alone when I hope for SMCC to lose, I have done it every game throughout life.

  22. True about the huron smcc game. Not to take away from huron, but that was by far smcc's worst game of the year. There was a lot a problems going on with the team that week i believe and those boys paid for it the following monday. That game is not at all a measure of smcc ability as of now. They are much, much better. Even since they beat airport. But i do believe huron was a good team, and winning that game could have really made their season for real

  23. SMCC going to ford field does make huron look a little better, they lost to cc 20-19 and should have won that game. Tyler Weclowski had 28 tackles in that game and sterling wilson played well also. I believe if huron would have won that game there whole season would have turned out different.

  24. Alright on top of the obvious absurdity of everything your saying annonymous about Chris he actually was one of the most supportive coaches I have ever had, defending me and everyone on my team every chance he had. I cant speak for Chris's other teams he coached, but with us it was a lack of talent and not lack of coaching knowledge or effort. Chris is one of the class acts I have ever met in the coaching and fan fields and for you to trash him annonymously speaks to the negative side of over-involvment by parents. By the way I wont hide behind annonymous. Robert Keys, former player of Mr. Schultz.

  25. Your a lier you post under anonymous when you want to hide. And huronleaguefootball when you don't.And you have exposed people who have wished to be anonymous.

  26. ok, enough with the going back and forth, its getting really annoying. I come to this blog to read about real comments and thoughts, not bickering about who is a jealous airport fan and who doesnt write about who. Can we just get over it and write about the thought questions posted by Chris PLEASE! I truly want to hear all opinions, good or bad. Thank you!

Anyways, onto SMCC! You are a strong team and very disciplined, when you guys put your heads together you all can do ANYTHING, i have witnessed this time after time. Montague is a great team, but just remember, SO ARE ALL OF YOU!!!! Don't let anyone underestimate the power of a strong minded team. You all have the power to do this and we know you can!!! Good Luck!!! Cant wait to watch you all SOAR!!!

    Falcon Fan!

  27. Montague is definitely the team to beat with about a 10 point spread (I would say 30-20).

I would love to see SMCC do well and compete in this game until the end giving them a shot to win however.

It would be nice for the Huron League to have a state champion for the first time in too long.

Great job with the blog Chris, it has been better than I imagined a fan could make.

  28. Good points anonymous, but easy!! You do not know for sure if they are from airport because they posted as anonymous and they didn't say they were from airport.

    Falcon parent,
    GOOD LUCK!

  29. what else are you going to talk about? smcc is in the STATE CHAMPIONSHIP. they won the huron league, and obveously they are the only team playing. I mean yes the blog will pretty mich be all smcc, what else would it be? Your doing a great job on the blog. It is TERRIBLE that some jelous fan (airport) are still bitter because smcc beat up pretty good, and they want them to lose. SMCC can definitely beat Montague.

  30. P.S. As the writer of the blog I'm pretty sure everyone knows who I am and I have no problem with people reading the comments that I write.

If people don't know who I am, my name is Chris Schultz and I am the writer and not so good editor of this Huron League Football Blog. I don't hide behind anonymity.

  31. Wow, that is pretty harsh. I'm not sure what my coaching ability has to do with anything on here but apparently you harbor some ill feelings for whatever reasons. Only you know what they are.

I have not made a negative comment about any player on this blog all season. Any thoughts have been only positive and praising of players. If you feel slighted I apologize. I'm sure your son is just fine.

The Monroe News made their picks and I commented that they were solid choices. I'm not sure what else you would like me to say. It was their picks.

As for a full page on SMCC I'm not sure where that comes from. I'm a fan of two specific teams and SMCC isn't one of them although I am happy to see a team from the Huron League do well.

By the way, I have also approved every post that has been critical of me with the exception of those that may have used foul language or those that attempted to bring a player down.

If you have anything else you would like to say I will gladly post it.

  32. Anonymous, don't sit here and degrade TJ for his hard work. He has stepped up in other games against higher divison teams. Airport, division 3 and Dearborn Divine Child who is also D3 i think. You can critize the maker of this blog all you want, but don't bring TJ or any other player into it!

  33. TJ is steping up because he,s playing div.6 teams.Your so good you should get a job at espn. You sure don't talk about your wrongs to much do you.Like how the monroe sports people who cover every game picked a different DPOY then you.And the kid is from the huron league and you did not even bring it up.Regional player of the year is the highest award a kid can get except all state. And not a word from you i bet there would have been a full page if he was from smcc. You thinking your better then you are has been your down fall as a coach and now as the author of this blog. But it's better haveing you do this instead of coaching where you can hurt a kids future.
