2024 Schedule Analysis: Riverview Pirates

By Frank Vajcner

It’s now time to head to where delicious double cheeseburgers (should) get served (at all home games). While Riverview saw their 23-game winning streak in the Huron league snapped, the Pirates still went 9-2, won a share of the conference title, and qualified for the playoffs for a seventh straight year. Does the schedule allow for the same level of consistency to continue?

2024 Schedule:

Aug 30: Detroit Renaissance

Sept 6: Airport

Sept 13: Jefferson

Sept 20: New Boston Huron

Sept 27: @ Flat Rock

Oct 4: SMCC

Oct 11: @ Milan

Oct 18: @ Grosse Ile

Oct 25: Monroe

Gut-Check Game: After four straight home games, the Pirates hit the road in Week 5 to face Flat Rock. In last season’s meeting, the Pirates prevailed over the Rams 36-34 in an instant classic. That also knocked the Rams from the top of the Huron League, and helped the Pirates stay alive in the title race. The Rams will be looking for revenge this time around.

Trap Game: The road trip to Flat Rock is sandwiched by visits from Huron and SMCC. Both teams have ambitions of being in the thick of the Huron League race. Derek Mclaughlin will need to keep his team focused. Also, don’t overlook a trip to The Island to face Grosse Ile for the Colvin Cup in Week 8.

Snoozer: None to be found here.

Non-Conference Challenge: Similar to last season, the Pirates will open with Detroit Renaissance and close with Monroe. The Phoenix were 4-5 last season against a murderous schedule that included Cass Tech, King, and eventual state champ Southfield A&T. Of course, the Pirates put up a 70-burger on them in Week 1 last season. The Trojans went 3-6 last season, and were defeated by the Pirates 27-14.

Notable: The Pirates will be at home for six games this season after being on the road for six last season.

Thoughts from Frank: Aside from Flat Rock, Riverview will get their tough games at home, where they haven’t lost a regular season game since 2019. The Week 5 trip to Flat Rock will likely be the Game of the Year in the Huron League.

  1. This will be the most talented team Coach Mac has had at Riverview. The kids have been working real hard this summer

  2. Last year was a very young team starting mostly juniors and sophomores with Senior Max Lockhart out 2/3 of the season and 3 athletes out of the line up against Airport. This year should be interesting to see how much they improve. Loaded with returning athletes they should be very good.
