Airport to play on Saturdays

Obviously by now everyone has probably heard that Airport tore down their unsafe light poles at the football field. There has been a lot of talk about whether they should replace them or just play on Saturdays.

While High School football has been traditionally played on Friday nights many schools have played on Saturday afternoons. My thought is does it really matter?

I realize that there are practice and scouting implications involved when teams play on Saturdays but are they really going to have a negative effect on any of the teams involved?

Monroe CC played on Saturday nights for years. Whenever Monroe High had a Friday night home game CC would move their game to Saturday night. For me it was always a chance to see another game.

I think the price tag is a little high for the light post they are talking about. They can probably find quality lighting for a half of the cost from companies that are looking to move product and keep their employees working.

It is tough economic times for everyone including school districts lights at the football field should be the last thing on anybody’s mind.

I say let Airport play on Saturday’s if they have to or even if they want to.

  1. Has anyone considered rental lights? Like the ones on the hightway construction areas. They have telescoping masts and various options. Let the owners set up and maintain. The Big House does it. With the 12-14k in gate revenues and concessions every home game it is very doable.

  2. Actually the field would be working just fine, it would be the lights that aren't. Nice try at taking a shot, but you sound ignorant. I wonder which school you're from, and how long your school has had working lights. Airport's have been up for a long time, it's not like this is a big deal. Win districts and you would get to play on a Sat. anyways. I hope Coach V steps up, he's an excellent coach, definetly my favorite from when i played. I think he would do good. He connects more, and has more intensity with the players than Red does anyways.

    j.w.

  3. Why should I have to go to Saterday games for Airport its not even worth the bus ride out. Cant wait to play them at home this year with a WORKING field.

  4. Huron League Champ

I think V would reconsider now that the head job is open at his alma mater….

The same school district that his kid will be playing football for, barring any major move.

He is a longtime teacher in the school, and has more reasons to stay and take over considering his kid is in the district.

Vanwashenova steps up to the plate and I predict the team will get better then they have been in the past 12 playoff seasons.

    Its time Johnny!

  5. coach v would be a good fit, we shall see. Flannery's son goes to Airport (senior) his daughter transfered to Monroe (where he works). I think he might be to wrapped up in coaching his daughter in shot/discus/hammer (she is a national USATF champ in hammer)

  6. Hopefully Coach V will decide it is the right time to take over the program.

Maybe some young stud coach wants the job….

Maybe some willy old veteran wants to take a crack at a successful program….

Maybe an Alum that has had success in some other district is interested in returning to his roots….

As far as Saturday games go, I say play Saturday!

Start a new tradition with a new coach. If you are going to win in the postseason you have to win on Saturdays anyways.

  7. I don't have any idea who the Airport brass will hire.

I'm sure they will have a ton of candidates to choose from.

I would say a guy like Darryl Mossburg would be a perfect fit except for the fact that he has been teaching at FR and he probably would remain there.

I don't know if he has any interest in the job but I thought I read he is staying on the staff at Monroe with Redmond

  8. Hey Chris or whatever the guy who runs this blogs name is. Who do you think Airport would hire? Are there good candidates out their? Would they even be interested?

  9. I'm sorry I'm a varsity player at airport and that's the dumbest thing I've heard support the team and stay at airport don't change just because reds leaving…show some pride

  10. Airport would be silly to schedule all away games..do you know how much money the school/boosters would lose not having home games? atleast $12,000-15,000..maybe a bit more..maybe a bit less..Financially they will probably make a lot more money on saturday's then friday nights..everyone in the league/region will come watch a saturday game..all the coaches will for sure..it's a good move for airport, and the program..like someone said earlier at 9:48, superintendents are business men..it'll workout…and will van washanova take of as coach?

  11. That might be the dumbest post I’ve seen in a long time. Go right ahead and transfer to Monroe; they have a team of 60 kids you have to fight for playing time. They already have 2 stud running backs a good QB. Redmond will field his best players and will not show favoritism to Airport players, he’s too much of a good person and a good coach. I wonder what the MHSAA would have to say if more than 2 kids from Airport’s football team transferred to Monroe following a coaching change. Just an FYI, you need to transfer this year, by the 2nd week of February (I think) to be able to sit out the mandatory 1 semester. Can’t play spring sports, will have to get permission from Airport to transfer without proper reason (family moving to new district and so forth), School of choice just isn’t that easy boys. Good luck to ya, change is tough, get used to it, things change in the real world. Best of luck to Redmond, he took a bottom feeder in Airport to a real good program.

  12. hey if red wants to leave i respect him but who says all us jets cant transfer to monroe now and still play for him its called school of choice

  13. Here's Huron's chance to be top 4 in the league.. With redmond gone; Airport is going to hurt badly… can't wait for the season to get way! 7 more months!

  14. Redmond met with his Airport team today during school and told them he was leaving the football program. no ights – no coach – no money – no replacement. my oh my, what is Airport going to do??

  15. You are correct that the catholic league plays games on Saturdays but it is a different animal when you play a game on Saturday then the next week on Friday. Will coaches give that Monday off? If so, then you lose a day of preperation. That would mean, for example, Jefferson would get one less day preperation when facing Milan and Milan would get the full week. Nobody plays Airport and SMCC back to back… that would be a tough challenge to prepare for T with one less day of practice.

  16. It is easy to say "raise the money or no home games." However, that is a lot of money to raise in a very short time. This is not a quick project to get done. This money would need to be raised in the next 5 months or so. In this economy, that is not happening. Plus, does the community really want to get in the habit of taking on the financial responsibilities of the school district? If the community does this, what will the district pull next? Superintendents are business men. No matter what they say, they don't care if our boys play a football game on Friday or Saturday. What will be the next thing Airport schools "can not afford" and put on the community. It is easy to cut from athletics because usually people in the community will bend over backwards to make the money appear for the schools.

Bottom line…If you are an Airport player and you want to play home games on Friday nights, transfer.

  17. Yes i agree too, for my Senior year at Airport i want to play EVERY game on Fridays. its either fix the lights and play home games on fridays…or, and i have asked several football players too that agree with me, that we play all our games away on friday nights.

  18. it is an unfair advantage….each team will get shorted one day after playing airporpt on saturday's..and playing during the day, and at night is a big difference.kids need routine..school, meal, short nap, gametime..not saturday morning cartoons/ barney/ sabrina the teenage with/ meal/ then gametime..i mean come on..hey GIFootball why don't u take some of the money from the island fund and help out Airport? I understand the Economy stinks right now, but come on Airport supporters..if you can build a baseball complex like you did with the time and committment of players and parents then u can raise enough money to have lights on your football field..Huron League Regular season football being played on saturday is UNAMERICAN

  19. I've only been around 43 short years but I believe all high school football used to be played on Saturday afternoons because of a lack of lights. Si it hasn't always been "Friday Night Lights"

Look no further than many of the Catholic League schools or even the Dearborn schools fairly recently. Many of those schools had no lights and had to play home games on Saturday afternoons.

  20. If they have to play on saturdays then they have to. Think about this though. If a team plays airport at home then they will probably practice monday through friday and then play on Saturday. That means they will get Sunday off and have to start practice up on Monday again. They will then go mon through thursday with a game friday. That gives players like one day off in 2 weeks. To me this seems like to much but if it has to be done it has to be done.

  21. I would agree if the games are all played at night…7-730. There is such a different feel for the players when playing day games.
