Nice Night for a Fire

Beautiful night in downtown Waltz. I’m sitting around enjoying the cool night with a nice little bonfire going in the yard. With laptop in hand I am writing about the Friday Night Stars from around the Huron League.

One think that jumped out at me from the first night of the season is the solid quarterbacking that three sophomores provided for their teams. Jacob Hagemann, Brandon Potcova and Mike Chickeral all had nice nights for their teams. While two of them lost games in didn’t seem that it was any fault of their own. It will be nice to see those three youngsters progess throughout the season and years to come.

I think the readers on here are being a little to critical of SMCC’s loss to Detroit Crockett. The Rockets most likely have more Division I players on their rosters than most of the Huron league schools have had in their football histories. The Falcons will be fine but they better get going quickly Jefferson and Riverview are up the next two weeks.

Many people are being critical of Huron’s win over Erie Mason citing that the Eagles aren’t very good. Who cares, a win is a win and the Chiefs can use as many as they can get.

The league went 5-3 on the opening night of the season. In my opinion, the Airport and Flat Rock losses were anticipated while the SMCC loss wasn’t a surprise either. My Alma Mater Flat Rock surprised me a bit with their close outcome. It looks as if their sophmores are growing up quickly.

Well, goodnight folks look for the weekly Friday Night Stars piece every Sunday morning only at the Examiner:

  1. RE:"Beautiful night in downtown Waltz. I'm sitting around enjoying the cool night with a nice little bonfire going in the yard. "

The only downtown in Michigan where you can build a bonfire.

  2. Little late on that response huh? Dont worry, if your team performs well it will get respect. Dont beg for it!!

  3. A while back a blogger poseted a score of the cc /fr game as being 52-14 (still have work to do). Usually not one for excuses but I HAVE to on this one. Not only were 10 of the 11 starters on the field freshman but chickeral (fresh) was out with the flu, blosser (fresh) was up on varsity, knoch (fresh) was severely hampered with an ankle injury, and 2 of our lineman 1 fresh and 1 soph sat for missing practice. With that type of firepower out against YOUR JV what would you expect. Typical CC arrogance at its finest. The day for honoring yourself will soon come to an end. Can't wait.

  4. Flat Rock and Grosse Ile will NEVER get any respect UNTIL they BEAT teams such as SMCC, Airport, Jefferson and Milan. PERIOD!

  5. im sorry, but that is absurd to say flat rock would "go undefeated every year if they were not in the HL" that is just crazy. What league would that be in? The LCAA is a weak league and Ida is a bottom team in it. (Whom they just lost to) what league would flat rock be in? They would struggle for 4 or 5 wins even in the TCC

  6. i agree, I'm a airport fan and get nervous every year when we play flat rock. they always seem to play tough, good football but wear out by the end of the game cause their team is so thin in numbers. Flat Rock has a good program and would thrive in a diff league.

  7. If Flat Rock dropped out of the huron league they would go undefeated every year there would be no contest. i mean flat rock wears there heart on there sleeve every year by goin out there and hitting FLAT ROCK hits with there pads every game u go to the game and see how they hit. Airport, CC, Milan , and Jefferson may kick there butts but they show hustle and heart by playing in the toughest pound for pound league there is, and just for that they should have respect.

  8. not trying to cause commotion, imo i said Ida wasn't good i stated that fact am i correct? and i didn't say one day they will beat some of the big four, i specifically said in the next 2 years they should be much improved and could beat some of those teams. Don't accuse me of stuff that wasn't said. And they do deserve more respect then people saying that noone cares about them, Look at the improvements in the last 3 years.

  9. yes one day flat rock will win a game against "the big 4" but also one day huron will win a state championship and one day CC will never win a game all season and one day airport will have lights. you dont get respect on future events calm down you almost won a game against a team that went 4-5 last season its nothing to cause this much commotion over.

  10. To the guy that posted the the last post ITS IDA, maybe Flatrock should drop the huron league and play agaisnt them and dundee, theyd make playoffs every year if that was the case.

  11. That's not true, i think FR does deserve more respect, since P. has been there in 07 they went 5-4 lost a killer 28-20 game to airport, if im correct? 08 they went 4-5, with a close 7-0 loss to jefferson, Yes they havn't beaten the big 4 in a while, i think within the next 2 years it's going to happen and maybe more than once. I agree this isn't their year, but they have youth, and if they could get depth. They have many sophomores who showed what they can do against Ida, i know they aren't the greatest team so we will see this Friday how the youngsters do.

  12. I went to Riverview this week to check them out week one after the hype they are receiving from folks around the Huron League and this is my synopsis:

    1. Ali Saad looked pretty good running the ball, but I was just as impressed with the other running back (#5) in the few carries he received.

    2. The offensive line was big, but didn't open up holes as well as expected against a smaller Crestwood team.

    3. The 5-2 defense was very good only giving up 6 points on a 40ish yard cutback run with 4:20 seconds left in the game.

    4. The Bucs seemed content with their "ugly" win, never trying to get fancy on offense, and simply running the same fews plays and keeping the clock moving. But like they say, a win is a win. As long as there is one more tally in the W column at the end of the game, the rest doesn't matter a whole lot.

  13. no body cares about flatrock, start talking with the pads! you dont see the good teams braging about there stats! ur NOT going to idimadate any team on here by posting thoes things! let chris handle the stats and he will let u no who came ready to play

  14. They earn RESPECT when you beat smcc airport milan and jefferson. Beat a top four you get some respect flatrock.

  15. Flat Rock kicked there butt threw the first half and the only reason why flat rock was down at half was because of a fluke play. The 2 things that suprised me the most about that game was flat rocks kicking game is much better and there passing protection. Flat out flat rock should of won and i think they deserve a little more respect then what they r getting

  16. chris. flat rock stats were wrong on the blog last night.

    blosser had 102 yards
    knoch had 21
    and chickeral had 57 rushing

  17. Maybe I should do a weekly round table with some adult fans around the league on Saturday nights. I'll provide the fire and hospitality and others can provide the food and beverage.
