Late April Football

Look for the blog to pick up a bit over the next month or two.

The voters decided that SMCC is the preseason favorite at this point to win the league championship.

I have a few thoughts in general regarding the teams and the upcoming season.

Airport: The Jets will miss Jodeci Mays talent but look for a better season from the Jets this year with numerous underclassmen returning and the coaching staff a year better.

Flat Rock: The Rams can go no where but up after their worst season in school history. FR played numerous sophomores last season and the experience and maturity should result in a better season.

Grosse Ile: The Red Devils return two major offensive threats. Look for an offensive focus that runs the ball more this year and controls the clock a bit better. GI’s best defense may be a long sustained time consuming drive. GI should be an improved team

Huron: It will be hard for the Chiefs to be any better than they were last season. They must replace some excellent football players. Don’t look for the Chiefs to drop to far back though, Dan Kalbfleisch is producing football players in New Boston that want to win.

Jefferson: Jefferson will be their typical selves but lose a lot of seniors including most of the skill guys on offense. The Bears will be a tough victory for any team in the league but will most likely not be any better than last season.

Milan: The Big Reds biggest problem won’t be a talented football team, it will be replacing Milan legend Steve Robb. Look for Milan to have a good season but to take a small step backward without Robb at the helm.

SMCC: The Falcons have loads to replace but quite frankly have the best program and coach in the league. SMCC most likely won’t repeat last season but don’t cry too much for the Falcons, they’ll be good as usual.

Riverview: Tough team to figure out. One thing is for sure is that the Bucs will play solid defense. Riverview needs to find a way to score though if they plan on improving on last season’s record.

  1. From what I remember about Hurons season last year is that the Senior class this year barely played. Huron was a SENIOR LED football team last year. I don't think that the players this year can step it up and be the leaders that last years Seniors were! This years senior class only played when Huron was up by 20+ points. Huron does lack a little bit of experience. I don't see them winning very many games this year. I'm thinking 3-6 or 4-5.

  2. Airport looses its one dimension look for a balanced attack. The games where they needed their star he didn't show anyway. Airport benefits and will be better without the All Stater. He helped Barber get his first year out of the way.

  3. Oh boy here we go Airport fans TOOTING their horns…

    sorry coudlnt resist!

All kidding aside…. this will come down to who wins the Airport/CC game to decide the league crown. Other games will be close but whoever wins that game will have the upper hand.

  4. I'm sorry monroe county but you have no knowledge of the Huron League making comments like that. You claim Airport lost the most? While they lost some good seniors in Mays, Kitts, Williams & Deweese, overall the senior class was very thin. Then you claim they have nobody coming up, what about a 9-0 JV team to go along with a boatload of returning starters? Get your facts straight.

  5. i hate to say it but airports jv team did go undefeated last year beating all huron leauge teams so before you go saying that airport has nothing comming up please look at the all around standings

  6. Because Monroe County is your real name right? Pff your just as anonymous as whoever you're telling to stop being anonymous, just thought I'd point that out champ.

    j.w.

  7. Well first of all. Why don't you go watch some football. CC lost a lot. But have a lot coming up. AIRPORT LOST THE MOST. With nothing coming up. So before you come and rip on me. Stop posting as anonymous and say something useful. I said Flat Rock would surprise some. Not they'd win the damn league.

  8. "Monroe County" doesn't know much about football with a statement like that. Who cares what his top 3 picks will be. He's only dreaming. CC and Airport will be on top. Just a matter of which order. And folks already posting CC vs. Airport scores? Another dreamer/wishful thinker.

  9. TO pick anyone other then central or airport to win the league would be admitting to all that you have no clue what you are talking about. Trust me when I say the writer of this blog will pick one of those two teams.

  10. TO pick anyone but airport or central to win the league this year would be a big stretch and wishful thinking. Those are the best two teams by at least 2 scores over anyone else.

  11. Flat Rock will suprise most this year. But not too much. They will pick up a couple good wins. But their still a year out of doing anything serious. I'm still debating on my top 3 teams to win the league. Oh and Airport is not one of them.

  12. Chris. Top Ten Returners? Top 10 underclassmen? League outlook? Best Qb's Rb's Defense? Lets get this thing going again.

  13. gbebc. quick comment. i guarantee you smcc is going to run the ball right at you. so if you consider a running back coming right at you trickery, then yes smcc has a bag a tricks a mile deep.

  14. If you say cc won't be good and you think the season will be full of surprises… won't then cc being good be a surprise?

  15. The CC horn tooting comment is right on the money. Proof is in the posts. Count em! CC was good last year, but what about this year? A team that lost the O-line, QB and fast running backs will have to rebuild. So how can one say that they will be on top this season? Yes, they have a coach with a playbook of trickery, but that won't be enough to put them on top this year. This season will be full of suprizes! The unknowns will come alive this year.

  16. Jefferson fans have nothing to say after all the junk they talked last year. CC and Airport will own you again.

  17. "Here we go again! CC tooting horns already. "Huron League Football" blog aka SMCC wishful thinking blog. Keep your tradition alive….we love it! No other team is on here claiming to take the league title already in MAY! Just SMCC, as always. BTW…..I love how these clowns post their "This is how the league will look"…….Give it up, because YOU don't have any idea. It's only your fantasy."

    what an idiot

  18. i recall last year jefferson talking a bunchhhh on this blog before they played cc. so i dont know how you can say they werent ready, they just thought they were better then they actually were. so jefferson start talking again. cause that got you real far last year. 31-0

  19. ok as far as any teams being "scared" of smcc,im not seeing any of that nonsense in bear country. We werent ready for cc last year but this year were bringing it.Im not seing a whole lotta talent from there underclassman either so im not sure whos saying there gonna be huron league champs next year.Jeffersons turning things around next year.Tell jacky G im coming for him and his 160 pound backs.

  20. Here we go again! CC tooting horns already.

They should be tooting their horns. Not other team in the Huron League is as disciplined as SMCC and as well coached. Until your program gets to this level SMCC will keep on being on top. All of our programs should strive to get to this level.

"This is how the league will look"…….Give it up, because YOU don't have any idea. It's only your fantasy.

Gut feeling SMCC will still be on top but with the chance of being beat. Airport will be a contender but just like all teams they have a loss of depth, but will see if they fill the missing links. To all the other teams it’s a toss up. So I will only go with those two predictions for now.

    GI Football

  21. It's not CC tooting their own horn, their facts and they have 2 consecutive league championships. So they are the team to beat.

  22. SMCC is still the team to beat they still have talent and will battle with Airport for the leauge. The plus factor is SMCC has the best coach in the league.SMCC 35 Airport 28..

  23. Here we go again! CC tooting horns already. It's only your fantasy.

  24. Let's not get carried away with the " this is the year to beat the falcons" stuff. As jv this next group of seniors went 6-0-1 vs the Huron league outscoring the opponents 223-90.

  25. It appears the 1027 poster has airport beating smcc and losing to Bedford. Who else would they lose to to get to 3 losses?

  26. "Flat Rock(6-3)playoffs"

You must not have seen the league or watched a frigging game last season did you? Airport, CC, Huron and Milan will be at the top. They still have the talents that helped in their victories last season and will be even bigger this year.. and Flat Rock just went a terrible 0-9 with all sophomores basically. I doubt that they are going to come back Juniors and kick off with a 6-3. G.I. has potential but no defense. Hence why they scored, but couldn't stop the score. And had some of the highest scoring games I've seen. Riverview will follow close to the pack if they show up and hit something and march down the field.. they surprised us last year, so there may be some surprises this year. and the Bars will be the bears. thats my out take on it.

    KC

  27. Offensive Player of the year candidates:

    1. Rob White – Grosse Ile
    2. Justin Jones – Airport
    3. Alex Kish – Grosse Ile
    4. Mike Blosser – Flat Rock
    5. Shawn Brewer – Huron

  28. The "talent" I speak of was very young last year 7:48 poster. The defense, which was the youngest I can remember at Airport, will be much improved. Outside of White from GI, Airport may have the best 2 qbs in the league in Potcova & McCormick. That's a good problem to have. Justin Jones & Caleb Shumake will provide a good 1-2 punch in the backfield.

  29. Airport will be good, but SMCC will be better.

SMCC had a great JV team last year and the roster of players that are moving up will fill in just perfectly. They are the best coached team in the league with that going for them they will be hard to beat, but at least they will beatable this year.

Airport still has a ton of talent that most teams in the league will have a problem with. They will miss Mays and do not have anyone that can fill his shoes this year.

After those two I will have to go with GI. They will dominate the scoring in the league this year next to SMCC with arguably two of the best if not the best offensive players in the league. If only GI can come up with a defensive scheme they would be in the #1 or 2 spot. I agree that a ground game may be the best defense that GI will have.

Milan – will have a down year with the coaching change. They also have a loss of several quality seniors that shoe will need to be filled.

Huron would be next. They had a great year last year and should be able to play off of that. Like Milan, they did lose some quality senior talent but should be in the mix if they have a good start of the season.

Riverview – was supposed to be the dream team last year and they fell flat on that. Unless some of the current juniors step it up big on the offensive side of the ball they will be a 3 or 4 team win team for the season. If Riverview had GI’s offense they would be league champs

Jefferson – I feel that they will be flat this year. They will come to play but fall short by the end of the game. I am looking for a not so great season this year.

Flat Rock – Sorry Flat Rock you are still a year out of winning the big ones. I feel that you will still have a problem finding the end zone. Your defense will be good, but not enough to win games.

  30. I just don't see all this "talent" at Airport. You went 5-5 with the best back around last year..you don't realize how much better he made that talent aroudn him..ohh btw where is mays going to school?? didn't see much on his website?

  31. 4/23/11 10:25pm……Redmond left why? You dont have a clue what your talking about. He left Airport to coach at Monroe for a few years before he retires. He started at Monroe, and will end his career there. He didn't leave because the "players" were getting smaller, or whatever else you choose to believe. You must believe your some high school football expert. Your "break down" of the league is nothing more than a self imposed wish list. You dont know whats going to happen this year. Your guessing. Play the lotto, you might have better luck.

  32. Scout.com had rob white as the 4th best qb in the state for it's 2012 skills preview, who are some of the other candidates for offenseive player of the year?

  33. Redmond left for a reason? Airport will have the most talent in the league this year, it will be up to Barber and his staff to see if they reach their potential. Mays will be missed no doubt, however their will be plenty of options in the backfield. If they get past Bedford in week 1 (BIG IF) they have a good shot at running the table.

  34. You are correct, CC has the best program in the league. Although Airport's overall talent will be too much for them to overcome this year.

  35. This is how the league will look:

    1.Smcc(7-2)playoffs
    2.Airport(6-3)playoffs
    3.Milan(6-3)playoffs
    4.Flat Rock(6-3)playoffs
    5.Grosse Ile(5-4) playoffs
    6.Riverview
    7.Huron
    8.Jefferson

  36. GI- They lose some good lineman, but Kish and White will shoulder the load..they have some good talent coming up
Flat Rock- The Rams return a ton of kids from an 0-9 team.. does that equal success?? probably not too many pee wee sized kids on the roster
Huron- Wait until this freshman class now matures..I see 3-6, 4-5 next year with a young team…chief fans i suggest you buy sunglasses because the future is sooo bright!!!
SMCC- This will be the year to get the falcons..but I don't see anyone having an easy time..they will get 6 wins and make the 3rd round before losing to ecorse
Riverview- Yes Jeff Stergalas is on the hot seat. They need to change the way they call plays..too much inconsistenty in the View..they lost 5 games and had Bosman, Beamish, and Karvanon along with a tough TB in Saad..unacceptable….The OCoor gets a tad too cute, just line up and push pepole around..after a 0-9 JV season people are starting to talk..especially the crazy pirate supporters..
Jefferson- It's time for Change..I hate to say, but come one..the bears have been underachieving since 2006.With the talent they had last year they should have won 6. Time for change Jefferson wins 4 if they're lucky next season
Airport-We will see what Adam Barber is all about…he doesn't have #5 to get him out to trouble..although he does have a few good backs returning..the jets will be big, but much slower..remember redmond left for a reason..
